The same era 9.9 and old 9.5 had more torque to push a heavier boat but on a small lightweight boat like yours those OMC 6's would perform pretty darn near the same. I grew up being around them, my dad always loved them. Definitely one of the top motors that OMC ever made.

Just got a 79 6hp evinrude. Put it on my 12 foot aluminum boat and it flies up the river. Only taken it out once when I first got the outboard. I'll take it out Sunday to check its speed on the GPS
haven't got my 6 horse evinrude to go the fast.. timing is okay, new carb very clear engine or it's been replaced.. . redoing the bottom due to a horrible job the last person worked on it.. so i am taking off the old layers to the glass when it was made. fiber & woven full length on the outside W/ Epoxy resin. polyester for doing the flooring W/ copped glass.

Hi Peter. I ran a setup just like yours long ago & can tell you you have more than enough to push that 10 footer. You'll end up wanting to upgrade boats lol. With the brig its light & they're stable tho. Where you at? Im in Ottawa area. Good luck with the new rig.

Aha well i wonder if that valve isn't sealing fully? Can be fixed. But good score on the 58 johnson 10 hp! I had a 57 10 hp & loved it. They are very good. They run strong. Reliable! So well built. Yours may need new coils. Points just usually need cleaning. I did all that & cleaned the carb & wow it ran great. I regretted selling it so got another one plus couple more lol.
You can get parts at "marineengine.com" and apparently there's a source in Canada too im trying to track down. Also check out these 2 antique outboard clubs: "aomci.org" & "mlaoc.ca" -- lots of cool stuff. Motors & parts. Restored & not. I should join this club lol.
I'm genuinely curious about the prop size too. My 72 6hp has the stock 8x7.25 (two blade) on it and it's sluggish as all heck with about the same boat setup as him here. Wouldn't mind buying a new prop to get me out of the hole a bit more. To the OP, the prop size is stamped on the side of most props. If you still have it and want to post the info.
A lot determines your top speed. Boat type, weight and distribution, throttle settings, prop, current, wind, water conditions, gas/oil mixture and temperature....so it's possible to hit 20 mph using this, or about 10...depends on your setup
@@robertkeeton2149 How the hull cuts the water is more or less everything. With the kid in front you change the angle of the hull compared to the water.

I just scored a 1968 6 hp Johnson and 3 gal tank, for free. Motor and tank are near mint, older gentleman took very, very good care of them.
Those old 6 hp Evinrudes are near about bulletproof! I have had several over the years they take a licking and keep on ticking !
Pretty cool little boat. It's all you need for alittle fun on the water
Is your motor all the way in the water or did you adjust the tilt? Moves pretty damn fast for a 6horse
That's one strong 6hp, yeah buddy! Wished those engines were still made today, OMC would still be in business...
Awesome speed for a 6 hp motor😁😁do you know How much IT did?mph or knots?

Ok, truth, do you have any mods on that motor? How fast is it on that boat
No I didn't do anything to it. I bought it off criaglist like it was

how old is the engine?
Is that a two-stroke?
Yes, it is!
That cruises. You use gps to measure speed yet?
Not yet plan to!
