    Excellent video. Should have used a long stick to point out where to bleed the fuel if it gets air. OTOH grateful could SEE the valve to loosen to do that in the video, though didn't know which of the two. Awesome vid, thnx

    Hope someone can answer this... So the relief valve on the side is not to drain the canister??? Does it need to be released? How often should you drain the water separator? Doesn't pulling the filter out without draining the bowl cause unfiltered fuel to get introduced to the injection pump? Yes, Im new to this truck. : )

    Wade, I enjoy all your videos whether it is my model of truck or not....Very good info to absorb. I have a Stock 04.5 Dodge Quad Cab Cummin's with 265,000 miles on it . Replaced injectors @ 216,000. Still no noticeable blow by. This is my first diesel so all the info i can learn to keep it running at its best is appreciated. One question....Finally needing to replace my stock muffler. on a budget here what would you recommend....also will deleting the cat hurt or effect it with out some type of tuner? I'm not a young kid anymore so i don't need the loudest truck on the block.

      It will need to be addressed. Not only will you be leaking fuel where you don’t want to leak fuel, you will have a hard start.

    Thank you for the great info!! Question I started with a leak in the valve I changed my filter and on your video I notice the filter sits and lines up with some fitting inside the housing, how ever I threw away my old filter so not sure if that missing part was inside the old filter or I lost it somewhere, can you tell me if there is something inside where Filter goes into when we install the filter again thank you

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  15 днів тому +1

      There is a seal on the filter but that’s it, and it seals around the stem. New filter you should be fine. Then replace the oring on the lid.

    I realize this video is a little dated, thanks for the tutorial though. Saved me a lot of time figuring things out in my own. I was hoping you still check these comments and can answer this, what do you do if you pull the filter and see sediment in the bowl? It wasn’t a lot, but there was some in there. Between the size of a nickel and a quarter maybe? I’m terrible at estimating these kind of things. Hope you come across this and send me an answer. Thanks again

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  3 роки тому

      Thanks for the question. If the bowl hasn’t been cleaned in a while, I suggest cleaning it out and changing the filter. Then check in 5K miles and see if the sediment returns. If so, I suggest dropping the tank and checking out your fuel system.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  7 місяців тому +1

      I know its stating the obvious but you have to figure out why you aren’t getting the power supply to the pump. If it’s a 98-02 truck, you could be having some ECM issues.

    This is not a common comment about the video. It’s a problem that I have. I get an engine light and the code says it’s the heat exchanger replaced that and the solenoid can’t figure it out.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  3 місяці тому

      You get a code for the intake air heater when you replace your fuel filter? The two things don’t have anything to do with each other, I would suggest having someone with a quality scanner take a look at the truck and diagnose.

    I have a 1999 5.9 Cummins that I just changed the fuel pump in the tank. The truck started fine and ran for about a minute and then died and would not start again. So I changed the fuel filter and the canister was only 1/4 full when I took it off. No water in it. I bled the line on the tank side of the fuel canister and it spurted fuel. I used the ignition switch to run the lift pump with the canister off and it provided lots of fuel in a circular type of pattern. I filled the canister with diesel fuel and reassembled it. I made sure all of the seals were lubricated and fit fine. I bled the injectors 1, 3 and 4. Still no joy. Do I need to bleed anything at the injector pump? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  2 роки тому +1

      When you changed your pump in the tank, was there a pump in the tank before or did you have a pump on the block? If you have a pump on the block still, you could have a restriction that is causing you incorrect fuel pressure and causing a hard start or no start. If you crank are you getting fuel at the injectors? If none of this helps, scan for codes, make sure truck is cranking over at proper speed, and lets us know if you have any other questions.

    So you don’t NEED to fully drain the bowl every time? Or you can, you’ll just have to prime it

    • @thoroughbreddiesel
      @thoroughbreddiesel  2 роки тому +1

      If you don’t empty the bowl there is a chance, if you have proper lift pump pressure, they you may not have to prime the system. If you empty the bowl, you will. Don’t be afraid of having to prime a VP44 fuel system. In fact, its something that you should be prepared to do if needed.

    Oddly enough, there is not a single UA-cam video or Dodge repair manual that has the layout of my mother's 2000 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.3 V8...
    I'm trying to find the fuel filter and I'm guessing the fuel pump is in the tank...
    However, everything that every video and every manual shows is not on this truck... Nor do any vids or manuals show the inverted canister that I'm about to reveal...
    There is a canister that looks similar to the filter canister in this video but its under the passage side of the cab and its inverted... Another words, it upside down as compared to this video and what appears to be the lid is at the bottom, not the top... It does have what appears to be a fuel line going to the top, but there's approx 2" clearance and no way to access it to remove the fuel line ...
    Moreover it requires a special tool to unscrew this canister lid at the bottom and no one on Earth knows anything about it... It does not have a hex nut in the center, rather it has a small 1" diameter mound in the center where the hex nut should be... However, it does have a single 1/4" flange running across the lid, but its divided into two sections due the small mound in the center where the hex nut should be...
    Note: There is 7"x5"x 11"H plastic rectangular canister mounted right beside the upside-down canister that looks like the fuel filter canister... I have no idea what it is because its not in any of the manuals...
    Also, its factory, my dad only sprayed the bed and installed a tool box... No custom work other than that...
    Has anyone ever experienced such a thing ???

      Could be a lot of different things. The age of the motor would suggest to me that there is a good possibility that the injectors could be hazing a little. Your grid heater may not be working correctly. Just watch to make sure the truck isn’t using oil.
