The OG SL is such an amazing deal right now. For less than the price of a canon you can get a genuine Leica camera. we're in a golden era! Thanks Matt !!! and the native SL glass is just... format transcending . ...
After much debate I sold off some gear and picked up an original SL and adapter for my Leica R lenses. I love the results with this camera and the feeling using the manual focus lenses. It's such a great balance of user experience and fantastic image quality. I"m excited to bring it on my trip to the UK next month. Thanks for the channel it's been a great resource.
Thanks Bob and congrats on your new setup. Yes a very rewarding piece of kit. It makes me want to shoot so that's always a good thing. Enjoy your trip!
Having purchased the original SL on the advice of a noted English model photographer I can say that I’m quite pleased with this version. I haven’t used any of the newer ones but the original ticks all the boxes for me. The built in GPS is a nice feature and the ISO down to 50 is definitely a plus. I don’t care about image stabilization so that’s not a concern. I use my SL with an assortment of vintage and M mount manual lenses. I’ve thought about getting an autofocus lens or two but for me the fun is having that M experience a without being in a rangefinder camera. I love manual lenses. They work very well on the SL. Also, I don’t know how much better the EVF can be…the SL is amazing. The only gripe I have with the SL is it’s not as good as newer cameras in darker scenes or at night. For those shots I usually carry around my A7Rii. The biggest win for me with the SL is the price. At 1600-2000 they are a much more affordable way into the world of Leica than the M digitals or the newer SLs. And as far as megapixels. I find that 24 works great for me. Lastly, I read somewhere that the original SL actually produced the best images. That sensor is magical. Thanks for yet another great review Matt.
I have all three and use the original the most as I prefer it’s default colors (they’re all surprisingly different) and rarely need the high ISO or increased resolution of the newer models. Besides there is software to help substantially in both areas. If I did more video it likely be different, but original users should be happy.
@ricblessing3400 that's good to hear. I looked at the newer ones but with the almost doubling of price I decided against it. Would rather look for a deal on a CL. As they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
I own a Leica SL2-S, and I love it. 24 Megapixels is enough resolution for me and I do sometimes benefit from the better low-light performance. But the SL2-S has no phase autofocus. The new Panasonic Lumix S5 Mark II has it, and I guess this is one of the improvements for the upcoming Leica SL3. The SL2-S is also not heavier than a Leica SL2. Probably, you have mixed up the weights with and without battery.
Great. Yes the SL3 will be like the S5II/Q3 I think. Thanks about the weight. I used multiple website sources including Leica to try to get accurate info so sorry about that. I will check and correct for the blog post.
Just want to say something about all the SL cameras that I’ve never seen mentioned - the strap. Such a simple accessory that made a difference for me. When I was deciding on the used SL vs M10, size and weight was a major factor. And, my first impression of the SL was it was a strong no-go for an everyday to carry with me. The strap design changed that. Longer length, nicely padded where it needed it but minimal otherwise, and curved body contoured. With the over the shoulder and across the chest and back so it hangs at the side, it takes the weight off and although still larger than an M-series puts it out of the way and easy to bring up and quickly available. Strap length adjusted properly also brings some tension at the eye-level shooting position for steady lower shutter speed exposures. With the M-series lenses I use the SL also isn’t all that huge as it may seem. Still no M-series, but the extra functions, and the 1/2 price difference (SL vs M10) compensate for advantages.
Another great video Matt and always interested to hear your perspective. I bought the SL2-S when it was launched and it’s one of the best pro cameras I’ve ever used, period. I love the colours and the low-light performance is truly astonishing. I don’t do any video but I’m told that’s good too. All of my commercial work is shot on the SL2-S. I’m intrigued about the SL3 but TBH, the SL2-S is my absolute workhorse and it’s built like a tank. I don’t like the size and weight of SL zooms, so I mainly use M lenses wherever possible, but for commercial work when size doesn’t matter the zooms are pretty good. The 50 APO SL lens however, has got to be hands down the best 50mm lens I’ve ever used. Paired with the SL2-S, it’s outrageous.
Thanks Rod! I did a video on the SL 50. It did give very nice results from memory. Yes I'll likely get a SL2-S at some point (mostly so I have video with me too).
The first SL had these nice 4 buttons around the display which had double functions when pressed short or long, I loved it. What made me often prefer the A9 was the weight. AF on the SL was yes, slower, but when nailed, then perfect. Also noise with high ISO and low light looked much better on the SL. I sold the SL and still have an A9.
Thanks Matt. Watching your videos over the last few days. Has changed my mind I wanta great 50 mm lens to go with my SL 2s . I was planning to buy a used leica 50 mm f2 suma. From MPB …the cheaper smaller SL lens version that just came out while selling my Sigma 65 mm and 45 mm lens to help pay for it. But after watching several of your videos I think I’m gonna go ahead and keep the sigma lenses and buy, the 50 mm light lens Elkon Because it just seems so much more interesting. It seems to produce beautiful photos. I’m one of your Patreon supporters and I really value all of your work. So thanks a lot for your help.. and have a wonderful Christmas.
For a user that wants to use more longer telephoto lenses, third party at first with IS, which would you recommend? Eventually I would want to move to some Leica options.
Just an update on my previous comment re autofocus on the sl2s.Recentley bought a dedicated lens the 24 -70.Previously i`d been using my TL lenses and a 70 /200 Pany ,The 24/70 seems ,at least so far.to be a marked improvement as regards the focus accuracy and speed. I need to put more miles on it but I`m hopeful.
If all the cameras were the same price I'd get the SL2-S for the IBIS, low light, better video. All 3 cameras are great with vintage lenses. If you don't need the mod cons save money and get the original SL like I use.
Thank you. That was a great video. Very clear, very well done. Your portraits, however, are the best. They'll keep your viewers coming back. My one complaint about the Leica SL cameras is that they're ugly. Is there a way to quantify "ugliness." No, but I think the Leica M-series cameras are beautiful, and I think the Leica R8 and R9 were beautiful. Willy Messerschmitt would love Leica's SL series.
Like button “smashed.!” This is useful information. Thanks! Thus far, I am using my “team” of M10 and M Type 246 cameras. I foresee the potential of eventually adding an SL-series camera, rather than a newer M-series camera.
Great video!!! Consulting...I am thinking to make an upgrade from Leica SL, to Leica SL2, or SL2s. use for wedding photography. SL colors are excellent!!! is it necessary in your opinion? If yes, which kind of model you suggest! Thanks in advance Sebastiano from Italy
Thanks! If you crop in post the SL2 is useful for more MP, if you like 24MP the SL2S. People say the SL still has the best colours but you decide from the video results.
Good video Matt. About the SL3 I can tell you that it will come in 2024 not in 2023. My source, Math from Zurich, has inside info from Leica and in an earlier discussion he revealed that to me. Don't forget to mention that the Leica SL prime lenses are the best Leica lenses made, word from the Leica lens designers as seen/heard in a podcast on the Leica America site, and that are not the cheaper Panasonic Leica rebrand ones, but the real deal Apos. Have a nice weekend.
"best lenses" depends on what you want from a lens. Even if you only look at optical performance alone, lenses like the Apo-Summicron 28 have terrible distortion (looks like a fisheye) and rely heavily on digital corrections. Thats far from being the "best". I prefer a Summicron-M 28, or even better, a Elmarit M 28 with almost zero distortion any day! Besides that, IMO being "best" includes handling and usability, which is horrible on SL lenses. I know what Peter Karbe says, but to me SL glass is not the "best".
3 differences points of the SL vs SL2 and SL2-S. 1. The SL has built-in GPS. Was it a cost savings, or just a no hump cosmetic thing? I find it useful when I’m just doing casual JPGs and importing to APPLE Photos and need to find a group of images at a location, and that hump doesn’t bother me. 2. The lug strap design. The SL has body flush lugs. Don”t get caught on anything, smooth on the hand. Why did they change the design? 3. The original 4-button layout. Seems the SL was such a new well thought out designed modern camera and the large bars 4-button layout was part of that (and looks cool all non-labeled blacked out with no future white paint wear). Did Leica just standardize 3-button because it is same as the M-series? And, which is ‘better,’ or just a matter of getting use to either?
Ah ,,, I see, thank you for that. Its a shame because otherwise its a lovely camera. I use mine for equestrian work but it misses focus . Its not reliable. OK for everything else though.@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
Excellent video and comparision .... I'm still in love with my SL2S even if i do have some other cameras to play with... It is my go to camera for AF and interchangeable lenses (AF and M)
Hmm, but doesn’t the new Nikon Zf change the game entirely for the potential of using Leica (or any other) lenses? IBIS with any manual lens, pixel shift, cheaper, etc.
@@AIP404I’ve had no problems with autofocus M and autofocus LTM lenses on my Nikon Z8. All the 3D matrix object dynamic eye tracking AF at wide open apertures. Not to mention the AF video capabilities with vintage lenses. The Zf is an anachronism with nice brass dials but no dummy advance lever thumb rest like the brilliant one that Leica put on the M10-D. The Zf is just too fat/thick with bad ergonomics.
Hi first thank you, I believe the Leica SL2-S will be better; but when the new Leica SL3 come out it will be have the same sensor so you will be able to go form 60mp-36mp-18mp which would nice. I believe the price for Leica SL3 will $7500 to $8000. more of the lesser, it may have some the same fee shore of the Q3, only time will tell. I need to know is there a big different between the older 90mm F2.0 and the 90mm ASPH 55mm filter, please let me know?
Thanks, yes I think the SL3 is going to be popular! 90 Pre vs 90 APO the APO is sharper (see that video.. but not a massive difference. I think the non-APO (that looks like the APO) will be in the middle.
I am having issues with the SL connection while tethering into CaptureOne. It will say the camera is connected but imagines sometimes do not come through. Sometimes it will drop connection completely. If anyone has figured out a solution, please let me know. Thanks for the video Matt!
Hi Matt, love your videos! Your passion for the cameras is obvious! I'm looking to get the original SL as a way to get into the Leica eco system! I was thinking of using the small sigma primes for street photography. Would this be a bad idea ? I know there is a bit of a heft to them ? I was thinking the smaller lenses might balance that out a little ?
Hi thanks! Haha yes I'm a geek :). Yes the SL is awesome as are the Sigma DG DN lenses. Size won't be an issue but AF in bad light will be less good vs SL2-S. The SL is best for MF lenses but does work for AF. I use single shot, single spot AF and it's fine, just don't expect eye detect auto everything!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom thanks Matt, yes I would only really use single point AF so shouldn't be an issue 😁 you might have convinced me to pick one up 😁😁
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Hi Matt, I have a quick question if you don't mind. I have the s5 now to get myself into the L mount system. Is the SL shutter sound quieter than the s5 ? I'm finding the s5 quite loud and a few people noticed me while doing some street photography yesterday.
Is it just my copy or is original SL EVF kind of always dark? (sometimes it even looks darker than rear LCD....) I can't really find any control for EVF brightness in settings.
Someone else mentioned that and I was not sure what they were talking about as my finder is big and bright and so easy to use. No sure what to say. (I use PASM mode in daylight).
For me it’s the SL2, for the 47MP and because I no longer have to produce videos. The SL2 is a great partner for my M10R. Question for you Matt, I have the Leica M to L adapter and use with my M lenses, I have several vintage Nikon and Canon lenses that I use on my M10R with adapters, is it better to purchase Nikon (or Canon) to L adapters or is it fine to add the Nikon lens with it’s M adapter onto the SL2 with M to L adapter? I have tried it several times and seams to work just fine, what do you think. Once the SL3 arrives I may trade both M10R and SL2 to move over to the SL3.
Hi Matt .... Nice video and very timely I might add. I am completely sold on the SL system for its simplicity and viewfinder and so far I like the SL2S for its low light performance and now I question the need over all those megapixels when improvements can be made in post production. I am doing my best to be patient to see what the SL3 brings to the table and then I'll make my decision as pricing on the SL2s should get better.
This year has been a drab for new camera launches. However the year 2024 promises to be a exciting year for new camera launches, for a start Cannon will be launching the R1 and the R5ii, Sony will be launching the A1ii, Leica will be launching M11P, and SL3.
Thanks Matt for the great video. I was planning to get the Sl2s but after watching your video and checking the article you linked I going more towards Sl2 HOWEVER I think I will wait till the SL3 is out which I hope should be released by beginning of next year and then decide either for it or get the Sl2 which should hopefully get a bit cheaper. All depends on what the SL3 has to offer. I think they will just add the articulating screen and the 61 Mp , but I hope they do more than just that. What do you think?
Thanks! Definitely wait for better prices, once the SL3 launches. (Or then get the SL3 if you need all the added features etc). I think it will be similar to the Q3/Lumix S5IIX.
Great question. I have tested a few of the Leica Mono cameras, M10M and Q2M (see videos) but I can get better B&W from colour + my presets. Weird I know as I shoot B&W film happily. (Also sometimes clients need colour*)
I love using my SL (Typ 601) with all of my manual focus lenses. It is the most versatile camera I ever used with the best image quality for my FX lenses. Of course it performs better with my Nikkors as my Nikon D4 did and has way better colour reproduction. I also prefer the user interface over the SL2's. The four button system is a clever design with superb customization options. The built-in GPS sets it on par with my Hasselblad H cameras which both have the optional GPS unit attached. The only bad thing about the SL system is the horrible Leica Fotos app which simply doesn't work. The SL only works flawless with the older SL app on old smartphones.
Great! I'm glad you love them too. Yes new SL users that came from Nikon/Sony instantly love the proper colours! I never use the app so noted. I shoot film still so taking the card out the camera to upload the photos is fast enough for me haha.
I think the most significant reason for getting a Leica is the color science. From this aspect this video did not contain very much besides the very brief look at one photo near the beginning. I am not sure that potential Leica buyers need to be told the basic specifications, is that really useful?
Thanks Peter, yes people coming from Sony, Canon etc seem to love Leica colours. I guess i'm used to them after 10 years of it but I remember struggling with Nikon colours in the past. Lots of other videos show lots of sample photos, this was more to see how they compare. Leica cameras always give good colours so the model doesn't matter too much in that regard.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I understand what you were showing, I was just hoping for more insight into the differences there are between the 3 SL cameras regarding the colour rendering of each model. I think more people would be inclined to make their choice based on colour science than specifications. Perhaps I am alone in this thinking. Personally, I have not yet found a video that seriously analyzes the difference between how these cameras render the same scene, looking at secific colour rendering differences, (and contrast) especially in the shadow and highlight detail. Leica colour is special, and exactly how each camera renders Leica colour, to my mind, is the most interesting and significant feature.
@@PeterbFree thanks Peter, I noticed the differences shown but I only had all 3 cameras a short while so not enough time for extensive shootings. If I get a chance in the future I will.
Man I’m trying really hard to old off for a SL3. But the 2000$ off right now it’s making it hard. Plus got a full CL kit for trade in. By the unknown of focus system is scary to me. I’m a Sony shooter(A1)
SL type601 is best camera,cheap and you can use another type lens(PK-L,F-L,EF-L,M42-L,M-L,R-L),and SL 28 35 50 75 90 aa is very good lens.尤其是SL type601的直出颜色非常漂亮,好过SL2和SL2s。
Hey Matt At this late stage I wouldn’t buy the SL2 or SL2 S It’s probably only a few months away before the SL3 is released and the price of the two current models will drop substantially, also the disappointing features such as slow autofocus, fixed back screen and slow memory cards etc will be addressed All the very best
Which is one reason to love them otherwise just buy a Sony. I moved from Sony to Leica for those reasons. Floppy back, tracking subjects and a million fps is not photography
@@jensruckert4763 there is no point having a camera which is built and heavy like a brick and is the most expensive camera body on the market but performs like a canon or Nikon did three generations ago The native German lenses are far too heavy and expensive As they are not collectable and drop in value with time, if wasn’t for the prestige name why would you buy it over the competition?
I have 2 Sl2-S for work and absolutely love them. I shoot mainly available light and the low light level performance is astonishing. Rumour is that the SL3 will be a hybrid with the ability to shoot at different Megapixels so you have the SL2 and SL2-S capabilities
a 40+ megapixel Leica with phase detect AF and some Panasonic style video features might just be the ticket to get some photographers on board. I've been struggling to find a camera brand I really like. I've tried Canon, Fuji, Panasonic, and Sony. I like Sony and that's what I'm on right now but I'm just not inspired by the images or lenses in any way. I didn't like the Canon RF lens selection so I didn't stay there long. Fuji is a disaster with their poor lens selection, inconsistencies in lens AF performance, and no full frame. I really liked the Panasonic S5ii but it didn't tether into my preferred program Capture One and I really wanted higher megapixels. I think a SL3 and a higher resolution Panasonic with phase detect AF would be the dream team for photo and video. Leica would be main for photos with Panasonic as backup and then vice versa for video.
Thanks yes I think many people are waiting for the SL3! I'm happy with 24MP so I'll probably move from the SL to the SL2-S at some point so I can shoot video too. I have the S5 but I only use it for video. Not very inspiring but works.
Cautionary tale here. One of my Leica SL2-s's failed on a job last week. I had it just over 2 years. I use mine, i dont look at them in a cabinet , but to fails after 2 years is not great. Its been sent to Germany. Apparently I could have registered for another years warranty but checked my email and nothing from them advising that. The "system Error" is a complete failure of the shutter and mainboard. This is a £6k camera thats has completely failed and Leica shrug their shoulders and ask for a lot of money to repair it. Ive had Nikons go for 4 years and 750,000 actuations and still working fine, yet this thing has failed after just over 2. I was hesitant when I bought these as I needed a workhorse, and the sales guy said the shutters are like tanks, clearly not.
Sorry to hear your experience. I must admit one of my Patreon had to send an SL2-S back to Germany too. I've not heard of issues with the older models but yes that's poor and I know the customer service is usually slow so it's a double whammy. I always pack 2 bodies just in case, even since my Nikon days. (Nikon F series were shown to easily outlast Leica R cameras from the same period).
Luckily I had my other SL2-S body but the CS really is not great. Customer service in London did not reply however I must give a shout out to Leica store Manchester where I bought them as they gave me a loaner and have really tried to help I ended up now buying a CL as a back up to my other 2 bodies as if it can happen to one you never know. It’s been a really bad experience tbh. Having extolled the advantages of the Leica to the few that follow me and how I love shooting with the camera to now have this happen makes me wonder whether my judgement was foolish With Nikon the CS was always there, with Sony nothing, Canon was also great and you would have expected Leicas to be great too but alas that’s just not the case
@@Dpul945 Leica CS used to be better. London in the past loaned me cameras when mine was sent off to Germany and they cleaned your sensor/ made you coffee while you went in to window shop. I know all companies need to make a profit but I think for premium brands the service cost should be built it. (Volumes are much lower than Nikon so it’s hard to compare but I hear all the stories with having the blog and channel). When they work they’re excellent. Great choice on CL small backup. Gives more reach too.
Matt it is beyond outrageous that a high-end luxury brand such as Leica has poor quality-control of their own products; it seems that quality-control generally has deteriorated since the days of analog cameras. I don't expect you to reply to this.@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Nah. I'll stick with my M10 for M mount lenses and the rangefinder experience, if I like the Zf, I will probably stick with Z mount. The Zf is considerably smaller than the SL cameras - I find the SL bodies just too massive.
Interesting ... I have a D850 with a bunch of lenses (the newest 70-200mm being my favorite) but so far I have had little interest in the Z system. I really like what the SL system brings to the table with its simplicity and fabulous viewfinder. I will be shooting exclusively M glass in manual mode. Heck, almost like shooting with my M3. 🙂
@@crissignori7482 Well, the excellent viewfinder is basically the main selling point of the SL system - AND the optimization for M mount lenses. Auto-focus? Not so much. I guess we have to wait for the SL3 to see phase detect auto-focus at Leica after Panasonic tosses it over the fence to them. Other than build quality, the viewfinder and the M mount optimization, Leica isn't really innovating. I am looking forward to 7-8 stops of IBIS in the Zf - another thing we will not see with Leica unless Panasonic gives it to them.
i have to admit i am tempted to make my digital leica not an M but an SL. access to my nikon and canon vintage glass it too tempting not to consider it.
Yes, the SL is great with Nikon glass. I'm ex-Nikon so still have Nikkor lenses (even the 200 f2 AIS!). Get the M if you love RF and plan to use native M lenses, get the SL if you love playing with lots of lenses and need a platform to give you the most fun and ease of focus.
I had a Q2 Monochrom (regrettably sold it), and miss it dearly. Great form factor (feels good in the hand), excellent lens, easy macro capability, good weather-dust sealing, and excellent EVF. The Q3 is even more feature laden (e.g., flip-screen), and having the rear panel buttons on the right will likely make it easier to use. I had the Q2 handgrip too and liked using it.
My favorite Leica SL is the Canon R6 Mk II - because I can't detect any reasonable argument speaking for those overpriced Leicas. The image quality what comes out of my Canon is comparable with the Leica's - but I get it at a much lower price, and with a much better autofocus. The sensor of the Canon delivers the same dynamic range and the same low light capability as the SL2-S. So what?
Thanks Mark, yes most modern sensors give a similar look. Most Ex Canon, Nikon, Sony shooters much prefer the Leica colours but you can fix colours in post. I just tested a new Nikon and I could get similar results for less money. Unless you’ve used a Leica other brands offer great value. Once you’ve used a Leica people rarely go back.
The OG SL is such an amazing deal right now. For less than the price of a canon you can get a genuine Leica camera. we're in a golden era! Thanks Matt !!! and the native SL glass is just... format transcending . ...
Thanks and totally agree!

Great x2! Congrats George, I did some developing last night too!
Same here, SL with adapted glass is perfection.
Thanks Peter! ..and I'm glad that I finally persuaded you to come over to the bright side! :)
Thanks for your input! Yes I've heard a few people say they like the original SL files the most, the same as with the Q 116.
I have an SL2s and whist its a nice camera in many ways the AF is poor. I`ve never invested in the native lenses because of that .
I think so many people swap the strap straight away they never notice. I don’t think I ever used the SL strap on mine.
The first SL had these nice 4 buttons around the display which had double functions when pressed short or long,
I loved it.
What made me often prefer the A9 was the weight.
AF on the SL was yes, slower, but when nailed, then perfect.
Also noise with high ISO and low light looked much better on the SL.
I sold the SL and still have an A9.
Nice, yes I still use my SL instead of new models. Still my main Leica for portraits.
Thanks Matt. Watching your videos over the last few days. Has changed my mind I wanta great 50 mm lens to go with my SL 2s
Thanks for checking out my videos. If you’ve not seen my latest top 10 video see that and it will confirm your choice I think! :)
For a user that wants to use more longer telephoto lenses, third party at first with IS, which would you recommend? Eventually I would want to move to some Leica options.
If the lens has IS you can use any. For more reach get the SL2 and use APS-C mode.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom that’s brilliant I didn’t even think of using the APC mode for that! Thank you for the insight!
Thanks, great to hear it!
Hi Matt, what is for you the best SL to use with Vintage Lenses? Is it the SL2-S? Thanks
If all the cameras were the same price I'd get the SL2-S for the IBIS, low light, better video. All 3 cameras are great with vintage lenses. If you don't need the mod cons save money and get the original SL like I use.
Nice video Matt. The SL cameras are solidly built, have a simple design (which I prefer over cameras with lots of buttons) and are a pleasure to use.
Thanks John, yes I love the SL cameras for the EVF and simple design.
Great comparison video :)
Helps a lot in the purchase choise
Thanks Julian, great. That was my hope.
Very nice video as usual. How are the JPEGs straight out of the SL? Thanks
Thanks! I'm sure the JPEGs will be nice. I don't think I've shot JPEGs in the last 10 yrs so I'm not sure sorry.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks
Thanks! Yes M cameras are sexy. I just got the M10. The SL is a workhorse.
Like button “smashed.!” This is useful information. Thanks!
Thus far, I am using my “team” of M10 and M Type 246 cameras. I foresee the potential of eventually adding an SL-series camera, rather than a newer M-series camera.
Thank you! Yes I may add a M10/M10P at some stage (for a smaller FF travel option)
Great video!!! Consulting...I am thinking to make an upgrade from Leica SL, to Leica SL2, or SL2s. use for wedding photography. SL colors are excellent!!! is it necessary in your opinion? If yes, which kind of model you suggest!
Thanks in advance
Sebastiano from Italy
Thanks! If you crop in post the SL2 is useful for more MP, if you like 24MP the SL2S. People say the SL still has the best colours but you decide from the video results.
Upgraded from SL to SL2 since my other camera is Q2. Same sensor. Original SL is amazing value.
Great! I would get the SL2 if I owned a lot of TL lenses, for sure.
Is the SL-2's auto-focus reliable enough to photograph walking pedestrians?
Hi Matt, Do you use focus peaking with those vintage M lenses on your SL? I wonder if that feature is more sensitive on the SL2.
It's more lens dependant. If the lens is very low contrast you won't see FP' as that works using contrast.
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Yes, FP works much better on modern lenses.
Thanks, yes great point about the amazing true-Leica Leica SL lenses and good info on the SL3, thanks for sharing!
Yes I like the SL too. Yes they likely tried to make it more M-like with 3 buttons etc.
I'm agree the 4 buttons were great
I wasn`t aware the at the SLS had phase detect ? Its contrast the same as the other models .That`s its Achilles' heel .
It's not true phase detect like the S5II, it's just advanced hybrid contrast detect (I think they call it) ..better than SL/SL2
Thanks Grom! I’d like a Reporter version if I win the lottery :)
Hmm, but doesn’t the new Nikon Zf change the game entirely for the potential of using Leica (or any other) lenses? IBIS with any manual lens, pixel shift, cheaper, etc.
I see someone has already answered but yes the SL2/SL2S have IBIS for any lens.
Yes the Sigma DG DN lenses are very good
@@AIP404I’ve had no problems with autofocus M and autofocus LTM lenses on my Nikon Z8.
Sorry to hear, yes Peter Coulson has the same issues and wrote to Leica to say fix it with firmware.
@@MarkaustinHasler the same 👍🏻
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom my Leica SL is on the way Matt 😂 if people notice me now I'll at least look cool 😂😂😂😎
Hi, nice setup! Yes I modify all lenses to M then M-L. Works great.
Is the SL-2's auto-focus reliable enough to photograph walking pedestrians?
Hi Matt .... Nice video and very timely I might add. I am completely sold on the SL system for its simplicity and viewfinder and so far I like the SL2S for its low light performance and now I question the need over all those megapixels when improvements can be made in post production. I am doing my best to be patient to see what the SL3 brings to the table and then I'll make my decision as pricing on the SL2s should get better.
Thanks! Yes people think 2024 for the SL3!
This year has been a drab for new camera launches. However the year 2024 promises to be a exciting year for new camera launches, for a start Cannon will be launching the R1 and the R5ii, Sony will be launching the A1ii, Leica will be launching M11P, and SL3.
Yes 2024 is looking good! I always prefer the P models for their looks!
Hi Matt , you shoot black and white, why don’t you use monochrome camera?
Well done.
Thanks Scott!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom I look forward to that day!
How timely. I was thinking of purchasing a Leica SL series camera versus an M
Great! I did a SL vs M vs Q vs CL video. Perhaps check that too.
The BSI sensor on the SL2-S sealed the deal for me. Excellent low light performance !
Yes for sure the best choice for low light here!
Sl3 will get the amazing Panasonic pdaf so definitely worth waiting.
Yes for people that like AF they'll love the SL3 I think!
Man I’m trying really hard to old off for a SL3. But the 2000$ off right now it’s making it hard. Plus got a full CL kit for trade in. By the unknown of focus system is scary to me. I’m a Sony shooter(A1)
Hmm yes! If you want AF wait for the SL3 (like the Lumix S5II we think), if happy with CL AF then the SL2-S is fine for you.
SL type601 is best camera,cheap and you can use another type lens(PK-L,F-L,EF-L,M42-L,M-L,R-L),and SL 28 35 50 75 90 aa is very good lens.尤其是SL type601的直出颜色非常漂亮,好过SL2和SL2s。
Yes love mine too!

Thanks!
Hey Matt
At this late stage I wouldn’t buy the SL2 or SL2 S
It’s probably only a few months away before the SL3 is released and the price of the two current models will drop substantially, also the disappointing features such as slow
autofocus, fixed back screen and slow memory cards etc will be addressed
All the very best
Thanks, yes I think the SL3 is going to be pretty popular so there should be lots of older models on sale after.
Which is one reason to love them otherwise just buy a Sony. I moved from Sony to Leica for those reasons. Floppy back, tracking subjects and a million fps is not photography
@@Dpul945The flip screen to me just screams cheap consumer-grade camera. Leica knows what it’s doing.
Slow autofocus? Slow memory cards… depends what one wants to do with that camera. Tested them both today and can’t complain, just the opposite …
@@jensruckert4763 there is no point having a camera which is built and heavy like a brick and is the most expensive camera body on the market but performs like a canon or Nikon did three generations ago
The native German lenses are far too heavy and expensive
As they are not collectable and drop in value with time, if wasn’t for the prestige name why would you buy it over the competition?
The original SL seems to have much in common with the M10. Images are the most natural. I found the SL too clinical.
Thanks Nick, yes I still love my SL. No complaints.
I have 2 Sl2-S for work and absolutely love them. I shoot mainly available light and the low light level performance is astonishing.
Rumour is that the SL3 will be a hybrid with the ability to shoot at different Megapixels so you have the SL2 and SL2-S capabilities
Nice combo! Yes I think the SL3 will have the Q3 sensor.
a 40+ megapixel Leica with phase detect AF and some Panasonic style video features might just be the ticket to get some photographers on board.
Customer service in London did not reply however I must give a shout out to Leica store Manchester where I bought them as they gave me a loaner and have really tried to help
I ended up now buying a CL as a back up to my other 2 bodies as if it can happen to one you never know.
It’s been a really bad experience tbh. Having extolled the advantages of the Leica to the few that follow me and how I love shooting with the camera to now have this happen makes me wonder whether my judgement was foolish
With Nikon the CS was always there, with Sony nothing, Canon was also great and you would have expected Leicas to be great too but alas that’s just not the case
Hahahaha. Too late, Leica. I just pre-ordered the gorgeous Nikon Zf with the Bordeaux Red finish.
Nice! ..you can always come back later once the SL3 lands :)
@@thedarkslide we obviously approach photography quite differently… and that’s ok
i have to admit i am tempted to make my digital leica not an M but an SL. access to my nikon and canon vintage glass it too tempting not to consider it.
I have four Leicas, but if I buy another, it will be a Q3.
Nice! Yes each system brings it's strengths.
Way too many good cameras!
Haha yes! 2 were on loan :)
You look like Mr. T with all that around your neck.
Haha we must be from the same generation! :D
Once you’ve used a Leica people rarely go back.
does the SL 602 have eye tracking focus?
SL2-S is the best so far. The next camera should be even better (like the Lumix S5 II)
