- From The Mike Douglas Show, aired in August of 1968. (Part 2 of 4)
In this clip you can watch Judy sing a brazilian song, written by Tom Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes, called Insensatez, in portuguese. The english lyrics were written by Norman Gimbel.
This song was made famous in Brazil by Elis Regina. It was recorded by many artists including Frank Sinatra, Sinéad O'Connor, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, Eartha Kitt, Megan Mullally and Sting.
Enjoy!
I've always loved the song and had no idea Judy ever did it. Just beautiful.
I hate the negative comments about Judy - She was the greatest entertainer we ever had - she simply was the best- she gave us her all for her 47 years that we had with her - she simply wore out- God Bless you Judy -

Watching and listening to this clip, I find that I'm nervous for her at first, as she's tentatively muttering and looking around., and I want to calm her. Then she starts to sing, and I find she's calming me!
It has been written that Judy was the "queen of rubato" - the ability to draw her breath across her vocal cords like a bow across the strings of a cello. In this video, a few months before her passing, Judy demonstrates how this skill remained. Perfectly in tune, she breathes music, caressing the notes and infusing each beat of music with meaning. Peerless, Judy's unique ability to move excite and touch our hearts is one of the wonders of our age.
That was beautiful. Took the words right out of my heart. I've loved her talent for more years than I care to mention but could never voice my opinion of her as eloquently as you did.
Judy gave every drop of blood.Who could ask for anything more.
Amen. One of the best entertainers of all time.
Better than the last ass singers of the day who depend on auto tune
This is great. UA-cam has given us back our memories of days gone by with magnificent, talented entertainers. I hope the youth are paying attention to what real talent is. Judy Garland is a multi-talented treasure.
Judy was an amazing & a real Entertainer. Who else could keep people's attention when there voice isn't at its best? Judy knew how to entertain, if her voice gave out she still rocked the house. People post comments about her being "loaded", how does anyone know if she was? They rehash old myths & attack a dead woman. Her talent was Great & yet when we hear her name, it's linked w/scandal instead of excellence. Why soil Judy Garland's reputation? All she ever wanted was to sing for all of us
Incredibly moving. Wow.
Sick and frail??? I know you're defending her but... she looks absolutely adorable and gloriously beautiful to me -- how could she not -- she's the great Judy Garland, for pip's sake.... And I'm amazed that her voice still has the power and dexterity that it has -- I can listen to this over and over and neither tire of it nor find fault with ANYTHING about it..... I've said it before -- on her worst day, she still wipes the floor with the best of them on their best days....
Amen to that!
Not only is She an amazing singer, but She has such a great "handle" on lyric interpretation. She's the "real deal" !!!
Judy wasn't just a great singer. She was a goddess, miles over human judgment. Singing this classic by Jobim and Moraes Judy has set a new standard in music. I am lucky to have been on the same planet at the same time she has been. And not only she awarded us with song masterpeices but gave us Liza.
"I know I'm gonna breathe the feathers!" haha Judy, I love you. In other words, she is in such great voice here. I love seeing her sing live like this.
This was taped less than a year before she passed away and, although her voice is not as pliable as it once was, particularly on the low notes, it still exists beautifully. Her talent and technique carry her through and she makes the song more effective than it might have been if it were sung by a fresh young voice. She 'lives' it.
Great song. I wish Judy had come to "'Cassino da Urca", here in Rio de Janeiro - Brazil.
This song was gorgeous and sensitively interpreted by Judy. I've never heard this till now. I love her dress. She looks good in red. She is so vulnerable here. It makes me want to hug her and tell her how wonderful she is. Judy, you are and will always be loved because you gave love.
Sheer emotion ❤.. 💜🌿
I didn't realize she could still sing so remarkable that late in her career.
Here we go again... This LADY WAS DIVINE! Xiii... Her expression and the movement of her hands... Miss Garland is ETERNAL... Thank you for THE WONDER that you "STILL ARE"!...
Just reminiscing with Judy tonight & found this sensational performance. It's 2022 and I still cry to think of this stupendous talent and her difficult existence. How lucky we were to have her on earth performing for us 😍
Charisma. You either got it or you don't. And, boys, did she have it.
Never knew she sang that, I'm from Brazil and I love her, I'm so glad to see her singing a Brazilian song.
This is wonderful, thanks. Few know, that it was Judy Garland who broke down that phony '4th wall' between the performer and the audience which produces that intimacy we never forget in a concert and is even now rarely achieved. Actually, it was Lady Day (Billie H.) who started the trend in the smaller clubs, but it was Judy, using her husband, Sid Luft's idea, who actually sat -- feet dangling -- on the edge of the stage at Carnegie Hall and began to chat with the folks between songs...
This song was a great departure from her music history. It seems she really wanted a change. As a fan of Jazz and Judy I would love to had seen her do more of this in what could of been her future.
my moms favorite performer,so much talent,so much heartbreak I love you judy rest in peace...
Gorgeous & exotic "How Insensitive" show Judy Garland still magnificent even when she no longer had industry support...long gone, Judy did things on her own by this point in her life still showing heart & soul with artistic brilliance...Bravo Judy, and you are loved and missed!!! Bless those who did give her support and for shame to those who should have but didn't...
Beautiful rendition of this heartbreaker song.
As always, Garland created a magic no one has
matched. At her best, no one could touch her.
She cast a spell over an audience like no other.
I was lucky enough to see her in person a few
times. Wow!
I think this is just a great performance! Played beatifully too!
Absolute perfection.
How I love her husky voice gives lyrics more accent.
What a beautiful version!! She makes me cry!!
i just can say: She lives the song.
When Judy discovered this she knew what it was. Jobim drew to greats to his music. Revolutionary...actually a little rumba beat to his music made all the difference. they called it boss nova but he learned from classic French composers and Wrote music that could tear out the heart.
EMOTIONAL DEPTH OF INTERPRETATION THAT ONLY JUDY AND BILLIE HOLIDAY POSSESSED
Ebony and ivory.
Her voice still has the ability to make a song her own. This is the best rendition of this song I've heard,
No Doubt about it -in my opinion- the Very/Best/Greatest Live Entertainer/Singer/Story-Teller of the 20th century. No words strong enough to describe what she gives/generosity makes you feel/chills-thrills-goose.bumps/laughs/tears ....
More I hear her more emotion and compassion invade me
Judy we love you 😍 my dear you were extraordinary
Ah, Judy, Judy, Judy...quanta saudade deixaste! Lá atrás no tempo, há muito tempo, quando ligava o rádio e escutava lindas músicas por você...! A eterna Dorothy do clássico "Somewhere Over The Rainbow".
Wow! 🔥💪
I stood for 2 hours at the Frank Campbell Funeral Home just to say goodbye to my favorite star when Judy passed away. When I finally got in, I looked at her. It was as if she knew we were there, and wanted to get up and sing for us. If she only could!
She had got to be my favorite singer of all time. She is just glorious, her voice is eternal.
This song, along with "What Now My Love?" were my favorite songs to see Judy do in person.
My first time seeing/hearing this and it's thrilling to hear her in such control this late in the game. The song sits perfectly on her voice, and you'd think singing with such restraint would reveal tons of vocal damage. Instead, her luscious tone is pretty much intact, and of course her interpretation floors me. Thank you so much for posting this.

Late in the game...she was tragically only about 43 here..dying just a few years later at 46...check out her duets show with Striesand in particular..Count Basie etc.
@@jacquelinepaul9731 She was 46 at this time and passed away less than a year later.
Jacqueline Paul Judy had just turned 47 when she died on 22nd June 1969.
I was at this show. It was the summer of 68. Judy was 46 at the time.
@@russellcandy9850 can you tell us more
she was just great, no other words can be added, she just was born with this beautiful talent
What a beautiful song. Judy has touched my heart :)
Judy's interpretation of this song hit me hard with tears... I'm in a relationship but I feel like I've broken up with someone...
ESPETACULAR. Entre as várias versões , está é uma das mais lindas!
I thought she looked great, sounded great--the interview is great--hard to believe this is just 10 mos. before her death. She must've gone downhill a lot in the last 6 mos or so before she left us. How sad, she was so talented, and we all wanted much more of her. She left us much too soon. We love you always Judy.
When I listen this song sing by this WONDERFUL and GREAT LADY, I remember the beautiful song written by THE ETERNAL CHARLES CHAPLIN " SMILE"... I must smile to hide a tear that was so near... MERCI BEAUCOUP, MISS GARLAND wherever you are...

Goosebumps. And genuine awe.
Que maravilha...Esta interpretação da Judy Garland
Well... that's all about Judy... in other words... it's all about this crazy thing called LOVE. Between humanity and eternity... Judy on the threashold of Heavens...
Nothing more to say... just speechless...
Greatest Vocalist on record.
Stunning performance
Beautiful Judy. Touches everybody like no other.
She died about 9 months after this. ; (
WHAT A TREAT!
. . . yes, there ARE differences but this still is intrinsically beautiful. There are still abundantly obvious traces of beauty in her voice -- which is in remarkably good shape here compared to some other talk show appearances of the time. There are, however, still some documented occasions when her voice was still quite close to its original self. In ANY event, this is wonderful and I Thank You for posting this gem. :-)
Wow!!What a big surprise!!!Judy Garland singing a brazilian song!Wonderful!Thanks
OMG, my ears have just been spoiled, TY, TY, TY to whomever uploaded this. I can't stop listening and as I repeat it over and over again it gets more and more amazing because I hear something amazing and new each time. This kind of amazing can't be caught all at once.
Chills. 9/24/24. This is a favorite tune. No idea she covered it. Chills.
Man, from the very first note, she got all up inside of that song.... effortlessly.
Judy é perfeita e deixou insensatez do jobim mais perfeita que nunca, mas tudo do jobim é lindo ;)
This Bossa standard in her voice is awesome....
What do u mean exactly please ?.
@@jacquelinepaul9731 By Bossa he means Bossa Nova, a Brazilian style of music that was mostly popular in the sixties (today most people call it "lounge"!) The song How Insensitive in itself is a Brazilian Bossa Nova standard (Insensatez in Portuguese) sang by numerous performers.

Thanks I know what bossa is...and here it's the arrangement...bossa standard in her voice.. that's what I didn't understand.
wonderfull Judy xx pure natural talent RARELY Seen these days xx IF At all x
Extremely brilliant
Thank you for this video; I wish this footage could be restored and conserved. I have never seen Judy Garland like this… peace and hugs KP
Grand Video!
So sad. This reminds us of what we have lost. But thank God we have this moment. Magnificent!
what can we say? thanks for having all we have..thank u for your talent through years making us believe in love again and again.........
Stunning. Ms. Garland and Peggy Lee could find the true meaning to Norman Gimbel's lyrics.
Brilliant, beautiful and heartfelt.
Tão perto do fim, afetada pelas drogas e pela vida pessoa, quando cantava era divino. Uma Piaf americana.
The only other singer to thrill me the way Judy did was Edith Piaf ... both women were legends and icons for many generations of women.
I LOVED JUDY...HOW IS IT THAT NO ONE COULD SEE HERE SHE WAS NOT WELL...????????
I just love Judy when she sings in half voice. Thank you for uploading... Sweet and tender.
Judy can break your heart. As Minnelli said, "She could will you to love her." 🧡
Billie, Janis, Maysa, Elis, Piaf, Dolores, Amy, Dalva. Não tem o que dizer dessas mulheres. Magníficas e únicas.

How insensitive
I must have seemed
When she told me that she loved me
How unmoved and cold
I must have seemed
When she told me so sincerely
Why she must have asked
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to say?
What can you say
When a love affair is over?
Now she's gone away
And I'm alone
With a memory of his last look
Vague and drawn and sad
I see it still
All the heartbreak in his last look
How she must have asked,
Did I just turn and stare in icy silence
What was I to say?
What can you say
When a love affair is over...
Beautiful interpretation.
Não conhecia esta versão com ela. Linda, assim como ela.
Best version ever recorded.
Maybe elis regina
この歌はアストラッドジルベルトが印象的でしたが、ジュディも歌っていたんですね😊ジュディの歌はどれもスケールが大きく胸を打たれます💚🍑🍒🍋💜
Judy's voice is just remarkable. There are moments toward the end of her life where you could hear the wear in her voice, but there were a lot of times when it was in much better shape than her 1967 Palace tour (such as this moment). I would even say that her voice sounds better here than in 1965. It might not have that ring to it, but she's not hoarse here.
I have wax of '"opening night at the palace" She got a 25 min. standing ovation. It's a wonder the building didn't fall down. You only hear of that sort of thing goings on at operas.
@@SBoz-bp5es Palace audiences 1967 went nuts over Judy, never had seen anything to compare to the frenzied adulation & Judy Garland deserved every moment of it
UAU!...Shiii.. WONDERFUL! MERVEILEUSE...
Thank you so much for this pearl! 🤩
O que dizer? Judy Garland supera todas as demais interpretações desse clássico! Uma emoção!
Frank Sinatra's recording of this was my favorite until I heard this, now it is a tie.
It's good..but the arrangement hasn't stood the test of time.
I have not heard a better interpretation.
S. Boz Look up Sting’s duet with OG composer Jobim, which turned out to be his last recording.
Diana Krall, if only for comparison's sake. I love her version, too.
Me neither...I will check the other two out.. but the emotion Judy got in her voice was fabulous.
@monroenorma
Thanks for your thoughtful feedback...Roger Edens said of Judy that she was "all diaphragm", meaning that her breathing technique was solid as any trained singer. Though Judy wasn't a classical singer, her breathing method ensured that she could sing with tone and purity at both the bottom and top of her range with either softness or her trademark "belt". She supported her loudness with a ver well toned diaphragm, and did so to the end of her career and on the 2nd verse here.
Sencillamente maravillosa y maravillosamente embriagadora. Una voz que es un placer para los oidos que invita a relajarse y a cerrar los ojos y evadirse del mundo. Un cariňosisimo beso donde quiera que estés
She nailed it!
que lindeza!!
Was never a fan but oh the courage.Loved seeing this. Thanks for the post.
so sad and wonderful
Love this beautiful lady
I'm not a Judy expert, so I will take your word for it. :)
It's interesting that Judy Garland and Claudine Longet do a very similar arrangement of this and both are beautiful versions.
BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for posting this;
wasn't she voted like the best performer of the century?
Love. Love. Love... 👑
If she is on pills here she still sounds better than 99% of today's singers. It is a shame she looked so old for 46 here but blame MGM.
She still sounds great here.
HERE I AM AGAIN : ALLWAYS ...ALLWAYS "UNBELIEVABLE " BEAUTY!...
