  • The Great Lake is one of my favorite sections of the game, despite it being a completely optional location to visit ('optional' in the same way that the Wedding location in chapter 1 is optional)
It's a shame that the lake isn't tied to some kind of quest that makes it necessary (or worthwhile) to visit because it is the perfect survival horror scenario, it has everything..
Dangerous environmental conditions combined with dangerous enemies delivers a real slice of survival horror action.. and to be honest that is the main reason it is worth going to this location, purely for the experience..
I wish there were maybe a couple more hardcore locations like this in the game, just to up the action levels a bit (because there aren't too many places where you get the chance to use your full arsenal of weapons, utility & skills)
The reward for clearing the location is some 'rubber boots' which grant poison immunity from stepping on poisonous mushrooms, corpses & worms (basically a wearable version of Antidote)
    NOTES
I'm using the REOCCURRING NIGHTMARE mod in this clip, hence why chompers were taking 2 rifle bullets to kill & 2-3 shotgun shells
Destroying 'The Snout' is the key to clearing the storm
Approaching the centre of this location from the very swampy eastern side slightly hindered my ability to use flares, molotovs & gas bottles effectively. If I had approached from one of the other sides I would have had slightly better lines of sight to land gas bottles on multiple targets and ignite the gas (with flares) to burn everything in the area
The swamp water can sap your stamina and slow you down (and swallow your throwables), it has the exact same effect on chompers, therefore you can use the swamp to your advantage by leading chompers into the water to drastically reduce their mobility
    VIDEO
I made a 'cinematic' version of this edit.. • Darkwood | Great Lake (Note that it is not technically a widescreen version, it's just black bars letterboxing the image to block out the UI to emulate a cinematic widescreen effect)
I couldn't decide which version I preferred because even though I like the way the black bars version focuses the action, I find that hiding the UI removes important information about what is going on
