Grace Darling, born Nov. 24, 1815, Bamburgh, Northumberland, Eng. -died Oct. 20, 1842, Bamburgh, is a British heroine who became famous for her participation in the rescue of shipwreck survivors. In 1838, she was recognized by Queen Victoria for her bravery.
Grace developed tuberculosis in 1842 and died in her father's arms on 20 October. Her funeral took place 4 days later at St Aidan's Church in Bamburgh, which was attended by hundreds of people wishing to pay their last respects.

Grace Horsley Darling was an English lighthouse keeper's daughter. Her participation in the rescue of survivors from the shipwrecked Forfarshire in 1838 brought her national fame. The watersons did the original version of the song.
Grace Darling was one of the Victorian era's most celebrated heroines. On 7 September 1838, she risked her life to rescue the stranded survivors of the wrecked steamship Forfarshire, a feat of bravery which changed her life dramatically.

How fun. Havent heard these guys in long long time. Further down this road is The Incredible String Band.
The Strawbs embraced very old English country songs of old and brought new arrangements. Fairport Convention also did a bit if this.

JP, thanks for the honest response. It's an "ok" song. They kind of remind me of Fairport Convention. That's a band you can get lost in. A deep history, with a real cast of characters going in and out of the line up. I'd put Sandy Denny up against Annie Halsam any day. Sandy and Fairport created British Folk Rock. Meet on the Ledge and Who Knows Where the Time Goes are stellar classics. And Richard Thompson, the original guitarist, truly in a league of his own. Google them, you'll see..., then listen.

'Grave New World' is definitely the essential Strawbs album. I think it represents their sound and feel better than any other. Some tracks on other albums are as good but for a whole album experience 'Greave New World' is it. Having heard your comments on this track, which is certainly a representative Strawbs track (unlike 'Part Of The Union' which you have also reacted to) I'm not sure Strawbs is a band for you.

    Choir & organ.
The song was recorded at Charterhouse School Church..... take away Phil Collins and Genesis was formed there, yup former pupils.
I'm led to believe that the song was supposed to be on the Hero & Heroine album ,hey record company decides otherwise. The song was about the hero who was a drug addict whose daughter, 'Grace' helped him get over his addiction. Cold turkey I guess.
The school organist played the organ on the track with the school choir doing the backing. Great song.

I love the Strawbs! I would recommend you listen to their song Tomorrow! It was written after Rick Wakeman left the band and was directed towards him. I would say my favourite albums by them are Grave New World, Ghosts, Heartbreak Hill and of course Hero and Heroine! Interesting little corner of Prog rock, they weren't as bombastic as say Genesis or Yes, and not the most adventurous as Gentle Giant. But nevertheless still Prog rock! They were definitely more of a folk rock pop prog band!

As a big Strawbs fan with a near-complete discography, I agree entirely with your assessment of this song. Musically, I love it, but I don't think Cousin's voice is made for this type of music. Cousin's voice is perfect on the creepy/angry/haunting side of the spectrum (same album, try "Ghosts" and "The Life Auction"). There is a similarity between his voice and Peter Gabriel's Genesis-era sound.

I really like this song. I agree with you that the elements that are most striking are the organ and the choir (and also the opening pairing of guitar and choir). I also don't think David Cousins' gruff voice is quite right for this one. This would have been magical with his old bandmate, the legendary Sandy Denny, singing. I even think that then-current bandmate Tony Hooper (who had a clearer, higher register) might have been a better choice--as evidenced by one of his contributions to their previous album that shares with this song an inspirational, hymn-like quality: "I'll Carry On Beside You" (one of my favorite Strawbs songs).

The Strawbs were the first band to use both Rick Wakeman and Sandy Denny, who wrote "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" and recorded it with them in 1967. She would become more influential with Fairport Convention (originally billed as the UK's answer to Jefferson Airplane but who went on to invent British folk-rock with the 11 minute one-take Sailors Tale). Fairport released the quintessential, and seminal, folk-rock album Liege & Lief however, with your taste JP, I think you'd like Pentangle, arguably the only folk-jazz group ever. I'll put these back to front. First *Porcelina of the Vast Oceans* by *The Smashing Pumpkins* (longer format songs such as are found on *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* ) ua-cam.com/video/Fe9dTVbAtcw/v-deo.html
(it takes a bit longer than 30 seconds to get started, so there's nothing wrong if to begin with there's no sound.) It costs slightly less than 10 minutes. It came to me as a recommendation of a certain Emanuele Sterbini, the Sterb part of the band *Sterbus* (they're Romans). That's kind of a "preliminary quality control PLUS". They make great music; they find great music.

*The Monks* were actually *Strawbs* (kinda). They were the very successful mock-punk band who created and crafted (craftily) *Nice Legs Shame About Her Face* ua-cam.com/video/hXPLtVfv9xE/v-deo.html (the transcriber has misheard the "uh" in the song)
For something more weighty from the album, you could try *Drugs in My Pocket* (but I don' t think it'd help).

Can't remember if I've recommended the Sterbus cover of the *Sea Nymphs* song, *Appealing to Venus* before. It would be a shame if I didn't. It's one of the sweetest 3 minutes of Vivaldi-String-Pop you'll ever hear (and also if I have already recommended it, this is just 400 or 500 words lost/ landfilled into your space - and worse things have been known to happen). ... oh ... here ... ua-cam.com/video/DpNq_nniP3Q/v-deo.html

This is a nice well-meaning song and we need these sometimes. But not in my playlist, sorry to say. Nothing that special for me.

Wasn't familiar with the Strawbs. I have the same take on this song. Based on the comments of others I may see if I like other songs better.

I liked the opening but then it kept repeating throughout the song and I got bored with it. It's also a bit saccharine for my taste. I've tried to get into this band on several occasions but it just doesn't click.

After the peak of Hero & Heroine, this album was just a bit of a letdown for me. I liked the title track, Lemon Pie, Life Auction, but Cousins' singing is better served when going full prog or really folkie. For this reason, the second side of H&H is the absolute best of Strawbs for me.

Dave Cousins has a unique voice so I don't think the Strawbs will appeal to everyone. In the late '70s producers tried to make Dave Lambert the lead vocal.
I connect with Cousins lyrics and his singing. Musically, the band connects with its use of mellotron and progressive rock influences.
However, the Strawbs were never a virtuoso band musically. Since Justin doesn't connect with Dave Cousins singing or writing, my guess is he probably won't like other songs or albums. I'd love to be proved wrong :-)
Perhaps "Hero & Heroine", "Grave New World", or "Hangman and the Papist".

Do people still go to concerts? Be curious about you and your audience's best and worst show experiences. My top two best Phil Keaggy and Todd Rundgren's Back to the Bars Tour. Two worst Rod Stewart (hands down) and Ted Nugent who was ear damaging too loud. How bout you?

Do music festivals count? Until Covid messed with the world, I was volunteering at the Winnipeg Folk Festival. Three days and four nights of music set in a provincial park. People either drive in daily from the city or camp. The camp grounds have quiet and not quiet sections (music parties till dawn... byo insturment). There is a list of past performers on their website.

Elvis Costello with his original lineup and the Lovell Sisters (later known as Larkin Poe) in 2009. Neil Young with the rest of CSNY in Winnipeg for the Living with War tour (if that is what it was called). John K Samson 2016.
