I agree. I also did a quilt as you go in columns for a large bed quilt as my then current machine could not handle anything larger. I cut my sashing strips wider and then sewed those together once attached to my columns, used seam tape to join the batting pieces and then sewed my backing which was larger than the column in a stitch in the ditch from the front. You have to look closely to see the seams on the back. It worked and allowed me to quilt a large queen quilt on my small old machine.
