Mekong River Cruise | Laos Whiskey Village & Pak Ou Caves (Day 2)

- What’s the best way to travel from Thailand to Laos? Going on a Mekong River cruise to Luang Prabang, of course!
We begin our final day cruising the Mekong River in Pak Beng, Laos where we ended day one of the cruise with an overnight stay at the Le Grand Pakbeng hotel. This riverside resort was so luxurious and the perfect place to watch the sunrise over the Mekong River. If you’re lucky, you will even see elephants bathing in the river under the morning sun!
For day two, we cruise from Pakbeng to Luang Prabang and make several stops along the way! First, we imbibe on locally made libations at the Laos Whisky Village (Ban Xang Hai). This riverside village is famous for…whiskey of course! Or, ‘Lao Lao’ as the locals call it! We tasted rice wines and lao lao whisky made right here in the village.
Next, we visited the impressive Pak Ou Buddha Caves along the Mekong River. This Buddhist temple, full of literally hundreds of buddha statues, is built into the cliffside creating a serene and cozy spot for worshipers to come. It was quite small, so the stop was brief but we were so glad to have experienced this special cave temple.
After arriving at our guesthouse in Luang Prabang, we round out our travel video with a recap of the Mekong River Cruise tour. We give our thoughts of the two days floating down the Mekong River and what we enjoyed the most.
In our next video, we explore the beautiful city of Luang Prabang, Laos and take in what this new town has to offer!
We hope you enjoy our Laos travel vlog and, as always, we’ll see you in our next video as we Keep Going Places!

The whiskey village looked so fun! 💜
It really was! So many fun things to see and do ☺️
@@KeepGoingPlaces yea and so many things to drink 😜 I can’t remember why but our Nagi cruise skipped that stop, we missed out.
Well all the more reason to go back and do it again! 🙃
yes but commercial tourism the visit at the village was only a reason to spend money .......@@KeepGoingPlaces
Ashley and Jordan, you two are great. Enjoy your video. You got a Sub here.
I love this video of seeing people navigated through the Mekong river on the boat. Instead of traveling from Thailand to Laos on this Mekong river, I think you could also start from Can Tho Vietnam to Laos then Thailand.
Guys I love your channel! Always great videos and you have such a nice presence! You both are great together! But independently of anything I actually came here to say how beautiful Ashley´s hair is hahaha
Hey there! Thanks so much, that’s very sweet of you to say. ☺️
I agree.... I did many similar journeys about 8 years ago and have since been teaching in Europe for 3 years so I can move to Asia permanently next year. Thanx for the great videos guys.
What a beautiful places along the Mekong river. While watching your video, I feel like I'm traveling with you 😃. It makes me miss my home land of Laos. Thanks again for sharing this wonderful video 👍😎🙂

We hope to meet up with our new travel friends again somewhere in the world. Take care! :)
Wasn’t it though?! So glad y’all enjoyed this video - especially since you know exactly what the real experience is like. Makes us feel like we really captured the experience. It’d be so great to meet up again on a new travel adventure! -Ashley & Jordan
Love your videos. It’s like watching travel channel. I did the banana pancake trail a while ago and keep watching videos for the memory. You got me hooked to your channel. :-)
Thanks for another great video of my former homeland, BTW Howdy from Cowtown! I didn’t know you guys were from Dallas until I read your profile, pretty cool stuff, stay safe and have a great time.

Hi Scott! Thank you so much, we love to hear that. 😊
Miss my country
I hope my beautiful motherland and my beautiful hometown Laungphabang treated u well ... enjoy and safe travels ..
OK. Now that I've seen both videos I'll gush.
I took an almost identical cruise. I started in Huai Xai Laos, right across the river from where you guys did. It was the Shompoo line, and the boat was pretty much identical, with the same layout, and wonderful food. Same stops, but I stayed in a guest house with that same spectacular view for about $11 for the night.
The cruise was relaxing and beautiful, as you said. The people were awesome, and the kids were so cute! Lots of great photos. I loved the Pak Ou caves, and was lucky enough to see the elephants in Pak Beng also. Laos is such an underappreciated travel location!
fantastic journey ,love it
Thank you! ☺️

The river looks amazing and goes a long ...... Have you guy visiting Cambodia? A lot of great places in the country. I missed my hometown. I would like to see your videos in Cambodia. Thanks and stay safe my friend.
We did visit Cambodia, but only for a short time. We were in Cambodia when the pandemic started and we had to go home. We would love to go back and spend more time there!
@@KeepGoingPlaces thanks for visiting ours country, Cambodia. I’ll looking for that video on the channel. Stayed safe and have great day anywhere you guys are at. Thanks
So cool! Love your channel! My daughter and I flew to Luang Prabang 6 or 7 years ago and took the boat up the Mekong and stayed a night in one of the villages. Had great memories, but not a big fan of Laos whisky!
Thank you so much! Isn’t it such a gorgeous country? They definitely do whisky differently but we didn’t mind. Thank you for watching, so glad you’re enjoying it. ☺️
I enjoy the video, well done
☺️
Love the music you play in your videos. Who is the music by?

Playing cards are illegal in Thailand if you weren't aware. Laos is different.
saw many people covering their legs on the boat. Was it cold ?
This may have been enough to convince my wife to make this trip.
Haha DO IT!! You’ll have a blast!
Hi Ashley and Jordan , I am surprised you have crossed the Friendship bridge from Thailand to Lao, I was under the impression the Thai border was closed due to Covid, Rob🙂
Hi there! This was filmed in February of 2020.
Thanks for the reply, I like seeing your videos
Sorry I'm flying. Too long a boat trip down the river.
To each their own! Thanks for watching ☺️
i'm planning my southeast asia trip and i have watched & loved every video in this channel! you guys are adorable and the content is high quality, congrats and thank you 🥰 if i may ask, do you remember at what time did you have to be at the border to Huay Xai? Im considering taking the bus from chiang rai to chiang khong early in the morning instead of spending the night in chiang khong 😄 bad idea?
Oh thank you so much! We’re so happy to hear that ☺️. We were picked up to go to the border right after breakfast and we were on our boat by 9:30 AM. Unless your River boat leaves in the afternoon it might be best to stay the night in town before.
We did this trip 3 years ago, weren't very happy with the minivan drive from Chiang Mai to the border. We were dropped off at a money-change office, where we were told to change to Laos currency (against high rates), as the customs only accepted that at arrival. This seemed to be a lie, they accept all kind of currencies and there is an ATM. We had the worst hotel experience ever in the Oudomsin Hotel, Ban Houayxay. Very dirty and no feedback from no-English-speaking staff. The boattrip itself is very nice. Arriving at Luang Prabang there was a new port about 10 km. from the town, where they grab your luggage and take it against payment to a kind of tuktuk, which is 10x the Thai rate. All services we used were at least 5 times more expensive than in Thailand. Laos people are completely different from Thai people. We were happy to cross the border back into Thailand. No more Laos for us.
Don’t swim in Mekong river bc they have fish as big as 2 of u. They don’t bite just swallow whole. Good luck. I hoped c u guys again.
Is Laos the final country before Covid? 😭
No, not quite yet. We make it to a couple more!
@@KeepGoingPlaces Awesome! Cannot wait
What’s the music at 4:00 please
The song is ‘Only This Matters’ by Ten Towers. One of Jordan’s favorites!
@@KeepGoingPlaces it’s a vibe

So boring sorry
I truly enjoy your cruise and music in the back ground, thanks for sharing.
So glad to hear that, thanks for watching!
