I live in Sweden, by the coast. And when i was a kid in the 80s, i was standing in the window looking out over the sea. And i saw this dot over the horizon that kept getting bigger and bigger. Then it just expanded in to a Viggen at absurdly low altitude that flew right over my house. I could see every detail under it and the noise was deafening. It felt like the whole house was shaking. This was one of the best moments in my childhood.

Training was way more extreme with lower altitudes and more planes involved, and there was a lot more accidents, with a bit over 600 casualties from the conception of the swedish air force up to the 90s. Different times. I do remember some supersonic flights, but they were over the sea. But it was the low level flights that were the most memorable.

It was at treetop level, and HUGE.. scared the bejesus out of me as it literally came out of nowhere and then was gone...

However, on my second day, this one dude in my platoon went to poop in the woods. Shortly after he left we heard the the noise of APC's and our dude came running for his life with his pants half down, toilet paper flying in the wind, frantically screaming "THE TANKS ARE COMING" as the APC's slowly rolled by him. The roofs were open on the APC's and amused soldiers was looking down on him and cheering him on as he was running for his life. Another golden memory from the Swedish military.

Good video and great flying! I flew the viggen in the Swedish airforce and it was an awesome plane for it‘s time. Impressive acceleration with 3s or less for every 100km/h speed increase. Initial turn rate is fine but no chance on a continued fight against a gripen. If you stay low altitude and below 15 aoa you should not have a problem with the engine.
i can't help but notice a similarity of dogfighting and chess. Mostly baits and thinking ahead, as well as energy management, which i see as analogy to holding the center of a chess board. That move you showed in Tacview really highlighted that for me. Interesting stuff!
@@Asghaad An JA-37D with those and a glass cockpit would rock the most, but is much probably less likely to be made than an older JA-37 version with steam gauges and no AMRAAMs. I'd take any, though :)

I remember during the cold war, when the airforce had a night exercise above Stockholm ( somewhere in the early - mid 80's ). Imagine waking up in the middle of the night because Viggens where scrambled and flew right above your apartment. It scared the hell out of my poor mother :D
While the AJ37 was a dedicated strike fighter. The design was good enough to develop a dedicated fighter version. They also considered a redesign Draken for that task.
Both Viggen and Gripen are multi-role. Viggen was feared by our neighbours because if its short scramble and excellent interception capabilities. Gripen does all that too but is smaller and more agile and also quite sneeky :)
I really wished they made a JA(C or later) or AJS variants for DCS, later in life the thing carried AMRAAMS and with an instantaneous turn of around 25 degrees* a second, all with an improved RM8B engine would be fantastic.
@@tr6431 "totally different" is bit of the stretch, JA is the same airframe with minor modifications, slightly better engine and radar. its like calling F-4C and F-4E "totally different aircraft". its still a Viggen, its aerodynamics are neraly identical, its flight characteristics are slightly better due to the better engine and it has better provisions for guns. frankly the largest difference between JA and AJ is the radar lastly you missed the point, the OP asked for "AJS variant" which is the variant in DCS being flown here, also made a mistake because only JA-37 had the improved engine and the only variant capable of carrying AMRAAMs was the JA-37D

It has a longer airframe, different engine, different avionics, different radar, different rudder on the wings, different weapons capabillities, it has a fixed radar guided cannon mounted under the fuselage, more defence systems, more hardpoints etc...

You should realy bind the restart button to your HOTAS, that makes it slightly more reliable to get it started. I think the button is marked "återstart" in the cockpit.
There was an incident where a sr-71 had an engine failure over Russia, it was still able to fly but it was slow. Sweden came to the rescue with a flight of the viggins, the Soviet pilots were scared spittles of the viggin and boogied out of swedish airspace. It likes to go really fast.
I think Sven was having a chat with the union there, in the third round... something about not being ejected from the aircraft in the first round, when GS bailed....? =)
The Swedish Attack/fighters have generally always been first deployed as Primary Attack aircraft and secondarily Fighter aircraft. (probobly more intercept, but that word don´t exist in Swedish) then developed into other platforms, like a primary fighter. Specially so true for Viggen and Lansen. While lansen was in dedicated Attack, fighter and and surveillance, the attack and fighter for Viggen is both dual role. (The Draken Attack aircraft was never deployed in Sweden due to Lansen already existing). Anyway, the original AJ37 was used as target practising for the J35 Draken. Vitnes from the pilots implies that they where more evenly matched than they suppose to. When the JA37 was introduced the J35 was toast. The Development of aircraft in Sweden at this point was so hard core that the Viggen first flight was prior to the Draken being introduced. Its also worth saying that JAS39 gripen have been the main fighter in service for almost 30 years and first flight 35 years ago, and still the main fighter. Going back 35 years from 1986 we are in 1951, the year the first jet fighter was introduced. Granted, the JAS 39EF have very few components in common with the ABCD versions.... The JAS 39B actually retroactively renamed B, from previously being named SK39, meaning training aircraft.
Just a suggestion. Pit a Russian Mig 15 against a Corsair F4U-4b. It seems if both have better than average, aggressive pilots this could be interesting, what with the Corsair having 4 20M cannons and a turning radius made to frustrate an early jet jockey.
GS getting bored with beating the ever-living crap out of everybody in basically any fight... goes: "Huh... how can I make this more interesting for myself? Oh! I know! Let's do one where the engine cuts out intermittently!"
If you don't know how to keep a consistent speed, how is your opponent supposed to reliably shoot with lead? I think your secret weapon is the compressor stall 😆

During the pre-mission briefing, someone told Sven that this was to be a Fox2 fight, so he worked to keep the exhaust signature down.
