    Your face gives as much information as the (very convincing) commentary! It’s a real pleasure to see the smile! I keep thinking about an SL2-S but need to save up some pocket money first. This is a really helpful video. Thank you.

    When I first handled the SL at the Leica Store when they came out my reaction was, "no way, this is huge!" But things change I guess... I picked up mine 6 months ago, and much like you, I am overwhelmingly thrilled with this camera. The weight and size don't bother me at all (long strap across the chest and camera to the side/back), has a great solid feel, simple to use, but with all the information and control I need. And yes, focusing can actually be more accurate when using it with my vintage M-series lenses than a Leica RF camera. Also enjoying my late 1950s Takumar lenses on the SL for their beautiful 'look' and have a few pluses; with their preset aperture ring (free turning), close focus, and can be a very low cost these days.

    Matt, you'll be blown away by the quality of your portraits shooting with this SL. The weight with SL lenses is sometimes a bit too much and that makes me use Voigtlaender lenses more and more. Always nice to see you happy and excited 😀🙃 I totally share your experience.
    I am using the SL (601) for a couple of months now. It’s great! I am using it with a Summicron 50mm f2. This is my favorite camera setup currently.
    After using mostly analog cameras for the last few years, I now feel a little overwhelmed by the cost, time and complexity. So it’s a joy to shoot the SL. It also feels great in the hands, since I prefer heavier cameras in general. The weight is no problem when walking around.
    Even though it’s pretty big, it does not seem to intimidate people when shooting street portraits.

    I tend to do my best documentary work with my Leica M9, which I've had for over ten years. The S5 joined the stable last month to shore up some of the M9's weaknesses, like high ISO performance, burst rate, and lack of video mode. I certainly understand the identity crisis of using non Leica after building an emotional investment as a 'Leica shooter', it's just something I'm coming to terms with. To be honest, one reason I have the S5 is because a SL2-S is out of budget right now.
    As for manual focus, I've found that if I hit the Focus Magnify button on the back while raising the camera to my eye, and turn the lens on the way up, all I have to do is achieve critical focus then press the shutter button.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 роки тому +3

      Thanks yes the S5 is a strong performer for sure. It’s partly because I’m client facing as a Leica guy and I do still like the Leica EVF MF better (I knew as had the CL already). S5 still works ofc.

    Thanks for making this video. I've recently come to a similar conclusion that the SL system is a superior tool for digital work, although for film nothing beats a Leica M. Had several sleepless night going back and forth between repurchasing another SL or stepping up to SL2s, lol. BTW - The infinity (horizontal) RF adjustment is a really easy DYI fix. I recommend giving it a try if you haven't already. Close focus adjustments definately requires a certified technician though.

    I've been shooting Leica since the 90's and have had an SL for about 3 years and an S for over 5 years. I'm holding onto both. I did sell a Q and got a Sigma fp and several M lenses- 1 old Summicron and 2 newer Voigtlander. I think the SL has advantages over the SL2 and the SL-S in that I like the metal grip and not having IBIS or a touch screen. My current favorite is my fp with Voigtlander lenses. Buying an SL is a sound decision.

    I love my SL for all the reasons you outlined, but also for its flexibility. I can put on a Voigtlander 75 f1.5 for portraits and the sheer pleasure of using the lens, or I can use zoom auto focus glass when the need arrises. However, it is big and if Leica would produce an interchangeable Q with a L Mount, I would buy one instantly, especially if it had an EVF I could tilt up.

    Thanks for your review, Matt.
    Here are my conclusions, based on this vid. I use Typ601 for an everyday shooting with an AF glass. This is a truly amazing cam with paramount design aesthetics and image quality.
    @) There is no perfect camera. I recently saw a nice comparison between M10R black paint edition and d850, with d850 beating it to a punch image quality-wise (to MY taste).
    @) There are always a decent reasons to pick some other system. Having too much options due to whatever isn't a good thing, it is really a breeding ground for doubts - a powerful distractor from doing actual image taking.
    @) Lumix S5 is an excellent IBIS+, BSI+, good AF camera. With not being a Leica as a major downside.
    @) No amount of info would prevent us from GAS, we've got to experience it to have a chance overcoming it, perhaps (:

    Outstanding explanation between the differences and frustration between the m and the sl. I have started looking at Leica as I currently shoot Sony, Nikon and Fuji, so I want to know about that Leica magic from owners and I thank you for this. I would also like to add, you were not a fraud for bringing a Panasonic. Sometimes we all have a tendency to get to caught up in gear and brands.
    You brought the Panasonic because it was the best camera for the job and never get caught up in titles, like Mr. Leica or Matt Granger’s old title of that Nikon Guy. I think part of the reason for feeling like a fraud is because you attached your self to a brand so much that you thought that others saw you that way and couldn’t see you any other way.
    The camera companies by in large only care that you buy their product, not about who you are as a person. If you knew a lot about Harley Davidson motorcycles or Rolex watches, it wouldn’t make you that Harley guy or that Rolex guy. You are a photographer and teacher that uses Leica as a preference as Matt Granger uses Nikon as his. Based off of your video, if I buy Leica, it will be the SL series as I have no desire to send parts back to the manufacturer every 18 months. Keep up the good work and content.

      Hi Matt!!
      Do you have an opinion on the Leica MA film camera? I had been looking around and using your site to review maybe getting a M4-P.
      However, I just discovered I"m getting a good bit of money back on taxes, and I found a good deal on the MA camera. I like the looks of it (looks like my M10M, with stealth mode).
      I've not found any of your videos talking about the MA....or the MP which is pretty much the MA with a light meter and glossy paint.
      I'm of the thought that I'd like to get the best and newest Leica film camera, fully mechanical that I can. That this will long outlast any of the recent digital sensor bodies, and that newer is better, for less wear and tear.
      Thoughts on this in general and any specifics on the MA?
      Thank you in advance,

    I'm glad you like your SL, but it amazes me that there isn't a technician in your own country who can recalibrate an M rangefinder vs. sending it off for a 2-month vacation in Solms. Back in the '60s RF calibration was practically a walk-in service in any major city, and all the manufacturers designed their cameras so the RF could be adjusted without disassembly. Go ahead and call me a grumpy boomer, but this doesn't seem like progress!

    I bought my SL (601) January 2020 to digitize my M-glass. Since then, I have reluctantly sold my mint M4-P and all its glass. With an SL and CL, I am very happy with two 24MP cameras that share the L-mount. The SL is a tremendous value. Have you noticed since its introduction as the flagship, the SL-line has become the value option compared to the M cameras?

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  3 роки тому

      Thanks JK! I would not say they aim the SL line as the value line no, I think they use it to offer FF mirrorless and more of a DSLR style shooting experience with very high performing big lenses + zooms vs Ms & RF lenses. SL lenses are certainly not value! :)

    • @jklphoto
      @jklphoto 3 роки тому +1

      Hey@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaComto clarify, when introduced in Oct. 2015, the SL was $7500 USD, whilst the M typ 262, introduced a month later in Nov 2015, was "only" $5195. At launch, Leica priced the SL (601) higher due to its many superior features and advanced technology. Subsequent M-camera releases have flip-flopped that paradigm and far surpassed current SL camera pricing. That's what I define as value.
      It seems Wetzlar figured out there were deeper pockets for their ancient RF "technology" and are taking full advantage of those willing to pay $8995 USD for a body and $8195 for the new Leica APO-Summicron-M 35mm f/2 ASPH. Regarding lenses, the SL lenses are certainly no bargain, but adapted M-glass from Zeiss or L-mount options from Panasonic and Sigma make very usable alternatives.

    Human or nature street or portraiture ... Composition is in my opinion 90 % of the art. You can have hyper sexual or classical model , but place them in a bad composition or photograph the human form in the wrong way ; you cheapen the form and the image.

I think M's are said to be designed to be a bit more Leica looking (filmic/less digital) but i've not noticed. The SL is a joy to use and as you can use any lens unless you want the M rangefinder experience then get the SL and pair with older lenses to get the look. I've done a few shoots with my old Leica lenses on mirrorless Canon EOS R and was very happy with the quality... what I found inconvenient though is the aperture control. Focus peaking/magnification works well at full aperture but it's not so easy to judge the exact point of focus when stopped down. Are you shooting wide open all the time? If you wanted to shoot at say f/2.8 would you just focus at f/2.8 or focus at full aperture and stop down to take the shot? I kind of expected the extra depth of field to help at f/2.8 but it doesn't really! (I'm talking about shooting with an Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5 by the way.... its sharp in the centre at full aperture but in compositions where the eyes are towards the edges of the frame it does need stopping down a bit.

On the other hand, Leica L mount lenses on a SL seem for me, to be a step back from where I have been, this and last year using Q & M compact cameras. Funny that the LUMIX S5 packed up. I’ve been wondering why there are a huge number of used / barely used S5’s on sale everywhere. I’m glad I waited since Panasonic’s customer care is predictably appalling. The list of faults with this camera seems to be infinite. If only Panasonic could sort these issues out, put the S1 viewfinder in it and adopt a better attitude to its customers I would buy one without question. You never said anything regarding the often reported poor battery life in the Leica SL and the idiotically high price of these batteries. I have been waiting for SL prices to stabilise but the battery issue might nag at me too much for me to relax enough to use the camera. A few comments on your experience with battery life would have been welcome. The Leica CL looks good but is too expensive for a non image stabilised camera. So manual lenses are a non starter, unless I want a headache. Again the CL lenses are over priced especially since they are probably made by Fuji. The Leica M11 only proved the point that rangefinder systems are pointless and inaccurate, but the fondle factor is high with Leica rangefinders. I would like to play with a Leica SL but that involves a nine hour return journey by car. Maybe just stick with my Rolleiflex shooting black and white film only. I can’t afford colour film now.

    I am a professional filmmaker. I acquired my skills from an Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominee (Oscar), my father (Best International Film). Your claiming a faulty Lumix causing the video to stop is clearly false. It has been edited so to cause that impression. By doing so, you are underestimating your viewers' degree of knowledge and amount of grey cells in their brains. Cheap, dirty and amoral. Leica products are universally acclaimed for their overall quality and need not to play under-graded marketing pushes. Leica and Panasonic Signed a Strategic Comprehensive Collaboration Agreement to Develop together a "L2 Technology". The new Lumix S5 IIX is the 1st camera out of such agreement. Not as nicely outer finish as a Leica but a Leica inside out. By the way, not the 1st time. A number of previous popular Leica cameras were made by Panasonic. Precisely the same camera marketed in different names. Please stop being silly, you're an adult already.

    Hi Matt! I am about to buy a M10-R with two current state Leica M lenses. I want full frame, Leica and to travel as light as possible.
    Now you have unsettled me. Does your focus problem exist mainly because you shoot with vintage lenses, and especially at close range?
    I shoot landscape, street and architecture. Portrait is rather an exception for me.
    I have no rangefinder experience. What would you advise me to do? M10-R or SL2-S? The M lenses have been decided.

    • @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
      @MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Ralf, sorry for my late answer. Hopefully I caught you in time. If you have no RF camera experience you’ll probably find the SL2-S much more familiar. No the focus issue will affect every lens, the best APO lenses or a cheap Soviet LTM mount lens. If you bump a Leica M camera hard enough after that you may not have accurate focusing until you get the camera fixed again. If you are “out in the field” and want a bomb proof Leica that you don’t want to worry about get the SL series cameras. If you are buying the R for the higher MP then consider the SL2 also so you get the same resolution as the R body. I continue to love my SL + non-SL lenses. More videos will follow. @@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, I just want to let you know that I bought an M11 and the Visoflex 2. And I’m very happy with that. I take 90% of my images with the rangefinder and only the 75mm and longer with the EVF. It’s a pricy solution 😩 but nevertheless I’m in love with it.
      One question to the focusing. I noticed that the focusing my 35mm and 21mm lenses with the rangefinder is noticeable more precise than with the EVF and the focus peaking. I think it’s caused by a higher tolerance for the focus peaking. The EVF already indicates that something is in focus. But in the rangefinder you can see exactly that this is.not the case. Can you confirm this?
