Freemans mind references make me feel like a geriatric looking back at the 30’s
I mean, it's still going. The first part only ended a couple years ago.
Shaddy I think it’s more that a lot of the references are from episodes made literally a decade ago; I remember watching the first few episodes of the first series on a 4PP stream back in the JTV days lol.
Freeman's mind is what got me into PC gaming (Outside of wow) back in 08 I got Half Life remake for the Playstation 2. Then when I beat it I wanted to play HL2 so I got that new Orange Box thing and well, the rest is history.

It's just the way the Source Engine is programmed, I think. It doesn't have masked loading.
@@jackpumpoen For some reason, literally any map that you create will claim that the node graph is out of date the first time because the .ain file's "last modified" date is older than the map itself. It can only be fixed by adding a command to the config file.

One thing I think the original Xen doesn't get enough credit for is looking genuinely, incomprehensibly alien, like it's not even a coherent pocket of spacetime.
I might be alone in this, but out of all the things I find the most remarkable in the Xen remake is the very alien plant life. Most authors/artists dedicate hours to alien people and alien animals; few manage to create alien flora that isn't just glowing fungus. I'd watch a podcast about what was the dev team's inspiration for that Xen biome alone.
@@stalwartarjuna Yeah I feel like the plant life in the Xen remake is absolutely stellar. As much as I dislike Black Mesa's overall aesthetic, they knocked Xen out of the park.
Visually BM's Xen Is pretty stunning but it's way padded out and boring. Interloper is the worst offender, easily the longest chapter in the game.

@@stalwartarjuna I'll confess, I think it draws a little too much from sea life and coral at times, but yeah, it's pretty incredible broadly speaking. Just a fantastic diversity in flora and geology that keeps changing throughout, and really enforces why I loved Half-Life's alien designs over so many others.
It's also cool to think that nothing in Xen was native to Xen-it's all a collage of displaced species that have competed and adapted to each other and this strange environment, the Vortigaunt-Nihilanth society included. We kinda see this idea showcased most prominently in Half-Life Alyx-as only the most extremely invasive species could have survived on Xen, we see that they really grow out of control on Earth; Headcrabs, Antlions, Leeches, and the countless growths of the Quarantine Zone.
Last time I was this early, we all had to wear these ridiculous ties.
I may hate "early" comments, but I love the Half-Life scientist clips, so rather than get angry I'll just yell _STAHP._ _NOOO._ *HRUAGH*

The Xen flora in Half Life: Alyx feels more reminiscent of this version of Xen than the original. If I had to guess I''d say Valve let themselves be inspired, at least a bit, from the original Black Mesa Xen reveal from 2018
