I've always experimented with different ways of re-balancing the vanilla Darkwood experience without using mods. I have my own ideas on how Darkwood could be re-balanced, but I'm not a modder so it will never happen.. However, I caught wind of a new Darkwood mod in development and it piqued my curiosity..
The REOCCURRING NIGHTMARE mod (by Totalitarian) is attempting to re-balance the game in interesting ways. The final update (v.1.4) changed a few little things that were staple for a long time in v.1.3, so one of the things the mod does is to revert some of those changes..
The mod also tweaks the in game economy (to re-balance resource levels) and increases enemy activity.. Basically imagine if the v1.4 update had re-balanced the game in a slightly different direction, and instead of making the game easier it expanded upon the established v1.3 difficulty level
With modding there's always a danger that making something harder could inadvertently make it less interesting. There's a real art to reworking an aspect of gameplay to make it more interesting and harder at the same time..
I've been asked to playtest this mod (while it's in development) and I'm loving it, it's pretty hardcore and action packed. There are also a lot of simple things in this mod which I would have loved to have seen in vanilla

I made a 'cinematic' version of this edit.. • Darkwood | Reoccurring... (Note that it is not technically a widescreen version, it's just black bars letterboxing the image to block out the UI to emulate a cinematic widescreen effect)
I couldn't decide which version I preferred because even though I like the way the black bars version focuses the action, I find that hiding the UI removes important information about what is going on
