The original was bombastic and overpowering. This is more like a lullaby. Instead of the opportunistic predator in the series, it's a beautiful and motherly figure. One who at first is ominous and cold, but becomes warm and comforting as Greg and Wirt accept their deaths and move on, being led by the hand of the pale woman into the beyond.

This song is really clever with the way it romanticizes surrendering and becoming an edelwood tree only for the vocals to end with fire. As in that's it, that's the end of you if you choose this path. And it gives you this feeling of disorientation just like when someone is gone and you haven't quite gotten used to them not being there.

I don't really know why, but this cover made me think of Peter Pan. In the book, it's said that Peter goes halfway to the afterlife with kids so they won't be scared. The singer does this, in a way.

So
I've come up with an interesting theory on who or what the beast from over the garden wall might be
It's entirely possible from what the show tells us, that the beast in the show isn't the "only" beast nor is he the first
Which leads me to think that judging by the dynamic between the lantern bearer and the beast itself, the beast is not immortal, he will eventually die (at least his corporeal state will) at which point the lantern bearer will become the new beast
What this means is that even though it would seem like the soul of the beast is in the lantern, it might be a bit more complicated, the lantern is actually a vessel for the part of the beast that is truly immortal, and the part that needs to remain intact in order for the mantle to be passed on, it is for this reason that the lantern needs to remain lit, so that upon the death of the current beast, the lantern bearer can take up the mantle and be able to find a new lantern bearer (which it would have plenty of time to do since the beast could have an insanely long lifespan)
Basically, the lantern is like a horcrux for the beast, and without it, the beast would be a fully mortal entity.

Okay I brought up two UA-cam tabs on my computer and I lined up both the original and this cover and it SLAPS. I admit this cover goes a bit faster because sometimes the beast/ghost children drag out the words a bit more but all it takes is a quick double tap from the space bar and it lines up again. Someone please combine the two 😭
I remember first coming across this specific version of this song; I was in my early teens and I was coming up with all sorts of crazy stories. One really good example was this story that was loosely inspired by Amphibia, and one of the main villains I came up with was a female goddess/monster called Lusca (named after the creature from {I think} Caribbean mythology because I loved ancient mythology back then).
Despite the fact that she was answering to someone even higher on the food chain, I still wanted Lusca to be the creepiest villain in the entire story; I wanted her very presence to invoke the sense of dread that you'd experience when you're about to die (specifically in some outdoors situation like a snowstorm or something else), and this cover definitely helped me come up with ways to make her the creepiest thing I ever made, especially because I still don't fully understand what that younger version of me was making. Thanks.
Side note: I'm realizing that that version of me was trying to tackle some heavy subjects back then with this villain (among other ones) and I don't know if I should be scared or impressed by my old self.

Holysh*t your voice freaking phenomenal!!!!! Honestly I never really got into the beasts singing voice. I don't know it's just not to my taste but I do like the original song. Because of how it switches from him singing to the children's choir.....but since he has all those faces on him and he swallowed up so many souls........it's creepy to think that he's still singing as all the children's ghosts inside of him have their voices emanating from him....
But this this is wonderful and going on my playlist. :)

It's really soothing like a lullaby, but reading the lyrics and knowing about the Beast, makes me think of not just a beautiful motherly figure leading me to the afterlife. Rather, a different sort of predator in the same branch as The Beast. Think, The Other Mother from Coraline, who entices you with niceties and promises of wonder but leads you to a fate worse than death. This made me think of this, with the end being where the poor child is snatched and then used to feed the fire.
What really did the beast in is that he got cocky after all those years and so many trees he’s created from poor innocent souls he started to think it was easy and so he stopped putting on a façade of being a kindly tree Dad and started being more boisterous and more obviously predatory
I mean what would you rather follow to your dead the voice of a kind tree Dad or the voice of something that is clearly indicating that one it doesn’t have your best interest at heart and two it doesn’t care that you think it doesn’t have your best interest at heart you’re in the middle of the woods what are you going to do one deeper into the woods those are his domains you’re not going to escape it so just sit down and turn into a tree

Rang throughout the forest, guiding hopeless and weary travelers to their rest
Hearing such a sweet, sweet motherly voice comforted them, it made their wills falter and soften, it made death sound much less terrifying and more like a small nap on a spring afternoon. The voice belonged to the Angel of The Wood, a siren of the forest, one that few have been blessed to hear. She was the yin of the yang, the lighter half of the Beast. One cannot exist it out the other, without light there would be no darkness, and without darkness, there would be no light, just existence. She was seen as an angel that hopeless travelers would see or hear before they die, most of the Unknown saw this as a mercy. To be filled with a dispair and despiration or fallen ill to the sky's harsh north wind can make one near suicidal. But to be taken away from such suffering in a calming and tranquil way, it made death seem like a release from life's cruelties. Since the beginning, there was a cycle. An outsider would enter the Unknown, most likely unsure of how to return home. The outsider would wander through the Unknown, stumbling upon many of the people who lived in the Wood or in town or in houses. If not able to find a way home, the outsider will either decide to just live in the Unknown or continue to try and find a way out, most pick the latter. But as time progresses, the outsider will begin to loose more and more of their will, that is when they will start seeing the Angel and Devil of the Unknown. The Angel will be seen only during the day, gliding gracefully amongst the leaves as if she were floating. The Angel will try and help the outsider, giving them directions to towns or some place with people, but never any specific directions to an exit. Once she had finished her interactions, she will dissipate into mist and brush back behind the trees. When the sun sets, the sky turning dark, The Devil will soon appear. The Devil of the Unknown was almost an exact opposite to The Angel, he offered almost no help to anyone, and mearly watches the outsider walk aimlessly through the dark. The dark being would soon offer a lantern to the outsider as some form of false endearment, already half filled with oil as as start. Some outsiders would say they were grateful or didn't want it at all, but still took it out of spite. As more days go by, the outsiders will becoming more and more difficult to hang onto, the lanterns' oil is beginning to run low and the outsider would soon hear singing in the forest, distant, but still can be heard. It sounded like "Tra la la la~ Chop the wood to light the fire~ Tra la la la~ Tisn't much that I require~" Believe it or not, very few were able to decipher what the lyrics meant, but who did, lets say that they found an axe and made their light last a bit longer. The singing will sound louder at night than day, for The Angel still held hope for outsiders, but in contrast, the Darker Half has much more doubt. If the outsider fails to return home, then their passing was inevitable, the only matter was when. If the outsider was lucky, they would collapse in the middle of the day and just let themselves drift away. That's when they would start hearing the once distant song become louder and clearer. The Angel's voice would always be full of compassion and emotion, both of sadness and happiness, happiness that they had finally stopped in trying to run themselves into the ground and that they stopped now and not after dark. While singing, the Lighter being would focus to the ground surrounding the outsider and carefully winde roots of plants beneath them and wrap them in a comforting blanket, a cacoon of release from life. But if they quit and stop at the dead of night... You know what happens. Rinse repeat. This was their cycle. This way their way of life, their balance on the scales.
That is until The Darker half begun to tip the scales.
He made sure to give directions, incorrect ones. He made sure that he put extra oil in the lantern to make it last longer in the dark. With a few more of these extra efforts, the results were not in vain. Any outsiders or even spare villagers that stayed that long alone the dark... The Brighter half noticed these changes, that the next morning there would be a new tree in the forest, a very twisted ones, ones that have seen horrors unimaginable, much to her dismay. Weeks gone by and this spree hasn't stopped and it was starting to get out of control, that the Darker half was getting greedy and more and more powerful, she knew she could not let this stand any longer. She had to meet her other half at the only time where night and day met. Dawn and Dusk. This is where the fight began.
This fight didn't start as one, no, it was, at first, more of a meeting to discuss business and business only. It started like a casual conversation then soon evolved into business propositions then to a full out argument. Nobody knew what they were talking about or for how long, but a small handful of people distinctly heard yelling of "You're taking too many" and "I know what you've been doing" and even "How do you know what good for us" at the early crack of dawn. By the end of the argument, there was a loud exclamation of "You've had enough light, and so have I!". Soon after that was said, there was a blood curlinging scream, a horrid one of shredded voical cords that could make all the bird stop chirping and the river stop flowing. And by the time the sun fully rose, it had all gone silent, so painfully silent.
The Angel hasn't been seen by anyone after that daybreak and for some reason unknown, The Beast had become far more reluctant to give up his lantern and it's newly lit bright, white flame. The song of the forest Angel was far long dead and the forest seemed to lose it's liveliness, it's color, it's life. And whatever life that could be found, it was cut down and fed into an ever-hungry flame, a cursed lantern with a thousand voices, but not a single one was able to say "Help me".
That was extremely beautiful to read! You should've been hired as a co-director for the show or at least had a chance to write a comic from the official comic series of the show. I will now cherish your comment as a somewhat canon beginning on how the unknown and beast first were, before the events of Wirt and Greg's adventure.
