We're working on updating the game with some more content and to make it more pleasing to play if anyone's interested in the concept! Yatta GIMMIKO!!!!
Haven't played the game (yet), but from the clip alone, I must say I'm already impressed by your commitment to the theme - that makes it feel like a full-fledged, standalone game and not some one-off game-jam... gimmick. Dice aren't exactly the first thing one'd associate with Japanese folklore, but they definitely have a supernatural... side to them, so hey, it actually makes perfectly good sense. And even the title is pretty smart (and easy to remember), too :P
Not a game designer, but I really like thinking about the themes for the game jams. This time I had absolutely nothing. The people making these games aren't just great at converting an idea into a game, their level of idea generation is absolutely insane.
i thought of a great concept after the jam was done: katamari damacy but you roll around as a prototype for an "nth dimensional slap-chop" so you're basically a ball of razor wire rolling around dicing vegetables
I was really excited to participate this year, and then I spent Friday in a 8 hour session of basically writers block, Saturday morning I had to step away for a bit, and then I just ended up doing other things and never did anything for the jam. I had an idea I liked for a bit where it’s D&D but you play as the dice, controlling the outcomes to keep the players engaged. It fell apart as I tried to figure out specifics though, and even if I could get it to work, I think it would have been too ambitious for a game jam in order to be fun.
I will admit that as soon as I came up with something I just went with it. It’s not unique at all IMO (I personally played 5 other games with a very similar concept). And it’s honestly not that good of an idea, it’s super unintuitive and hard to grasp which doesn’t work well for a puzzle game.

Hello. This is my first time participating in the GMTK Game Jam. I have been programming for two years, and wanted to put my knowledge to the test. While my game wasn't that good, thank you to whoever hosted the jam, the judges, and to whoever helped out! It was a great experience!
I really like the theme "roll of the dice" because it shows that strategy is not only about planning everything - it is also about doing the best with what you have and trying to look for the best outcome within what was given to you
Those were some of my favorite ones. It's always exciting when the game goes "ok, here are your options for this turn/level/section, make the best of it!"
This was the first game jam that I actually submitted something. It was a blast, and a great way to get into actually making my own game. I'm excited for the next jam!

Mark, thank you very much for giving us this occasion to have fun, practice and share ideas. (I'm the maker of "the quest of the dice", the first clip that appears in the video). This jam, combined with the other ones I've joined recently, teached me a lot about time management and game making in general: this time I tried to apply everything I learned in the past months and got an enormous ammount of positive feedback. I want to thank everyone that played my game and took time to share their opinion on it, this kind of interaction is extremely precious, especially the reviews that point out the negative aspects of the game. (btw "the quest of the dice" got 3rd overall and first in enjoyment)
I always like that Mark makes sure to show gameplay from other games in the jam that didn't make his top 20, It gives you an insight into what more people did in the jam even if he can't talk about them in detail
Where They Fall looks heavily inspired by Inscryption and I'm all for that kind of stuff. Given that Hand of Fate is where I track the concept back to and that game was also fantastic.
Such a joy to see that one of the games I helped with (DesIgn by CommittEe) got an honorable mention. Been wanting to work with Fish Mug Games for years now, and getting the opportunity was one of the greatest things. Thanks again for a great year, Mark!

I am looking forward to seeing if there were any more creative uses of the theme. In the games Mark was playing so far on his livestream there was a lot of repetition! But amazing job everyone who participated! Well done!
Thank you Mark for this incredible opportunity. My best friend and I made a game, spending the full weekend grinding out production. Unfortunately, when we submitted the game in the last couple of minutes, the entire build was corrupted and not playable. I’d like to think we would end up in the top 100 ;) In any case I encourage anyone who is remotely thinking about it to sign up for next year or any other jams that come along, regardless of what you make it’s an amazing experience and teaches you so much about game design ❤️
There ain't no way so many people can build such great games in just 2 days. That's amazing. How do you all make it in time? So many people don't even have a team, they do everything themselves, how much skill does it take to do this?
Thank you so much for hosting this game jam! It was the first game jam I was a part of and I had a great time. Also big thanks to the 12 people who downloaded my game, I didnt really expect anyone to play it so it really made me happy that some people did.
What amazes me, is that every single GMTK Game Jam produces games (in 48 hours) that are better than most triple A games these days. Most of which take years to make, have massive teams behind them, and a huge budget. It's incredible what a few passionate devs with a dream can create in such a short time. Thank you GMTK for another great game jam, these always inspire me immensely.
Making a game for this year’s game jam was the first time I’ve worked on a game-it was a chill and small team of me and three roommates. My main contributions were making visual assets as well as reminding the programmers on my team to keep it small, haha. The only experience I had working on games before was making a Ren’py adaptation of a fanfic, and closely following a guide to make a visual mod for Stardew Valley. So yeah, it was a very cool and invigorating experience, to make a working game with other people in such a short time. It’s not very user-friendly, but I look forward to working on more small games in the future. (The game is called Thunder Bolt if anyone is curious. It’s a sokoban-like game with four-sided die where you try to line up working arithmetic problems. My visuals clash a bit with how intensely difficult the puzzles are, haha.)
Congratulations to everyone involved in the jam! Finishing a game in such a short amount of time is incredible, but the courage to sign up and actually try is truly inspiring!
This is the first GMTK Game Jam video I have seen, and I have to say, I am genuinely impressed at the creativity shown in all of these games, especially in such a short amount of time.
Congrats to everyone who successfully submitted a game! This was my first submission ever, working with some friends and we're just glad to have made a completeable game in that tight of a window (especially because no one besides me had game dev experience!), as janky as some things may have been. For us it sparked a idea we want to continue working on for a full polished game and we learned A LOT about working on games in tight time constraints (also that pushing to the wrong github branch is very devastating lmao), very happy to have been part of it! I loved going through all the different projects and seeing the ideas. Was a great time.
I'm incredibly impressed by how polished some of these games are for a 48h game jam, how is this possible to have insanely good graphics and dozens of carefully crafted levels ? Indie devs are just amazing, huge congrats to everyone who submitted, you impressed me so much.
It's fascinating to see all the creative ideas that spawn from a theme and how different (and sometimes similar) they can be, while still fulfilling said theme.
The aesthetic of dice gets a little exhausting after a while; maybe themes which reference physical objects aren't the best? It feels like most of the games felt they needed to use a literal die to justify the theme, when it can be interpreted metaphorically as just the concept of randomness
@@djroscurro9859 well the thing is that since the theme was “ roll of the dice “ most of the developers were just thinking in games with dice’s so i feel like the reason of the amount of the authentic is a bit more on the theme than the developers .
@@razorback8300 Maybe it was just me projecting, but rather than thinking of a physical dice, I just thought of the concept of randomness. So… yeah it’s probably just me. Also, I suppose it’s a theme for a reason so a specific aesthetic makes sense I would think.
@@djroscurro9859 You could argue that a good theme is one that inspires creativity. If submissions are more repetitive then that probably indicates the theme could've been better
Thank for for hosting this, thank for taking the time to play the games, and thank you for showing us some of the best games. They truly are all amazing Of course thank you to anyone who contributed to the jam
wow this was amazing. this was my first ever jam and it was super awesome. i think im officially hooked on game dev. thank you for putting on such a high quality and large game jam. i can't wait for more!! i also really appreciate the random rating system to avoid certain games from rising to the top before the end of the rating period and the fact that we are required to rate a handful of random games before being able to rate any game. this was awesome. thank you for the awesome recaps as well.
Thanks Mark for hosting this jam! Super stoked to be in the top 20, but I also learnt a lot through this jam as well. Tbh I didn't expect to make it into the top 20, while I managed to get most of what I wanted into the game there was still stuff I didn't manage to add due to the time constraint (e.g. music, fix pixelated graphics, names on levels, more polish etc.). Add to that the fact that there were so many similar games this jam, and some of them were so much more polished than mine (and some added a mechanic or two), I thought that I would probably rank well but not make it into the top 100, let alone the top 20. I was glad to see that my level design and simplicity eventually won out, and was frankly surprised to see that so many people like my graphics, given that in past jams this was usually a weakness for me. Thanks again to you Mark for picking my game, I couldn't have been happier. And for putting in so much work to host this jam for us, I'm sure many of us, myself included, enjoyed the experience.
5:20 "... Would it be more fun if the towers just poped up wherever the dice landed. It would be slightly less tactical, but when you're playing with randomness it's often fun to just lean into the chaos." You've touched on this point throughout the video: Randomness vs Skill. Usually it's framed as one or the other, a skill based or luck based game. But this game jam seems to have come up with many techniques to marry skill and luck together. I'm especially impressed with the design technique of "Authoring the dice", where the player has limited control over the possible space of outcomes but not full control. Seems like it was an excellent game jam again! I'm always blown away by the creativity and exploration that happens in such a short amount of time. Thank you for setting up and hosting these every year!
Wow! Thanks for hosting this amazing game jam! We had a lot of fun working on our game Randomancer, and we are extremely happy to see it featured in the video. Our design philosophy is all about game feel and fun, and we always refer to GMTK when working on our game projects. Thank you for creating all these super helpful and well thought out videos for us game developers! Now after getting such incredible feedback and recognition from this jam, I feel confident that we are on the right track and we'll be able to create something truly amazing in the future! Maybe we'll even continue working on Randomancer after finishing our current project, Ants Took My Eyeball, which also happens to be based on our previous jam games!
Thanks Mark! This was my third GMTK jam and I was absolutely JAZZED to get 187th in the Enjoyment category. I only had 18 ratings but I guess they liked it! If anyone's interested I have a behind the scenes video on my channel. See you all next year!
The game Roll of the Die takes the cake for me. I'm really amazed at how creative and polished of a puzzle game they came up with out of such a simple premise
I was watching the stream where some games were featured. All I gotta say is. CONGRATS TO EVERYONE!! Seriously this series never disappoints. I love people thinking new games to present ideas! Really shines geniuses that exist in contrast with the corporate triple A games that suck each year. Well done!
All these look great. And this roundup spurs my love of digging through crates and falling down rabbit holes. It helps to get through the hibernation season. KUDOS!!
Well thank you GMTK and the people who entered for putting this on. It was Interesting to see all the different Ideas people came up with. I didn't join, but I did think of game concept pretty similar to the game quickly shown at 1:24, however I've never made an turn based RPG before, so I didn't even try since I knew I lacked the skills to make it 48hrs.
holy shit, most of these games look like they were made in months rather than just 48 hours. It's very, very impressive the level of talent that some designers have. Good job guys!
thanks again for hosting such an amazing jam!! they're so good for learning about game Dev and testing new ideas. my entry this year did way better than my previous, despite me being pretty unhappy with it at the end of submission :) would have never come up with the idea otherwise, I'm now considering developing it further into a full title !
with ahdhd, i find not having enough time to figure out whats going on in a puzzle exponentially more unfun that having enough time to cause paralysis. i recognize tho that i dont represent all players. and that, anxiety of that type can be a real hell for other players
I have the same too! And i think Mark already gave a good solution on a video he made about xcom 2 and mario +rabbids. Basically, don't give a time _limit,_ but give a _prize_ if you're extra fast. Maybe an extra die in this case
It’s always interesting to see these game jams because you can learn a lot about the current trends in game development. Right now, people seem to be really into Vampire Survivors.
Been watching all the devlogs over the last few days just waiting for this video!! There is so much good you do for the videogame community! I wish you every success Mark, have a good day/night and all the best to you and yours
A lot of these are really cool. Where They Fall in particular looks amazing and I LOVE the concept of seeing what you’re given and using a manual to make what you can of it. Really, really cool stuff!

My visuals clash a bit with how intensely difficult the puzzles are, haha.)
that berb hike blew me away damn thats clever
Always amazes me how quickly you get this video made.
Wow yeah much more impressive THAN MAKING A FUCKING GAME IN 48 HOURS. What a hero he is.
@@Ten_Thousand_Locusts don’t be a loser
@@Ten_Thousand_Locusts I'm sorry? am I not allowed to give compliments?
These are my favourite videos of the year.
This year's presentation is off the charts. The medium has matured so much
I'm incredibly impressed by how polished some of these games are for a 48h game jam, how is this possible to have insanely good graphics and dozens of carefully crafted levels ? Indie devs are just amazing, huge congrats to everyone who submitted, you impressed me so much.
"A great big dollop of randomness" - For some reason that made me laugh.
My favorite game of the jam: Birb Hike. Such an interesting idea!
Ngl, i submitted to this game. Damn the theme was hard, being more free with the idea of the die is a sure winner in my book.
I'm not a game designer but I look forward to Game Jam each year to see what creative ideas people come up with. This year was great!
Thank you for showing a glimpse of our game !! (3:14)
Congrats to everyone ❤️❤️❤️
It's fascinating to see all the creative ideas that spawn from a theme and how different (and sometimes similar) they can be, while still fulfilling said theme.
Over all every game has a unique idea and this was amazing.
I really appreciate the hard work that developers done a game in little time.
Thanks so much Mark for hosting the jam. Been participating for 5 years now, and I am so happy and amazed our game (Berb Hike) is among the winners!
The aesthetic of dice gets a little exhausting after a while; maybe themes which reference physical objects aren't the best? It feels like most of the games felt they needed to use a literal die to justify the theme, when it can be interpreted metaphorically as just the concept of randomness
I feel like that’s more on the developers than the theme itself. Could just be me, though.
Sure, but I'm also amazed of the creative ways the theme was interpreted and how dice could fit in so many different genres of games!
They truly are all amazing
Of course thank you to anyone who contributed to the jam
wow this was amazing. this was my first ever jam and it was super awesome. i think im officially hooked on game dev. thank you for putting on such a high quality and large game jam. i can't wait for more!! i also really appreciate the random rating system to avoid certain games from rising to the top before the end of the rating period and the fact that we are required to rate a handful of random games before being able to rate any game. this was awesome. thank you for the awesome recaps as well.
This was my first 48 hour GameJam and I loved it! I defenitely learned a lot and hope that I have time for the next one!
18:25 This is a brilliant idea. It's a roll of the dice in as many ways as possible.
Agreed, great concept (and aesthetic!)
Ty game devs, mods, and patrons, this is my favorite series on yt
It's too bad I was busy the weekend of the jam, because these are always so much fun! Congrats to everyone who submitted a game!
Thanks Mark! This was my third GMTK jam and I was absolutely JAZZED to get 187th in the Enjoyment category. I only had 18 ratings but I guess they liked it! If anyone's interested I have a behind the scenes video on my channel. See you all next year!
This theme had me up in arms 😅. I'm amazed to see how creative some people are!
KUDOS!!
Watching the best games compilation of each game jam is always my favorite video to watch of the year
This was a great experience, thanks for hosting it Mark, and congrats to everyone else who made a game!
thank you for hosting the jam! this was the first one I submitted to, and I had a blast making the game
I don't dev neither rank in these gamejams, but I always love to see them happen
Unfolding dice as part of a mechanic, These game jams are really creative!
Oh my god, the innovations from those jam games, I am impressed! Thank you everyone , thank you Mark!
That was a very fun Jam, everyone used the most cool ideas for the Theme!
I love the winers. I saw 4 or 5 games from the top 20 actually in your stream. This was a great year for the GMTK Jam! KUDOS !!!
Thanks for hosting and congrats to everyone!! I thought my game was a bit creative but this… wow great job guys
IM SO GLAD MY FRIENDS' SUBMISSION MADE IT IN HERE OMG (it's number 11 in this video). I'm SO PROUD OF THEM
The creativity with these are so amazing. And the level of polish on these were impressive too.
very well edited video, showing a bunch of extra examples of what you are talking about and then showing/reviewing your favorite of the bunch
These game jams are awesome! i love playing every single one and im genuinely impressed with how they turned out. awesome
'Fire and Dice' and 'Barb Hike' are clever ideas definitely could see them as a full puzzle game.
holy shit, most of these games look like they were made in months rather than just 48 hours.
So cool to see my friends game get a shout out in the honorable mentions. I'm happy for him
This year went by so fast I was shocked when i saw this in my recommended as it felt like the last one was just a few months ago. Great video
It was nice to be part of a group that made a game that was in a finished state. Now I have something for a portfolio
Where They Fall is such a wonderful and abstract concept, it would be amazing if the dev expanded it into a full game
with ahdhd, i find not having enough time to figure out whats going on in a puzzle exponentially more unfun that having enough time to cause paralysis. i recognize tho that i dont represent all players. and that, anxiety of that type can be a real hell for other players
That's why more options are better, but make timers the default
I have the same too! And i think Mark already gave a good solution on a video he made about xcom 2 and mario +rabbids. Basically, don't give a time _limit,_ but give a _prize_ if you're extra fast. Maybe an extra die in this case
(also yes, long live accessibility options, i just always forget they exist)
Love seeing all the creativity of our young minds at work!
Didn't finish my game (too busy and hard theme) but damn, this one had a lot of good games in it. Congrats to everyone who submitted a game!
I'm surprised not to see a shoot to move game 😀 Congrats to everyone who participated this year! these look fun!
