Bobby wasn't just a tenor, his incredible range reached so high that he was a counter tenor, meaning he could sing in the range of a woman's contralto. Absolutely NOT falsetto.
      RIP, Bobby Hatfield.
So many miss the part of the joke that infers the "Hatfield and Tenor" name was too similar to the infamous Hatfield and McCoy feud.

Written as the music score for the Prison Movie "Unchained (1955). The music was composed by multi award winning composer Alex North with Lyrics by Hy Zaret who lived to be 100 years old. Ten years later in (1965). On the Andy Williams Show. Counter Tenor Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers and the NBC Studio Orchestra gave a performance that was one for the ages. It has been considered by many in the entertainment business as the greatest (Live) television performance ever. And the rest as they say is history. Andy Williams was one of the greatest singers ever. He sang multiple movie scores that have become popular and turned them into huge hits that became platinum. One of them happens to be "Love Story." He is worth going down the rabbit hole. Great reaction to Bobby Hatfield. One of the greatest counter tenor voices in Rock & Roll history.

Andy Williams' show was done to a high standard. Judging from this, you are seeing a restored version which does Bobby justice. The three also did another song together same episode that is worth watching.
As you can see, he knew how to use a mike properly.
This and the one by Sam Cooke are the 2 best renditions in my mind. Great singers.
He had a 4 octave range but in later years figured he had added a note. Wasn't forcing his voice as you can see by how relaxed his mouth and throat are. As others have said not falsetto but a counter tenor.

    Unchained Melody:
    Bobby Hatfield live performance.
    The Andy Williams Show-
    Episode #4.5
Episode aired: Monday, Oct 25, 1965:
Robert Lee Hatfield (August 10, 1940 - November 5, 2003) Bobby Hatfield, who had a higher countertenor voice to Bill Medley’s, William Thomas Medley (born September 19, 1940) baritone, sang lead on this track. It was his idea to record it, since Medley and Hatfield were each allowed to choose a song to sing as a solo vocalist on their albums. As Medley tells it, Hatfield knew the song well, and was a big fan of the Roy Hamilton and Al Hibbler versions of the song.
*In Nov. 2003 Hatfield died of a heart attack at age 63.
The Righteous Brothers version was a huge hit, but it was recorded with far more modest expectations. Phil Spector considered it album filler and released it as a B-side. The single had "Unchained Melody," with no producer credit on the label, as the flip to Gerry Goffin and Carole King's "Hung on You," but many DJs preferred "Unchained Melody" and played that one instead. This infuriated Spector, who subsequently left no doubt (actually calling DJs telling them to play “Hung On You” not “Unchained Melody “)as to which side of a Philles single was the A-side.
    * The famous climax of this song where Bobby Hatfield sings the high "I need your love" line wasn't how the song was written. In an interview with Bill Medley, he explained that Hatfield did two takes of the song, then left. He would often reconsider his performance and come back later to change it, and that's what he did on this track, returning to ask Medley if he could make an edit. This was no easy task, since with a maximum of four tracks to work with, you had to record over part of the original take, but Medley accommodated and Hatfield delivered that soaring vocal line. Said Medley: "I punched that in and before he left he said, 'No, I can do it better. ’And I said, 'No, you can't.' [Laughs] And I think it's a big part of that song."
    * This was released on Philles Records, Phil Spector's label. Spector, known for his "Wall Of Sound" technique, did not produce this - Bill Medley did. In a 2007 statement to the Forgotten Hits newsletter, Medley said: "You have to remember that I was producing our stuff before Phil Spector... I mean I produced 'Little Latin Lupe Lu,' 'My Babe' and all that stuff. Then when we went with Phil, Phil asked me if I would produce the albums because it was too time consuming for him to produce the entire albums. So he was going to do the singles and I would do the album. And so that's how that happened and that's how I produced 'Unchained Melody,' which Phil Spector apparently now takes credit for. He can have the credit. And I'm not a producer. I know how to produce. But it's obviously not a Spector production. 'Unchained Melody' was never intended to be the single... it was produced to be on the album. It was put on the B side of a Phil Spector single 'Hung On You' and the minute it was released 'Unchained Melody' just went through the roof."
Hatfield’s rendition of “Unchained Melody” although not the original, is the ‘gold standard’.

(I haven't read all of the comments so I might be repeating some things.)
This was the Andy Williams show; he was a singer with a decades long career.
It was October 25, 1965, not September, February or any other month that folks have guessed at.
Bobby was ill. He also had major stage fright. It was intensified because his parents were in the audience for the first time for a professional performance. With all of that, he more than pulled it off.
Bobby liked the acoustics in the theater and worked with the orchestra's conductor and arranger to create this rendition.
He ended here sharp of G5. The opera singer Plácido Domingo apparently has watched this video and gave Bobby an A+, and said at the "climbing the ladder" at the end, he heard angels. Love that.
The song is from the 1955 movie Unchained. It's set in a prison, but the lyricist, Hy Zaret, refused to put anything about prison in it. Therefore, anyone separated from a loved one can relate to it. Bobby's version is loved by many who served in Vietnam.
Unchained Melody was nominated for an Oscar; however, it didn't win.
Bobby and the composer, Alex North, met years later (there's a photo of them floating around). Mr. North loved the changes Bobby made to his score.
    Bobby is just outstanding.

This was done with pure talent before a live audience. One take, no editing. Bobby Hatfield did this song as a solo. The duo consisted of Bill Medley ( the skinny one ) and Bobby Hatfield. The song was first performed in 1955 in the movie "Unchained". Through the years more than 250 artist have tried to duplicate and match Bobby Hatfield's performance, including Elvis Presley.
I was a junior in high when this song came out in 1965.

Andy Williams -- the dude in the middle -- also had a tremendous set of pipes on him. During this episode of his show, he sung a song with the "Brothers" called (I think), "That's What I'd Say!" He was normally known as a crooner, but he really belted it out on that one.

The Andy Williams Show had to meet that world-famous singer's musical requirements; here the studio orchestra and sound engineers met what Andy demanded. Helped Bobby Hatfield (half the Righteous Brothers act) deliver one of, if not THE, best broadcast musical performances EVER. This video proves IT DOESN'T TAKE A LARGE MICROPHONE TO RECORD A MASTERPIECE. Original song written in 1955 for a prison movie titled "Unchained." As the movie's main musical highlight, the untitled original composition got the title "Unchained Melody." Used years later in another movie, "Ghost" (Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, Whoopi Goldberg).

In 1965, I was turning 15. From the time I was just tiny, I had listened to our transatlantic radio every day, every day, every day, for new music to sing. We lived in Old Valdez, Alaska (which never got TV until 1978...shortly after my mom, my first four kids, and I moved to California). I sang with this song EVERY SINGLE TIME I possibly could. I still do! So thank you VERY much, for giving me something to sing with tonight! 😀
I'm sure others have already mentioned it, but the host was Andy Williams...ALSO one of my VERY favorite singers of all times! I had my own band, back in the 60s, and though we mainly did folk songs (think Bob Dylan and the like), we also loved pop, and Andy's music was ALWAYS good to sing...the same with Nat King Cole.
If you'd like to see a really fun video featuring Andy Williams as a guest on a very fun show, check out:
Ray Stevens - "Along Came Jones" (Live on Andy Williams Show, 1969)
    It's HILARIOUS!
On the other hand, here's a really good sampling of a song that Andy is probably known for, the most:
Andy Williams - Moon River (Year 1961)
Thanks again, for a really great reaction.

Hatfield was an amazing singer...and pretty much self-taught. He sang in church and school choirs and took a couple of music classes in high school, but he learned to sing listening to the radio, as did his partner, Bill. Bill is a bass-baritone and together their sound was totally unique. The Righteous Brothers' ballads 'You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling' and 'Soul and 'inspiration' were Billboard #1s for weeks and they had three albums in the top twenty simultaneously... something no other singers had done. Their first three years together they sang hard rock and roll.

    1. NO one has ever commented on Bobby`s failed attempt at humor during the interview.
He said "someone in the audience yelled "that`s righteous brother so we were called the Harrisons".
    2. Few people mention that this great hit was put on the backside of the record with a song expected to be more popular on the A side. This song was not expected to go far.... I find that interesting.
