Back in the 60s and 70s many 14,15, & 16-year-olds spent hours a week learning an instrument and forming schoolboy bands. These days they're playing video games and checking their phones every ten minutes.

The “Rising Sun” was a slang way of saying from the Far East, back in the 1700s-1800s when the origins of this song were written. A “house of the rising Sun” was slang for an opium den, which were very prevalent in England in those days. I’m a long time metal musician - but the Animals have always been my favorite band. Most of their songs sound much harder!
@@nedludd7622 It is referring to all of the above. Brothel, opium den, prostitute, poor boy, etc. The lyrics changed over the centuries depending on who was singing it. It’s original meaning of the place, and the house changed as the lyrics were changed over several centuries. This song goes far back.
The grinning guitarist was watching them move the organ while it was being played. Eric Burdon ... sounding like he's in his 50's, looking 18, actually in his early 20's. Check him out with War, "Spill the Wine".
Eric Burdon was 23 when this was recorded, 24 in this film which is called Pop Gear and features a lot of bands of this time. They are lipsynching to the single, which at over 4 minutes long was one of the longest singles ever released. It was frequently cut down to 3 minutes for airplay. Recorded in about 20 minutes because that's all the studio time they could afford. It's also is considerred the first folk rock recording. Regarding the drummer, John Steel, yes, he has a jazz background. No one ever notices him. Watch the video of Don't let me understood from the Ed Sullivan show. His drumming is amazing. Chas Chandler, the bassist, discovered Jimi Hendrix in NYand took him to London. Ages ranged from about 22 (Hilton Valentine the guitarist) to 26 (Chas Chandler.) The Animals were extremely influential but no one's heard of them.
I noticed for the first time that the organ was moved. Early in the video it was right next to the drums, but it was way up front at the end of the video.

What a surprise to hear Eric Burton's voice, 'eh? One of my favorite bands of the 60s. We were always told The House of the Rising Sun was a prison in New Orleans. He's going back to wear that 'ball and chain'. The guy smiling was laughing at them moving the organ in front without the cameras seeing it. One take to do this.
I thought the smile of the Guitarist was in regards to the slow/serious walk around 8:38 & under all those strange wooden stage props. They all had no trouble with their lengthy slow walk… until the last Chorus, the Guitarist was forced at the last second to swing his guitar upward to avoid hitting the upright stage prop, followed by the taller Bassist had to suddenly Duck his head to avoid his forehead banging into the overhead crossbar! Meanwhile Lead Singer had no clumsy issues at all - being short & not carrying/playing a musical instrument.

Many people have commented below that this is quite an old song - thought to have been written about 1900. There have been over 300 covers of this song, but my second favourite (after The Animals version) is the 1996 version by Bachman Turner Overdrive which is such a powerful rock version. I feel that it is now up to Dan Vasc to move from that into making a metal version of it. That would be amazing!
The original folk song refered to a young woman returning to a house of prostitution. 'The House of the Rising Sun' actually existed in the late 1800s New Orleans. I 1st heard this version when I was 2o in '64, after learning all the lyrics of original. Lots more verses! 🌺😻🐾
The story goes that they needed another song for their UK tour as support for Jimi Hendrix. They found the tune and put it together in an hour or so. They then recorded it in one take.

I was once our church drummer. Our keyboardist and lead guitarist decided to put “Amazing Grace” to this music. They asked me if I knew the song, I said absolutely. Pastor liked it, congregation liked it.

they were part of the original british invasion along with the rolling stones and the beatles. i was 12 in '64 when this song hit the airwaves and it instantly knocked me over. i always preferred the animals and the stones over the beatles because they just had a grittier bluesy sound - not so much pop - and as you could tell from this song they were not singing about holding somebody's hand. it's about a house of blue lights so to speak and the downfall of many who visited it. we saw vocalist eric burdon about 10 years ago in our berkshire hills town of great barrington , mass. at a converted old movie theater - the mahaiwe - he was with his band the NEW ANIMALS. he sounded the same at around 70 at the time but looked nothing like his young self. they were great

I think pretty much everyone has explained to you what the house of the rising sun was. From what I've seen when the singer and the other members slow walk around they are mimicking a New Orleans funeral. No auto tune or gimmicks. Just amazing music. the band initially had a difficult time getting this on North American radio because of the locked-in 2 or 3 minute format that existed. It was one of the very first few to break through that because the song just could not be denied. I was 16 when it came out, and it still gives me goose bumps. Eric Burdon had a bad case of the blues, and that organ player is surreal. The original, due to lack of funds, was a single take on one microphone.
The music back in the 60's and 70's was better in my opinion because with the coming of the electric guitar, the Hammond B-3 organ, and the great analog sound of fender amps, and the fact without all the digital and computerized advancements, the musicians had to be talented the singers had to have great voices, many had classical musical backgrounds from growing up in the 1950's and 60's that parents had their kids taking lessons. Schools had more music programs and the times being tumultuous brought out great lyrics, and the main outlet was the radio and to get radio play time the songs had to be good. I was born in the '50's now in my late 60's and I have to say the 60's and 70's were a great time to have grown up especially the music.
23...he was born in 1941--eight years before I was (at least, if this recording WAS made in 1964). That's when they first sang the song and released the first recording of it. I think this right about that time.
I was so lucky to have an older sister (by 6 years) who'd have a radio on in the house when Mom and Pop were at work, especially in the summertime when sis had to watch me and an even younger brother. So, she helped me with late 1950s tunes all the way up to around 1964 when she went off to college. Then there was a lengthy gap, when I lost my connection to pop music; wasn't until September of 1970 when I arrived at college, and ... MAN ALIVE! ... my ears and brain were assailed by so many different styles and bands! I caught the tail end of the British Invasion but right behind that came psychedelic and hard rock bands/music; then a growing group of friends brought in bluegrass, classical, zydeco, klezmer, country-western -- what a wonderful flooding of my brain!!!

Eric Burdon was born in 1941 Johnny Steele to i think, the tall bas player Chas chandler was born in 1939 ,The guitar player was born 1943 and the keyboard player Alan Price was born in 1942 . When I last saw this performance, it was on a black and white TV. Maybe the Red Skeleton Show??🤔 The rumours in my neck of the woods was that "The House of the Rising Sun" was a combo "lady of the night" and opium den. Drugs being the ball and chain and ruin of a poor young boy being the expensive sex. First album I ever bought was best of the Animals, a bit after this as I was 7 when tia came out, but I loved it them. This is an arrangement of a traditional song.
I've loved this song since WAY back...in 1964. That's when I was idolizing the Beatles, as well. I'd go stand in front of our big transatlantic radio, and listen to them playing brand new Beatles songs, back-to-back with The Animals. The Animals also did Bob Dylan stuff, as well, and I think they actually got this one from his version. I heard HIM sing it when he released it in 1962. The song, itself, though, is based on an earlier song from somewhere I can't remember -- it was slightly different, if I'm recalling correctly. My friends and I loved Bob's version, but still preferred the Animals' version. Eric Burdon was 23 at that time, though he and the others looked younger, as you mentioned. Even with the Animals, the Dave Clark Five, Jimi Hendrix, and the Kinks, etc. being SO good (musically), my friends and I all preferred the Beatles over them all. That was a pretty exciting time, musically speaking. It meant a lot to all of us. I just happened to realize, at this moment, that there are only two of our little ensemble, still alive. Wow! Here's a REALLY good WIKI article (just search for this title) "The House of the Rising Sun" (grin...it's true...that's just the title). They've done a really great history of the song, from its origins (as much, I think, as possibly could be found). Here's a fun thing. After I had married, had four children, and was on my own after my divorce, Mom and I and all my kids moved to California. For a while, we lived up in the Sierras, north of Bakersfield, in the very small mountain town of Pine Flat, just above California Hot Springs, and way up the winding mountain road from Porterville (where we were two of the four "worship leaders" at the very tiny Pine Flat Chapel (which now has a different name and is larger), and my two older children were attending the tiny Pine Flat elementary/middle school there. Every spring, when school was about over for the summer, we held a community concert on the tiny stage there at the school. The last year I lived there, one of Jen's (my oldest daughter's) friends' dad and I (we both played guitar and several other instruments) sang two songs that were actually three songs. One was (and I still love it), "Morning Has Broken." We led straight from that, into "House of the Rising Sun." (You know...if morning has broken, the sun must be rising, right? Grin.) THEN, we didn't stop at the end of "House," but went directly into "Amazing Grace," using that tune. You may have heard that done, before. When you look it up, you can't see (as far as I've looked) that it was used that way BEFORE the early 2000s, but that's incorrect. The year that we sang it that way (and it had been on the radio a LOT for like two years by then), was 1982, when my oldest daughter was only 14. By then, people were also singing, "O Little Town of Bethlehem" to the same tune...it fits wonderfully. A lot of people used to get upset about that (kind of like people who at first got pretty upset about Dan Vasc's version of "O Holy Night," and how he "desecrated" that "sacred song," which, of course, he did NOT...even if there had BEEN such a thing as a "sacred song," which there is NOT. If anyone is actually WORSHIPING a SONG, they are worshiping the wrong thing. Anyway...down from my soapbox. My friend and I didn't think it at ALL sacrilegious to meld the TUNE of "House..." with the WORDS of "Amazing Grace." After all -- it's not the TUNE that means anything in the first place -- it's the words, and if we choose to put Godly words to what has previously only been sung as an ungodly song, then so much the better. In this particular case, though, "House of the Rising Sun" is actually a great WARNING song, about keeping your life away from the pull of the flesh, so why not segue right into the fact that it's only the grace of God that will help you TO stay away from there. Not only that, but Holy Spirit can minister to anyone, anywhere. Why would He stop from walking into such a "house of ill repute?" That's exactly where He DOES go, with all the love of God overflowing from Him (rivers of living water). 😀 Thank you VERY much for reacting to this song. Actually Eric Burdon originally played in jazz club circuits before he became famous that’s why you hear a little jazz influence in the instrumentation
@@setonhillstudios Alan Price on the organ did the arrangement and it caused a big bust up with the group because he kept a large part of the royalties when the rest of them were under the impression it was going to be an equal split. Alan Price left the group in 1965 and set up his own group, The Alan Price Set. He had a few hits of his own, most notably, Simon Smith & The Amazing Dancing Bear, that was written by Randy Newman, Rosetta and The Jarrow Song.

This is an old cautionary song originally sung by a woman. Eric said in an interview many decades later that he changed it to a man singing since he was doing the song about living in a bordello/gambling house.
That’s funny that you noticed the drummer, I can’t hear anything but the organist. He dominates that part of the song so much that everything else just fades away for me. This is an old folk song, like 100 years old or more, no one knows who wrote it, and there’s been many recordings of it over the years. My favorite (other than this one) is by Joan Baez. She has a feminine take on the song with different verses, that make it very interesting. The House of the Rising Sun is a bordello or opium den, something like that. So the man in the song is saying that he had a bad up bringing & found himself in trouble. Now he’s boarding the train to go back to prison down in New Orleans. Ball and chain is what men used to wear when they were out of prison doing hard labor, digging ditches or building roads so they couldn’t run away (I recommend watching Cool Hand Luke for a taste of that life). Sorry if you know all this already, I’ve seen other younger reactors not have a clue. 👍😄

Great comments and song. I was senior in high school in '64. In the early '80's, I had a Country band and this one was in our rotation and popular with the crowds.
I was graduating 8th grade in 1964 (the year of the big Alaska earthquake. I, too had a band, but throughout the 60s...a little folk band, but we did country, as well. It really didn't matter. We loved the harmonies of just about everything back then. I remember Vicki, Fran, and I (the ones who initiated the band, but over the years, we had some additions), had a slumber party one night at Vicki's house. She had a Pat Boone LP, which featured one of his best-ever songs (in my opinion), "Love Letters in the Sand." We stayed up that night, singing it until we had it down pat. We always had good reviews when we did that one in public.
In 1964, I was 5 years old and in kindergarten. Every afternoon at 3pm, me, my Mother and older sister would watch American Bandstand, hosted by Dick Clark.
America wrote the rules to popular music up until about 1963, then the British wrote the next set of rules in the next 20 years. From the Beatles thru Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols and Gary Numan. ... and so on. America got stuck with Country Rock like the Eagles and Bob Dylan. Black Sabbath and the Beatles were recording at the same time in 1968/69. Imagine how fast music was changing from 1968 to 1978. Just 10 years took us from the Beatles to Punk and Electronica.

I know you’ll love this song even though I haven’t heard you watch this song yet, but I know you were like before the rising Sun, and I mentioned another group in another comment I made today that might come close to topping the Beatles in my book though that will be hard. But they are The Eagles & the song that I love and I’d love you to listen to, react if you can get it through is “Take it to the Limit” I think I told you the group in the other comment on Simon & G, the Line up the eagles have then were Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Randy Meisner, and Don Felder. Frey and Henley started the group with Meisner and another guy that was more country who quit. They are known for being fracturous together, but great music. I guarantee you know lots of their songs. Meisner quit not long after this concert because he was very shy and this was the only song he sang in the spotlight. He did great this night, but one night he didn’t think he could hit that high note at the end, and Glenn Frey bullied him to do it at the encore, and actually got in a fistfight with Randy and Randy quit. Glenn Frey sang it after that, but nobody did it as good as Randy. However, they do have Vince Gill now in the group (And you have to know how good he is!) since Glenn Frey died. I’ve seen the group 3 times and they sing all the hits, Joe Walsh is hilarious, as well as a good player and singer, and I highly recommend seeing them if they come around where you can. please enjoy and let me know if you listen. 🥰😘 i’d like to know described everything I’ve seen also subscribed. I know someone else already explained to you about the opium dens in the UK at the time. Opium, just in case you don't know, comes from the poppy flower. I don't think it's likely anymore because of the advances in testing, but there was a time in which you had to be careful about eating poppy seeds, like on a bagel, because of the fact that a drug test would confuse your having eaten the seeds with you smoking or eating opium. It was a popular way to ingest opium, if you didn't want to smoke it. by having it cooked in various kinds of Asian dumplings, for example.
great reaction... although before my time, "house of the rising sun" is one of my all time favorites. the vocals and band are superb and the styling, colors, etc of the video represent that time period so well and remind me of the culture that followed from bob dylan, the carpenters to tv shows like the partridge family, brady bunch, etc. haley reinhart also does an amazing cover of this song capturing all the deep soul of original while reinterpreting in very different slowed down bluesy jazz way... similar to what she did with “creep” w/pmj. it considered one of the best performances ever on american idol (search paul fromMN trueHD for best quality)… it is stunning! 😎
Micky Most their manager didn't think it would be a hit that's why he only booked a half hour slot at the studio to set up and record the song in one take.
The other problem is that the music medias including radio are owned by only a few corporations, which decide what we get to listen to. Back then, most of it was independent.
What was in the water... I am 55, in my humble opinion it was a combination of turmoil in the world and an emergence of new styles and a merging of different styles.

The “Rising Sun” was a slang way of saying from the Far East, back in the 1700s-1800s when the origins of this song were written. A “house of the rising Sun” was slang for an opium den, which were very prevalent in England in those days.
I’m a long time metal musician - but the Animals have always been my favorite band. Most of their songs sound much harder!

@@nedludd7622 It is referring to all of the above. Brothel, opium den, prostitute, poor boy, etc. The lyrics changed over the centuries depending on who was singing it. It’s original meaning of the place, and the house changed as the lyrics were changed over several centuries. This song goes far back.
I believe the land of the rising sun is Japan. In the kanji, the symbol for sun and Japan are the same.
The grinning guitarist was watching them move the organ while it was being played. Eric Burdon ... sounding like he's in his 50's, looking 18, actually in his early 20's.

Eric Burdon was 23 when this was recorded, 24 in this film which is called Pop Gear and features a lot of bands of this time. They are lipsynching to the single, which at over 4 minutes long was one of the longest singles ever released. It was frequently cut down to 3 minutes for airplay. Recorded in about 20 minutes because that's all the studio time they could afford. It's also is considerred the first folk rock recording. Regarding the drummer, John Steel, yes, he has a jazz background. No one ever notices him. Watch the video of Don't let me understood from the Ed Sullivan show. His drumming is amazing. Chas Chandler, the bassist, discovered Jimi Hendrix in NYand took him to London. Ages ranged from about 22 (Hilton Valentine the guitarist) to 26 (Chas Chandler.) The Animals were extremely influential but no one's heard of them.

I noticed for the first time that the organ was moved. Early in the video it was right next to the drums, but it was way up front at the end of the video.
I know right! So cool they did that in one take which alot of people informed me on here! Some other viewers said that’s why the second guy in line was laughing because they were moving the organ off camera 🤣
What a surprise to hear Eric Burton's voice, 'eh? One of my favorite bands of the 60s. We were always told The House of the Rising Sun was a prison in New Orleans. He's going back to wear that 'ball and chain'. The guy smiling was laughing at them moving the organ in front without the cameras seeing it. One take to do this.

I thought the smile of the Guitarist was in regards to the slow/serious walk around 8:38 & under all those strange wooden stage props. They all had no trouble with their lengthy slow walk… until the last Chorus, the Guitarist was forced at the last second to swing his guitar upward to avoid hitting the upright stage prop, followed by the taller Bassist had to suddenly Duck his head to avoid his forehead banging into the overhead crossbar! Meanwhile Lead Singer had no clumsy issues at all - being short & not carrying/playing a musical instrument.
I grew up with the Late '50s, '60s and Early '70s music, Graduated High School in '67. I got to see the Animals in January '71 at a small Ag & Tech College in Upstate NY. I grew up with all this music, Graduated High School in '67

Many people have commented below that this is quite an old song - thought to have been written about 1900. There have been over 300 covers of this song, but my second favourite (after The Animals version) is the 1996 version by Bachman Turner Overdrive which is such a powerful rock version.
I feel that it is now up to Dan Vasc to move from that into making a metal version of it. That would be amazing!

The original folk song refered to a young woman returning to a house of prostitution. 'The House of the Rising Sun' actually existed in the late 1800s New Orleans. I 1st heard this version when I was 2o in '64, after learning all the lyrics of original. Lots more verses! 🌺😻🐾

The story goes that they needed another song for their UK tour as support for Jimi Hendrix. They found the tune and put it together in an hour or so. They then recorded it in one take.
That is codswallop. The song was recorded years before Jimi was discovered. They were supporting Chuck Berry.

they were part of the original british invasion along with the rolling stones and the beatles. i was 12 in '64 when this song hit the airwaves and it instantly knocked me over. i always preferred the animals and the stones over the beatles because they just had a grittier bluesy sound - not so much pop - and as you could tell from this song they were not singing about holding somebody's hand. it's about a house of blue lights so to speak and the downfall of many who visited it. we saw vocalist eric burdon about 10 years ago in our berkshire hills town of great barrington , mass. at a converted old movie theater - the mahaiwe - he was with his band the NEW ANIMALS. he sounded the same at around 70 at the time but looked nothing like his young self. they were great

From what I've seen when the singer and the other members slow walk around they are mimicking a New Orleans funeral. No auto tune or gimmicks. Just amazing music. the band initially had a difficult time getting this on North American radio because of the locked-in 2 or 3 minute format that existed. It was one of the very first few to break through that because the song just could not be denied. I was 16 when it came out, and it still gives me goose bumps. Eric Burdon had a bad case of the blues, and that organ player is surreal. The original, due to lack of funds, was a single take on one microphone.

The music back in the 60's and 70's was better in my opinion because with the coming of the electric guitar, the Hammond B-3 organ, and the great analog sound of fender amps, and the fact without all the digital and computerized advancements, the musicians had to be talented the singers had to have great voices, many had classical musical backgrounds from growing up in the 1950's and 60's that parents had their kids taking lessons. Schools had more music programs and the times being tumultuous brought out great lyrics, and the main outlet was the radio and to get radio play time the songs had to be good. I was born in the '50's now in my late 60's and I have to say the 60's and 70's were a great time to have grown up especially the music.

23...he was born in 1941--eight years before I was (at least, if this recording WAS made in 1964). That's when they first sang the song and released the first recording of it. I think this right about that time.

I was so lucky to have an older sister (by 6 years) who'd have a radio on in the house when Mom and Pop were at work, especially in the summertime when sis had to watch me and an even younger brother. So, she helped me with late 1950s tunes all the way up to around 1964 when she went off to college. Then there was a lengthy gap, when I lost my connection to pop music; wasn't until September of 1970 when I arrived at college, and ... MAN ALIVE! ... my ears and brain were assailed by so many different styles and bands! I caught the tail end of the British Invasion but right behind that came psychedelic and hard rock bands/music; then a growing group of friends brought in bluegrass, classical, zydeco, klezmer, country-western -- what a wonderful flooding of my brain!!!

Love this song so much and The Animals original line up is my favorit group of all great groups from the 60,s , the drummer Johnny Steele playd jazz in the 50,s and Eric Burdon sung jazz the keyboard player i thik also playd jazz. Eric Burdon was born in 1941 Johnny Steele to i think, the tall bas player Chas chandler was born in 1939 ,The guitar player was born 1943 and the keyboard player Alan Price was born in 1942 . Try Gin House Blues, Going Down Slow, they was so great .

The Animals, Creedence Clearwater Revival ( CCR ), warm beer, a double rolled fat boy, and letters from home. This is what kept me going for 11 months and 4 days in 1967-68.. Then shrapnel took off my right ear and two fingers. By the Animals was...We gotta get out of this place, Heard it, sang it, played on guitar, lived it...99% of me came home..

I've loved this song since WAY back...in 1964. That's when I was idolizing the Beatles, as well. I'd go stand in front of our big transatlantic radio, and listen to them playing brand new Beatles songs, back-to-back with The Animals. The Animals also did Bob Dylan stuff, as well, and I think they actually got this one from his version. I heard HIM sing it when he released it in 1962. The song, itself, though, is based on an earlier song from somewhere I can't remember -- it was slightly different, if I'm recalling correctly. My friends and I loved Bob's version, but still preferred the Animals' version. Eric Burdon was 23 at that time, though he and the others looked younger, as you mentioned. Even with the Animals, the Dave Clark Five, Jimi Hendrix, and the Kinks, etc. being SO good (musically), my friends and I all preferred the Beatles over them all. That was a pretty exciting time, musically speaking. It meant a lot to all of us. I just happened to realize, at this moment, that there are only two of our little ensemble, still alive. Wow!
Here's a REALLY good WIKI article (just search for this title) "The House of the Rising Sun" (grin...it's true...that's just the title). They've done a really great history of the song, from its origins (as much, I think, as possibly could be found).
Here's a fun thing. After I had married, had four children, and was on my own after my divorce, Mom and I and all my kids moved to California. For a while, we lived up in the Sierras, north of Bakersfield, in the very small mountain town of Pine Flat, just above California Hot Springs, and way up the winding mountain road from Porterville (where we were two of the four "worship leaders" at the very tiny Pine Flat Chapel (which now has a different name and is larger), and my two older children were attending the tiny Pine Flat elementary/middle school there. Every spring, when school was about over for the summer, we held a community concert on the tiny stage there at the school.
The last year I lived there, one of Jen's (my oldest daughter's) friends' dad and I (we both played guitar and several other instruments) sang two songs that were actually three songs. One was (and I still love it), "Morning Has Broken." We led straight from that, into "House of the Rising Sun." (You know...if morning has broken, the sun must be rising, right? Grin.) THEN, we didn't stop at the end of "House," but went directly into "Amazing Grace," using that tune. You may have heard that done, before. When you look it up, you can't see (as far as I've looked) that it was used that way BEFORE the early 2000s, but that's incorrect. The year that we sang it that way (and it had been on the radio a LOT for like two years by then), was 1982, when my oldest daughter was only 14.
By then, people were also singing, "O Little Town of Bethlehem" to the same tune...it fits wonderfully.
A lot of people used to get upset about that (kind of like people who at first got pretty upset about Dan Vasc's version of "O Holy Night," and how he "desecrated" that "sacred song," which, of course, he did NOT...even if there had BEEN such a thing as a "sacred song," which there is NOT. If anyone is actually WORSHIPING a SONG, they are worshiping the wrong thing.
Anyway...down from my soapbox. My friend and I didn't think it at ALL sacrilegious to meld the TUNE of "House..." with the WORDS of "Amazing Grace." After all -- it's not the TUNE that means anything in the first place -- it's the words, and if we choose to put Godly words to what has previously only been sung as an ungodly song, then so much the better. In this particular case, though, "House of the Rising Sun" is actually a great WARNING song, about keeping your life away from the pull of the flesh, so why not segue right into the fact that it's only the grace of God that will help you TO stay away from there. Not only that, but Holy Spirit can minister to anyone, anywhere. Why would He stop from walking into such a "house of ill repute?" That's exactly where He DOES go, with all the love of God overflowing from Him (rivers of living water). 😀

@@setonhillstudios Alan Price on the organ did the arrangement and it caused a big bust up with the group because he kept a large part of the royalties when the rest of them were under the impression it was going to be an equal split. Alan Price left the group in 1965 and set up his own group, The Alan Price Set. He had a few hits of his own, most notably, Simon Smith & The Amazing Dancing Bear, that was written by Randy Newman, Rosetta and The Jarrow Song.

This is an old cautionary song originally sung by a woman. Eric said in an interview many decades later that he changed it to a man singing since he was doing the song about living in a bordello/gambling house.

That’s funny that you noticed the drummer, I can’t hear anything but the organist. He dominates that part of the song so much that everything else just fades away for me.

She has a feminine take on the song with different verses, that make it very interesting. The House of the Rising Sun is a bordello or opium den, something like that. So the man in the song is saying that he had a bad up bringing & found himself in trouble. Now he’s boarding the train to go back to prison down in New Orleans. Ball and chain is what men used to wear when they were out of prison doing hard labor, digging ditches or building roads so they couldn’t run away (I recommend watching Cool Hand Luke for a taste of that life). Sorry if you know all this already, I’ve seen other younger reactors not have a clue. 👍😄

I was graduating 8th grade in 1964 (the year of the big Alaska earthquake. I, too had a band, but throughout the 60s...a little folk band, but we did country, as well. It really didn't matter. We loved the harmonies of just about everything back then. I remember Vicki, Fran, and I (the ones who initiated the band, but over the years, we had some additions), had a slumber party one night at Vicki's house. She had a Pat Boone LP, which featured one of his best-ever songs (in my opinion), "Love Letters in the Sand." We stayed up that night, singing it until we had it down pat. We always had good reviews when we did that one in public.

America wrote the rules to popular music up until about 1963, then the British wrote the next set of rules in the next 20 years. From the Beatles thru Rolling Stones, Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Sex Pistols and Gary Numan. ... and so on. America got stuck with Country Rock like the Eagles and Bob Dylan. Black Sabbath and the Beatles were recording at the same time in 1968/69.
Imagine how fast music was changing from 1968 to 1978. Just 10 years took us from the Beatles to Punk and Electronica.

But they are The Eagles & the song that I love and I’d love you to listen to, react if you can get it through is “Take it to the Limit” I think I told you the group in the other comment on Simon & G, the Line up the eagles have then were Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, Randy Meisner, and Don Felder. Frey and Henley started the group with Meisner and another guy that was more country who quit. They are known for being fracturous together, but great music. I guarantee you know lots of their songs. Meisner quit not long after this concert because he was very shy and this was the only song he sang in the spotlight. He did great this night, but one night he didn’t think he could hit that high note at the end, and Glenn Frey bullied him to do it at the encore, and actually got in a fistfight with Randy and Randy quit. Glenn Frey sang it after that, but nobody did it as good as Randy. However, they do have Vince Gill now in the group (And you have to know how good he is!) since Glenn Frey died. I’ve seen the group 3 times and they sing all the hits, Joe Walsh is hilarious, as well as a good player and singer, and I highly recommend seeing them if they come around where you can. please enjoy and let me know if you listen. 🥰😘 i’d like to know described everything I’ve seen also subscribed. I know someone else already explained to you about the opium dens in the UK at the time. Opium, just in case you don't know, comes from the poppy flower. I don't think it's likely anymore because of the advances in testing, but there was a time in which you had to be careful about eating poppy seeds, like on a bagel, because of the fact that a drug test would confuse your having eaten the seeds with you smoking or eating opium. It was a popular way to ingest opium, if you didn't want to smoke it. by having it cooked in various kinds of Asian dumplings, for example.

great reaction... although before my time, "house of the rising sun" is one of my all time favorites. the vocals and band are superb and the styling, colors, etc of the video represent that time period so well and remind me of the culture that followed from bob dylan, the carpenters to tv shows like the partridge family, brady bunch, etc. haley reinhart also does an amazing cover of this song capturing all the deep soul of original while reinterpreting in very different slowed down bluesy jazz way... similar to what she did with “creep” w/pmj. it considered one of the best performances ever on american idol (search paul fromMN trueHD for best quality)… it is stunning! 😎
