Yes! Keep listening to BRUFORD! Both of the albums "Feels Good To Me" (1977) and "One Of A Kind" (1978) have Allan on them! I think his best stuff from the 70's is with Bruford and Tony Williams.
Totally agree with this -- the first New Lifetime record the first Bill Bruford record, and the first band Bruford record, are some of my favorite Holdsworth from any time period.
"Back to the beginning" from "Feels Good To Me" is way beyond its time!! Holdsworth's solo in this song is hypnotizing!
I also love "Fainting in Coils" from this album. Also "The Sahara of Snow", "Hell's Bells"... well the whole album really :-)
Every track is a masterpiece, but Forever Until Sunday is the show stopper.
Jeff Berlin is the bassist on this album and he's an absolute beast. definitely one of the greatest bassists to ever live.
He certainly thinks so!
Bruford suggested Jeff Berlin as the bassist for the 80s version of King Crimson. According to Bruford (and my memory), he said Fripp wanted someone less busy, and they hired the very different Tony Levin.
@@Bawookles Geddy Lee thinks so too!
Joe Frazier is a bass masterclass
I remember when the album One Of A kind by Bruford first came out and one of the top music mags reviewed the album. They slammed Jeff Berlin as pretentious, because they thought he was faking all the fast notes. Jeff Berlin is a genius, was way ahead of his time and his playing clearly went over the reviewers head. Shortly after this album came out I went to see Bruford live and was bummed Alan Holsdworth had left the band. Another guy had replaced him on guitar and he lacked the melodic fluidity of Alan.
There are now plenty of guitarists out there who can play exactly the same as Alan Holdsworth, in fact better. They are so inspired by his innovative style, they have perfected it to a point beyond the way Alan played it. Alan was pioneering a new style and was constantly trying stuff out. Sometimes it worked and was masterful, sometimes it did not. The new guitarists take all the stuff that worked and practice it to perfection, so that it is repeatable even when improvising.
I listened to this album every day for a year. This was so influential I dropped guitar and became a drummer.
Bill's the best and he plays with the best. Could listen all day. Thanks Nick and Lex.
Oh yes please!!!!!
One of my fave bands and one of my fave albums!
Thanx so much for all your reactions!
Cheers from Australia!
How can you say you are a huge Allan Holdsworth fan but have never heard the 2 Bruford albums he plays on? That is pretty much for most people the entry point into his work.
I first heard him on Gong's "Expresso." AMAZING.
Wore this album (One of a Kind) out In my youth
Nice one!!
And yes, having met Alan he is so humble & down to earth
He is missed
Me too! I treated this album and tape like it was the Holy Grail or something! haha! I went back to it over and over again...I just loved it. I was deeply into becoming the best drummer I could be and guys like Bruford, Neil Peart, Rod Morgenstein, and Stuart Copeland were always in my ears!
OH YES!!! Way to go guys. So glad to see someone finally react to Bruford.
same!
Im 70, a progressive composer & musician & have seen Bill in every project hes been in. He payed with No slouches ever... Excruciating talent. Thanx you two... Very cool what you do... You have the appreciation.. Avodia~
Nick your reaction to this tune was pure gold. Dig into Bruford's "One of Kind." It's filled with the magic of Holdsworth, Berlin, Stewart & Bruford. This albums holds up beautifully. First heard it at a friend's house in 1983.
Hi Nick & Lex; I just watched most of your Yes and Rush reaction videos. I had never heard this Bill Bruford track so it is my first reaction too - it was amazing; so fast paced and exciting, from beginning to end. I've really enjoyed seeing your reactions in all of the videos I've watched of you two; so much so that it has kept me up until 2:40am. Thanks for this video and for all of the others; you're doing a great job of it all.
Thanks so much for diving into Bruford's late 70's band! Love this stuff so much.
I love this band!! Try Beelzebub from Bruford's first solo album, awesome drumming (awesome everything). I agree with Lex on Holdsworth. He was one of greatest who ever played guitar, but I always liked him best when he played in bands like UK, Bruford, Ponty, Gong, Soft Machine, and on and on. He just seems a little more melodic with them, or something. Bruford also drummed with King Crimson, btw.
Bruford was such an amazing group - Jeff Berlin, Alan Holdsworth, and Bill Bruford - wow - just wow!
Don't forget the keyboardist Dave Stewart.
One of the best of Allan's solos and I know he was pleased with this one. That low note around 5.50 is to die for. Thanks for posting.
I think John Clarke plays guitar on this album.
Hi NicknLex ...Five G is off the album 'One Of A Kind' by Bruford. You are missing out bgi time if you have not played this album. Play it often. The melodies and odd time signatures are beautifully recorded. It is one of the best albums ever created. Every track on the album is a masterpiece. This track really shows of the incredible Jeff Berlin on bass. The whole album is full of great compositions with epic musicianship. Drummer Bill Bruford left Yes and formed this band, but it is my favourite Alan Horldsworth album. He really shines because the compositions are really strong, allowing his guitar to sing. In the middle of Five G, Alan Holdsworth launches into a melodic solo, then part you thought was a keyboard is actually Alan Holdsworth on guitar using a wah wah pedal which he leaves half open to play with the nasal mid tones, then he goes back into the melodic solo again. The only keyboard solo in the track is the electric piano improvisation.
When I think jazz fusion music like this immediately comes to mind. This was a such a great band!!!
Amazing album, amazing band, great players, played this record to death when it came out, still holds up to this day!
Another of many brilliant drummers. Add in the late and great Allan Holdsworth and the result is music magic!
That is one of my favorite albums of all time! You'll love the rest of it too. Not a less-than-amazing piece in the bunch.
This is KILLER! Yet another one to try and find on vinyl. You guys are responsible for creating my shopping list!!!!!
Goooood choice. Jeff Berlin, a most amazing virtuoso bassist.
This is from the album "One of a Kind". This is the best album Bruford did, either as Bruford or Earthworks, IMHO. Great guitar, too by Alan Holdsworth.
Just so sublime! Love the feel and drive of this song. Bill Bruford, Allan Holdswortth, and Jeff Berlin on bass.
From the album ONE OF A KIND, one of the great albums, that I also recommended when you played the Holdsworth piece a few weeks ago. That's my pal Jeff Berlin on bass. He is astounding. More from this Bruford and Holdsworth. One you might also really like from Bruford's first album is IF YOU CAN'T STAND THE HEAT also with Allan has a stunning guitar moment.
That's the incredible Jeff Berlin on Bass! Great album! This is from Bill's album "One Of a Kind", from 1979 and it's great! Check out more of this album! :)
Big fan of Bruford, this album i think is his best one!! One Of A Kind!!
Only love for this one! ❤
Wow! I never delved into Bill Bruford's solo output before. This song was like sweet soothing ear candy. Thank you!
There is a lot there to explore!
Bruford - "One of A Kind" is pure ear candy, the whole album stands up to repeated listens so well, because you will discover something new in the interplay each time you play it.
Please react to “Selling England By The Pound” full album By Genesis, You Will love it, is a master piece
Maybe you should tell Nick that Allen H. was on this album! (that would have been cool, if they had collaborated) His musical attitude would have been great with Genesis.
In 1975 Bill Bruford toured with Genesis.
Hell, I did not know that, yes that is great
Collins is a big Bruford fan!🗿
@@sheldonwheaton881 True. Bill's drumming style just didn't fit Genesis. He was much better suited for fusion and jazz.
...played this album to death...masters at work...classic
One of the best tunes ever!
Yes!! Bill and Allan!! My heroes!! Great video!!👍👍
Had to listen to that twice in a row!!
Amazing!!!!
Love this song, and such a fun ride watching your reactions. Nick, it's so awesome that Lex is open to and appreciative of very complex fusion music, as a typical musician's wife's reaction to when the Bruford album comes on is to make a poop face and leave the room, lol! You two are officially my favorite reaction channel at this point. Ill keep plugging away about Tony Williams Lifetime with Holdsworth, Proto-Cosmos is a great song that I think you both will enjoy.
My favorite drummer and favorite fusion album ever.
Wow, that was sweet! I heard something in the mid 80's that he was supposed to release an album called "The Bill Bruford Project'' and I'd even heard a cut but I've never heard anything on the subject since. Nice to hear cuts like this from him. Always was a Bill Bruford fan. 😀
With Bruford and Holdsworth you can't go wrong. They are masters of fusion sounds. I have "One of a Kind" and this one. But I'm honest, I haven't heard it in 30 years. Just notice that it's time to get the LPs out. Thanks for that. Greetings🇩🇪
Having the same experience man - so cool to rediscover tunes/ albums I haven’t listened to in absolute years/decades AND discover “new” (to me) music and bands that Lex & Nick & this awesome community bring to my ears.
Absolutely insane playing.
The middle solo is a keyboard , Dave Stewart
I liked this when I saw the cover. Great job guys.
All you need to hear is that snare to know it's Bruford. Excellent Choice.
Love it..you guys are tops...keep em' comin'...all my best Kent in Ohio
Love you guys! Love your taste!
Thank you for your kind words and support!!
As a fusion fan it's cool seeing you guys reacting to fusion music! Great job!
I met Holdsworth once such a good person,so down to earth. Feels Good to Me and One Of A Kind by Bruford are well worth digging into. All of these musicians are masters of their craft. You guys are great keep on.
One of my drum heores! Had the pleasure of seeing Bill Bruford live in the late 80'ies with the Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe outfit, (with Tony Levin on bass) but that was music from the realm of Yes! This was very cool - thank you for this reaction. I know you've done some reactions to Yes, but I can't find Close To The Edge in your playlist - please, do this piece; it changed my perception of music profoundly!!! Cheers! ...
Lively tune with all the musicians being so great!Bill was so innovative!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻❤️❤️❤️
So that's how you dance to jazz, the Noddy Nod, look like a pair of bobble heads.
This group is so killer!!
Thank you for reacting to Five G! - Others who joined Bill and Allan on this album is the legendary bass player Jeff Berlin and Dave Stewart on keyboards.
Great stuff, gang 👍
Bill once played a free clinic, about a 15 minute walk, straight down the street. It was in a local theatre, next to the music store. I was star-struck, caught off guard as we passed one another, outside the venue, prior to the show. Bill was very funny, explaining how some rock drummers resort to gymnastics, while his jazz heroes made the impossible look easy. With economy of movement in mind, he explained how he changed his toms tuning to a bilateral setup, demonstrating how you save time & energy, crossing over your kit.
A brilliant, entertaining legend in his field. 👍
🇨🇦
🤩🎶/🌛♥️‼️ (Me over the moon!!) THANK YOU 🙏🏼
Great Album , "one of a kind " worth checking all of it
So cool to rediscover this Bruford /Holdsworth recording I haven’t listened to in years, absolute f*kn years. Plus it’s so cool to watch an A.H. devotee like Nick react first time... and the lovely commentary on Alan’s sadness/ emotion made me for the *first* time think of Billie Holiday... I’ll have to explore that more... I was just now thinking maybe some folks’ take on A.H. being “cold” (which I *never* understood) is maybe because he is so far out of the realm of their musical experiences and expectations of a guitarist that they can only admire his incredible technique & technicality, but on first listen can’t comprehend & connect with the emotions of his playing?
Another fantastic choice guys! The Bruford solo stuff is something I still listen to fairly regularly. I see a lot of suggestions in the comments already, but I'll suggest one from each album. From "Feels Good to Me" - "Back to the Beginning", which also features unusual vocals from Annette Peacock. From "One of a Kind", I'd go with "Fainting in Coils" which features a small reading from "Alice in Wonderland". Both pretty cool tunes.
Holdsworth referenced this song as the only solo (of his own) on _One _Of A Kind_ that he liked. So much great guitar soloing on that album, and he only really liked one. He was really tough on himself.
From Bruford - One of a Kind 1979:
Bill Bruford, Jeff Berlin on bassguitar, Allan Holdsworth, Dave Stewart on keyboards, Eddie Jobson on violin.
A great reaction to a great song. Allan Holdsworth is so underrated, it's great to see that you're a huge fan. I suppose you know his work with Gong on the Gazeuse ! album. If not, dive in !
I remain stunned that you say you dedicated a number of years listening to Allan, but there are so many classic tracks you haven't listened to? If you are looking for the current definitive reference work on his music, I strongly suggest you purchase Devil Take the Hindmost by Ed Chang. Btw Jeff Berlin was not slapping with his thumb in the conventional way on the opening of the track, but instead using his fingers to drum on the strings. Please tell me you have listened to the rest of Bruford's work with Alan, because if not, that is a huge hole in your experience! You also need to understand that Allan went through different phases in his playing when you talk about this being less sad. Also, remember that Allan was not the main songwriter in Bruford, and that Dave Steward had a huge influence on those albums. Gosh I could really give you so much information on Allan.......
"Fainting in Coils" is quite tasty.🗿
you guys just jumped right in the middle of a large pool of great Jazz/Prog/Rock music, UK, Bruford and closer to KC,
Four of the greatest musicians ever.
There are points in this song where Allan Holdsworth sounds just like Charlie Parker. This is just amazing!
Woohoo 🙌 I mean seriously!! 👍✨❤️🌸🌼
The guitar solo you didn’t like was actually Dave Stewart on keys. While he’s comping rhythm on synth. He’s great and a major part of the Canterbury scene, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Steve Hillage. Another fun rabbit hole :)
It just does not get any better than this.
Bill Bruford percussion
Jeff Berlin Bass
Dave Stewart Keyboards
Allan Holdsworth Guitar
From the album by Bruford, "One of a Kind".
Great choice! Dave Stewart on the keys.
If you want more Holdsworth, try Pierre Moerlins “gong” - “expessso II” or “Gazeuse” great works!
That worked .
Tempo modulation stood out , in a good way .
Bruford's chops transfer well from Yes , to straight fusion .
I've yet to question where Holdsworth's place is in any ensemble .
There is an audio on Y.Tube of Allan jamming with Eddie Van Halen on this song in 1982. Probably around the time when Eddie helped Allan get signed to Warner Bros Records. There are also excerpts from the 1979 live Bruford group DVD "Rock Goes To College" with Holdsworth playing a strat on UA-cam.
Cool guys I've listened to some of Bruford'd solo stuff but need to delve back in. I can see that Allan inspired Frank Gambale and many more great players I'm sure. You guys would probably enjoy Al Di Meola(Race With The Devil On a Spanish Highway) too!
The older I get, the more I fall for this fusion stuff 😉
@@TONE11111 very nice, indeed. Passages with the female "la las" almost remind me of Stereolab.
Wow! Didn't expect to see a reaction to any Bruford on YT. One of a Kind is unique (clue's in the name). Not to mention great. "The Abingdon Chasp" from this album is also very good. Mind you, the whole album's great. The keyboard player is Dave Stewart (not from Eurythmics) and you should really check out National Health, a grossly overlooked band. Dreams Wide Awake, From "Of Queues and Cures" is recommended. There's a killer keyboard solo at the start.
The second (depending how you count) Bruford record is incredible. The first is, too, but the second is the one with the consistent quartet -- which means more Holdsworth, of course. The first one has some songs with Annette Peacock singing -- a sound unlike any other to my teenaged ears at the time. They actually played one of those ("Back to the Beginning") on FM radio when it came out. Can't imagine that happening now!
You got to watch the gig Rock goes to college. They play this piece of art. Extraordinary!
Just these four and no one else:
Guitar: Allan Holdsworth
Keyboards: Dave Stewart
Bass: Jeff Berlin
Drums: Bill Bruford
More Bruford, Please. Try the Feels good to me album.
The Drum also waltzes is trying to sneak in at the end lol 🙏
Good stuff. This tune reminds of the Electromagnets' "Dry Ice", which preceded it by a number of years (and I personally liked Eric Johnson's playing just as much if not more than Holdsworth's) - if you've never heard of that band, you might want to check them out, I'm sure you'd enjoy them.
?Curious if anyone listened to Bruford & Levin & Islam on David Torn “Cloud About Mercury” back in the day? The aptly ephemeral name eludes to the slithery instrumentation/ production that also features some screaming layers of distortion. Would not recommend for reactions - I’ve heard someone at E C (M) fish slaps with a frenzy any UA-cam posts of that label’s music. BUT, if you look, there’s an hourlong show from 1987 Frankfurt Germany with Bruford playing one of the smallest, most electronic kits I’ve seen of his.
Feels good to me, yes one of a Kind! Check out King Crimson 3 of a perfect pair!
Oh, and speaking of Holdsworth, you should get a bottle of Glenmorangie Whisky and drink some of it while listening to "The Sixteen Men of Tain." Then you can react to the drink and the music that was inspired by it.
OK. You guys need to check out this live gig by Bruford. It features "The Unknown John Clarke" on guitar. PROFOUND! Part 1: ua-cam.com/video/4BXzlBOXzCg/v-deo.html. Part 2: ua-cam.com/video/KZEgqGyEDJc/v-deo.html. Part 3: ua-cam.com/video/ODnnZ6DWNoo/v-deo.html
I had a pint or two with Alan Holdsworth in a pub in Bristol UK. A very humble guy, typical Northerner, straight to the point and no side to him.
I think the version I have of this is a bit different. Is there an alternate take?
Allan Holdsworth on Guitar has the greatest, most creative note-choices I've ever heard. I'd truly put him on a level with John Coltrane concerning how groundbreaking and innovative he was.
If you liked 5G, try listening to Bruford's "Back To The Beginning" off the self titled "Bruford" album, which contains what I feel is the greatest Holdsworth solo on any Bruford album. Enjoy.
Bruford is proven and time tested. Fantastic. If you like this prog jazz you'll like Return to Forever bassist STANLEY CLARK..."School Days" album and title track from 1976. Same vibe.
Allan Holdsworth♥️
Allan was way ahead of everyone else, the only guy to really come close to him in his melodic and harmonic sense, was Shawn Lane (rip). Someday people will get it, but no time soon. Its a lot more than just playing with blinding speed.
Your reacting to "Take a Pebble" would please me no end. If you want something other, try "Taking the Hit" by Joe Bonamassa live at Rockpallaste.
Okay 👌 you know Bruford left Yes to go with King Crimson? Yep. In their prime. So.... I left another comment you should listen to “Red”. Yep. Bruford.🤐 I told you I have the best musical taste.
Is it okay to mention another UA-cam-er? Music teacher Rick Beato just posted a video about Allan Holdsworth, and I thought "Nick needs to see this!" The title is "The Everest of Guitar Licks"...
Thanks for heads up - I dig Rick Beato but haven’t kept up with him lately so I’ll have to go there next!
I've seen this performed live at the Bottom Line/NYC on tour promoting "One of a kind". Jeff Berlin was the best bass player, second to Jaco. Allan was not part of this project...another guitar player John Clark...but still a great moment in time!
Part of the tour..I meant.
Abingdon Chasp. . .Apparently Jeff Berlin still uses Leo Quan bad ass musical products.
Try a track ( Up North or My Heart Declares A Holiday) from the band Bill Bruford created, Earthworks. It's a personal tatste thing, but I really prefer Earthworks to most of Bills other solo stuff. And time to try some Steve Howe solo stuff, maybe start with Sketches In The Sun, or something from his Time Album like Cantana no. 140 ua-cam.com/video/cpd3GK_vBhU/v-deo.html
the solo you thought was a keyboard was Alan's guitar through a modulating wah filter. very unusual for Alan but he fits in with many styles never given credit for. He's not a Blues player but his guttural screaming is so much like a horn player that no one has replicated before or since. He plays guitar like a sax. tons of legato with complete facilities to play anything at any time. rip AH
