Exclusive visit to a Hairy Crab Farm near Shanghai (where the best 大闸蟹 are from)

- In our third and final vlog from Shanghai (and for the year) we head just out of Shanghai to Suzhuo's Bacheng, Yangcheng Lake area which is famous for their hairy crabs also known as mitten crabs or 大闸蟹 (da zha xie) in Chinese. These hairy crabs are an absolute delicacy not just in Shanghai but across China and we were visiting during the best time to have them.
Shanghai locals know that Yangcheng Lake is the hometown for the tastiest hairy crabs around and we were fortunate enough to be invited both inside the restaurant's kitchen and even taken out to the owner's private farm after lunch to get a real behind the scenes experience.

The restaurant is listed on Google maps (which you can't access without VPN in China) but the address and marker look wrong, so if you want to find this restaurant you'll need a Chinese map like Baidu map or enter it into your Didi ride hailing app. Copy and paste the restaurant name in Chinese to locate it. Good luck!

Merry Christmas guys 🎄. I am watching this video on Christmas day 😊. I have a trip down the memory lane with this video. I used to eat that snail, river or lake (they also found in rice field too) when i was a kid back in Vietnam. We cook it with lemon grass and lemon/lime leaves, and the dipping is fermented rice. Omg, I love those bat wings fruit (Vietnamese name is Trai au). It's my favourite childhood snack, simple steam or boil it and eat. Us Vietnamese love to dip the crab with lime salt and pepper. Our #1 dipping for grilled, charcoal, or boil crab 🦀. I am drooling watching u guys ate it. My favourite as always is mud crab n my family used to charcoal it for me to eat. Our backyard is a river. Thanks so much for sharing some of your culinary experiences in Vietnam. It sounds like it is very similar to what my parents experienced in China when they were younger.

@PeterandYen mY husband doesn't like Vietnam so we always opt other countries. However, we will go back one day when my children are older or at least they can look after themselves. I love all the snacks and street fruit in Vietnam, however my favourite is always Japanese ramen n Peking duck lol
Ramen and Peking duck are great choices 🤔 hard to think of an absolute favorite food... though Com Tam comes to mind 😁
@@PeterandYen I think I prefer bun that nuong (grilled meat with vermicelli over com Tam 😁. Oh, the alley where we met there is a Com Tam restaurant has been there for more than 30 years. We always ate there.

It's often a few years in between when we get to eat them too. Just a tasty treat that we look forward to every trip back to Shanghai. Hope you get to enjoy them at some point again too. N merry Xmas 😁🎄

Hiya 👋 since we were only there a short time we got roaming data and used a VPN to connect to UA-cam, Google etc. If you're using their wifi we found our VPN (Nord VPN) just wouldn't work and it's definitely blocked 😅
