In my 32 years of life, I have never cried because of art. That changed today. Seeing someone with my skin tone, who looks like the men in my family at the head of an orchestral piece singing in an African language did it.
The song is a very powerful traditional prayer that are many centuries old from Lango people in Northern Uganda. Read my comments. You will know a little better why you cried.
@@cardiyansane1414 The language is Lango, a Luo dialect. The Lango are found in Northern Uganda. The lead singers both have gorgeous voices, but the male lead sent me to a different plane of existence. The soft notes that grew into a triumphant roar, so incredibly beautiful ❤️ I can't think of a time I have heard a more captivating voice
This is why the idea of Cultural Appropriation makes me so crazy. American composer with ancestry from Hong Kong, language and melody from Uganda, played on instruments from the Western European tradition and sung by a mixed group of singers that are just happy to produce beauty. It doesn't matter where it all comes from. It pulls together in an incredible piece that EVERYONE EVERWHERE enjoys. That's my mother language. Luo is a sweet language. A month ago this song was performed at cultural festival in Lira, a city in Northern Uganda by a group of beauty queens contesting for Miss Lango. It was sweet to hear it from home. Lango are among the Native speakers of Luo the language in the song.
It's so wild to me how I just don't know this language at all. There's a dialect/language in my small country of the Netherlands that has about 400.000 speakers (Frisian). Welsh has about 540.000, Scottish about 1.5 million, which is about the same as Luo. I never knew it existed before 5 minutes ago. Nor the huge amount of history it must have, or the culture of all it's people. It is such a beautiful language indeed, and I'm very grateful that I got to hear this.
What this teaches us, is that you can produce a masterpiece, put it on the internet, and it'll take the world 4 to 6 year before discovering you. But once it's done, you'd better have a lot of good stuff already there. It's the case for this masterpiece trending on TikTok and Instagram Reels lately, and it's been the same for Ayushman the kid that sang "Lord I thank you for sunshine". I pray all the hard work you're doing get recognized one day by many more people than you could ever imagine. Love and warm affections to you all
Christopher Tan won the first Grammy ever given to a piece of score for a video game, Civilizations 4, in 2011 The internet has known about this man for a decade.

If classic music, and music lover generally surely know and have to know about him, it's not absolutely the same for everyone else, especially the younger generation more Instagrammy ok TikTok whatsoever. Moreover, I give a bit of context about Ashmunan to make my point. And here it is : Create great content consistently, one day more people will get to know you.
I'm from Lebanon, I am listening to this as my country is getting destroyed. I am listening to this and finding peace in the words of another great people who the west has oppressed.
As a Luo from Uganda am so proud of this piece .. I feel every word and energy of the song in my own veins. Coz amongst my people when trouble comes it is referred to as a wind and for it to pass or to be overcome is a great feeling of victory
@@oyinade84 it's like saying a prayer that the bad time should go. Like reminiscing over how good things were before the current situation and asking that such a time should return.
Beautiful! That's a Lango traditional song. It's sung when there's intense drought and people are praying for the rain to fall. The Lango is a Luo tribe in Northern Uganda.
I am a Lango. There are a few familiar words but if you hadn't mentioned it there's no way on earth I would have imagined that it is a Lango traditional song. It sounded more like Luo of Kenya or Ludama/Jopadhola. After reading your comment I had to put aside another 13 minutes 😂 while questioning my knowledge of my mother tongue every second that passed. Nonetheless, lovely piece it is.
As an (African) immigrant, that man's voice brings me home. It flooded me with memories I didn't know was so preciously hidden in my heart. I don't think I need to know what each word means. I am happy I was home for 13 minutes and 29 seconds. What a feeling! thank you so much for this
Yes! I am a white eastern European woman, who lives in Japan and have never ever properly heard any of African languages, and even I feel like home, like I have memories I shouldn't have. ❤
As another African immigrant, you have expressed exactly how I feel. The longing for rain, the calm before the storm, the disappointment when the expected rains don't eventuate, the joy when they do, and the satisfaction of a good crop realised. Above all, the rapidity of change in the vast landscape. It never really leaves you, and pieces like this just bring it all straight back. Thank you so much!
I am a Nigerian and listening to this masterpiece on this very day 28th sept, 2024. And unforgettable experience. The instruments in this orchestra is a work of art. Bless you Christopher Tin.
My wife and I are trying to have a child together through ivf. It has already been a difficult couple of years now which made me emotionally numb. Trying to stay strong for my wife whilest protecting myself from the struggles created a thick layer around my heart. Last week we had a miscariage and i couldn't cry anymore or have some other kind of emotion. Every now and then I come back to this masterpiece. It always manages to peel the layers away and frees my emotions. My own little desire the rain to fall. Beber.
For surely there is an end. In the name of Jesus, I decree an end to everything stealing your joy. The last disappointment will be the last. Before the end of this year, your joy will be full. Please ensure to share your testimony. Shalom.

So this song was posted 4 years ago. What have I been doing? Wow. Just wow. I'm overwhelmed by a roller coaster of emotions watching this, even if I don't understand a single word that is being sang. Art is truly universal. God bless everyone that made this song possible. Cheers
This is Luo language done in Lang'o dialect! It begins with Kenyan/DRC/Tanzanian Paluo dialect and ends in Ugandan/South Sudan/Ethiopian dialect Myakwai dialect....
I am not a religious person, but this is what I believe I would hear if I died and went straight to Heaven. I cannot even start to imagine how a human being was able to compose this. My country - Ukraine - is at war now, and I listen to this divine music at night, because it gives me the strength to go on. Thank you, Maestro.
The song calls upon young men, children, women and the elderly to rejoice because all is well!! You deserve this song! It's from a Luo tribe in northern Uganda!! The Langi greet you may peace reign in your country soon!
Am proud to hear our language being used in singing not only in Luo's community but internationally Am proud to be a Luo from Kenya 🇰🇪 much love from this side 💞💞💞💞
I get goosebumps every time I listen to this masterpiece, just incredible. The only thing: Can we please, PLEASE get this Version with Jimmer Bolden on spotify??? The spotify version is allready great but this rexording is the real masterpiece!!!❤
The main guy singing has such a beautiful clear voice. Gives me goosebumps when he slowly climbs up to that high note. ugh. Definitely got this on repeat.
I genuinely believe this is the picture definition of what humanity should be. Cultures from all over the world stood beside each other building something so beautiful. I think the reason I cry when i listen to this despite not knowing the culture (outside of the research I've done about the piece) is because this is what peace looks like. Someone said in the comments that if theres anything that we want aliens to see first its this and I completely agree. Christopher you have shown the world that humanity can be beautiful.
I was just moved emotionally and spiritually. I have no idea about semantics and please GOD clever people who decide for all of us will be moved also. I just feel love.
If you have this on repeat raise your hands up🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌😅😅😅. When I fall in love with a song, I feel sorry for the song because I do not have mercy on the song, I play it until it dies. I mean, “If music be the food of love, play on, Give me excess of it that, surfeiting, The appetite may sicken and so die”…and since a song like this cannot die…it is up for a long journey on my device. Goodness mine, this is beautiful❤❤❤❤
I can't hold back a tear from dropping. Hearing a song from Uganda sang on such a platform by non Africans did it for me. I landed on it this morning on Facebook and completely fell in love with it. Four years was when it released and that's how long it took me a Ugandan to even hear it. I think our media houses need some serious lessons. Thanks for this piece Mr. Christopher. At least I can hear the language.
It is sad that something this beautiful has taken so long to circulate!!! I have to agree that it is an amazing capturing of the language and the orchestration just further captures the beauty of it!!!
You can say that again. Our media focus on mundane issues. This was an opportunity to market Uganda and Africa, but what do they show,,violence, deaths and more violence on Tv,sad

I have JUST discovered THIS MASTERPIECE (from a short clip on Instagram, I HAD to get the full version)! I don't do much chorals or Opera (sadly I know... ) But This gave Goosebumps and Shivers during 13min and brought emotions. I now NEED to see a Choral Live ! It is a MUST. Mister Christopher Tin thank you for those amazing shows, songs, Chorals. You have made a new fan right now. 🙏🏾
Oh yes!! You are in for such a treat if you go to a live performance! Something about being in the room, the way the notes sound in the room acoustics, the showmanship…i hope you love it! Please share your experience ❤
Nobody asked, but in no particular order, these are things I love about being able to watch this performance: 1. The soloists are incredible - the power in their voices really shines and that bit at the climax where they sing simultaneously for the first time is SO good! They blend so well, and clearly make a great team. 2. The little exchanges and glances between the conductor and the soloists - you look like you're having so much fun in general but I love being able to see that you're about to bring in a soloist for their next bit by watching your eyeline and expressions. 3. The percussionist who pops up with a new instrument every five minutes with a plain expression like it's nothing, in a way that kind of reminds me of a bugs bunny sketch? He's clearly very good at what he does, and I know percussionists generally do have to play multiple instruments in a piece, but this one in particular makes me smile.
Whenever the lead soloist opens his mouth, my soul soars everywhere. When I watched this on Instagram reels, my eyes purged out emotions that I could not explain. This is a powerful piece 👏 thank you Chris.
African music in orchestra is the combo we all needed. Masterfully crafted by Christopher Tin. And the male soloist is something else with his vocal runs.
I sat in silence, viewing a minute TikTok version of this song, stunned and drawn to this joy coming through the clip of a performance. I came to UA-cam for the full performance, and the restoration, joy and warmth that it has brought my soul is overwhelming. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart. ❤️

Yeaah, it's me again. I just wanted to tell you that, after hearing this song for the first time, I developed this urge to randomly shout "WALOOOOYO YAMONIIIIII" while walking around the house. Kind of like a battle cry to tell the world "make way!!!". Luckily my aunt is deaf, so she can't hear me yelling. Too bad the dogs aren't 😂
- Ok, so what crazy non-existent instrument do you want me to play this time, Chris? - So, it's basically a ceramic ball with hole in it. - (Jeez, why did I even asked..) Sure thing, Chris, sure thing...
I've watched a video from Christopher where there was a guy in the orchestra who was just banging small rocks together. Why the hell not? So awesome! Maybe it was this video?

It was sweet to hear it from home. Lango are among the Native speakers of Luo the language in the song.
I kept wondering how easy it was for me to go with the flow. 🤭☺😂

Me too. It is awesome!
Best spent 13 and a half minutes of my life.
Nobody asked, but in no particular order, these are things I love about being able to watch this performance:
Well explained!❤
