The beast is a very well-written villain. He tricks people into thinking he's helping them in order to keep his lantern lit, yet we don't know the true reason he's trying to keep the lantern lit. All of this together makes him much more interesting as a villain, in my opinion. Not to mention he has a brilliant voice...

0:45 "Grow, tiny seed! You are gone to the tree, Rise, till your leaves fill the sky, Until your sighs Fill the air in the night. Lift your mighty limbs, And give praise... _To the _*_fire."_* Think about what Greg is actually saying here. He's describing becoming a tree like a good thing, as though his leaves filling the sky and his sighs filling the air of the night would be good, describing his future limbs as mighty, but not only that... he describes his mighty limbs being lifted _in praise_ of the *FIRE.* The very thing that's destined to consume him should he become a tree. Now, I don't know if that's a matter of Greg's adorable naivety, and he's just trying to comfort himself about his fate, or if this is actually the Beast singing in Greg's voice, trying to convince Greg, whispering in his ear, that turning into a tree will be good for him, making him think it's his own thoughts, giving him this false sense of security that everything will be alright for him if he only gives in. Also notice how the parts about growing mighty and giving praise to the fire aren't actually in Potatus et Molassus. Just the beginning of Greg's part in Come Wayword Souls, "Grow, tiny seed, you are called to the trees..." He's also _called_ to the trees now, not "gone." This to me maybe says that Greg's part in Wayward Souls might actually be the Beast trying to convince Greg that he's already gone, and that he should just give in, while the reprise in Potatus et Molassus might be Greg's response, _almost_ being ready to give in, however, that's when Wirt interrupts his near acceptance of his fate, and decides that he won't let Greg die like this. He's not letting Greg praise the fire that will destroy his soul. Either way, these lyrics feel _brilliant._ 👏
I have an interesting conection with this song... Im a simpel guy from Sweden. I don't earn much and I lived at home for a long time. But one day I moved out with my lovely girlfriend and about a year later we went on our first vacation on ourself to London. That was the BEST vacation ever. we decided what and when we would do everything. Such freedom and London is such an old, big and beautiul city! But... then short after that we was forced to move. We came to a cold apartment that was filled with mold in the walls. Also Greta Thunberg started to shout and scream to people to never go with airplane again. My gf was scared to ever fly again and we was stuck in a cold home. Whenever I would hear this song, I would feel so depressed. We watched this tv-show directly after London so it felt like they were conected. It felt like the song would say: that happy time was AGES ago,. Everything fun is over and now you are stuck in the darkness.
