    I just close my eyes in vr. Fixes the problem.

    In theory, if the market grows enough then running a local vr-themed business (bar, arcarde etc) could open up the potential for higher end hardware to be more available to the average person. For example, a warehouse could be sensor'd up widely enough (in conjunction with a wireless headset or some mobile substitute) that the user could physically walk around the real world and vr in tandem. Or more tangibly just throwing a vr treadmill in a rentable arcade space so people could experience it for contained sessions. It's no solution to the issue, but interesting food for thought.

      We've had those VR Arcades here in Toronto, but they quickly closed down dur to lack of interest. The biggest reason being VR is usually a more social experience and most gamers prefer playing solo

      Thank you. I like to put a decent amount of research into my videos and cover things I don't see other people talking about. VR is an interesting problem because it's the first time I can think of a biological limitation being a major issue for designing a videogame.

    I remember watching Patlabor 2 and the intro sequence to that movie has the labor pilot Noa test out a new VR control scheme for her mech, and she comments how it makes her feel sick which the mechanic replies people in the future will evolve to the new tech. I also remember when FPS games first came out how lots of people complained about motion sickness when playing them for the first time. So adaption really is key, plus having better tech with a higher FoV, resolution, and refresh rate will help out a lot.

      If VR sickness is caused by sensory discordance, wouldn't improving visual fidelity just make it worse? Field of view, resolution, and refresh rate improvements can only increase the gap between sight and the sense of motion. VR goggles might be a dead end on the road to the fantasy we've been sold.

    VR is just awesome and a revolution! Can't believe anyone would say it's just a fad or boring. Absolutely destroys playing games on flat tv too, especially for racing, flying and sport games! Perfect for table tennis, tennis, badminton..etc.. due to depth. Also, art stuff, travelling the world or meeting and chilling out with people in a virtual world (i.e. like in the Matrix movie). Way too awesome!

    Another good vid. Curious to see how much measures like reducing the FOV or adding static objects affect the amount of information read in fast-paced games like arena shooters. The Polygon YT channel recently uploaded a short video that explained how crosshairs and cursors also helped motion sickness in early first-person games. It turns out they had more utility than expected.

  • @thefowles1
    @thefowles1 4 роки тому +7

    The biggest issue for me with any VR/3D effect is that there is no proper depth of field/focus on objects at different distances. If you look at a real object far away, objects right in front of you will be out of focus. You don't get that in VR/3D; as of right now, the technology doesn't seem to exist that tracks where your gaze is to allow for focusing/defocusing objects properly. That's what gives me headaches.
    I'm glad this video was made about the inner-ear sensory matching with what motion the eyes perceive; it's good that people are noticing the shortcomings and bringing focus (ha) to what needs improving.

    • @OhManTFE
      @OhManTFE 4 роки тому

      Why would you complain about such a thing lol. That is a negative aspect of real life vision that we don't have to deal with in VR. It's the same in a regular video game in some games that is a graphical setting u can turn on or off

    • @thefowles1
      @thefowles1 4 роки тому +2

      OhManTFE it's not the same as in "regular" video games, which are viewed on a 2D display without any genuine projection of depth.
      Depth of field was implemented in video games _because_ it's a realistic sensory effect of the human eye, and having that effect in a game simulates how the imagery would be viewed in the real world. There is no "dealing" with it in reality because it's not a negative - it's biologically correct. Your brain expects to receive focal information when viewing objects at different distances, and when it's being tricked into thinking it's seeing an environment in real space around you but there is no depth, it doesn't properly comprehend it. And it's a shortcoming of VR.

    • @blackoppsman702
      @blackoppsman702 4 роки тому +2

      For me when playing vr, my brain focusses on what I'm looking at and blur's out what's around it. So for me there is no reason to do that, as far as I can see, that's like saying in real life the world needs to blur what your not looking at, when really it all happens in your brain. But that's just my experience.

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 4 роки тому

      You're right, and wrong on this. VR does have real life depth to it, but only up to a certain point of focal range, and your eyes do blur out the surrounding environment naturally when focusing on something within the focal range, so I'm not quiet sure where you are getting that from. When things get really close to the viewer's eyes, your eyes can't adjust naturally and make it sharp, but again, only up to a certain distance is this relevant. The visual range of depth isn't as large. Everything is more at the mid range, and things far away still feel far away, it's just that the resolution isn't there yet, so it's blurry and gives a false sense of depth. Oculus are working on fixing that already, and by all accounts, they've succeeded in doing so. Google Half Dome 3 and you'll see an actual working prototype of the new Oculus Rift.

    Here is part of the problem.. When we look around in real life our eyes don't just turn but actually swing side to side and even up and down. This causes objects closer to us to shift around faster in perspective faster than objects in the background which is how we see things naturally, not stationary to each other like a jpg image. Now objects will appear to be outside a window and not stuck to its frame like a picture. This will make any game feel much more real and also smoother because the entire screen is not shifting around at same speed. It's a simple fix for any game.. place the camera on the eyes and the pivot for the camera on the neck, that's it. Here is the fix shown in Skyrim exaggerated to show the effect: ua-cam.com/video/2JMmN9RfJQQ/v-deo.html

    • @steve_ire321
      @steve_ire321 4 роки тому

      This is not needed in VR because you already have 6DoF and binocular 3d depth. Your eyes and head are moving through 3d space. On a 2d screen, I can see where this would apply, but if you added that into VR, it wouldn't look correct at all. It's the same thing motion blur tries to do, because your looking at something move on a flat screen. Motion blur in VR doesn't have the same effect, because again, its just not needed. Your eyes are already filling in the information.

    • @WelcomeToTheGoldenPage
      @WelcomeToTheGoldenPage 4 роки тому

    Just commenting to say that this is another great video, and I hope your decision to play ads on videos results in your deserved popularity without coming at the cost of selling out.
    I haven't had the experience of VR myself, but I'm still not convinced it's anything more than a gimmick. When I think about the most immersive games I've ever played (Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, Half-Life 1), the biggest barrier to immersion in the first place was parsing game actions into physical controller actions (climbing ropes in Dark Messiah took some getting used to, for instance). With VR, even if I were to acclimate to the controls, I'd constantly be taken out of the experience by seeing my character's shaky grip on his gun/sword/whatever.
    If I have enough control over my character to point and shoot without worrying about bullet trajectory, that's good. If I constantly need to adjust my aim and see my imperfect human hand motions translated 1:1 into a video game, then that breaks immersion. Did you ever experience anything similar when you were playing VR?

    • @welfarewalrus597
      @welfarewalrus597  4 роки тому

      To the first part, the amount of money youtube ads have given me since putting them on has been so low that I don't think it would even be able to "Sell out" on the pennies I have received assuming that stays around constant.
      For other two paragraphs I find finger tracking actually really helps with immersion as long as it's working. When it doesn't (say I try to grab something and it doesn't get grabbed) that effects immersion a bit. Aiming is harder in VR but at the same time it feels like shooting a real gun (minus the weight and recoil) because just like in real life I am not very good at shooting. On the other hand I have seen people who actually have good IRL gun aim do great in both light gun games and VR and so far I have seen the difficulty to aim actually increase my immersion.

    I was always interested in the idea and had hoped it would eventually catch on but ever since Valve unveiled HL Alyx, I am pretty keen on getting an Index myself. I kind of think of myself being able to handle the disconnect that causes MS but even if at first it does affect me, I‘d want to keep on using it until I eventually get used to it. I just hope that after Alyx it really takes up flight.

    I think its probably way better for beginners in vr to use a game controller with a joystick to move, instead of waving with hand hold controllers. Also use your eyes to look around, to avoid moving your head to much. And try to relax. Too much tension, and an expectation to feel sick, will increase the risk for how you dont want to feel.

    I just finished watching a playthrough of Half-Life: Alyx, and I wanted to know if you planned to cover it or make an addendum to this video. HL:A is probably the best VR game ever made, and while that is a low bar, I think it has introduced many mechanics and conventions which developers will be copying shamelessly in the coming years.
    - "gravity gloves" to pick things up so you aren't constantly kneeling
    - handheld inventory that limits you to a small but mechanically distinct selection of items
    - puzzles that are more than simply opening boxes and looking underneath tables
    - actual level design that seems like something you'd see in a real video game
    - focus on ranged combat instead of unsatifying/heavily automated melee combat

    • @welfarewalrus597
      @welfarewalrus597  4 роки тому

      I thought about it but I feel many people have discussed this. I prefer to make videos about subjects I haven't seen anyone else talk about. HL:A will (and have already) had a huge effect on VR and will likely make a standard list of practices for these types of games that will be felt for years. However it's biggest contribution will likely be increasing the amount of people that own VR devices.

    nice video. honestly i think the largest issue is with the fps. i get zero motion sickness on my psvr (which I use on my PC), i have an absolute belly gut. it's 120hz. but then i played elite: dangerous once, and... i got motion sick. why? because the game is such unoptimized sh!t that it kept on missing frames. so everything was delayed by one frame, and the frame rate was about half that. i feel like a lot of people will stop being motion sick once we get 120hz with a frame rendering time of 2ms or less. and yes, that means that the gpu is idle for 6.3 ms of every frame - but the low lag is important imo. in my opinion: why do most people get motion sick in vr? because most headsets run at 90 hz or less, and most games run at 60fps or less. it's that simple. i honestly have never heard of anyone who can run a game at 120hz or more, at low lag, and still get motion sick. but if i'm wrong - please do tell me, i'd love to be disillusioned here.

      @@welfarewalrus597 Reticles can be as simple as a little white dot, so I'd assume it'd be better than a whole nose. Maybe a reticle alone just isn't effective enough.

    I tried Skyrim VR on PS4. Couldn't get through 5 minutes before getting sick.

      To be fair, the PS VR is very low quality compared to the PC Headsets. Do not think of that as the current state of vr. Its bad refreshrate, resolution etc. really contribute to motion sickness. I personally got sick really really quickly and badly when i started playing games with free movement on my index at first, but you DO get used to it, believe me. I rarely got sick after about 2 weeks of playing

    2021 and it's styill an expensive fad
    too many half assed games on VR, and too many half assed AAA devs who can't innovate even if given the most obscene budgets in the world.
    the UI, controlls and simple mechanisms for interactivity bneed to be standardised in a way that everyone seems to not want to do (one dev, one product, NO COPYING MY WORK OR I'LL TELL MY DAD WHO IS BIGGER THAN YOUR DAD!)
    there's scope for VR commanders, crew, support, static gunners, special enemies, dungeon masters and even as raid-boss style encounters in FPS/mmo/action-RPG type games but most devs are still tripping over getting even basic tech-demos out to market or games like alyx/elite-dangerous/bridge-crew would only need a little modding (map mouse/keyboard functions to a macro that emulates certain movement types) to become fully fledged regular titles with a more chill outlay. Yes you losoe the immersion btu you also loose the cost of a specialist display unit, specialist controllers and the cost of buying into a still-prototype tech while no one knows how to properly handle or acchieve it's potential.

    I don't mind hearing differing views on VR, but fucking hell, mate, you're about 3 years behind the times on this. Another thing: calling VR a "fad" is bollocks. Fads die off quickly, and major industries tend not to pump billions of dollars/pounds/euro into R&D if something is a fad. Reassess your thinking on this. It's an emerging tech, and a fast growing, brand new medium in various industries, not just gaming. VR has the potential to literally change how we interact with the world and entertainment as we know it. Motion sickness is a valid concern, but its overblown, and will eventually be a non issue. Plus you can acclimate to it if you suffer. It just takes a bit of patience and time.
