Sometimes my Spartan stares me down when i have been wearing another piece for a while, and ask in a deep voice: where the hell have you been, man? :) Just love the form factor

I added a Spartan to my collection earlier this year, just because of the fact that it's a descendant of the original SAK. And it's a great carry piece, especially during the hot months when you want something light. Awesome video, my friend!

The Pioneer is the modern(ish) incarnation of the 1890 Soldier knife, and has the same toolset except for the can opener being modernised, and the screwdriver incorporating a bottle opener. The whole 93mm alox range - Farmer, Harvester, Rancher, Pioneer X, Farmer X etc. - are based around that. That was also the longest serving model actually issued to the Swiss Army, the Soldier 61.
I hate to be pedantic but although as you rightly say the 1890 model it was initially made by other manufacturers, in 1891, just a year later, Karl Elsener's company started making them. So it was the first Victorinox, and was the first Swiss Army Knife, ile. the first one used in the Swiss Army.
The 1897 model was not issued to the Swiss Army, but was an ''Offiziers- und Sportsmesser'', and was privately purchased by officers who weren't issued the 1890 Soldatenmesser (Soldier's knife). This is why to this day the Spartan, and all other 91mm celidor models have the words ''officier suisse'' stamped on the blade tang.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you. Can I just say first...
You are clearly someone like myself and enjoy the knife history! I enjoy meeting people like yourself with a love for knives.
Right, I agree with you about the 1890 being the same as the pioneer. But the 1890 was not designed by Victorinox/Karl Elsner. That's why I do not class it as the first Victorinox. As we know, it was made in Solingen initially also. That was my thinking.

Hi Martin, I avoided Victorinox for years I didn't want a multi blade knife, them I saw they did single blade and just a blade and one tool knives so I bought the solo was so amazed at the build quality it made me look at more I have the Alox versions except for the floral knife in purple synthetic material, absolutely some of the best value knives you can buy. Doing your research well keep it up makes the videos more interesting cheers pal.

Just used my huntsman blade today to cut through a digger battery terminal, thick copper wire. Not the best tool for the job , but the side cutter was useless the hacksaw didn't work and as a sort of last resort it cut through. Just happened to have the huntsman as my beater so wasn't to worried about the blade. As it happened it sharpened no prob . Just pleased i didnt have to use my Spartan which i normally have on hand or worse my Recruit or Tourist, or god forbid my Angler. I can sacrifice my huntsman, so if i think hard use might be coming i dig out the huntsman to save the Spartan, Recruit, Tourist and Angler, in that order .
