Spot on commentary and problem highlighting. I don't know why aren't more people talking about this trend as it's not subtle at all.

I think people with higher subscriber counts are scared of being seen as xenophobic or something even if that's not actually the case. Maybe people will bring it up once the problems completely manifests themselves but by then it's too late.

      1. Lefties don’t want to seem racist against Chinese ethnic group (or East Asians in general)
      2. Righties defend free range capitalism and make conspiracies about Marxist socialism by foreign globalists to excuse the natural outcomes/‘cons’ of full on capitalism… which means a lot of dicey takes that are usually missing the bigger picture.
Even now we’re blaming Chinese socialism over unfettered American CAPITALISM which actually started from American companies like EA with FEFA and NBA games… from a super capitalist country that literally defend big businesses from almost anything (e.g. under paying workers, destroying the environment, feeding us garbage as “safe to eat”, etc)
America is also one of the biggest markets for loot boxes, micro transactions, or other shady ‘pay to win’ practices. American governments are also okay with this. Heck it is mainly European and South American markets (both actually more socialist) that are the main drivers against this.

I dont care about AAA trash games, let them leave. more room for quality games from smaller studios that are happy enough to make good quality games.

Fallout 3 is a great example of one countries censorship affecting the worldwide product. Here in Australia the government banned Fallout 3 as it used real drug names (I think it was Morphine and others). So they changed it to Stimpacks etc. and rolled this change out for everyone.

This is truly the worst timeline. I know many Chinese from my university days and even they think the Chinese market has no positive future.

Very good video, it's as true or even more so in 2021 as it was in 2019. GOG's handling of Devotion is a troubling reminder of how our own freedom of choice and expression can be eroded in the West because of market forces. And in Hollywood movie productions, compliance with Chinese censorship sometimes goes so far as to bring a Chinese official to movie sets for them to give tips as to how to stay clear of sensitive topics. www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-53676789

1:02 if company changing its target audience to casuals it means that they will never create good games anymore. Blizzard now is not blizzard that we knew, all previous developers left. Now there are cheeky marketologists.

Well, games for "real gamers", that give you negative perks if you do not play every day are also bad as hell. You can simply not expect your players to "eat sleep play repeat" all the time.

As a game developing country I see China an opportunity more than anything else. I have yet not witnessed any case of censorship that has bothered me in any way, not including doings of incompetent devs like behind Rainbow Six: Siege, but their game was already ruined beyond repair long time before the issue, which makes you just not care.
China has not invented microtransactions I assume, it's just a cancerous thing that has spread everywhere. Still, PUBG Mobile where you can face the lootbox and transaction spam ceaselessly, is actually way better developed than the PC version while also free. The original game was basically a money grab at least for half a year after release due to technical issues (some still persist!).
You simply can find good and bad examples of business practices everywhere - and yes, censorship too. Like isn't the toning down of nudity compared to Japanese market a bad thing considering USA, while over the top violence could be considered at the least unnecessary too? In the end, I don't think any country has the right values, like I certainly don't want any half nude underage anime girls hopping on my screen when I game. Each game and what they include has to be judged case by case without constantly mixing countries and their politics into discussion. True freedom in the end is the freedom of choice; if you wish to please China you can, if you don't want to then tune your game for other markets, or just make two versions of it. You control yourself.
PS. Reading some more other comments I think the hateful ones should definitely be deleted (censored).

Know this is an old video but You got the dota 2 skeleton king bit wrong.
Blizzard threatened to issue a lawsuit against valve because they believed that skeleton king was infringing on their copyright (Since it was almost identical to Leoric The Mad King in dota 1, This being in Warcraft 3. Which was created by Blizzard entertainment, very similar model) They were forced to either remove the hero or change it, which is why the Wraithking even happened in dota.
It was valve's attempt to both subtly address the issue without straight up saying "Hey so blizzard had a tantrum here's a hero rework".
    www.leagle.com/decision/infdco20170517b22
    www.cinemablend.com/games/Blizzard-Valve-Settle-DOTA-Lawsuit-42430.html
    www.courthousenews.com/judge-winnows-claims-in-warcraft-infringement-saga/
Valve also was taken to court over the name Dota 2 since blizzard tried to claim that it was owned by them since it was created with the Warcraft 3 map editor. It ended up being settled due to it being a mod and it not having anything to do with the real intellectual product (This being warcraft 3)
Blizzard addressed this issue by adding new TOS to the warcraft 3 remaster and stating that any mod or map created in the map editor belongs to Blizzard entertainment and cannot be used outside of their game.
This took me 10 seconds to google this. I was also an avid dota fan during the whole skeleton king debacle.
Valve decided to finally bite back and released an Arcana for wraith king which granted his old model back but states nothing about "Skeleton king". Only "The One True King".
Again, 10 second google search. Don't do informational video's if you cannot be arsed to do basic research.
