- In this video Jason Thomas shows off two of the largest beetle species in the northwestern united states, the California Prionus or California Root Borer (Prionus californicus) and the Ponderos Borer Beetle (Trichocnemsis spiculatus). I talk about their biology, management and the difference between these two giant long horn beetles.

This is Logan's Mom and I want to say I really appreciate you Jason for taking the time to address his letter he was so happy to write you and even more happy with you mentioning and giving the tips in the video. 🙂
You are so welcome! Sorry I am not that great at writing letters. Hopefully I made his day! :)
I was worried he would not watch it and I would have to send him a letter in the mail that said, watch this video.
It did make his day!! He happend to see you had a new video out and I asked premission to watch it so we watched it together. We both was so shocked and happy. Since he's been 5 he's wanted to be a Sciencist but a couple of years ago he's gotten serious into entomology and wants to go to the same college as you did. He has a whole collection of pinned bugs in special case. 🙂 Keep making these videos when you can because you're a great role model to a lot more young people than you know relaize. Hope you and your family have a great weekend.
mom of the year right here
i’m so glad you’re posting again!! i got into insect hunting right after your last post. please make more content, you’re the best!!
6:54 "No the hand is mine! Stop! Let me on!"
Excellent! Thrilled to see you again.
Thanks its been a while.
Ah, the king has returned.
I don’t know about that but thanks
Today we went to a lake and I found one of the second beetle in the water. Scooped it up with my net but then it took quite the effort to get it off. Eventually I managed to get it to walk onto a stick. It was quite a lot smaller than the one in the video. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be in the water or not.
Funny I found this video today after seeing that beetle. I wasn't trying to look it up, this video popped up at the end of your dragonfly video. I was trying to find out whether or not it's okay to hold dragonflies by the "tail", since I also caught a few of them at the lake.
You're back!! I've missed your videos they've taught me so much they gave me the confidence to start studying insects and to start curating my collection :)
Please keep making content man. if u can. just subbed.
Really into finding katydids and crickets these days, it’s so fun.
I’m not sure what I did in my past to get this live feed video to pop up, but I’m very glad I did that. Excellent video. Beautiful beetles. Looking forward to the next one!
In another dimension you were once sorcerer supreme and a master of the mystical arts and bugs. This is a message from that person in an alternate dimension. More likely you just subscribed to one of my other videos and didn't remember :)
man i love longhorn beetles, they are one of my favorites, especially the flower longhors and their bright colors, last year my dad got this Locust Borer from work and it is this beautiful black and yellow striping, i love them
Yes very pretty!
I love longhorn beetles, amazing video👍
Yes they are very cool!
Not a whole lot of interesting Cerambycids here in Virginia, but I've been collecting tons of scarabs.
When I lived in Arizona I'd often see Prionus heroicus while bug hunting at night out in Payson. Very imposing beetles, and I swear they hold a grudge if you mess with them. lol
Ha ha yeah I don’t think they can remember but it doesn’t stop them from being aggressive.
At one part if the video you had a fly hovering around you and it landed on yiur hand and it seems you didnt even know it was there 😂
Those giant long horn beetles look amazing.
They are pretty impressive.
Wow! That’s the biggest larvae I’ve ever seen
The Tile-horned prionus beetle and the Eastern Hercules beetle are our two big ones here in Kentucky.
Awesome yeah you have some more diversity
I like Big Bugs and I cannot lie!
What the heck this channel is cool
Thanks glad you like it!
Wow 👍👍
HES BAAAACK
Well for a while haha. Just depends on when bugs show up and how busy I get with my board game
I saw someone mention a discord. Could I join. I love the channel and would like to meet other likeminded people
Send me an email I am not keeping the link public to avoid trolls. Email me at the email shown in the video to request to join.
Hey i know your busy with ya family so you can't post as many long videos but maybe try shorts or try out animal identification apps like seak and find bugs out by you and make shorts talking about them
While pining insects should we remove flush from stomach, will it not be rot after preserve fresh, i am new to this please help me out
I think I saw a big one kind of like those in yellow stone park
Yeah they could be in that area for sure
I think the 2nd beetle in this video is what I see coming out of holes around a tree, quite long... and big (in my opinion)... freaked me out... I live in Scottsdale AZ... I dont like to kill creatures, but... Is there a natural way to get rid of them and kill and larvae?
I want a large beetle but they are very expensive and don’t live long 😢
He kinda sounds like a electric power outage like a wire problem
Yeah its a very interesting sound for sure. Almost like a scraping of some sort to me. :)
Today on Mythbusters, can a human defeat it in poker
ha ha
Hello hope you see this and replying, I got a 24 dragonflies from farmers How to handle dried dragonflies? I want to relax it for pinning
still need tips?
The panderous borer beetle is just about the size of a mango tree borer beetle
I haven’t heard of them I will have to look that up
Why did you take down your wolf spider handling video and care video?
The initial wolf spider video had some content that was inaccurate. I have raised one for about a year now and have better tips, but don't have a specimen to record while I discuss how to take care of it. If you have additional questions please join my discord by following the instructions at the end of this video.
That fly that landed on your hand was making me cringe, I hate those things, the beetles were cool though. Is their bite really painful?
Not too bad. More surprising than anything
The California prionus didn’t even draw blood when it bit me
Why not share the discord in the description or channel info?
Also that lil guy is super cool.
I want to prevent bots and spammers from joining directly into the channel. By adding an extra step it reduces the amount of folks joining, which may sound counter-intuitive, but I want to create a safe space where we can keep on topic and reduce trolling efforts.
