$228 vs $18 Hot Dog: Pro Chef & Home Cook Swap Ingredients | Epicurious
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 тра 2024
- Professional chef King Phojanakong from Cook Like King and home cook John are trading recipes and hitting the kitchen to make some of the best hot dogs you’ve ever seen. We set John up with $228 worth of ingredients and King’s over-the-top recipe while sending a more modest (but still pretty respectable for a hot dog) $19 worth of goods back the other way. Food scientist Rose dialed in to lend John some expert advice while chef King worked some magic to take his simpler ingredients to the next level.

love how King was unsure about hasbrowns sticking together, but still didn't took some extra things for the recepie. truly our King!
I honestly think, something like flower is totally okay. I mean if you look at 10 different people 9 of them proably have flower at home that's togehter with salt/pepper one of the few ingredients I don't mind that, but yeah class act from King to sticking the original given things
@@PR_311 do u mean flour?
@@PR_311 Technically, he DID use "something like flour", because that's what hot dog buns are made from. Besides, the Buns in a Blender joke was epic video. I'm still coughing from laughing so hard.
@Pheonixare 803 yeah my bad didn't paid too much attention
@@Eric1SanDiego1
Yeah but he could also use them as a side dish or make something different with them if he used "normal" flour for binding.
My point is just that I rather have them use things that most likely 99% have at home anyway (for me that's be flour, eggs, salt, pepper, after that most stuff is already a discussion and proably based on origin) than if they use some chefy ingredient that wasn't in the "cheaper menu" and most people proably have to buy ;)

King is one of the most appropriately named people I've ever seen. Truly, a king. And John seems like the nicest dude.
Welcome to my simple kitchen. I offer you the most delicious recipes in a quick and delicious way. I am grateful to everyone who supports me to provide more
Their bundle-of-stickness is way too over the top.
Can tell u have a reddit account bro
@@enneth8435 Just look at his PFP, soyface without the open mouth.
I don't know if it will be Chef King's last video. May the memories of him always alive in here. Rest in Peace, Chef King Phojanakong... 😭😭😭
I wonder if Epicurious would consider doing some shows where they simply provide a range of ingredients for the chefs and say "Create what you like!" - that might be really fun to watch, and quite educational too.
All pro chefs too would be cool to see all their different styles
Check out Chopped fam.
@@RobertIV I was sort of talking more about recipe design - so, each chef gets the same basic ingredients and they have to create a dish based on them. I think the pros would be able to come up with an idea easily but the level 1 chefs might struggle. Could still be fun and entertaining though.
Guys grocery games is kinda like that. U should check it out.
Chef: greener than my eyes
Producer: you have green eyes?
Chef: No-

I was hoping someone would comment this
@@Chefrym91 Go away
I just love how calm King talks. He even cooks calm and slowly. You can tell he's very comfortable on camera and is very charismatic and chill
Too calm. His "Buns in a Blender is the name of my new band" joke was so deadpan he broke me.
Welcome to my simple kitchen. I offer you the most delicious recipes in a quick and delicious way. I am grateful to everyone who supports me to provide more
He talk like Jimmy Kimmel
RIP Chef King, you were amazing and talented 😢
I didn't know he passed. He will be missed!
Chef king is really speaking for he's level. So creative!
When he used the hotdog bun as a binder I was blown away. So creative!
OMG John rocks so entertaining, I hope to see a lot more videos he is my favorite.
Welcome to my simple kitchen. I offer you the most delicious recipes in a quick and delicious way. I am grateful to everyone who supports me to provide more
Rest in peace, King! We're gonna miss you 💔
The moment King described what he planned to do I melted
Like that isnt a chicago dog 😭
RIP Chef King... you were my favorite pro chef
King is now with the Kings of Kings 🙏🏾 rest in power
Cmon, religion is faker than Biden being in control lol
Rip King, had to come back to see the great chef do his thing
I absolutely love how King is so chill and well coordinated. He makes cooking feel like a hobby and not a stressful chore. These kind of videos excite me and give me passion to try cooking. Im trash tho lol
Chef King will be missed forever
😢 watching this knowing this is King's last pro vs home cook episode. RIP KING
Noooo he died????
@@CowsRdumb Yep. He did a day after 2023 began. Not only he was overweight, but also suffered from a disease called Acanthamoeba. He was 54 years old.
@@GardevoirBoy1991 damn ok but you didn't have to put he was overweight 😩
😢
As a new watcher this breaks my heart😭😭😭😭
Finally, John gets to do this! He is one of my favorites because there is no pretension. Level 1 all the way, and that is okay!
He did one before.
He did a Spaghetti with Frank once, but glad he's back for the Ingredient swap.
Absolutely!!!
Give him a lot more of chances and he will start upgrading like Emily... 😍🤩
@@jbearclowater now I need to watch that!! ☺️
I appreciate that the pro chef mentioned how he was only going to use ingredients that that the other chef provided! Not all of the chefs on this channel will adhere to the original ingredients 🙂
They've really been doing that with the Pro vs Home Cook challenges lately, though. Gotta give them props where it's due.
@@maryudomah4387 I miss the occasional addition, at least when they were within reason. It showed how even small additions could have a big impact
@@lordsergal8783 Just like in this episode, an egg and some flour aren't the craziest ingredients, so it would've been okay
@@lordsergal8783 I agree. When it's ingredients that the home cook is likely to have, I'm okay with it and really like the addition.
The pro chef has never used an ingredient that isn't commonplace in the kitchen so this doesn't really matter. What matters is that this dude didn't actually make a hotdog.
Rest in Peace King 👑.You will be missed
I'm so interested by how offputtingly green that relish is omg
The answer is food dye
Chicago dogs are visible from NYC
@@Steveofthejungle8 i figured as much it's just so strange to me lol
It's a chicago classic brand
Go to Chicago and order a hot dog and that's what'll be on it. It's blue(!) food coloring that brings out the green.
RIP King. This is the last video he will be in.
I loved how well King explained his plans
Welcome to my simple kitchen. I offer you the most delicious recipes in a quick and delicious way. I am grateful to everyone who supports me to provide more
Rest easy, King. Heartbroken to hear of your passing.
I loved the way Chef King stuck to the ingredients he had, and STILL figured out how to make the dish he envisioned. That's ingenuity!
This had to be my favorite so far because chef king only used the ingredients from John, and he showed how to be creative with $18 of ingredients. I think thats what this series needs more of is chefs showing you skill and adaptability. Like I'm sure that heritage pork shoulder tasted nice, but man can I taste the skill in the other one.
John doing everything in his power to keep things family friendly 😆
"We all know what this looks like" - Yes we do John, and I was laughing along with that. He's so sweet and funny and damn he landed it. The end result looked fantastic!
pretty impressive what he managed to pull off with how little ingredients he had
Rest In Peace King fly high 🕊️❤️
Pro chef giving praise to NY hotdog vendors. So humble Chef King. ❤️
Love how extra the pro chefs are
Oh wow! I didn't know that Chef King was behind Small Axe Peppers!!! The Bronx Green is my go to everyday hot sauce!
This must be the last video with King Phojanakong on this channel before his very early 2023 death. Rest in Peace, King Phojanakong!
John: I’m going to make a Chicago style hotdog.
Everyone from Chicago: why is there ketchup on the table.
I’m not even from Chicago & just started watching and was all 🤨 why is there ketchup then?
ANYONE familiar with Chicago style dogs knows ketchup is NOT invited.
Edit: saw another comment saying the ketchup better have been meant for the tots. Which I suppose may have been the case, but it was so shocking to see the bottle while he said Chicago style that any reasoning flew out of my head. 😆
I was searching for this very comment haha
Yup. First thing I saw too
I literally threw my remote at the television when I saw that ketchup
@@Dotz_Sumimasen yeah, but what type of person over the age of 5 has tater tots with their hot dog (and most 5 year olds don't have a choice, it's whatever the lazy baby sitter makes)........ It's no different that putting ketchup on the Chicago style dog....... That dude is a for real psycho, and needs to sue his parents for raising him wrong!
RIP King
John is on a home cook level yehey!
Welcome to my simple kitchen. I offer you the most delicious recipes in a quick and delicious way. I am grateful to everyone who supports me to provide more
When King said "bussing",I felt that🤚😔😫🤌🔥
Rest in peace, Chef King😔
Going off from some comments I saw, I think the pros should be allowed some staple ingredients (eggs, flour, seasoning, etc) as a resort. Given that they’re typical ingredients that most people would have in their pantry or could buy from the grocery store, it shouldn’t take away from the essence of the challenge
They can, in fact they usually do. Common herbs and spices, basic things like oil and flour, etc. I guess King just likes to challenge himself
Frank from the older episodes grabs common ingredients like vinegar, flour, eggs, etc
I don't think it's against the rules. In fact, it's probably encouraged.
That basically defeats the purpose of the video. the Chefs should be able to show they can make anything taste/look good with the limited amount of ingredients they are given.
Gone too soon, King.
Cretivity with a few ingredients... Amazing.
RIP KING we miss you man
I can't believe it 😭. I'm without words.
May I request a shepherds pie or cottage pie episode? I would love to see what your chefs can do with a budget!
I love John! He's really fun and charismatic
Rest in peace King, you will be missed! 💔
Rest in Peace 🤍
how does Rose know everything about everything? she is incredible!!!
rip king ❤️❤️
King is so calm and professional 😭
Ok that is the most impressive thing I have ever seen here. What King made out of this ingredients is just out his world. Incredible
Absolutely
He was damn creative
I love how King took a risk and made it work.
Love these guys! And glad to see John is still on the show! - been missed!
Yay! Loved seeing John in this. His pasta bolognese video is one of the most iconic of these series.
I'm just happy john is back doing another one of these
the home cook was so entertaining, and the pro was just *chef's kiss*
omg John is so lucky. he got to make home made sausage. high key jealous. it was a dream from me to do that some day
Ahh cool John leveled up to home cook!!! That’s great!!! Congratz
Not how that works. They only have home cook and pro in this series. He'll be Level 1 next time on 4 Levels. Same as with Emily's many times on this.
@@defaultuser1447 I know that's technically not how it works but it FEELS like it and perception is a VERY strong factor for people.
@@Eric1SanDiego1 on point plus this is the first time I’ve seen John in this segment.
@@Eric1SanDiego1 There's some merit that, but Emily has been on Swap numerous time over the past few years and every time "OMG she got promoted!!!" I think many of us believe she's only Level 1 because the channel likes her in that role.
Really loved what chef King did. That was amazing
YESSSSS!!! Another ep w/ Chef King!
I love the vibes from both of them!
Chef King is amazing. I wish I could try both of these dogs omg
Its so good to see that chef king is back.
I love the series! As a home cook (lvl 2?), I can learn so much from both Chefs
John: I'm going to be super-safe...
John: _proceeds to use no gloves or any kind of tool_
I'm assuming that all instances of John using a glove or another device were cut.
The way my jaw dropped when his hand was barebacking that potato 😭😭😭
I love Rose's voice ❤️
positive wholesome vibes all around i love this one ^^
the pro chef price is always such bs. Including the full price for 2 (!!!) containers of salt, making it $18 just for salt, is like using bacon and including the full price of the pig.
Agreed! And $21.75 for brown mustard seeds? Even top shelf spices don't cost that much. It's so obviously inflated. Even many fans of this series find this to be annoying and unnecessarily deceptive.
Rest In Peace Chef King Phojanakong. You were such a lovely smiley man. He passed in Jan 2023 🕊️🕊️🕊️
Yay I love John and King! 🥰🥰🥰 two awesome peeps!
Love this series
Buns in a blender... there's an idea @Epicurious! They not only trade ingredients but also the equipment to make it.
I like how John was like I’m making a Chicago style hot dog
Me a Chicagoan: then why is there ketchup
It took me longer than I thought to find this comment. I'm not from Chi but I've spent enough time there to know that's frowned upon by most from Chicago
lol I noticed the ingredients in the thumbnail, haven't even watched the video yet, and immediately knew and also came here to find the comments about it!
I assumed it was for the Tater Tots
@@SirYupp Yeah, tots need ketchup.
@@SirYupp but in the recipe for the chicago dog it said ketchup that’s why I was like excuse me
Jon’s enthusiasm is amazing
When John said this is art I was like wait till you see the professional cooks Gourmet
What an awesome episode!
That korean style hotdog had me melting... Looks so good!!!
We will miss you, King
Just saw the comments about king my first ever video seeing of him really seem like a gentle guy hopefully he’s resting in peace
These Two *Chef's kiss* ❤
Amazing 😍 Greetings from Scotland 😊 Have a great day everyone 🌻
Gaufrette potatoes? Before watching further, I have to wonder if that's not just a fancy word for "waffle fries".
I love how John has upgraded to home cook from level 1 chef hahaha
This is amazing
So broke that $18 hotdog seems a lot
Well it is
18 bucks would be stupid as well
18 bucks for one hotdog WOULD be a lot. For a whole package and all the accoutrement...sounds about right.
I think it'd be cool to watch each chef make the meal the way they would and then make it how the other chef was going to then compare them
Rip chef❤️
the transformation of the basic ingredients is mind blowing
You two are amazing!!
We need more King on the channel
Noooo John you can’t put ketchup on a Chicago dog!
I would like to see more of SAUL.
Had to google sport peppers, had never heard of them. Great episode as always. Thank you Epicurious!
King and John are a good pair :)
John, I LOVE seeing you in these videos! Youre the BEST! Your comentary never ceases to make me laugh so hard my belly hurts!
Wait, John made it to level 2!!!!!
It's gonna be BUSSIN
Love new video each time 😄💞 can't wait for next one
I can't get over how great that relish is 😳
Love them
