Haha, i know their name because as a Yes fan i knew that Rick Wakeman played with them a some point and i always wanted to listen to them at some point, but in the end i never did. The budget for LPs was not endless when i was 17-20 or whatever.

Kind of an obscure musical hole to dive into. I absolutely love their work. This album was a go-to for me in college whenever I wanted to change things up a bit. A lot of my neighbors in the dorm would ask me "What's that album you were listening to last night?"

This song was written and sung by different band members than 'Part of the Union'. I've seen them play this several times. They are great on stage (for a bunch of old men - I'm 58 myself). Rick Wakeman was their keyboardist on 2 earlier albums before Yes. The rest of 'Hero and Heroine' is great too. 'Bursting at the Seems' and 'Ghosts' are also great albums.

I saw these guys live with my brother. We were half the age of everyone else in the audience. Great show though.

One of my favorite albums. Funny story. My brother had a friend who wanted the final sequence of the song for his wedding. The DJ however started the song from the beginning. Hard to imagine that opening death dirge walking in for the wedding. (Then again it might have served as a wake up call.)

The Strawbs are a fantastic group. Started as pure folk and slowly embraced progressive rock. They became more progressive after Rick Wakeman left.
My favorite album is "Ghosts", also with keyboardist John Hawken (ex Renaissance). Beautiful mellotron.
Mid period albums are also top notch: "Grave New World" and "Bursting at the Seams".
"Part of the Union" is a hit written by Hudson/Ford but not indicative of the Strawbs sound.
There are two lead vocalists here: founder and main writer Dave Cousins and guitarist Dave Lambert.
Dave Cousins writes amazing lyrics and songs. Rick Wakeman loves his lyrics. On "Autumn" Cousins is more subdued. Think you will like the title track and other songs on "Hero and Heroine".

I would've subscribed just on the basis of this, but then I saw all the other great songs you have listed. Oh with what rapture courses through my entire being seeing your reaction to this piece of music! It makes my heart soar seeing someone discover The Strawbs (and knowing people are out there who know this band and urged you to give them a taste)! You should really check out Dave Cousins' "Blue Angel" from his solo album for more music similar to this piece. The Srawbs are a very special band indeed, evolving as they did from folk to folk rock to glorious prog, doing each very well. I can die in peace knowing I'm not alone in loving this band.

One of my favourite albums for the last 40+ years, never get tired of listening to it. I can never just listen to one cut, I have to listen to the entire album, then usually go on to a few other Strawbs albums after that. There’s a reason that it’s #44 on Rolling Stones list of the top Prog Rock albums. Thanks for trying it out.

@@robertcartier5088 They started out as a folk trio called The Strawberry Hill Boys, named for the district of West London where they lived. "The Strawbs" became a local nickname for them. They then changed the band name to "Strawbs", which is what appears on their official albums, but the nickname still stuck. Their style has evolved through progressive folk to progressive rock and straight ahead rock/pop with many lineup changes. Sandy Denny was with them in their pre-record deal acoustic folk period. They did record some tracks with her on an early trip to Denmark, but these were only released as a collection after they had become well known. So the name on that collection was a bit of a throw back.

Ever single autumn, the words: "I sense Autumn coming on..." plays in my mind, as I replay the perennial seasonal classic, which I finally got to see performed, in Charlotte, a decade or so ago. Always a favorite on the local rock radio station KSHE - they still play it today! Another really strong track on the Hero and Heroine album is "Round and Round".
The last part of "Autumn" features piano by John Hawken, who was in the original Renaissance lineup, with Jane Relf on vocals. The original Renaissance released the single "Island", which I believe Annie Haslam resurrected for her recent (delayed) Renaissance tour.

After the original Renaissance, keyboardist John Hawkin went to the Strawbs, and drummer Jim McCarty formed a group called Shoot, and recorded an album called On The Frontier. Shoot has a really good track on it (a soothing track similar to "Autumn") called "Head Under Water / Sepia Sister". It also has a nice Recorder instrumental backing. I actually bought a CD of this album directly through mail by Jim McCarty himself, because EMI never released it on CD.

Glad you're giving Strawbs another chance. They really are a great band that often gets overlooked. This is a great album, but not my favorite from them. I think I prefer Grave New World, but pretty much any of their albums from the 60s or 70s is gold. If you do listen to the rest of this album, do Hero and Heroine with Midnight Sun. They flow into each other and I always considered it one song. Other great songs from the Strawbs to check out: The Battle, Shepherd's Song, Hangman and the Papist, New World, A Vision of the Lady in the Lake, Tears and Pavan, Down By the Sea, Ghosts and Who Knows Where the Time Goes (from when Sandy Denny was in the band). Also check out the Dave Cousins solo album "Two Weeks Last Summer", the song "Blue Angel" is a masterpiece.

An air of mystery, haunting melodies, poetic lyrics, mannered vocals that can be hushed and sweet or raw with melodramatic emotion, big arrangements mixing classical and rock sounds often with liberal use of Mellotron, this is what Strawbs are really about. Dave Cousins (the main singer and songwriter) allegedly hates that Part of The Union became such a big hit and is what most people associate with the band. It's a one-off outlier by a bass player who left long ago. Shine On Silver Sun (the single from this album) would be a good next choice.

Thank you Justin! Another great review. This is my favourite Strawbs song from my favourite Strawbs album. Masters of melody, harmony, emotion, and pacing. They still tour! More fun facts: Most of this band backed up Wakeman on the 6 Wives of Henry VIII album. The keys player on this album was John Hawken. He was the original keyboard player in the 1st incarnation of Renaissance - pre Annie Haslam. Dave Lambert is a criminally underrated guitarist, and Dave Cousins lyrics are always perfectly composed. As for drummers, Tony Fernandes is the hardest working yet most restrained drummer I have ever seen. A bit like Michael Giles from the first King Crimson album. Dave Bainbridge from Iona is the current Strawbs keyboard player, and he also plays with Lifesigns. An amazing multi instrumentalist and a super nice guy. Iona was popular in the 90's and Lifesigns has only been around for 8 years or so. Prog lives! Lots of the recent stuff is excellent.

Only 2 members from the Union line-up were still in the band by 1974, Dave Cousins and Dave Lambert (the 2 vocalists/guitarists). The Hudson-Ford team had left to do their own thing. Hero and Heroine was an utter flop commercially in the UK but was quite successful in the US. It’s a fine album but before carrying on with it, you should consider re-winding a few years and hear the albums “From the Witchwood” (with Rick Wakeman on keys) and “Grave New World” (with Blue Weaver, previously with Amen Corner and later of the Bee Gees, replacing Rick). Classic albums both. 👍

Hero and Heroine is a fantastic album. DEFINITELY make your way through it. Most Strawbs fans find the third song to be the weakest on the album, but it has one of the nicest refrains, "Without your song, something's gone...something good enough to hang your heart on."
Personally, I find the entire album works when you make every song about the subject of Heroin use and addiction. Even the more romance/sexual lines from later songs take on a whole new meaning if they are about drugs and not a real woman... I'm not saying the band intended this, but the many stages of Heroine use are depicted, from euphoria, to withdrawal symptoms ("Out in the Cold"), to feelings of invulnerability, even religious ecstasy ("Lay a Little Light on Me") where, in contrast to corporate religion, the drug's high seems to offer something more substantial spiritually, etc. In the end, however, Heroin addiction is a deadly cycle that is almost impossible to break ("Round and Round"). "I knew right from the beginning...That you would end up winnin'...I knew right from the start...You'd put an arrow through my heart."
...from the song "Hero and Heroine"...
    Heroine wore fleecy white
She beckoned like some savior bright
    Shipwrecked sailors in the night
Were bid welcome to her side
Where one man's search must surely cease
    The irresistible white fleece
Led Hero in search of the peace
    Which she alone could offer
Thus he knelt before her feet
Wary lest their eyes should meet
He knew his life was incomplete
For he had yet to suffer
Understandably, people read meaning into songs that do not necessarily exist, but this album begs the listener to see it as a whole, and not its individual parts.

Haven't heard this since the early 80's - nice selection .
WOW - I completely forgot how much the opening of this , when the Mellotron kicks in , reminds me of King Crimson ' Court of the Crimson King ' and ' Epitaph ' . To me , the influence is unmistakable . 'Yeah , but , don't most Mellotron lines performed back then kinda sound similar ? ' , one may say ....... That's like saying don't most Fender Rhodes piano , Hohner Clavinet, Hammond organs with Leslie and Minimoog lead lines all kinda sound the same - lol .
Would love for you to check out both Epitaph and Court of the Crimson King - phenomenal tracks - all timers for me .
Unfortunately , good chance reactions to either get blocked but you owe it to yourself to check them out ( if you haven't already )
If you haven't heard those two Crimson tracks yet - do it TODAY off camera - thank me later

For those ( about to rock) who love this band, l say these things respectfully. This piece(s) is interesting in parts (Mellotron), mostly instrumental, I did not care for the vocals or the lead guitar tone or vibrato. The rest was okay, just ok. The winter chant is still in my head and I wish it would stop. Still, I’d seen albums and heard of the band for decades so I’m glad to hear them finally. I may have skipped Union? or didn’t like them.
Just not for me, so far, I know they’ll be back, till then, we’ll see.
XTC, English Settlement would be an awesome album choice. Any album beginning with Black Sea actually.
Take care everyone, just bought my bag of masks, so I hope you do too.

Strawbs are kind of funny for me. I like their music if I don't try to analyze it. Its great to just listen to it and take it all in. But if I try to break it down, it can fall apart for me. i agree, Dave Cousins vocals always struck me as what everybody thought was going to happen with Genesis. Oh, you just went with a guy in the band instead of bringing in a replacement? Weak. Collins proved up to the task. Dave Cousins, not so much. But, their song structures are VERY Strong. Sort of like Dylan. (another folkie turned rocker ironically) Songs are better if someone else does them.

Strawbs were never really a singles band although they released many. Only 3 were successful, and only one is well known outside the UK, i.e. 'Part Of The Union' which is one of the most unrepresentative songs of theirs. They're still recording and playing live though I think Dave Cousins is the only original member left. My favourite album of theirs is 'Grave New World'.

In my opinion the best Strawbs stuff is when Sandy Denny was their singer. I love her voice-- its one of the few that can regularly bring me to tears. And im not alone..she is still widely regarded as being one of the UK's finest ever singers, over 40 years after her tragically early death. Thankfully she left a fairly hefty legacy of music. After the Strawbs she was with Fairport Convention , then she formed Fotheringay and went on to a solo career. Although only with Fairport for 2 years , I think it was their peak, with the 2 albums Unhalfbricking and then Leige and Leif almost single-handedly starting British folk- rock.( in 2006 L&L was voted the most influential folk album of all time!) Id love uou to react to perhaps her most well known song- Who Knows Where The Time Goes , with profound lyrics well beyond her years ( written before she was 20).the Unhalfbricking album version is the best one.
Oh yea..by the way, two other admirers of her voice were Jimmy Page and Robert Plant...and so she became the only other artist ever to appear on a Led Zeppelin track... check out her vocal on Battle Of Evermore from Led Zep IV
PS Apologies for being so long- winded
    PPS love all your reactions

ua-cam.com/video/83W4KtPRXR4/v-deo.html "Moments of Pleasure," by Kate Bush. In this song from Kate's seventh album The Red Shoes Kate pays tribute to friends and family who have passed away.
"George the Wipe" was a tape op at Townhouse Studios who back in 1981 accidentally wiped a whole song that had been recorded for her album The Dreaming.
    "Maureen" was her Aunt.
"Bubba" was one of her dancers, his name was Gary Hurst.
"S'Murph" was her guitarist Alan Murphy,
"Teddy" John Barratt was her assistant engineer on The Dreaming and Never For Ever albums.
"Michael" Powell was the director of The Red Shoes movie.
And "Bill"Duffield was a Lighting Engineer on her very first live tour.
Composer and musician Michael Kamen arranged and conducted the orchestra for this song, expanding on Kate's original piano accompaniment. this song is one of my favorites from her!!!

Thanks for this one, I've always meant to check out the Strawbs again. I'm aware of them but never took a deep dive into their music for whatever reason. I like this one, the mellotron reminded more of King Crimson than Pink Floyd. Looking at Wikipedia they've had a LOT of personnel changes over the decades and they did not enjoy much chart success. They deserve further exploration. According to Allmusic they: ... differed from their more successful compatriots -- the Moody Blues, King Crimson, Pink Floyd -- principally in that their sound originated in English folk music rather than rock.

I'll admit to being a little surprised at some of the recs you've been sampling...the Strawbs would not have been a band on my list of recs, but everyone has their own tastes. One band I did recommend once was the *Moody Blues.* I noticed you reviewed "Question" and were not _especially_ impressed, which I think is fair. While I liked "Question" well enough when it came out, it was probably because I heard it repeatedly on the radio at the time and it's pleasing melodies got stuck in my head. I _do_ wish, however, that you'd review *_The Land of Make Believe_* _and_ *_You And Me_* on the _Seventh Sojourn_ album cuz they are IMO two of the best creations the Moody Blues ever put together. I promise that one or both of them will give you *chills* because they are _that_ kind of composition. Carry on, Justin, you're doing great work!

Nice song To say they're not progressive isn't really fair{comment below}, Always have to keep historic time frame in perspective And c'mon . sounding like the Moody Blues is never a bad thing What does it mean to be "progressive" ? Is it a genre by itself? Or is progressive any genre where the artist moves forward in his or her creativity? There is much in the jazz and fusion area that is progressive Doesn't have to be Floyd Yes Genesis etal Or today Steven Wilson and the like ... Love em all sure.... Was Cream progressive? The Doors? Jefferson Airplane? sure How about CSNY Joni Mitchell Tori Amos Laura Nyro REM? By definition ....absolutely Time to open the umbrella wider If you read up on alot of "progressive" artists, you will find that a lot of their early influences would never fit into a sterotypically "progressive" niche One for you Justin... Is David Sylvian and that style progressive? I think so Are u familiar with Tim Bowness and No Man? Has Sylvian -like voice

A lot of good people had this Strawbs album in their collection back in the day. Perhaps I just don't have the right memories to attach to the tunes; I always thought of them as the poor cousins of the true masters of English folk-rock, Steeleye Span. Reportedly, Ian Anderson was learning in the studio from them before recording 'Songs from the Wood'. The standout track from (I think) their first album 'Below the Salt' is 'King Henry'. It really fed into my interest in all things medieval. They also rocked pretty hard when asked politely.
Steeleye Span (not to be confused with Steely Dan) had a much longer career than Strawbs, and did not stray into prog land epic performances. They also had the amazing Maddy Prior as lead vocalist. You may want to check them out.
