- This week Trena refinishes a pair of small projects, each with sentimental value. She refinishes an old rocking horse to be given to a young grandson, and works on a simple oak mailbox for another customer with fond memories of it.

To get hard to grab nails, I like to use a pair of flush cut pliers to minimize "digging". Either a cheap (or wrecked) pair of electronic flush cutters (soft blades don't last long on steel nails), or an old pair of hard side cutters that I took to the bench grinder and made more flush. If the nail is 2mm thick or better I can drill down the middle of it and "tap" a tiny screw into it to pull on. Also, a makeshift mini slide hammer can help "hammer it up out" of a hole.

At least Rocky's head came to a better end than the one in the Godfather. Rocky is about the same color as your real horse! I am very impressed with the job you did with that mailbox. I thought it was ready for the burn pile for certain.
I especially love the restoration job you did on the cat. It looks brand new!

Just when I thought I was out, Trena pulls me back in! The Hobby Horse looks brand new. The deep rich brown color reminds me of a few horse a friend of mine had. The grandson will love it and the family will have great memories from it. The renewal of the mailbox looks amazing. That will last another 100 years outside collecting mail now. I am sure that the family will be so happy to see how well you did with it.
20:06: That's the first time I've seen a horse astride two other horses. Rocky must have a history as a circus performer!

About 27 years ago I built seven rocking horses for Xmas presents to some Grandchildren and 3 friends. My horses were probably twice the size of Rocky and were built from scratch plans. Came out really nice and several of them are still around. Great sense of satisfaction on my part-- the kids loved them - Grandpa (me!) ended up with a roaring case of carpal tunnel syndrome from all the sanding!! And I'd do it all again! Hope you had a Merry Christmas and have a great New Year!!

My brother in law made my daughter a rocking horse almost like that for her first Christmas. Almost 37 years ago. He used deer hide for the saddle and ears and the mane, just cute stripes, from a deer that he got one year, the wood also had a story behind it. Last year my daughter had a baby and I gave that rocking horse to her for my grandson. It’s great to have traditions to hand down like that.

As my fellow people of Italian decent it is never good to wake with a horses head in your bed, you have such a talent for choosing the right color plus touch for each project merry Christmas to you and yours including the shop dog and cat! Thank you for all the enjoyment you have given us with each project! If I knew where to send them there would be empty mustard containers on the way, cleaned and ready to use!

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to drill a hole in the bottom of the mailbox, to allow any rain or snow that makes its way inside to drain out.

Great video! Chestnut with a flax mane and tail! Very showy. Had a real filly with the same coloring, we called her Chesty. Her registered name was Poco Little Skip, out of Poco Denaro. Grand Dame was Poco Bueno.

A scene from " The Godfather" a good act from your behalve, I'm relived it was a sawdust . Memories, that's what made us as we are today, good memories that we cherish each day, when we look back, some memories are good and even bring tears in our eyes. My memories are about my late mother, who always did something for her home, made things, like sewed an artwork, like in a chair which I love very much. It's worn and loose, it would be nice to get the chair in your hands, but unfortunately the distance is way to far. Memories are even in dead things, that bring it to live, when I saw my mother working at the chair, that's how memories are so powerful.
