- It's been many years since we've been back to Shanghai (where Peter was born) but we love going back each time to see his family and indulge in all the incredible food.

🌳 BOTANIC GARDEN 🌳
The Shanghai Botanical Garden was super impressive. The autumn foliage, beautiful and we were fortunate to experience the complex without any crowds. Our favourite area was definitely the conservatory and the incredible bonsai garden. Most people don't realise, but the concept and art of bonsai originated from China and in the garden there were so many beautiful bonsai to marvel over.

I've always thought of Shanghai as quite overwhelming, overpopulated, and polluted, but you guys showed us the underlying beauty and charm. Thank you, Peter and Yen ❤
Thanks Daryl 😊 Each time we go back to Shanghai it's changed that little bit more! We were so (pleasantly) surprised at how much less chaotic it was this trip too even compared to the last a few years ago. No more non-stop car honking throughout the day and night (some laws came into place for it and drivers can be fined for doing it excessively) so it's so much quieter and even more so with the majority of electric vehicles too! The next vlog will show another interesting side to Shanghai too 😊
I just came back from China a few weeks ago, and I went to Guangzhou and Shenzhen. Compared with the situation when I came there five years ago, it has changed a lot. China is changing and progressing every day. As they said, China has completed our 100-year development path in 30 years. So just ten years ago, it was still very polluted, but now it is quiet, orderly, polite and clean. Maybe five years later, when I go there again, it will be a new look.
It's always amazing to see the progress every few years ay and how much it's advanced in such a short space of time 👍 a lot of incredible places that you don't really get to see much of or at all in western media so it's always nice when we can share a bit of it with our travels 🙂 still many other places we'd like to eventually visit though 🤞🤞

Ahhh yeaaaaah!!! Grandmama Peter, Mama Peter, xiao long baos and Yen still gots it cranking out pull ups!! That’s a proper return from yt hiatus!! Glad Mama Peter was there to sort out the visa issue so we can have vlog 1 of 3 of Shanghai 🇨🇳! I’m especially keen on this series since Shanghai should be in my near future… Grandmama Peter is soooo cute ☺️… Glad you got to spend time with family and eat scrumptious food… and glad Sundays are back baby!! Yen would probably like me to share this. On her first set of chin ups s group of local Shanghai ppl came walking past and there was a lot of "waaaaaa" "woooaaah" "o she's pulling herself up" 😂 Good job Yen 😂
Peter forgot to add that there was also applause when I came down and so I took a little bow to everyone's apparent delight 😂😂😂 it was like a scene from a sitcom or something 😆 but a happy memory I think back on and chuckle 🤭
I contemplated this for quite a bit... and my first conclusion was if a bonsai was huge, it would be a big bonsai tree... but based on this: "the term should be reserved for plants that are grown in shallow containers following the precise tenets of bonsai pruning and training, resulting in an artful miniature replica of a full-grown tree in nature" I'd say Yen is correct... because a big tree wouldn't have to be pruned and trained to look like a big tree..it would just be... a big tree...
Yes, very impressive.. for a man or woman in their 30's (?).. Most of my friends cannot do a pull up, let alone 5... During my early years in LE, we had a physical test every 6 months which involved pull ups.. I was embarrassed how many could not do decent pull ups.. So yes, very very impressive! @@PeterandYen
@@PeterandYen bummed Shanghai will have to wait.. was gathering all the docs needed for my visa last night, and they needed my old passport and China visa in it from years ago.. which is all back in Korea. Part of the downside of traveling without a plan… plus from what I read, I think I have to go to the consulate where I have legal residency… not sure if that’s true though since I can’t get past step 1. Bummer… oh well.. still looking forward to your Shanghai vlogs to see what I can look forward to.

Awww man that's such a shame about Shanghai! Sounds like such a mission for your visa! No chance you can have your stuff mailed out to you or are you on the move you much can't really get it ay? It's ok.. the city only gets better so when you eventually can go who knows how great it'll be then 😁💪

We managed to make 3 vlogs while in Shanghai and then one recently back in NZ but our camera is currently with Fuji waiting to get fixed so may not get another chance to use it til we head overseas later this month 😅 there will be plenty of vlogs in 2024 though for sure 😊
If Yen is so freaked out by a tiny little cricket, then imagine how she must reach to wetas in the NZ bush :-)

Thank you! It was so beautiful and oh my goodness all the food we ate on that trip 🤤🤤 food in Shanghai is sooo good!
I think for that particular flight it helped that it was a night time flight (took off just before midnight!) But for me (yen) I also use "sea leg" pills to help with any motion sickness but it also makes me sleepy so it was just the perfect combo really 😆 also after having gone to Turkey which was over 24 hours journey for us, everything else feels short and/or manageable now 😂😂

While I was waiting to board my flight I saw you guys UA-cam notification. Welcome back, looks like you guys visited Shanghai during the autumn season because the colour is stunning. 💯 agreed, the bonsai garden is glorious with all the autumn colours and highlighted by the sunset. You need to show us more Shanghai specialty and unique food 😋

@PeterandYen I love autumn. The colour is just so majestic and the cool air is so fresh especially in the morning and mystic too if you're in the mountains. We are going to Japan for Christmas and NY. Currently in Japan right now and there are still autumn colours and warm temperatures in Osaka.

Great vlog and tip on the payment options! I’m guessing the pollution is a lot less since so many vehicles are electric! The food is making me want to book a trip to China!
Yea I reckon it's definitely gotta help! It's still not very clean air every day but it's noticably improved from previous years for sure. Ahhh the food was so good!! Unfortunately some of the best food was on non vlogging days 😅 but in our third and last vlog it features the famous hairy crab 🦀🦀😁
@@PeterandYen OMGoodness! I remember having the hairy crabs! My mother’s favorite as she’s from Hangzhou (not far from Shanghai). They were shipped to Vietnam during the early 1960s! Was the hairy crab expensive?
They're so good right? 😁🦀 We actually went to Suzhou just outside of Shanghai for them as they're famous the ones from yangcheng lake 👍👍 price was reasonable especially when you know the work involved too (you'll be able to see why in our final vlog for the year 😁)

As a kid growing up in NZ migrants were a big part of my life. Around Gisborne we had many chinese market gardeners and some of my mates were chinese.. But they looked chinese i deadset picked you as a cuz Maori bro 😂
