The You Rock Foundation: Jim Root of Slipknot
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 лип 2016
- Jim Root, one of the two guitarists for Slipknot, speaks to The You Rock Foundation about how he has struggled as an outsider with turbulent thoughts throughout life and how he has used his artistic career path to distract him from them. As someone who is most comfortable playing behind a mask on the stage, music gets him out of his head and gives him strength to continue.

I am so grateful for Jim for doing this. It was apparent this wasn't very easy for him but he gave this gift to us.
Thanks for this, Jim is a guy down to earth and he's great because he really cares about fans. I met him years ago and he was very kind and polite. Even we smoke a cig together. Jim and You Rock Foundation thanks for this.
he is such an amazing guy I just love how much slipknot cares about their fans

James if you ever see this, i love you and your music has kept me going all my life.
Stumbled on this by accident and damn did I need this
"Don't wish, do." Powerful Words of wisdom by Jim Root.
I have high anxiety as well and to hear my idol has those problems too, it helps a lot to know he's fighting a battle like mine and I'm not alone in it. Thank you Jim, your an amazing human being, you are a huge inspiration to me.
Words of Wisdom...Life has it's own mindless way of trying to beat you down. I'm 65 and been thru some shit but no more than anybody else. 16 years of acute heroin addiction (been on methadone for 12 years), mother's suicide, divorce and loss of daughter, I don't play guitar enough but it really does help. Travelled in bands (AS A BASSIST) all over the West Coast for 40+ years. That's hard damn work but it beats crying in yer beer. Artists. In all my years of making and listening to music I've gotta say SLIPKNOT is the most intense act available to humans on earth now. That's an educated observance. I'm happy to be able to hear and see that kind of emotion put to music and show. I kinda understand the dedication and sacrifices required and the tribulations of the biz. Thank you for the inspiration and for taking Rock'n'Roll to the next level.
ROCK ON!!!! RIP Paul Gray
Holy shit, man, your story is moving, hope you're still doing well! Rock on \m/
He’s so sweet
I'm not going to lie. I lost it at the end. everything he explained is how I feel, but knowing that my my hero had/still goes through shit, and to take the time to sit down, and talk about it is just amazing. I'm so happy I look up to him. I'm so happy that he's my hero and inspiration to my playing. hearing him say that at the very end means so much to me.
i never knew jim had these issues i h
ave alot of anxiety and im still overcomming it but its nice to know ur not alon e.
I know right? It's really comforting to hear a man of this caliber to talk about the same thing that I've had anxieties about coming a musician(free time on tour ec.) and it really inspires me to overcome my own stuff.
absolutly brothe i wish u luck on the journey its a tuff one but its all we fucking got!
MetalHeadDuke Read up on Trent from NIN. He's had it hard 2 bro
Please, make another interview with Jim Root. He's very smart and we can listen to him for hours.
I just love how Jim is so serious about this, at the very end you can tell he gets emotionally about these things, Jim is really down to earth, favourite member, my inspiration from personality, clothing, hair, ynow he is my lifestyle.
What a sweetheart ♥️
He's so down to earth. Very relatable. No matter how successful you get, you still have yourself to deal with and personal BS that's just always going to be there. Also, some great advice here. Stop wishing, go out and DO.

Life does not discriminate. Rich or poor, it will find you, it will test you. That's for damn sure. I don't think people realize how many people are in rough shape. This hit me one day and put in perspective how many are out there. I've battling the whole depression/anxiety thing myself and my physician sent me to the psychiatrist and psychologist. So I call to set up an appointment......the next available date was over 3 and 1/2 months.....I was completely blown away....there are so many people out there dealing with these issues that it took that long to get in there.....this is clearly a serious problem that needs to be recognized and really looked into cuz this is something affecting a huge percentage of people. They treat it singularly but when there's that many people out there dealing with this, this is something more than 1 person talking to a therapist and some meds. This is a mass issue and needs a bigger picture look. This is no coincidence....something is not right. Until this gets figured out, there's just gonna be more and more people. It's definitely getting more recognized because of things like this. So it's cool someone like Jim is willing to share his own battle and shedding light on this issue. It's not something people are comfortable talking about.
suffering through severe depression, im glad this was suggested, i needed this today, jims an awesome guy
Jim Root is the best dude ever!
He is doing better at giving advice than my own father has ever done. It sucks. I want parents like him.
Had probably the worst night I've had in a long time and watching this video the very next day spoke volumes to me. Everything he said just related to me and hearing all this from my fucking hero means so much to me. Thanks Jim. You are the reason I picked up the guitar and found happiness in something again. Thank you.
straight up, Jim seems like a warm and down to earth person, he just makes me smile ok? idk why he just does
Jim is such a great soul.
Just saw Slipknot last night in Toronto. Jim is quickly becoming one of my favorite rock starts. Really down to earth guy.
As a Left-handed guitar player, this man inspired me to never give up. He's an amazing guitarist and an great person.
I got bad news for you... he's right handed
He's left handed and plays right handed guitar.
@@BlueFlameBird plays right handed guitar? 🤔
You matter and you rock... I say that to me a lot.
Thank you
I've dealt with a lot of issues in my teenage years and up to now where I am 22.
I have considered suicide, I have considered drugs and alcohol as an escape from my reality. But I started listening to Metal. It sounds cheesy but Slipknot, especially, has been here for much of the dark period of my life. And their music has helped me not to fall into drugs or anything like that. I remember reading biographies of Slipknot and watching interviews about their past and thinking to myself that I should not keep on staying in that position.
I was fortunate enough to meet a special person and she motivated me and supported me and now I am in a better place.
Don't lose hope whoever is reading this. There are only two outcomes, either things get better or where things don't get better, you will become stronger. Either way you will get out of this hole you are now.
I will always be grateful for Slipknot. Even though I am sure Jim or other members of Slipknot won't read this, I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for their craft.
I’m glad you found a path out of the darkness. I went through something similar. Stay strong. Your story inspired me to keep going !

Jim, I don't know if you ever read these comments, but I just want to say that I can totally relate to the message you are presenting to us. We all have battles in our daily lives, and no matter how big or small, we need to find a way to work through these times.
Your music playing has inspired me for years, but your message behind it all will last a life time. We all need that release, now matter what it is, and music is a beautiful way to connect with yourself and find that inner peace.
Thank you for the inspiration, and keep sharing your musical inner-self with us to enjoy.
Thanks!
It's as if he was speaking to me about the whole your head wondering part that is the problem I'm facing.... Wow love you Jim!!!
What a majestic man. Incredible guitar player and an absolutely lovely bloke.
Thank you Jim. Im sure Im not the only person out here that really needed to be reminded of this. You said it beautifully.
Jim root is the role model i never had during my hard times. My dad always told me im not here to be your friend and that hurt me. One day in 6th grade I found slipknot and that's how I made it through.
I can relate to jim when he talked about school and not fitting in with the crowds
Same for a lot of us and thats a great thing fuck fitting in 🤘

Pretty awesome how he talks about what he went threw, and how he has changed, love the encouragement, achievements, controlling situations, thinking positive, Jim’s bad ass, I can relate to all this. After going threw my head trauma, I see I wana push more!!! Thanks Jim.
Slipknot and Stone Sour have gotten me through more dark times than the people in my life ever have.
If your only way out is through, this is the music for it.
Slipknot saved my life.
I love this guy so much !
Slipknot has saved me several times of doing something stupid.
Although the band and singer are referring to themselves in their music, still they've helped several peeps out there trying to understand that they are not alone with their pain and agony.
Monster’s from the past creeping up, trying to eat you alive and summoning your biggest fears....
Thanks to them I’ve got a weapon to fight them with in my mind and dreams.
Beats all the painkillers and other meds I have to take when I’m undergoing a bad period.
Thanks for everything..........
Thank you Jim
you speak my thoughts brother. thank you for having the courage to do this for us. it's a good feeling knowing you are not alone hearing it come out of someone else's mouth
I must admit I’m not a slipknot fan, but Jim is absolutely correct, regardless of what people do in their life’s we are all humans enjoying beautiful planet we are blessed to live on. Cheers Jim keep up the good work and knowledge
How can you dislike this guy?
People who don't have emotion
This moved me really fucking bad. I really needed someone who could tell me this.-Thanks!
Jim is a damn cool guy. I wish that I can have some beers with him and talk about the life and other things....
Damn this spoke to me more then any other interview I have seen in a long time.

Thank you
Thank you Jim, we all know now.
On a level he’s a very good man, a lot of respect for him
Slipknot saved my life more than once
i dont get how people dislike this kind of Video.
I know we ALL have our issues and problems in life, but THIS for me struck not only a nerve, but struck home for me in sooooo many ways... Ever since Slipknot came out in '99, they have always been a band and their music that has helped me get thru sooooo much dark and ugly shit in my life. And after seeing and hearing this from one of my key instrumental guitar idols, it means even soooooo much more. I have met Jim several times over the years, and he has always been a great guy and a equally huge personality to be around. I've told this him before, and he is extremely grateful to hear things like this from his fans. I know it's almost impossible to do, but I hope that one day I can have a one-on-one with Jim to really talk about things like this... having someone else you idolize going through some of the same dark and ugly shit you are means the world to people like myself.
So I dont know IF Jim will see this, or if the people at The You Rock Foundation will pass this on to him, but thank you Jim! You are an even bigger person, influence and inspiration to me than ever! Keep up the amazing work man, and thank you for sharing this with me and the rest of us. I hope to one day thank you - even by a few drinks, dinner, whatever for this, because you really are an amazing guy!!
Thank you, I needed to hear this Today
