Interesting question. If your refrigerator does not have an ice maker or water maker, why would you have a filter? Unless you mean you don't use them? then don't bother with it.
John...needed to replace my filter so I watched your video. I'm not sure if I have a different GE model and it works differently but you mentioned you don't have to turn the water off. Well, when I loosened my filter, water started spraying everywhere and I had to run to turn the water off. Needless to say, I had a mess to clean up. The other thing is that my filter is the MWF but for some reason it would not fit. The top where the lip is was a lot bigger than the one that I pulled out of my fridge. Could there be a different size. Thanks
Sounds like you have a different model. My model GE is "Profile" If you have a manual you can see what your model is or better yet, look at the tag in your refrigerator.
Stuck! Stuck! Stuck! I've been periodically trying to get the old filter out for a year now. Like you said, nearly impossible to overtighten, I assume like a bayonet mounted camera lens. So what's up? What could possibly make it stuck? Could really hard water do it? I'm afraid to break it. If I do will that kill the fridge forever? Thanks for the tutorial.
If that doesn't work, I found this online. "Take a hair dryer. Carefully warm the area up around the filter. It should come loose after using the hairdryer.."
so question you might know, replaced the filter from that glacier fresh to a new glacier fresh (its what was in when we moved in so i got the same kind) and now the filter light wont even turn on, fridge makes noises a bit like its "processing" the new filter or whatever and the green light/lights in general were on for the old filter but after holding the reset for 3 seconds like it instructed, there is just no filter light. im confused lol (we have a GE profile in our place, looks like an older version of your fridge, more analog buttons and no real fancy screen besides a lil digital one telling the fridge temp and what not but it IS a Profile
After replacing the filter did you let out did you let out at least 4 quarts of water through the new filter? This is to take out that cloudy water that the filter puts out when new But it also take out any air in the line if you did not pre fill the new filter. Keep in mind that if your filter also feeds the auto ice maker, if it gets no water because of air pockets in the line it will make some kind of sound. I'm not familiar with your model but I Hope this helps to troubleshoot.
@@JohnCRV lets hope so! I appreciate it, its probably ran a gallon at this point. Changed it less than 24 hrs ago. (ran a bit before using the water but have just been using regularly since) was just weirded out by the lack of light
I went through the process of replacing the filter and running the couple gallons to have the water flow easy from water dispenser. However, I’ve been trying to reset the water filter light , but it’s still red. Is there something wrong with this “idiot light”?
My light does not go on at all and never had to reset it, not sure why but I can live with that. Not sure what model you have but all you need to do is search on UA-cam with your model name I'm sure you'll find a video. If it still doesn't go off you can call GE support.
If your model refrigerator is same as shown, the filter housing shuts down automatically as soon as you unscrew the filter it should have shut itself down with out you having to turn the water off.
You do know that when you took the filter off you said ,"...turn it counter clockwise..." but the video clearly shows you doing it clockwise? The same thing when your putting the filter on, but opposite. Watch the video again.

WHEN I TURN THE OLD FILTER TO TAKE IT OUT WATER KEEPS POURING OUT OF THE TOP OF THE FILTER HOLDER. WHAT SHOULD I DO? MADE MESS. BOB

What if your water filter gets stuck what can you do and won't come out
There's no way you can overtighten these. The only thing I can suggest is make sure you are turning it counterclockwise, it should come out.
