- Nostalgia is a hell of a drug. In this review, I discuss Total War Rome Remastered's issues, and why it won't dethrone Total War Rome 2.

*What the hell is this!? The social distancing formation!?*
Laughed my ass off on this one
🤣I stole that joke from someone in my chat during the stream.
That was really funny, and I agree. Why bother doing a remaster but then leave the fighting functions unchanged. What is the point of that?
@@siavashamin951 I think it was worth doing despite the terrible pathfinding and AI, simply because Rome 1 is basically unplayable on Windows 10.
I came down to write the same thing XD I was reeling
Social distance and Black Friday formations... O literally LOL so hard... Hahahaha
The AoE2:DE ai is even more impressive once you dig into how it's scripted; the ai scripts are literally just thousands upon thousands of "if->then" rules which somehow piece together into a coherent and somewhat lifelike ai AND it's more or less just coded by a single guy, who started as a hobbyist.
Holy shit...that is insane.
Okay wow. I know enough about coding to know that that's thousands of hours of work. If that's all one person for the most part then that person is a genius.
@@RJALEXANDER777 I think it definitely is thousands of hours. There's been a handful of people doing it as a hobby basically since the games came out, and the specific person I think has been doing it for maybe 10 years with the new AI being based quite heavily on what they were doing before.
@@willdbeast1523The thought of keeping keep track of all those cases is making my head spin. Making sure the sequences work properly, making sure that the sequences actually result in a capable AI. Astonishing stuff.

As someone who doesn't particulary liked modern TW, but struggles with the clunky controls of Med II and Rome I, this Remaster is worth, A LOT!
Yes, I'm exactly in this demographic. It's basically exactly what I wanted.
Honestly my only gripe is that the move to a numerical UI makes building decisions harder to parse than the bar graph UI if the original.
Same here. I just wanted the same game but looking new. I just really enjoy it
As a long time RTW player the controls aren't clunky, you just need to look at the key bindings and use the features.
Watching UA-camrs play, including the TW specialists, they don't use many of the controls eg) filing down and using "at the double" to pass through gateways and pass through streets.
You can change the controls in og
Why you didn't like the modern ones?
Wait.. what? Hundreds of hours poured into Rome 2 and I never realized there was a feature where your army formatio automatically auto-locks onto the enemy army when you attack? I've always just individually clicked on one cohort to attack another!
Yes ctrl g makes a locked group and g just a group.
@@Kvs-vf9nt To add on top of your reply, there's a button at the bottom (left side) which lets you place your locked group under the AI's command, and you could tell the AI to attack the enemy or defend ground of your choosing.
@@amp8295 Ow yes that's true.👍
@@Kvs-vf9nt It is rather useless if you wanna pursue enemies, cause all it does is form up and sit there looking dumb.
@@amp8295 It's also true. I make a not locked group and micromanage my troups. Not that I have lots to do because the AI is not that smart...
When he gets angry toward the end, suddenly he's 110% Bostonian, it's crazy
Living in the south for so long, I've lost a bit of the accent & learned how to speak "neutral American English," however when I get animated the New England definitely comes out lol.
Edit: worth noting that when you work with the public in the South, you're seen as less trustworthy if you sound like a "Yankee," so losing the accent was something I consciously tried to do. As you can see in the comments section on this video, people go nuts when they hear the R's dropping lmao.

Do note that a medieval2 Remastered is never going to happen now because of the backlash.
I wouldn't say never, but it definitely dampens the chances I agree.
If it ia going to be more of the same then why would you want a remaster? especially if you ALREADY own a functioning old version on Steam
It was never the sales of this that would dictate the chances of that happening. It was the sales performance of the mobile game. That was the only reason this is even a thing. If that sells well they'll probably make a medieval mobile, and then fuck it we've already got this in existence might aswell make some extra cash of it, stick a half arsed version on pc. And we can charge more than double the mobile price for it on pc cos why the fuck not
@@gaaaaaaaaaaah1 mod support and better graphics. I do believe that rerome is superior to the original, but many disagree.
Med2 remaster will happen, rome 1 remaster might start to sell much better in future if they patch it and when we start to get good mods, rights?

A fellow sound enjoyer.
They are also muffled in the original. (Babrien Invasion)
@@gromsword6984 no they aren't, pleantty of mods use the bi.exe and you can hear a lot of sounds when you zoom in, in the remaster you barely hear screams

Well all that I was looking for was Rome 1 with updated graphics. I never expected AI or pathfinding to be reworked at all so I am not disappointed. I can't remember the last time I sunk so many hours into a total war game. I am loving this remaster. Plus, it wasn't too expensive. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't have paid $50 or anything for it. For the price, I have no complaints.
That's awesome man. Glad to hear it.
Hell yea this game kicks ass
The graphics options are a god send on laptops in summer, they could run really hot yet still be laggy (even after the DX8 shim is installed). I really don't need more than 30fps on a strategy game.
It was reworked, it works way worse in the remastered, I have the original and I went and checked, pathfinding and unit AI is sooo much worse.
@@Ackalan The pathfinding in original Barbarian Invasion was worse than Rome 1, how do those two compare now?
Personally I just played a little bit of campaign for nostalgia but the main reason I bought it solely for the mods. Like the collaborative one coming out. I was a huge fan of Europa Barbarorum and im looking for a similar experience

What else did they expect?
I don’t understand why people bitch when they what they want.
This revieuw sums up my thoughts on this game very well, but i still am enjoying it, maybe becouse of nostalgia more than anything.
Thanks for watching :). I enjoyed the nostalgia as well but it wasn't enough to keep me there.
I think it's great, but the modern total war games never really sucked me in.
Empire is probably my fav, so that should qualify the utility of my opinion.
Im really surprised at the negative response to this game maybe its my play style like i don’t use group or the formation attack command but i have run into very few problems even in siege battles. The pathfinding will mess up a little but its nothing i havent been able to fix by giving my unit a second order and/or turning off skirmish. I am one of those people just never stopped playing medieval 2 and have a couple 1000 hours in it though so that might be it.
@@kurtshaw229 what matters is that you enjoy it man. I'm happy for you :)
At this point it is absolutely necessary for them give us an option for the old UI.
I hate the new one. TW UI has been complete garbage since Rome 2. And i am sure they will butcher Medieval 2's remaster in the same way by replacing the old UI.
Why did they do this?! There was no reason whatsoever to change the UI, it was perfect. There were so many other things that could have been improved upon.
@@transsylvanian9100 Its not perfect. It does the job, its way bigger than it needs to be though. TW UI has never been great, just good enough (I personally think Shogun 2 did it best, minimal, aesthetic and gives you all the info you need and its out of the way at the same time). You are just used to the old UI. The new UI from an aesthethic point of view is very bad though, very centered for whatever reason. It looks like a 4:3 picture on a 16:9 screen.
That one moment people say that Rome total 2 was "shit" and that the rome remastered would be the comeback of the franchising but it wasnt :/
Rome 2 and Rome remastered are both trash imo, in tradition of TW games.
I mean Rome 2 Total War is still very mediocre. Unfortunately they put even less effort into Rome Remastered than Rome 2, handing it off to some mobile game dev.
I never knew about the locked unit formation attack. I always thought Rome 2 had armies converge into blobs.
8:28 XD Loved that
I agree with the pathfinding, and with the UI for the most part. But, I think there's enough there for a "comeback story".

Funny enough Rome remastered was my second total war game (first being Troy) and I absolutely loved the mechanics and how everything worked once I figured out how to add more soldiers to my army so I’d stop accidentally only sending my general to fight half the gaulic army lmao. Something about the older total war mechanics are way easier for me to wrap my head around than the newer game mechanics. For some reason it’s a struggle for me to understand Rome II’s mechanics, but Rome remaster’s are so accessible to me

Thank you! It means a lot and good luck on your channel!
I’ll be honest I’ve been playing rome 2 for 1800 hours and I never knew you could do the locked formation attack, I would attack one by one in pause to get an organized attack like I did in Rome one,
I get your points too but I still love the game
I got the Remaster, and I'm enjoying it a lot, but at the same time, I wish it could have been more. Rome Remastered actually makes me appreciate Rome 2 a lot more.
I feel the exact same way. I enjoyed the campaign a lot, but I'm ready to go back to Rome 2 until patches come to Remastered.
Well I learned something new... about Rome II. I didn't know about the attack command feature where you didn't have to micromanage the units. I'm going back to Rome II.
It's not just in ROME II either, it's in all of the games from at least Shogun 2-onward.
Just an older Rome 1 and Medieval 2 player, what is so difficult about making the units group together, bring them to melee range and then order each of them to attack the unit in front of them? Seriously how much effort does it take? Clicking is too much now?? Same for the pathfinding and other "jank". If you learn the clicking rules and how to fit formations into cities, city battles go smoothly. It's a learn to play thing, though I would say that the extreme unit formations don't help (i think we should limit unit size to large at the max to avoid insane pathfinding problems.
I learned that too today lol. Time to see how you do it
i hope the remaster's comeback isnt 5 years late
Same!
Basically people who haven't played Rome 1 since they were 12 are playing it again and realising its a game from 2004 and feels like trash in battles. The nostalgia crew who continue to play it never did and don't care about the dodgy battles because they all play mods and just look at the pretty units and role play, which is fine but its not critical of the game. I almost feel like it would have been better recieved if they actually did less, and just made the original game fully optimised and compatible with modern systems with a few fixes and nothing else. But like all recent CA products this one tries to be two things at once, a remake and a remaster.
💯
That's why reMASTER, was a red Flag to me. It's not a reMAKE. It could be, it depends on the developers. But it's just a rePAINT
Big oof.
Thats not true. The developers have limited ressources. A remake needs much more time, money and workers, thats the job of the publisher. The developers did a great job.
@@ruas4721 Yeah, they should have gotten so much more. It's sad that such an iconic game got so little time and love from CA.
Wait... the battlegroups do what? Oh well, thanks for teaching me something new to use in my ongoing Sparta Campaign for Rome 2. Man, that actually makes my life so much easier instead of manually selecting each unit to attack each manually selected target. Sheeeeeeeesh.
So glad it helped man! I can't live without it now (obviously, based on how much I ranted in the vid lol).
I have a lot of love for Rome 1, and there are some positives in the remastered version, but unfortunately, the gripes about the remaster, leave me with a tragically familiar disappointment that I've had with CA ever since the release of Rome 2. {Yes I know this was re-made by a different company) The UI is good, better in some ways than the original, but its a remaster and they should of left the old UI in it so we could choose what we wanted. I think the scrolls droping down the right hand side at the beginning of the turn was just beautiful, and if you chose not to read them and ended the turn, They were lost to the annuls of history...instead theres the annoying tri-fector. The towns and cities, (in the battles) but the towns in particular should of just been enlarged by atleast a third of the size of the original, (if this could of been done) which I believe, would of sorted most of the pathfinding problems you have in town battles. I have tested the orignal with the remastered version and I disagree that the tinkering they have done to AI is an improvement, in a lot of cases it isnt. I could go on with the lists of disappointments but whats the point, this is what I've come to expect from a CA game, disappointment.
If they remaster medieval 2, what I would hope for is updated graphics, great sound, fix the bugs that were still in the game. thats it. Dont add your own mark to the game dont mess with the UI or even the AI if its not going to be a real improvement, and if you do, leave an option to let us, the players, to have the choice of using it or not. IMO it doesnt need an improvement, thats is why we want medieval 3.
Just found your channel, have to say, really enjoying your content :)
I bought it for the prettier graphics. That's it. It is still as janky as I remember it.
True Rome 1 enjoyer right here.
The greatest things were the traits, nicknames, general speeches and crazy flying soldier glitches
I know it's nitpicky, but one of the first things I noticed and still annoy me after 30 hours is that the cheer at the end of the generals speech is delayed a few seconds, it takes so much from the immersion when the General comes to the end of the speech, only to be followed by crickets chirping for 2 seconds to sink in with the army.
True!! Was it always like that?
@@happycompy nah it used to follow up immediately. a shame they messed it up
Nostalgia is a powerful feeling but it never lasts long
I agree with every single point you made about the campaign, the battles, the UI etc., but I totally disagree with your conclusions. Which is because I would weigh the points of criticism very differently.
1. This is easily the best Total War campaign experience since Medieval 2: Soldiers are not spellbound to generals, population is back, no building limitations, auto manage, taxation of individual cities, Rebel towns at the start of the game, territories can be traded etc.
2. Battles are not great, but also not bad, they are OK (for all the reasons you mentioned). You just have to get used to the old mechanics again and help the pathfinding a bit. In return, you get pre-Warscape battles that just look and feel so much better... And the AI is also OK. Apart from a few dropouts it flanks your phalanx, attacks from different directions if you try to block bottlenecks and a cavalry attack from behind and your army will be mercilessly routed.
3. The UI is not ideal, it needs getting used to, but after a few hours it is quite manageable.
This game is a solid 85/100 in my book.
Hey man, thanks for watching and for the detailed comment. Obviously I disagree, but it was interesting to see your take on it.
Modern game dev studios - not only their gameplay is almost non existant, what little they promise isn't delivered
I never used to think it was possible to screw up a remaster. Then this game and the old GTA remasters proved me wrong 😅
I must agree with almost everything said in this video except one thing , Rome 2 siege battles are not bad, they are freaking epic, after hours and hours of playing and watching them I still dont have enough

Never played the original, I got to turn 70 as the Julii and gave up after getting bogged down in gaul trying to reform my armies after the marian reforms while Spain and Briton hit me from all sides. Also in that time the Scipii never expanded out of Sicily and the Brutii never got a foothold in Greece. I can only speculate how big Egypt, Carthage and Armenia got in this campaign..................
That actually kinda sounds like an epic campaign not gonna lie.

The real questions is, is it worth as a base game with new upcoming mods? or is it better to keep the original plus mods?
I’m really enjoying Rome Remastered but I hope for other titles like Medieval and Empire we get actual sequels instead of remasters. Some parts of the game just haven’t aged well and a remaster wouldn’t fix that.
Still, I’d love it if Creative Assembly could take some of the features which hold up here (family trees, armies not tied to generals, more stuff to build in campaign) and combine them with the great battles we get in modern Total War titles. A synthesis of the things the old games did better and the stuff the newer games excel at.
Oh man. I actually feel this review. I bought the game few days before lunch and still play attila today. I played rtw back in the days and bought on steam few years ago and had a good time with it (500 hours). When I heard of the remaster, I thought it would be rtw+good graphics, which it is. However, as I still play attila, I noticed that the game was lacking many many features (also the intros of some factions have been remade 🤢). I feel like the old engine is just not suited for the modern day total war games. If only they could give it better path finding and give it back its old UI (the new one is horrible in my opinion) then it would be fine but now it's just meh
Also, sometimes you give an unit an order but it doesn't do it (hence why I had to restart the siege of Sparta 3 times before I could win )
I have started Cartage campain. They were buffed quite a lot, and I thought that I can finally win with romans. And than U have pkayed 2 siege battle... qnd quited.

lost a siege one time because my guys couldn't get through the gate at Capua. They just stood there getting slammed by Roman calvary and didn't fight back because they were "marching"

Honestly, in my non-important humble opinion, anyone who thought a *remaster* would be anything but an updated Rome, were always going to be disappointed. Its a remaster.
younger generation of gamers complains about everything xD this is a masterpiece, one of the best total war games and Turn based strategy games of all times, every video game has flaws, but this one does more things right than other "modern" TW games which are kinda shity
I can give you a list of petty accomplishments on a resume but in the end what will stand out are the big things.
Rome 1 has a lot of really good aspects but a lot of them are minor details like population and character traits. The game was great for its time but simply put many of the bigger things it just doesn't have. Rome 1 lacks world immersion which Attila and Rome 2 have with the faction diversity and realism (all are not great but Rome 1 egypt) It's Ai is bad, diplomacy is pathetic. I've watched a LegendTotalWar video where he made peace with the Sassanids in Empire Divided Rome 1 when his faction had 1 city left with 1 unit and being beseiged by 3 stacks of Sassanid armies.
Even regarding the combat system itself the game is different (not worse) then all the newer ones apart from Med 2, but if you are going to enjoy the combat of the old games, Med 2 is vastly superior in that regard as the AI is much more functional and the units feel like they have a bit better weight to them. There is a reason Medieval 2 stood the test of time while base game Rome 1 did not
Ok, this one will get a dislike from me. Formation locking? Haven't used it in any total war games. Path finding in sieges sucks, tho, that much I can agree. But UI is not that bad, alerts being divided into your empire alerts and then world wide alerts is just logical. Wait for a few patches and modding scene, also campaign is already better than Rome 2 lol
You're missing out on that formation locking feature! It's really great when playing 40 v 40 battles!
As I'm looking back almost 2 years later, i am still Loving Rome Remastered, having played 740+ hours of it so far. They released many quality of life updates to improve gameplay (but yes I know siege Battle pathfinding and AI can be goofy).
The main thing though are the updates they made to the game's modability. Basically all the old limitations are gone and there are some absolutely awesome mods out there. I myself even have had a lot of fun modding the game, which I wouldn't have been able to do to the same extent with the original Rome or even any other Total War game.
The game has definitely come a long way since release. Maybe it's time for an update video?
If I can't win a siege battle with autoresolve, the campaign is over
This video was a surprisingly much more balanced than what the title suggested. As an old school _Total War_ fan, I can understand where you're coming from.
Given enough time with future updates and mods, _Rome Remastered_ can really rise up to the occasion. If _Empire_ and _Rome II_ can be salvaged, I'm confident this game will too.
I'm right there with you hoping!
I think the developers made it very clear this was almost done entirely for modders. Seeing as this is the most moddable total war and it’s not even close. We’ll see where it stands in 6 months
If they fix it with mods and patches then med2 remastered will be possible?
I started the franchise with Medieval 2, so I didn't get any nostalgia from Rome 1 or remastered. I gotta thank you for the useful information in this video, keep it up 👍
This is kinda out of topic but i think what would be great for unit management would be "attack area" order for archers so they would shoot in the general selected area like a circle or something. It would help in sieges a lot in my opinion.
That sounds awesome
Keep the work up man, I only just found your channel and it's dope as bro!
7:55 **Nervously looks around because my main strategy is just Zerg rushing the best melee units into a of the enemy**
Hey if it works, it works.

HappyCompyTW Overall nice review, but I have to correct your statements regarding Three Kingdoms :
1) Population in 3K doesn't work like in Rome, in Rome, the population are actual people who pay taxes or get enlisted - if you don't have them you don't have a way to replenish/get new units/get more money. If you loot or exterminate a settlement for easy cash, don't be surprised if you don't have enough people to enlist in to your army in that village afterward. Everything else like buildings and what not is a modifier on that number - in 3K its exactly the opposite, meaning the population is the modifier and its the buildings which give you the income. Romes system is far better objectively because the features ties the battle and the campaign together, you play the battles so you can keep your units who aren't being able to be replenished everywhere alive and well or send them back to places where you have the population so you can keep you veteran powerful units.
2) Three kingdoms traits are triggered by random events, Rome's beauty was that the traits were a reflection of the life the character had, while not perfect that system worked far better than in most total war games by being both dynamic and player action based - Three Kingdom's traits are random, you can win a battle and exterminate a settlement and the next turn recieve with the character a pacifist trait. Even worse because of how powerful special characters are not getting them is just stupid and while for some people playing as famous characters sounds fun and exciting - for me and many others the beauty of the old Total War games was their sandbox nature - the fact you played with unknown characters which grew and developed with the player across the campaign made them unique and fun and memorable (especially thanks to the trait system), Three Kingdoms Troy and Warhammer killed that with Total War games.
p.s. There is plenty to love with 3K, it just could have been much better if CA did really go back on some aspects which were great while still doing many of hte improvements the game has.
Good writeup, I should have mentioned that 3k's population was different than Rome's and Medieval 2's in its functionality. Still, its existence is a step in the right direction! That's a shame about the traits in 3K. Even Rome 2, Attila, and Warhammer have action-triggered traits.
@@happycompy It's hard for me to say they are on the right path when they already were on the right path almost 2 decades ago (god I am old) ... but here is for a bit of optimism.
Anyway keep up the good work :)
Thank you!
"Rome Total War without fixes doesn't cut it anymore....." +1000
As someone who was totally satisfied with the Remaster because... I really just wanted to play a version of RTW that doesn't run like shit on modern hardware, I was worried about the clickbaity title but I'm glad I gave it a shot anyway. Honestly it's still my favourite total war game (and my first game in the series was Shogun 2), but there's no denying the pervasive jank. For my part, the QOL changes that were present was more than I even expected, but I concede it could have been amazing.
Such a balanced and reasonable take. Refreshing to read, like a glass of ice cold water on a hot summer day. Thank you for sharing and I'm glad you enjoyed the game :)
I’m curious, can you fight cross era battles?
As in fighting the western Roman Empire as the house Julii for example?
I hate new agent sending panel because in the original I could send an agent with one click on the map while in Remaster I need at least FOUR clicks and a brainstorm to understand how does this sh*t work and so for EVERY SINGLE ASSASSIN
LMAO your comment made me laugh.
0:46 and 2:43 archer shot like machine gun
1:21 Cavalry is inside a chao battle and can not run but some troops still flying out to the air
1:26 It is more easier to walk through the wall
2:56 Make some squats in waiting time to battle
8:28 What the HELL is this? The social distancing formation ?
8:42 Building look nice. But they block the troop to move
8:52 but what the heck are these
11:43 formation uncontrolable
This game is too much bugs.
How do I do the battle line thing for Rome 2? When I put them in a group and send them forward they don’t choose targets
2:56 Those soldiers were so hyped to attack the enemy that they forgot to use feet.
I don't have RTW Remastered, but Battle AI was always bad in RTW, exploited easily. Most especially in sieges, it gets silly as the AI struggles. The grouped formations thing? That's why for many years I was allergic to the idea of moving my army in one big mass because the games handled it poorly. RTW demanded more micromanagement of units. Even then there'd be some weird stuff, especially inside city walls.
Also, I still vividly recall Vanilla RTW was fun but it got stale. What really saved RTW back in the day to me were the mods. RTW was where Total War got a vibrant modding community. For me the best at the time was "Rome Total Realism" and "Europa Barbarorum" mods.
Nice little channel you have here, you just got a new suscriber lad
Much appreciated! I'm glad you're enjoying it :)
