WHAT IS DISCUSSED IN THIS VIDEO
40% TO 70% have experienced symptoms of VR Sickness (Cybersickness). There are many theories to why we experience motion sickness, but most of them include a sensory conflict between our eyes and ears. VR, like the oculus quest 2, causing something called Vection (visual illusions of self motion), but our ears don't sense it, causing cybersickness. Here are 5 eye tips to help:
-20/20/20 rules: take a break every 20 minutes
-Have a correct IPD
-Wear your visual correction
-Wear contacts or VR prescription lenses if you can
-Ocular-motor exercises (research is lacking with this one)
Check out the bonus tips near the end of the video.

*Pro Tip: take 1-2 ginger pills 20 mins before. NOT gingerale (which has zero real ginger). Get the stuff that is simply dried natural ginger. Works better than all these tips combined. FYI - I'm extremely sensitive to motion sickness .... yet completely free of VR nausea when doing this.
Where do u get ginger pills from
@@alfiemarsden3419 any health food store
thanks. i get motion sickness from normal stuff like reading in the car, videogames/phone in the car.
Ginger helps with VR and car sickness, altho, i still cant do phones in the car
I got the gravol ginger chews. Helps so much
I have ginger in a jar, could I mix that with water and drink it?
The eye exercises are really useful. This is a great tip. As someone who works on a computer 40 hours a week, these are really necessary to keep your eyes healthy and strong.
Im sure this is a great tip for VR too. I'll try it out. Thanks
Thanks for helping me understand this a lot better and I promise to use my vr more carefully now because this feeling isn’t fun
Ty so much, I didn't even think about tip number 2, great video
you're welcome!
Great video! Thank you
Great info thanks!
I appreciate this video, thanks.
Thanks for this! I’m a PT that has done a bit of vestibular rehab, and I’m also someone that has struggled with motion sickness my whole life. I was hesitant about getting into VR due to this, as well as my bad experiences on VR motion sim rides, trying out FPV drones with goggles, and using prior low tech VR (ie Google Cardboard). However, thus far I’ve done surprisingly well with my Quest 2 - I’ve really tried to avoid smooth movement /thumbstick controlled games and don’t try to push through any feelings of sickness. I’m hoping to push my VR legs a bit and see if there’s any real world motion sickness improvement. I will definitely continue to check out your channel!
Thanks for the awesome comment! Glad to hear you are doing good with the quest 2. I do pretty good until there is smooth motion turning with the thumbstick. That gets me every time.
Awesome work that you do, Craig! I'll probably be doing vestibular rehab soon. Those of us who need it really appreciate it.
@@DrEyeGuy tried out the new game Nock last night. Was really hoping that I could tolerate it but just couldn’t. Movement isn’t thumbstick controlled but rather “grabbing” and pulling yourself or the environment. A bit too fast and dynamic for me right now, but hopefully the vestibular system gets a little more acclimated!
@@julilla1 thanks! For some people vestibular rehab can have great results. Wishing you well!
I've seen some videos on that game. It almost made me dizzy just watching the video. 😄 I'll have to give it a shot and see how it goes.
Thank you I'm a kid and it really helped me I felt horrible after vr and these helped me alot
Thank you 🙏
Spinning around and around to show us nystagmus shows real dedication! The exercises using the pens look just like some vestibular exercises I've been doing lately. I could see how they might help for VR motion sickness as well. Really good tips here.
haha... what was tricky is that I had my 8 year old recording me. He had a hard time keeping the camera on my eyes, so I had to redo the spin a few times. Was feeling pretty sick afterwards.. haha.
@@DrEyeGuy 🤢
Haha, true! I felt sick just watching him soon around like that
*spin
Cool! I used to be able to do 1 hr sessions with my quest 2 then one time i got sick and kept going. It happened 3 times and i was physically sick for over 16 hours or more each time. Even 3 minutes would make me sick from then on. I took along break and little bits trying to retrain my brain!
Thank you for commenting this! I was going to mention this in the video but never did. Sometimes if you get sick in VR, and you push through, it can last for hours afterwards. Hopefully you can get back to normal.
Who's here after buying a psvr 2
I was curious why more people are searching this topic.
Me bro, 1st day with it and i can only last 5m before feeling sick. Really regretting the purchase because it feels real bad.
@@fabiangarcia4982 you're not alone haha, I'll try to adapt by playing every day for however long I last, if it doesn't get better in 2 weeks I actually might have to sell it again. :x
@@fabiangarcia4982 it first after about 15 minutes it was making me sick but if you can find a game you can play and take breaks you actually can build up a tolerance to it now I can play for hours it didn't take long
@@fabiangarcia4982there are thing to make you feel less sick stuff like teleportation instead of walking really reduces it and snap Turning
Do those eye exercises they helped me a lot and with time vr starts feeling more natural you start to not notice your controllers and such.
It's moving around that kills me lol
Word
Turning on snap rotation helps a lot but I've also resorted to taking motion sickness/nausea meds 20 min before gameplay and afterwards which helps. I don't want my body to become reliant on it so I take short breaks after 20 minutes of gameplay like you suggested. Also, thanks for answering my question with the glasses. I'm near sighted (not completely bad) but wasn't sure if it was helping during VR. I'll try wearing it again to see if that helps.
not eye-related, but one thing that helps many, is to have a fan gently blowing at you form the front.
a lesser known trick for games with joystick controls is, to hold the right stick pushed foward when turning. this makes the turning much more controlled and less twitchy, which just feel better, even when you got strong VR legs.
but most importantly: motion sickness isnt something to worry about, or that needs immediate fixing. IT'S NORMAL AT FIRST! ..and will drastically decrease over time.
Awesome comment! Thank you for the extra tips!
tldr: Very true the motion sickness can drastically decrease over time.
yes! I was shocked because the first time I played Alyx I said there is no way I can walk with joystick, I'm gonna have to teleport and I stopped playing after 20 minutes. Came back 2 days later and played Pavlov and Echo and had no problem! And to think I almost returned my Quest 2 because of that :D
I just started using VR. I used the National Geographic game a few times. Movement in the game is one of two ways: instant teleportation or fluid movement (basically walking using the control stick). When I use instant teleportation I have no issues, I start using fluid movement I experience motion sickness and my balance is hard to maintain.
It’s like a light switch for me: I turn it on, I feel sick and my balance is harder to maintain. Turn it off and sickness and balance issues go away.
I definitely think it’s the visual cues not matching what your vestibular system is telling you.
When I was walking around in Horizon, I made the movement like I was really running, and I really started to get dizzy. I stopped immediately, and later today, I'm going to try playing it sitting down. 🙃
Thanks for the video, I'm new to VR!
You're welcome! I hope you are able to enjoy VR.
@@DrEyeGuy Its been a great start!
When i play racing games in vr i always put a fan in front of me too simulate drive wind.
It helped me a lot.
Get someone to throw cushions at you. You can pretend their Just Stop Oil Protesters.

Thank you for the great video! :)
Do you maybe have a study for the walking-in-place Tip?
That would help a lot!
Hi! Most of what I found were from VR conferences and demonstrations like here: ieeexplore.ieee.org/abstract/document/8708972
At least those were the most recent findings from previous studies.
Thank you for another great video. I've gotten a bit whoosy/dizzy when my husband & I play Walkabout Mini Golf, especially when the course is set in high places. The space station course was the worst. He can do the flying motion in the game, where that gives me VR motion sickness. My husband shared an article with me about using chewing gum to counter cybersickness. I started chewing mint gum when we play and that seems to help me more than having candied ginger. I also got my Rx headset lenses from Reloptix, thanks to your video on Quest 2 Rx lenses, and am realizing that having the lenses apparently helped, too.
Thank you for commenting! Glad to hear your lenses are working out for you. I also chew gum while I'm playing, it helps me a ton.
I never used VR in my life, but I do get motion sickness, while using cleaning standing moving machines at work, or at 6 flags. Using motion sickness patches, I seen some improvements at work. PS: I didn't work right away.
With the Quest 2 I had no motion sickness. On Quest 3 I get motion sickness. I do experience motion sickness when I play high graphics games. I will try the ginger ale tip
Thanks for all the tips great video
Hey. Thanks for the info about motion sickness the one that I use that you mentioned is chewing gum thanks to you I tried chewing gum and it worked I didn't get any motion sickness after chewing gum while I was playing the so good tips in this video keep up the good work 😂
New to VR and I have played Moss 1, Horizon Call of the Mountain, Tetris Effect, no motion sickness at all, but 15 minutes of Kayak Mirage VR was enough to make me stop and it pretty much took a few hours to feel normal. It sucks but thanks for the tips will try them out, especially the target practices and the fan.
Same here, the only game Kayak made me feel sick (nausea all day). When i started Norway in Kayak mirage it got me so bad,i think we must ignore this game.
Check out Red Matter. Excellent graphics, puzzle solving, and you can move by teleporting and snap turning. I think Red Matter 2 may already be out. Really cool visually. Also Beat Saber is insanely fun. Zero motion sickness because you don’t move, the cubes do. The Room is another cool puzzle solving game. I just tried Hubris a few weeks ago and after running, jumping, climbing and swimming in the game setup I got so sick I felt it for almost 2 weeks. 😭 I really wanted to play that game!
I tried some free Roller Coaster game in VR and was having cold sweats and was about to throw up :D Then my niece tried the same game and was totally fine :D
blaming the game... wow
same with me but I played gran turismo sport vr
I don’t feel sick, but I watched this a lot before I got my PSVR2
So tru man
Gratefully I haven't had any issues but I get major motion sickness so maybe I will with a certain game so I'm filing this away to help in case that happens!
Hopefully it never happens.
I used to experience slight motion sickness in the beginning. after a month or so usage my body got used to it i guess. never had the sickness again
Hi, from Bucharest, Romania ! I am 39 years old and suffer from motion sickness since childhood. Antiemetic drugs are of no use to me and journeys, including by train, are tormented for me. I feel strong fatigue and nausea during a travel by train. Unfortunately in car rides is the worst. Besides the classic motion sickness that you describe in this video, I think I have an increased sensitivity to vibrations and speed variations. I feel pressure and an unpleasant sensation when the car is turning, accelerating and decelerating. Then I start to feel nauseous, feeling which sometimes suddenly increases in intensity. I have had a few flights recently. I feel every movement of the airplane like a strong pressure in the chest, back or head. Ofcourse, I also, sometimes feel nauseous on the plane and flying is stressful for me. I would not resist traveling more than an hour by the airplane. I really don't know how to stop being sensitive to speed variations and vibrations.
Thank you for sharing your experience. Motion sickness can really affect people in different degrees. I hope you are able to find something that is helpful.
Try ginger pills. 1 or 2 about 20 mins before any activity you know will cause nausea. I'm also quite sensitive. But once I started doing this, zero problems. Just make sure to get the real stuff ie. dried ginger. Not gingerale or ginger flavour etc.
@@RoguePC4U Thanks for your advice I will try it.
Off topic but I wanted to catch you, Doc: in the mornings to help treat dry eye, I put in my artificial tear drops followed by my warm compress session. If I wanted to add in a lid cleanse step to this regimen, where would I add it? Before the drops? Between the drops and compress? After the compress? Where is the most effective spot? thanks for your great vids and advice...you are literally improving people's lives.
Usually you would want to do it after the warm compresses, as the warm compresses can help soften debri on the eyelashes and eyelids. If you have a lot of debri, you could always do the lid cleansing at the first of everything. Thanks for the great question.
@@DrEyeGuy thanks for the reply. Maybe you could do a video on this: the best order of treatments to help establish or optimize our dry eye routines. In other words, how to get the most put of your drops, cleanse, conpressing, blink exercises etc by doing them in the most effective order.
@@BellMichael-sh4xi That is seriously an awesome idea for a video! This is goin going on the top of my list. Thank you!
I actually walk while pressing the forward/strafe thumbstick in vr to avoid motion sickness or I play cockpit(usually 3 DoF) sitting vr games.
Yeah i sometimes use my phone in the car (as a passenger) and I wondered why I feel sick
so THANKS
Same thing happens to my wife, she can barely even look down in a car without getting sick.
@@DrEyeGuy does she get motion sickness in vr?
@@alfiemarsden3419 she does a little bit, but not nearly as much as in the car.
@@DrEyeGuy I want to get one but I have bad travel sickness so I don’t know if it’s worth the £400 if it’s gonna make me sick if I play it
Def took some time to adjust first play thru in bonelab didnt even last 10 mins and i got sick, second playthrough was about 15 to 20,last night i put in a good hr so i think am getting used to it still get a little nauseous but overcoming it,gonna try the gum to see if it also helps. Also i found out that moving myseld as much as i could instead of using the joys stick helped out alot.
That might explain why I get ill while playing my vr2! My headphones are busted and I'm getting a replacement soon.
i know this was a year ago but it helped very since got a vr for christmas and i felt sick dizzy head aches and blood shot eyes but after witching this i don 't have blood shot eyes and get less head aches
Hello Doc, many thanks for the easy explanations and useful tips on this. I just have a question, if you don't mind. I cannot stand VR, not even for 5 minutes, I get sickness every time, but I do play on Xbox. recently, I've been experiencing headaches while playing a First Person Shooter. Lots of colors, flashes, and explosions, and haven't felt like this until recent days. Do you have any tips for that or something useful for us who play in a console, and these type of games? Thanks a lot in advance!
Would cybersicknes be where when I stand up I feel like I’m going to collapse and when I hold something I drop it and is very weak
i think there may be another factor to consider when looking at IPD. I believe there can be some asymmetry in the face and in the position of pupils relative to parts of the face to the face plate of the headset uses as the mount/lock-in position of the head-mounted display. with the quest 2 the IPD adjustment is assuming a person the face and pupils, vertically and horizontally on face
I've measured my IPD. it is 66.2 cm. setting 3 is to wide and setting 2 is to narrow. I acutally managed to put the setting between 2 and three on my Oculus quest 2
the beginning is like the gamestop employee to my mom when i want a game
i was wondering why i was vomiting but then i realized i only feel sick after playing VR games
Dr. EyeGuy, I am scheduled to have DMEK and the installation of Vivety lenses this summer. I am a school teacher that uses VR everyday with my students. I am concerned that the Vivety will make it so that VR will no longer look right and thus jeopardize my ability to do my job. Your thoughts?
Excellent question Todd! There are a lot of things to consider and think about for this one. Overall I think it's going to be a good thing and likely improve your vision and actually help with VR. With the vivity lens (I'm assuming you are a doing a multifocal lens), it should provide distance, intermediate, and near vision...as long as it's positioned correctly. VR usually sets their focal point a little bit further out in the distance (Oculus Quest 2 is 1.3meters out). That lens should do well that far out because it has a good depth of focus. There may be some limitations with glare or halos in VR... possibly... I'm not sure? But overall, I would think that it should help. If it doesn't, there's still a chance with correction, either glasses or VR lens inserts, that it could help. Tough to say because of so many factors. Are you having this surgery in both eyes, or just one eye?
Excellent video. I was wondering IF anyone knows that IF America's Best Eyeglasses have Quest 2 Lenses? Thanks. :)
I dont think they do, at least I haven't heard if they do. Thanks for commenting!
Darn, its not looking so great for me. I have amblyopia of the left eye, it super blurry and glasses dont work. I wonder if thats why I get cyber sickness. :( So many jobs I wanted passed me up cause of my sight and now I can't enjoy VR.
As someone whos been using the Quest 2 for at least 4+hrs every night, for the last 3 yrs.... i got motion sickness early on from sitting. As long as i stood up, i was fine. Even now, occasionally I'll feel it & stand up and it goes away. (I dont wear prescription glasses).
My 27 yr old daughter also uses her Q2 alot, but has very bad eyesight..she tends to still get motiin sickness once in a while. Most times standing up helps.. other times she just needs a break.
**Question for the Dr!** Do you ever go into Horizon Worlds??
Hi! Thanks for sharing!
And yes I do... I haven't been on in a while, but when I do get on the quest, I usually check out horizon.
Tried live streaming layers of fear with my new oculus quest 2 last night. Got an instant fever and started to throw up. I felt sick all night. It was awful.
I am new to VR, or the Oculus Quest 2. And I started with Comfortable
But then after a week or two, I started to play a Moderate game and I have no motion sickness whatsoever... maybe never
BUT Thanks
Hopefully you are good and won't experience cybersickness. 🤞
To give everyone here that when the Quest 2 is refered as the vomit machine, these users their IPD was not corresponding. Quest 2 has a fixed setting from 59/63/67, mine is 65, the quest 2 made me sick for two days, returned it thinking VR is nothing for me. Than I learned about this IPD, tried the Pico 4 (where you can set the IPD sharp by 0,5mm) and how boy I could play for an hour without any noticable signs of headache nearby. I talked to an optician about it and told me that using lenses in general with a difference of 2mm from your actual IPD was even dangerous to do, the doctor didn't understood that ''dangerous'' products like this were even sold without prescription. And I can tell you he's right as using the quest 2 for 30 minutes really gave me like migraine for two days. Can you guess what it would do when being stubborn and passing a whole day with the device thinking it's just a matter of getting used to the feeling.
I wore my distance glasses with my Quest 2 and it actually made contact between the lens of the headset and the lens of my glasses. The glasses lens was scuffed and I have to see if my optometrist can fix that. My advice would be to definitely use the "glasses spacer" which goes between the headset and the face padding.
I actually wound up ordering prescription lenses for the Quest 2 instead of risking another pair of glasses.
Sorry to hear about your glasses! Thanks for posting this so people can be aware.
I just had to quit playing the vr felt like throwing up 🆙 and a slight headache 😢
This is how I feel after I use it but I love it soo muchhhhh sooo itsss hardeddd

Hallo, I've got another tip for you. @2:22 your lenses look a little dirty. Clean them with a glasses cloth. And @1:20 fluids in your eyes are still spinning around? I find that hard to believe. Is that a proven fact?
The fluids in your ears are still spinning around, not the fluid in the eyes. The b roll of the dirty lenses are from av different video talking about dirty lenses. 🙂
@@DrEyeGuy aha that explains it. Thank you for your tips. I have got another solution that worked for me. Take a office chair that can spin around so you can look around easily. I get less dizzy while sitting down than when I’m standing upright. I can move using the thumb stick and then it is just like a wheelchair experience. It’s ok for casual gaming but less useful if you are playing intensive games.
The 20/20/20 rule certainly doest help in my case. The dizziness hits so hard that I cant even hold for 10 seconds.
I am super sensitive to this it sucks. VR makes me so so sick.
Hi! I’m still gonna like the video, but something amazing abt me is I can play for hours and be fine lol
Yeah

Thanks! That's awesome! Some people are lucky and don't experience it at all.
none of these helped me sadly not for the lack of trying. I wonder if its because the fluid in my ear not synchronizing with my eyes like what you where saying earlier. my body doesn't move as much as what shows in the vr games and the audio is't good enough to probably convince my ears or something of that matter.
Iv had them all apart from throwing up 😆
And i normal have strong stomach for these things
I strongly don't recommend using glasses when playing VR. I've unfortunately scratched my PSVR 2's lens because my glasses rubbed up against it. There's now damage on my glasses and has become extremely distracting.
Instead, invest in some perscription lenses for your specific VR headset
Well i dont have that
You should be a doctor! because you’re so good at knowing how we focus and stuff and our balance and that stuff😎 yeah

Hello! I just found your page looking for motion sickness treatments and I have an eye question. Last fall I got contacts for the first time. They worked great. I loved them. Until this year when the pollen hit and I haven’t been able to wear them since. They made my eyes so red they looked bloody and they felt like I had gravel in them now and then. (It’s not concretions) it looks like I have a permanent crescent shaped mark on each eye now from the contacts. The eye dr I’ve been going to just seems puzzled and gave me dailies to try because he can’t think of anything else. He says my eyes are suddenly dry. Any ideas on how to fix this? Am I doomed to glasses?
Im so sick of them. 😫
My tip is to never artificially turn. Any time i do its never pretty
I think watching from the same distance for long periods can't help.
That’s why I didn’t have to go to school
It’s the first time I’ve used VR bought the psvr2. played it for about a hour first night and second night same.but when I tuck the vr set off the second night felt like I was still in vr visually everything seemed to go at some sort of shutter speed and was very weird can someone explain what this is ?? Is this motion sickness or something different??

I played the quest 2 and after, I looked at my hands and they seemed so unreal. So disconnected. How do we actually know we're all not in some advanced sim right now?

Have a terible motion sickness, but I my cybersickness is way worse..
Idk if it's just me but this vid is incredibly quiet.
I thought I had learned my lesson from a previous video...maybe I didn't. I just checked the video and it seems ok to me. I did use a different mic for this video and had issue with it with certain clips, which could be that. Sorry about that, that's what I get for trying something new. 😄
@@DrEyeGuy You're good dude.
I was on my phone if that helps you testing.
@@LampDoesVideogame Yeah, thanks. That helps. It could be my mic... I might just switch back to my other one.
Sooo having a whole computer an inch from your brain has nothing to do with it?? Just looking at an elephant staring me in the face.
No good for eyes
Pro tip: Don't ever use
I have a cure for all of this. Don't buy VR headsets. I feel nauseated and disgusted while I use VR, which is why I gave away my headset. I don't think they use it either. We are entering an epoch where we are delving into technology so much that it's physically hurting us. That's when we say no. VR is unnatural and we don't know the long term consequences. They're too expensive; people stop using them after the novelty wears off. VR sucks. It was a human mistake.
I still use my meta quest 2 a lot. But I'm lucky I don't have sickness from it, but I still limit my usage a lot.
"cybersickness" oh my word what a dumb name.
i hate ppl who get motion sick in vr they ruin it for everyone
