Belief in make believe is an underestimated issue because it impedes our ability to cooperate with one another. It also gives ‘believers’ the false sense of reliable instruction from an imaginary source. If it weren’t for those issues, fine, believe what you will.

In my opinion belief in a God/Religion is a form of mental laziness, keeps the 3lb universe in one's skull safe and orderly. It gives people a false sense of "specialness " making it so very easy to give in to the "them vs. Us trouble that so often developes with Religion of any kind.

@ Agreed. It’s one of the greatest displays of intellectual laziness and an insidiously harmful to those who hold those views and those of us who have to interact with them.

Having listened to the podcast of this VLOG, I formed the impression that both men have a similar understanding of psychology, with the difference in real world applications being that John offers a shoulder to cry on, and Michael is a "get on with it, it is what it is", type of guy. The afflicted probably need a bit of both.

A belief in God, gods, religion, and spirituality lowers the level of anxiety, hopelessness, and helplessness.

Please read Freud: The Making of an Illusion and then we'll talk about Psychoanalysis... A Pseudoscience. Such a disappointment to see this from Skeptic!

A psychoanalyst? Good grief! The chiropractic of mental health! Why don't you go whole-hog and bring a phrenologist on the program?

Please expand on your thoughts. Is there a better model/mental health treatment? Is there a school of treatment you would advocate for? TIA.

Psychodynamic therapies are equal (in many cases better) than so called "evidence based therapies" such as CBT in terms of effect size from the meta-analysis that have been done. Psychoanalytical approaches are alive and well. Jonathan Shedler if you doubt me.

Just my personal opinion here. This was one of Michael's weaker interviews. It seemed like they were talking past each other most of the time, until they occasionally arrived at some banal point of agreement.

I'm with you Michael Shermer. I'm (slightly) more optimistic than Jon Mills, too!

Psychoanalysis is so expensive and time-consuming that it is out of reach for most Americans. Also the training is exclusive and expensive. I think Freud was a genius, and he had founding and valuable influence on psychology. Psychoanalysis, on the other hand, is way too insular and based on anecdotal evidence, not science. I see it as secretive and slightly mystical.

      Apparently Freud was debunked.

30 minutes in and we're nowhere close to the title, which appears to be click bait now. And Putin is not a psychopath. Jeez...

He may not be a psychopath but he is a trained KGB killer, and now he runs the show. I'm sympathetic to Democratic Socialism but I don't think he shares my views on that. Would appreciate your response.
