    1. Should we add flux before installing the new one ?
    2. Shall we worry not to overheat the new one ?
    3. how can we be sure that all 36 pins are connected ?

    Hey maybe you can help. Had a phone where customer used a cheap charger. Stopped charging/turning on. Would only boot loop with external power/charged battery.
    Replaced Tristar. Phone boots normally goes to home screen, unlocks, everything fine. Except PC doesn't detect it and doesn't charge or even show charge symbol. Think it's a bad Tristar replacement chip or something else?

    Really good tutorial. Just one question, because of the tight tolerances between each solder ball how are you sure they all line up ?.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  6 років тому +1

      It's tricky but surface tension makes it possible without being perfect. As long as it's within a certain margin and none of the balls are bridging pads, surface tension will align all of the balls & pads at the same time when they melt.

    The repair was excellent and the customer was pretty happy too I'm sure. I' gonna throw a critic but please don't take offense, it meant to be constructive : I can tell you a perfectionist and this camera problem annoyed u but u don't need to mention it 30 times !! :-) As a viewer I prefer when you explain more about the process of the repair, for example at one stage u explain that u prefer to clean the pads with a normal iron and not the micro pencil, that is a very valuable information, also the thermomass of the pcb that again is very important. So that was just my 2c, and I want to thank you for taking the time to post those videos. I really learn a lot. Oh and yes I just ordered my microscope from Amscope on Ali coz Amscope US is a ripoff (if u ship to London that is) and guess what I choose a SIMULFOCAL!!!!!!! God bless :-)

      I'm glad you can take some constructive criticism about repeating your issue with the microscope. Coz' a lot of folks here watching these repair videos want to learn and don't really care to know about how much you bench press down at the gym this morning. And this seems to be becoming a trend with the other repair videos. While doing repairs, they talk about their fight with their gf etc. I'm like :( wtf! Can we go back to, you talking bout what you're doing with this phone you're working on. So, I've subscribed and always looking forward for the latest repair you're doing. Thanks.

      I think if you have adjusted to seeing from one eye, depth perception may not be so bad. You would likely still be able to work under a microscope.

    @jaggerwild 7 років тому

    Your scope itself looks the exact same as mine. As long as you didn't pull a pad, your golden. May need to add memory to the computer, it always helps. Isn't the board a heat sink? What liquid are you using to clean with the tooth brush? Compressed air is dry, you just need to keep a dryer in line and cleaned out regularly(auto supply stores carry inline dryer's). Sorry I post in real time as I watch, I know you it's not live but is to me......

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 років тому

      If I had pulled any pads... I would have uploaded the video anyway! LOL
      This computer is getting kicked out of production duty pretty soon. There's a way better machine for it already in the shop being used up front. I'll probably try moving things around a bit before spending more money.
      These boards are amazing heat sinks and every component, as well as different areas of the board have different thermal properties so a component next to the one you're working on can be dissipating heat and then it doesn't behave like replacing the same IC on a different board. My first iPhone 6 Tristar replacement threw me way off by the extra heat needed compared to a 5C.
      I am using 91% ISO - I hear everyone ranting about 99% but that stuff has proven to be a bit tough to get around here and I haven't seen it worth the extra effort. The rest of 91% alcohol is 9% distilled water which does not conduct electricity without dissolved solids and dries totally clean with no residue left over.

      @ststele  7 років тому

      +johnkor I tried plain distilled water for awhile before I tried Branson EC but it really didn't work for much. A quart of Branson EC lasts a long time. I use 50ml each time I fill the cleaner every few days. All-spec sells quarts for $12. So after shipping it's gonna be $20. I go through maybe a quart per month with the small size of my cleaner. There are probably other cleaning solutions that will work though. Might be hard to beat 12 bucks.

  • @Ajni
    @Ajni 6 років тому

    Hi, i watched a lot of your videos, and just wanted to ask you what temp are you using to remove the shields? And one more thing - my iPhone 6 recently stopped charging, and after doing some research, i discovered that U2 (Tristar) could be the problem. So i got 2 new ICs, cleaned everything including the black stuff covering U2, removed U2, cleaned the black stuff underneath U2. Then i ran into a little problem, wasn't sure about the orientation of the IC, searching on google gave me two different orientations, so i decided to try my luck and soldered it the way i thought it should be. The phone turns on, when i connect the charger it says CHARGING, shows the charging symbol, power draw is around 500mA with screen on. As soon as the screen turns of, power draw drops to around 10-20mA... Any idea what could the problem be? Could it be that the U2 IC is bad? Also, IF the orientation of the IC is wrong, i guess the phone wont turn on, or it wouldn't charge, right?

    • @ststele
      @ststele  6 років тому

      I think your Tristar repair is good if the phone boots. I've seen one other phone doing this and I've replaced dang near everything and it still does it. I no-fixed it back then but now I know the only things I didn't replace were the PMIC & the charging coil on the other side of the PCB. Very weird problem... draws current through USB only when screen is on but still doesn't charge the battery. Weird problem

    • @ststele
      @ststele  6 років тому

      btw - I would call that a successful Tristar repair.. even if it didn't fix it. Just means it wasn't the problem.

    • @Ajni
      @Ajni 6 років тому

      Ok, so i replaced the tristar IC, again, thinking it could be defective, no luck, still does the same thing. Like the phone is getting power from the charger, but the battery isn't. Thinking of replacing tigris IC next. From what i fond on the web, it's also has something to do with charging. What do you think, should i try it, or if you have any other idea/advice, i'm willing to try anything. Oh yeah, one more thing, before i replaced tristar IC, the phone had battery draining issue, now it seems ok, battery only dropped 2% overnight. Oh, and thanks for the reply.

  • @chrislong7590
    @chrislong7590 7 років тому +1

    Easy way to clean the pads and remove the underfill is just use a micro pencil and load it with lead solder. Add flux, clean the pads with the solder and the heat will remove the underfill.
    You can then just wash it away with alcohol.

      Chris Long sir i have a problem..
      1: i took off the chip but im kinda missing 2 pads and 1 component on my board.. is there any other way i can fix it?
      2: how do i know if the chip is already attached on the pads itself after heating it up?

    • @chrislong7590
      @chrislong7590 7 років тому

      Which pads there are a few that are NC (not connected) the components can be scavenged off a donor board.
      Add a little flux on the pads then place and hold the chip gently in place. Add heat till flux melts a little. Then remove hot air. Remove tweezers slowly not to move the chip. Then heat with hot air till you see the chip sink down and it'll pull to the pads if you align it correctly.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 років тому

      You're welcome! Thanks for watching :)
      That is this station:
      www.amazon.com/Aoyue-852A-Digital-Rework-Station/dp/B000HDDXY0
      I've never been rich enough to use one of the higher end stations so I really don't know the difference. I've used a couple of cheap ones and some of them are just too cheap. I chose this one because it has a heavy ceramic heating element causing it to change temperature slowly and be much more stable. I had one that was way cheaper but the same brand name. It only had a wrapped wire element at the nozzle that would heat up to the set temperature in the snap of a finger... those are dangerous and unpredictable. There are many on UA-cam that will say you can't use anything less than a $600 station - that's not true at all. This one works very well and works all day long every day. For the price, I could replace it every year if I needed to. No clue what that vacuum pickup tube is useful for other than making noise. I keep it thrown off to the side. LOL

      +Anders Lindquist I will eventually upgrade it like I did the soldering station I love so much now. But I'm only running the air at 40% and temp at 380 (most of the time) so if I needed more ass, there's still lots of room to turn it up.
      It sorta gets under my skin to see people saying you can't use anything cheap because you really can once you get a feel for hot air and PCBs. I'll be upgrading for features other than hot air quality. This one takes me forever to go from 100c to 380c with the push button digital setup. Presets would be nice for saving time. That would be worth it for me. Thanks for asking!

  • @maccullete6491
    @maccullete6491 7 років тому

    You said it requires a lot of heat, and I've never tried it, how about using a low melt alloy to remove this IC chip? Would it hurt anything? Of course you need to clean it off the board real good before mounting the new chip. Just curious coz"I've never tried on BGA. I was thinking if you're not able to get all those low melt alloy residue off the board you might end up with a weak solder joints.

      Lowering the melting point makes it a lot easier putting the new IC on but no way to do it until the old IC is removed. I certainly wouldn't use that low melt stuff because of the weak joints tho.. leaded solder works best.

      BTW, you have got to be the neatest with the cleanest soooo organized shop I've ever seen! :) My old lady nag me everyday and said I'm a slob when it comes to keeping my shop tidy. I argued and told her " Honey, actually I'm a neat freak but I just need to get over it and so far am doing a damn good job at it" :)

    What brand q-tips do you use? They look better than the MG-Chemicals q-tips.

      Those are Dollar General brand q-tips from the cosmetics section. :) They're $1 per bag here. I may switch to something more "professional" one day but for now these are cheap and work really well.

    Sir, how do i know if the 'dot' of the chip is in the right direction? (iphone 6) which way do i need to place the chip, because i dont have the schematic program to see if im doing it right..

    • @ststele
      @ststele  6 років тому

      On most PDF schematics, there's a red arrow that indicates pin A1. A1 is pin 1 and is the direction the dot will go to.

    Hello again! Please help I just replaced tristar and when powered on there are only white screen with Apple logo and it stays in Apple logo. What happen if there are no tristar at all, is that same Apple logo then? I'm gonna reflow it again if the balls not melted properly and hope it works. :) or did I destroyed it/Flash drive with too much heat?

    • @mobile_deep_fix_finland
      @mobile_deep_fix_finland 7 років тому

      Ok. After reflowing it works and charging but screen is flickering at the point where screen is dark (slide to power off) lol

      +Inspiraattori I've had to restore them through iTunes before after a Tristar replacement and having issues like that.

      @ststele  7 років тому

      I didn't see this comment before my last reply.. A restore is not going to fix the flickering. Sounds like something must have went wrong.

    I know it's hard to tell. I have get a few iPhone 6 devices where phone is dropped. No power. I measure vcc. And it's short to ground. What do you think could be the issue? Or how would I go in approaching the solution

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 років тому +1

      When I know a line is shorted, there are many times I wind up putting current into that line at a safe voltage for any component on the same line - and waiting for heat. Usually narrows it down pretty quick. If it's not immediately obvious, the schematics combined with where the heat is helps to tell where the paths to ground are and narrow it down. 1 to 2 volts usually gives me enough current to find the heat source on VCC_MAIN. :)

    • @techknewz
      @techknewz 7 років тому

      +STS Telecom I agree. And I have done that. Nothing gets warm to the touch. Comparing voltage drop to a known Good and I see same numbers

    • @jaggerwild
      @jaggerwild 7 років тому

      Removing the suspected chip then testing, I assume would remove the ground.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 років тому

      Just realized you never said VCC_MAIN, you said vcc. If you're getting the same readings on a known good board that means the area you are testing is good.. it's gotta be something else.

    • @techknewz
      @techknewz 7 років тому +1

      +STS Telecom but I did mean vcc_main. Thanks for the tips

    didn't realise how much heat this chip tool until today. Pulled two pads :(
    forced it up thinking it was some underfelt holding it down

    • @ststele
      @ststele  7 років тому

      Oh man, the iPhone 6 Tristar IC takes crazy amounts of heat. I have no clue what is there that gets rid of heat so fast in that spot but just a few millimeters away and things float the way I would expect. They're tricky not to pull pads because the rubbery coating is holding them down too. You wind up having to pull on them pretty hard even when the solder is melted. Makes it tricky.. I did the same thing not too long ago and had to run jumpers. Hopefully your two pads are on an outside pin.

    • @ireilly91
      @ireilly91 7 років тому

      STS Telecom both outside at least, ran two tiny jumpers using solder brade. Don't think customers know how much work goes into these :S
