wow - the last time she sings that last "rainbow's end"... it's like the whole yearning of collective humanity for a better world is being expressed in one voice
Not to mention, for that fleeting second, you see and hear her at 16 when she was Dorothy Gale in the Wizard singing "Over the Rainbow" and compare it to the "Now" her, singing her heart out, as she did, until the end, which came WAY TOO SOON...RIP, Miss Frances Ethel Gumm. You ARE Sorely MISSED & LOVED....
The GREATEST....don't judge someone unless you have walked in their shoes....she was a survivor and had great. great, great talent.....she just got tired and died way to young but her memory and talent lives on....Love you Judy
No one has been able to sing a song with such power, emotion, and delicacy as the late, great Judy Garland. She was that unique and indomitability of spirit because she sang from her heart and so often, sadly, of personal experience. Her rendition of, "Smile", is probably the epitome of this description and expression....please listen to it. Without question, imo, she was the greatest entertainer in Hollywood history.
I’m very emotional tonight… this just made me bawl… how is it possible to love and feel for someone so much that isn’t here with us anymore and was before my time… I love you Judy. I know you’re free and at peace now
Judy was so perfect, my favorite version still is Audrey's because I feel it touches my heart a little deeper, but it actually speaks more about Audrey being able to convey emotion and beauty enough to rival with Judy, that is of course the most gifted singer Hollywood ever saw or will ever see, than any particular problem with her version, I could hear Judy singing for hours and hours and still want more. She could sing the dictionary and make it a masterpiece.
Judy was always at the top she set the bar standards and everyone else falls under the bar, after all who can compete with an iconic legend AND THE GREATEST ENTERTAINER OF ALL TIME 🌈🌈🌈
The artistry in Judy's voice, the amazing musical arrangement and look at that SET how it sets the mood before the song even begins....just amazing, back when ART meant something.....
"Moon River" always makes me tear up. Hearing Judy sing it makes me shed those tears. I don't think there has ever been another singer that can make a song so emotional and personal.
I agree with so many of the comments about this superb performance, but I would just like to add that another one of her remarkable talents is her wonderful sense of timing - anticipating a note here and holding onto another one there. Lots of singers did it but I don't think anyone did it as subtly as Judy Garland, not even Sinatra. I would like to know the name of the harmonica player - he's very good indeed and really adds to the poignant atmosphere.
Hauntingly brilliant "Moon River" from the depths of her soul performance is so touching & sentimental, only our precious Judy could infuse so much in to a song, timeless deeply moving performance has me coming back for a visit often...
Judy Garland's internal process as she sings a song like this is extremely deep - and what is remarkable is her ability to communicate it to all of us with such precision. The nuance of each phrase, each word is ever changing. THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW lasted one season - but from that trial-filled show we have forever moments such as Judy Garland singing MOON RIVER.
And she was a master since her early years, it's been 82 years and no person was able to sing "Somewhere over the rainbow" the way she did at 17 yo, so personal, so much control and technique. Judy is the greatest performer to ever grace Hollywood.
Part of what makes her performance great is her original phrasing. She pauses in places where no other singer would, but it is the right artistic choice for her and it deepens the emotion of the song.
I love when she looks at the camera because then you can smile and whisper, "Hello, Judy." :) Because when she looks at the camera, it feels like she's personally looking and singing to me. Touches my heart. :)
All of the raw emotion evident here just might be because she's thinking about the man who wrote these beautiful lyrics, Johnny Mercer...the love of her life she never married.
So beautiful and yet sad. I feel as if this was done shortly before she died. Her singing has always had that dreamy and soulful sound. In this one it feels as if she's telling us she's going home soon. 😢
She sings a verse in the middle that I never heard before. I love the expression on her face in the last few seconds with the harmonica in the background.
I once thought this song belonged only to Mr. Andy Williams who sang it SO well. I then heard Judy sing it, and WOW. The lyricist, Johnny Mercer, was so enamored of Miss Garland he very well could have written it for her. What connects Judy, Johnny and me is: "We're after the same rainbow's end Waiting round the bend, my huckleberry friend Moon River and me" And so aren't we all "after the same rainbow's end", and wondering will God ever deliver us from this earthly trap from which our souls long to be freed.
Quedé absolutamente impresionado por la calidad de interpretación, de matices, de cantante. Esta mujer es una artista de muy alto, altísimo nivel. Me dejó impactado. Gracias.
Her story is very sad. She must have been so scared facing all those unfortunate events all by herself. :( Such a wonderful voice and heart-warming song. Her lagacy still remains. :)
Completely disagree. Andy Williams' version was too produced, too smooth. This beautifully simple song is best sung with a stripped down authentic style. This is a song that you sing to yourself for company when you are taking a too long walk down an empty road.
I've p always loved Audrey Hepburn's original in Breakfast at Tiffany's so much that I decided it should be illegal for anyone else to sing it. That nobody else but Audrey could call it her own, so brilliantly. Figures that Judy, only Judy, would prove me wrong.
+labotamysausagedog Omg yes. There's one particular recording of that (I'd link it, but I'm sure know tbe one) that I simply can't make through with tears. High five. We may be kindred spirits.
I can't watch or listen to Judy without crying. She just tears at your heartstrings. She takes you into the very depth of her soul and you go willingly and joyfully.
Jesus! I just listened to Frank Ocean's version of the song because it was getting raves. I came hear to get the sound of that crap out of my head. Thankfully we once had singers.
Yes, Judy Garland was the greatest entertainer I ever saw on stage, in the movies, and on television. Only Sinatra belonged in such a superior league as the male representative. But NO ONE should discount Liza Minnelli, who easily BECAME the world's greatest entertainer for more than three decades, the latter half of the 60's, first half of the 90's, and ALL of the 70's and 80's. And as much as a segment of show businesses followers seem intent on purposely underrating Liza, she actually achieved much more than her mother did in achievements (and awards) from every element of the entertainment industry
I want to believe while singing this song she was singing it to songwriter and lyricist Johnny Mercer. The Actual Man that Got Away in 1941 and their love for each other lasted until she died. He wrote "Moon River" but he also wrote songs of his undying love for Judy Garland such as "That Old Black Magic" , "Midnight Sun", and "I Remember You".
Johnny Mercer loved (loved) Judy ("I Remember You" was written by him for her.) Herein she reciprocates nicely with this beautiful interpretation of Johnny's wonderful lyrics. 2/2018
Correct, an important distinction. Judy had this effect on talented people. Other famous songs inspired (at least partly) by Judy include Dont cry for me Argentina and Fairytale of New York.
The great Sinatra said it best that we will all be forgotten but Judy will be forever and he loved her and protected her from Lund. BTW Lund was abusing her and she phoned Tony Bennett for help at his debut! Bennett called Sinatra and Sinatra said OK and hung up. Not only did the police show up but so did some mafia boys.
Waiting round the bend... It is raw yes, but true, i might be too gay to adore Judy Garland, but this is true, very dramatic therefore. If you can't feel the pain you don't feel the love.
Nunca podre olvidar al Mago de Oz y ella interpretando Somewhere Over the rainbow.
my thoughts of judy garland can be summed up in these words. It seems that in the later part of her career she sang more with emotion and character which combined naturally with her effervescent style of singing. She put her heart into every song like it was her last song in her later years. She acted out the songs from my point of view even if while hitting all the high notes and that was what made her truly the greatest singer and her daughter Liza has followed in her footsteps most admirably.
With all due respect Liza is not in Her Mother Class as a singer. I've heard Liza hit many a clunker, but I don't ever remember hearing Judy hit even one.
I'm obsessed with this video and Judy Garland, this video makes my heart melt and also makes me want to put a gun towards my head and pull the trigger. Whenever I watch this 3 minutes 55 seconds video my inners loads with emotion I cant even swallow, this reminds me of all the bitter beautiful moments in my life which I will never live again. I dont know, this is something else...
How she just pulls you in. A delicious mixture of presence, strength and utter vulnerability.
Of all the versions of Moon River l've heard, and there have been many, Judy's is unique and superb.
you should listen to elton's version
Sempre un incanto,fa sognare
This arrangement is sublime. I miss variety shows like this. It is a Broadway show in your living room.

No one can sell a song like Judy Garland! The legend!
Saxon C totally agree, my favourite song.... only just discovered Miss Garlands version. Amazing to listen to and watch her performance.
You're right---that she could have had a great, straight, normal career in sales.
And a product 'guaranteed' to please.
No one can ever sing a song like this woman!
What amazes me about this woman, Judy Garland is how easy it is for her to sing this difficult song. Just like it’s nothing to her.
Judy Garland is so sincere, so convincing - something we so much miss in our time.
I sang this to my pet as she was being put to sleep to ease her pain.
Casey C ♡♡♡
Casey C that's so beautiful
Casey C I'm sorry for your loss
you mean killed
Casey C I'm so sorry😢

I can't get past the "rainbow's end" without tearing up
The saddest most beautiful song I’ve ever heard
Hauntingly brilliant "Moon River" from the depths of her soul performance is so touching & sentimental, only our precious Judy could infuse so much in to a song, timeless deeply moving performance has me coming back for a visit often...
She's back to singing of rainbows here- it is so poignant on so many levels. Love this.
I remember watching this when I was very young. Thanks for sharing

THAT'S how its done. She literally 'lives' that song to life. Legend. Icon.
You know. She was pretty good. Where does that leave the rest of us. Man.... such unbelievable talent. God Bless her.
I have never understood this song as much as I do now having experienced this magical performance!
Another heartbreaking, overwhelming performance. Simply wonderful :)
Yes
She's absolutely beautiful. her voice is seriously one of a kind
All of the raw emotion evident here just might be because she's thinking about the man who wrote these beautiful lyrics, Johnny Mercer...the love of her life she never married.
horacefeathers he was?
This is incredible
Don't get around much any more... Judy.
Wow what a voice and a talent Judy Garland was, will never be one like her again!
So beautiful and yet sad. I feel as if this was done shortly before she died. Her singing has always had that dreamy and soulful sound. In this one it feels as if she's telling us she's going home soon. 😢

Her heart is breaking and then you realize your is !
Judy at her best... I think of this show as a beautiful and last sing of the swan
Judy....the greatest voice ever.....
Una dell e più belle musiche scritte, con due stelle splendenti Judy Garland e Haudrey Hepburn
I once thought this song belonged only to Mr. Andy Williams who sang it SO well. I then heard Judy sing it, and WOW. The lyricist, Johnny Mercer, was so enamored of Miss Garland he very well could have written it for her. What connects Judy, Johnny and me is: "We're after the same rainbow's end

Such a magnificent, heartfelt performance.
People comment how "old" she looked. I don't think so. She looks life a pretty version of herself with no "work" done to her.
A powerful and poignant rendition. This is mighty fine singing and so much more.
didn't think anyone could sing this better than Andy Williams , boy was I wrong
Quedé absolutamente impresionado por la calidad de interpretación, de matices, de cantante. Esta mujer es una artista de muy alto, altísimo nivel. Me dejó impactado. Gracias.
Her story is very sad. She must have been so scared facing all those unfortunate events all by herself. :( Such a wonderful voice and heart-warming song. Her lagacy still remains. :)
only one July Garland.
the love song will live forever.
andy williams was always my pick for this song. but this blew me away. this is such a powerful rendition! she is irreplaceable.
Completely disagree. Andy Williams' version was too produced, too smooth. This beautifully simple song is best sung with a stripped down authentic style. This is a song that you sing to yourself for company when you are taking a too long walk down an empty road.
Beautiful love this
I love this version!
This is satisfyingly wonderful to hear.
She rocked this song!!!!!!
oscar madison when doesn't she?
¡FABULOSA Y ELEGANTE! Gracias por haber cantado así.
😅
Brilliant!
I've p always loved Audrey Hepburn's original in Breakfast at Tiffany's so much that I decided it should be illegal for anyone else to sing it. That nobody else but Audrey could call it her own, so brilliantly. Figures that Judy, only Judy, would prove me wrong.
My two favorite versions too! Audrey is so touching and Judy hauntingly brilliant...can't top them
the best. words can't describe it. Method singing.
Wow. I have never seen this. From the Dali-esque set, to the melancholy performance. Unmatchable.
This Song makes me Cry Every time. At the end of the movie when they are looking for CAT. / MANY TEARS, TEARS OF JOY. 1961)😻🐈
Simply breath taking performance!!!!!!
Tell me I'm not the only one who started bawling like an infant the second she opened her mouth.
I seem to find that happening a lot, especially when she sings Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
+labotamysausagedog Omg yes. There's one particular recording of that (I'd link it, but I'm sure know tbe one) that I simply can't make through with tears. High five. We may be kindred spirits.
such a deeply moving performance, Judy could take you to the depths of feeling in a song like nobody else ever could, she was so precious...
I can't watch or listen to Judy without crying. She just tears at your heartstrings. She takes you into the very depth of her soul and you go willingly and joyfully.
Nope, I was a total puddle! I feel like as she aged her voice gained a rich character that just tells of all her pain.
She says so much here... all her life is shown in her eyes... so bold, so fragile, such a great artist...
Jesus! I just listened to Frank Ocean's version of the song because it was getting raves. I came hear to get the sound of that crap out of my head. Thankfully we once had singers.
Agree 100% but for me Andy Williams owns this song. Judy was an absolute legend.
@@katiekress7287 Oh - I agree. There is nothing that compares to these singers today.
ART SHINES THROUGH PAIN !!!!!!!!!! BRAVA
Such a talent. Yet such a sad liife.
Damn....she song that like a soul sister.
There was only one Judy!

I love her version! and I love the added verse.....such passion and soul!
Che meraviglia……
Stunning.
seemed so easy for her. true legend

He wrote "Moon River" but he also wrote songs of his undying love for Judy Garland such as "That Old Black Magic" , "Midnight Sun", and "I Remember You".
Skylark and One for my baby also believed to be about judy. These lyrics paint paint an extraordinary portrait of her by a great lyricist.
@@johndoe6263 I didn't know that
Great...❤
woooow that was great
Judy Garland ... beautiful voice
I wanna dance like that
What a classy lady! Love Judy Garland... Thank you so much for uploading this wonderful video!
Неповторимая. Не будет такой другой.Никогда.
Johnny Mercer loved (loved) Judy ("I Remember You" was written by him for her.) Herein she reciprocates nicely with this beautiful interpretation of Johnny's wonderful lyrics. 2/2018
It was written by him about her.
Correct, an important distinction. Judy had this effect on talented people. Other famous songs inspired (at least partly) by Judy include Dont cry for me Argentina and Fairytale of New York.
I had always considered Judy Garland as an "entertainer"rather than a singer until I heard her "Alone" album.
The Maria Callas of the Great American Songbook.
Hermosa versión
The great Sinatra said it best that we will all be forgotten but Judy will be forever and he loved her and protected her from Lund. BTW Lund was abusing her and she phoned Tony Bennett for help at his debut! Bennett called Sinatra and Sinatra said OK and hung up. Not only did the police show up but so did some mafia boys.
Lund?????
Do you mean Luft?
According Nancy Sinatra, this occurred at 1968, not in 1963. I don't believe that Luft was implicated in this episode.
Frank Hgodges
So classy and beautiful. Genius,
This is raw and painful. She seems to be dissolving in front of my eyes. The set design is an acid trip through Americana via Salvador Dali.
Micki Finn I thought the same thing
Good observation!
That also parallels the contrasting harmonica with the vocals.
Waiting round the bend... It is raw yes, but true, i might be too gay to adore Judy Garland, but this is true, very dramatic therefore. If you can't feel the pain you don't feel the love.
You've been drinking Mickey Finns again, "Mickey." Feel so bad for you. There is help!
The one and only!
Ya la vida le estaba pasando factura a Judy, ve ve bastante demacrada y solo tenia 41 años.Esta cancion quien la interprete me gusta, es simplemente hermosa.

I love Judy's version of this iconic tune
SHOCKINGLY great

Conocí esta canción en la película de Audrey herpbum desayuno en Tiffany's , no sabía que Judi Garlam ya la había cantado
Judy has the best version!
Audrey a is not bad... I think is sweeter... And I also enjoy Barbara Streisand version
+Desirée Rodríguez Judy is my favorite singer overall, but Audrey's version is my favorite.
Judy's is best then Audrey...each version so deeply moving
Beyonce has don't the cover now.
Thanks so much for posting these videos. They're a real treat.
Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland played in their own leagues.
I don't think Sinatra ever had the vulnerability and honesty Judy had. He's got a gorgeous voice, but he isn't the force of nature that she is.
Well put.
Judy had more depth of emotion...listen to "Alone" classic blues Lp, outdoes everyone's
it's really speechless you just listen
