Good balanced review Andy I think you hit on some good and.. not so good points about the game...hopefully the Devs and Modders can iron those problems out..but overall I'm very happy with the remaster and my improved FPS over the original is definitely a bonus! Cheers.
Thank you, Martyn! And yeah, I’d rather play than not, but the pathfinding and AI definitely need a lift in my opinion! Glad to hear you’re happy with it! :)
Thank you so much, Medjay. Yeah me too, although I probably like it more than I dislike it. It just... lacks some optimization, you know what I mean. Glad we’re of one mind, hopefully they can either update it or maybe modders can, although I doubt it.
@@AndysTake Meh, one thing I dislike is that the building icons are small and that the information has been relegated to an in-game wiki - I much preferred a huge PDF document which was fun back then - when you brought RTW you got this thick manual. Now, the building icons and their descriptions - they might be in the game wiki - but I much preferred reading the descriptions as a small guilty pleasure. I can see where they were going with the UI - make it Imperator style and tbh, the Imperator UI even though its complex, its so attractive to look at - they prob got it from there
@@MedjayofFaiyum Yeah, personally I really dislike information that takes you out of the game. The fact that the wiki opens a website in the Steam overlay - I hate it. Much prefer if it was just a menu in the actual game. Completely ruins my immersion.
thanks for talking about the UI issues. i absolutely abhor the new one to the point of not wanting to play anymore. CONSTANT menus, constant clicking. The minimap is completely useless too!
Thank you, Grant! The original is the BEST, and since the Remastered is basically the original, it’s pretty darn amazing as well. The question is more whether you want to replay it or not, since it’s basically the same game, just better looking :)
I got used to the new ui and love it. I really like rome remastered. The athmosphere of the battles is great. They did a really good job. I would pay for a medieval 2 remastered, no question.
This was my first Total War as well. I tried a few well-reviewed Total War games through the years (Attila, Shogun 2), but something is missing the spot. Rome TW was just well balanced in all aspects. They should have just patterned all other TW games to this, just with updated content depending on the historical theme.
people love to hate this game. It is my first Total War. I needed something lighter than EU4 which I love. And also slower than AOE4. It really ticks most of the boxes. Shame that the UI is so outdated
Good review. Isn't the AI pretty dumb on most (all) TW games? I don't mind, because it balances out the tendency of computer opponents to attack me for no reason. If there's a TW game with smart AI, I'd like to know about it. WH1 might be ok, and 3 Kingdoms. I haven't played them much.
Thank you! :D the AI isn’t necessarily the best in Total War in general, but man, Rome 1 (and remastered) is a different beast. At least at launch it was a complete mess.
Seems like remastered left the AI as it was, really really bad in battles, sieges especially. Kinda funny, but ive just seen enemy AI do hammer and anvil in Rome 2...i havent touched it since release, CA did some work.
Been loving it even tho there's flaws i'm happy that the core of my first rts love wasn't altered into something unrecognizeable. Great review and one thing i'd prefer is wiki in game like shogun 2 plz . I've adjusted my color settings on my monitor to match closely to the old map color scheme i love the old one way too much.
Yeah thing is, it’s not necessarily bad. In my opinion it’s just not PC focused. It’s alright, it’s different, just not optimal. One does get used to it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not lacking. Glad you enjoy it too, I especially love the upscaled images which look so much better than in the original.
About performance... I don't think this remaster has been well optimized at all. I have a GTX 1050 i5 and 16 gb or RAM (yeah, i know, it sucks for today's standars, it's a 2017 computer) and in order to get 60 fps i have to low a lot of things. My computer is too good to run the old one but too bad to run this one... I am fn anoyed.
I understand why they decided to change the UI due to scaling, resolution and adding some new features. They could have made something resembeling the original more PC centric UI however but thats a nitpick. And the new faction intros are meh. The original FMV's would have been way too low res, but couldn't they have more or less remade them in engine? I'm a bit torn on the new campaign map but overall I think the new one looks better. But most importantly the map isn't lagging in 20fps and give me a headache so I can actually play the game. Thats great!! All the nitpick aside its great that they have made this game more accesible and playable on modern systems. The one thing I dont understand is why they had to change the general portraits. Some of the new faces of generals look so weird and the faction leaders at the begining of the campaign looks different from the original game. Thats just weird.
Very true, it’s extremely weird that they just straight up changed the general portraits. All in all I love that we got a remaster, happy to hear you enjoyed it and thanks so much for watching :)
@@AndysTake I think I figured out why they changed general portraits. It dawned on me while playing the game:P They seem to have made totally new portraits in engine, in a higher resolution to fit the new UI. Building icons/portraits are smaller so they don't look pixelated while character portraits are bigger in the remaster, and using the original portraits would have made them look very blurry and pixelated just like building portraits look in the original in 1920x1080p res on a modern PC.
I never played any Total War game before playing this remaster and I love it. I don't even play with mods, don't let anyone tell you that they're necessary.
I still love Rome tw and know when it first came out on 3 disc's... Anyway I bought the remastered, because on my high end gaming 💻 the original one doesn't run very well. Anyway it confirmed to me that the combat was way better in this game than in newer Total War's. And I like a mod like EB or the rome 1 realism mod. I don't like about it that every settlement can have walls. So basically every attack on a city is siege especially with RIS that will have 1800 settlements. I hope that not every settlement can get walls. I really want to play the mod once it overhauled all factions. But don't want allmost every battle to be a siege. For me perfect total war game is Rome 2 with DEI and the combat from original Rome 1. Then it wasn't just the 1 vs 1 fighting. I don't know why the battles get even worse. In Pharaoh it looks terrible. I didn't buy it and also don't plan on doing so. In Rome 1 battles looked much more realistic. But the AI and pathfinding has to improve a lot..
Honestly i have been loving rome remastered, as someone who never played orginal rome total war(mainly because it crashed to much wheni first purchased it then refuneded it, im guessing maybe m y PC was to powerful to run it), but i also see the point of view to someone who has played the orginal one and don't really need to play the remastered one
@Andy's Take To be honest surprised at this review - it's pretty well done but lacking in some aspects below are some details : 1) Unlike the harsh backlash I agree the new UI has its ups and downs just like you mentioned - good to see someone shed a fair light on the subject. 2) Regression, the game while improved in some aspects did lack features that existed in the original or works worse than previously was the case - yes now I can speed up the battles, but can I keybind properly like before? no ... this is a big issue. 3) It's never a modders job to fix a game ... if you want your reviews to be taken seriously never assume that it will be fixed by non-company workers. If CA/Ferral fucks up it's their fault and theirs the job to fix the game, if they release it broken criticize it but give room for hope for a fix, if they don't fix then through them under the bus. This is especially true in the case of AI and pathfinding which is completely in the hands of the developers ... sorry but your lack of knowledge of both programming and the modding scene shines in one simple phrase. 4) The Graphical update is noticeable, it's a huge leap for Rome, but is it beautiful? well yes ... in a sense but if I to compare it to Rome 2 is it more beautiful than Rome 2? the answer is no and when you review a product you review it per its cost and if graphics are the thing to lean on, is it worth the cost when you can get Rome 2 cheaper? or 3K which is far better looking than any TW game out there? The graphics look kind of 2010 ~ sharp and nice but still old. I was tempted to leave a like due to your statement regarding Multiplayer Campaign, I was actually surprised they added the merchant (which is obviously a copy of the Medieval 2 code) but didn't copy the Hotseat (which existed for Rome as a 'mod') code and added it ... hack there is mod which adds the ability to play the battles in the Hotseat which they could have added. Personally, I would buy the Remaster immediately if it featured a +4 Multiplayer Campaign, but CA/Ferral won't add this any time in the future if ever to their games which a huge shame.
