How can we expect the quality of cinema to improve if we don’t improve general quality of cinema discourse?

Rayyan Ansari whats real issue of Indian viewer, that don't know technical terms when watching cinema. Even old movie viwer knows some great terms to understand cinema.
As you said, films critics know all the term and should explain it to audience in simple manner. Coz they are professional, signed for that job. Bt eventually, most of sold out critics just praise any crap created by India huge director or star.
Btw many people of our generation now understand quality of cinema and analysis it on their on perfectly. That's why people like me, watch movie first which they like from trailer. And then after that listen to critics. Sometimes agree with them or disagree too.
Nice video bro, keep it up.

I personally don't belive in improving standards in movie, I don't agree with the usage of the word "standard" because it creates parity between "high culture" movies and popular cinema. Although for the longest time I grew up watching Rajnikanth's movies I don't appreciate it as much as I did before. Specially after a film studies course but I still strongly believe that my identity, opinion as viewer came through watching such popular movies and I need to respect that. Taking even Hitchcock for that matter, we need to appreciate his movies just as simple thrillers even before the editors Cahiers du cinéma appreciated Hitchcock. There in lies real film appreciation. Yeah again great video thanks again.

Dear Vinit, you are a devil corrupting youth. You are costing me a lot of money and movie going buddies. After your viewing your videos
    1. I go to different kind of movies (most of which my friends don't care about)
    2. I am stuck with analysing the old classics in an new light when all my buddies are busy watching the latest blockbusters on their laptop (Again my priorities don't match with that of my buddies)
    3. When they ask me how the movie was and I tell them about the details used in cinematography, they think I am a dork (again... my reputation, they used to consider me a perfectly normal guy)
    3. If the cinematography/ Editing/ Sound mixing/ directional nuances of a movie is really nice I have to watch it twice in theater (costing me more money).
I blame you for all this.

You don't have to agree with everything critics have to say but good film critics really give you insight into things you never thought about during watching the film. More often than I'd like to admit, reading a film review has made me appreciate and like a movie which I didn't like during the first sitting. For example, I didn't like Mulholland Drive when I first watched it (didn't really understand completely tbh) but after reading reviews and understanding the true essence of it, I think it is one of the greatest and ingenious films ever made.

UA-cam has recommended this just today and i am watching your "videos". I have never listened to anyone talking this way about cinema. These are great works. i feel not all movies have reached that part where technicality of visual and audio experience even matters, but some films do need recognition in terms of the work done by their crew as an unit. Its like one is talking about a simple strawberry jam sandwich while other being a marvelous and complex mutton biryani.

A film critic on UA-cam that is highly underrated is Jammy Pants on "tried and refused" productions. He mostly critiques bollywood films but does so in a detailed and objective way. He points out the flaws in a film but also builds intrigue within the audience to check out the film regardless so that they can critique it through their lenses. I implore you guys to check him out.

I learnt a lot today and you make some great points. When i read your thoughts on twitter about a movie i disagree with you every time, but its interesting to see a different POV. I do movie reviews on my channel and i will really make some changes in how i do it but i am no critic, I don't do it because i know more than anyone else. I am studying film and i learn new things everyday and i try to incorporate them in my videos but my only aim when i review a movie is to express my thoughts and feelings of the film to the world. I have tried to keep it simple and raw for a lay man to understand but i think i should try to incorporate more about the film making process. Great Video!

Thank you for this video. I stumbled upon this channel today and thank the universe for this to happen. This is what I have discussed with another of my film enthusiast friend time and again that how all the mainstream film reviewers are just talking about the content or at most the performance was it convincing or not, how good it was etc., but ignoring the form of cinema completely. Now, most of the time I know what will they say before even watching them, there is not much expectation on the part of these reviews/critics of discussing certain scenes, or editing technique, or the framing, lighting, music, background score or anything for that matter. I know the mainstream film journalism/ review/ criticism for that matter is said to only require the audience to decide to watch or not but there is a need to engage with cinema much intensely, cinema is a visual and aural form, it is not just about the story or the performance but it is primarily about filmmaking. The visuals along with sound could create their own story. It is not about the story but how you tell that story. The point is that the audience needs to be exposed to this primary aspect of filmmaking so that they could appreciate the films much more. :)

I want to talk about how the film reviewing system sucks and how it makes the experience worse. I completely agree with you that a film critic should dissect a film and explore the shots, music, direction, etc.. but a lot of present-day film critics or I say reviewers only talk about their experiences and their rating and how it ranks in his top 100 list. a critique doesn't rate a film, he talks about the great, good and bad points of a film and how to improve the craft of filmmaking, and how this film affects filmmaking.

  • @aalokpandey
    @aalokpandey 6 років тому

This needed to be said, so so much.
I think the reason for the degradation in the endeavour to critique a film has also to do with 'critiques' treating it more of a 'doing a job' than 'follwing a sincere passion'. When you put out something primarily for someone else's consumption, and not for quenching your own satisfaction first, the quality is bound to be artifical and shallow.
    Anyway, great going, Vineet.

One more point I had about your video was that I felt you didn't emphasise at all was the difference between film critic and movie reviewers.
People like Jeremy Jahns and Black Nerd never claimed to be film critics, only movie reviewers and the democratisation of the Internet has really helped increase the discussion about films by a lot (not to say it has not ruined some of the discussion as pointed by you)..A lot of people are included in the discussion who were not earlier included.
And not every critic has to have a academic perspective towards films..

Great job bro. Just wanted to tell you that you are creating exceptional content. There are many analysis channels on UA-cam- ScreenPrism, Cinefix, Now you see it, etc to name a few. They make analysis videos of only western classics and dont give a dime about Indian classics (there are many but not as much as foreign classics). I always fear that indian classics like Guide, Jaane Bhi Do Yaron, A Wednesday, Haider, Aligarh, Shahid, Black Friday, Lagaan, Mother India, Udaan, Kagaz ke phool, Works of Satyajit Ray (he was the prime inspiration for Martin Scorsese), and many thousands others will be lost in time if not given enough appreciation. Our audience is gradually getting mature and it will become a pity to see our generation appreciate only Western classics. They need to be made aware of the treasure troves of the Indian Cinema not necessarily Bollywood. And u are the only youtuber (as seen from your videos) who has the calibre to take this responsibility of embracing World Cinema rather than saturating only towards only one section of World culture (which unfortunately others are doing). You have already impressed many by analysing movies like Swades, GOW, Rang De Basanti, etc. Also this will help you create your own Niche in this competitive market. High hopes from you.
Great luck to your channel in the future.

I follow your channel very keenly, I find so much knowledge and enthusiasm and diversity in you as a film critics which I hardly find in most of the so called cinema critique in India especially if out outside (othr part of the globe).
Being a Film student and lover of true cinema n it's asthetic I true found this piece so meaningful worth watching and sharing.
    Keep inspirating us.

PLEASE START CRITIQUING FILMS!! You are so right. There is almost never an insightful discussion on the craft of a film in reviews (esp Bollywood film reviews). Your analysis is always on point and extremely thought-provoking for me. I feel you would be an amazing film critique! Please start doing it!!!

Terrific video, when I saw the thumbnail I was repulsed by my opinion on film Criticism, then I challenged myself to watch it and I'm glad I did. This video gave me a new perspective. Amazing work.👌

I used to be one of those people. I used to make reviews on UA-cam on just blockbusters. I did that because I thought i was different because i watched a lot of movies but I stopped a year ago, I thought my channel wasn't growing because of my language skills or technical skills and I just wondered. But you have enlightened me, seriously. This doesn't mean I'll start making my shitty reviews again but I will watch more movies and watch them more carefully. This video gave me chills

    Dear Cinema beyond entertaiment,
I've always admired your work. The extreme insight you offer has never failed to amaze me. I think it's time for us viewers to know about you (the creator). A video on yourself and how you came to acquire such knowledge on cinema perhaps? ;).
    Thank you

Only I wish you would pace down the narration a bit. The visuals are pleasing and nobody would mind seeing them a little longer with a slower pace.
Looking forward to more of your videos.

Another awesome video. While watching this, I was hoping to see a clip of that pratik borade guy in the section of '20 year olds with internet calling themselves reviewers' section, but then I realized he is not even worthy of getting included there, considering he doesn't even talk about the film for like 95% of the video.

This video works like a friggin inspirational video! Love it!
I believe it is equally important to disagree with your critics/analysts as they bring in their pre-conceived notions in their analysis. Debates are important with analysts because then you're like "I am gonna see it for myself and decide what he wants to say."
I mean not everybody is gonna know the snow/rain ~ Villenueve/Scott bit. Someone may interpret it as something else. I remember my teacher once analysed a rack focus in a two-shot as a metaphor for "Past & Present" & I couldn't find myself agreeing to him. Sometimes, a rack focus could only mean a rack focus. Or maybe not.
What I am trying to say is that the filmmaker may/may not have thought of doing something deliberately. But the analysts/critiques probably read too much into it.
I just wanted to project my banter somewhere. Hehe.

    • @CinemaBeyondEntertainment
      @CinemaBeyondEntertainment  6 років тому +2

Yes of course, the director may or may not have intended the interpretation audience made through the reading of the film. But authorial Intent matters for very less once it is out in the public. That's why you could either read Mad Max Fury Road either as a feminist film or as film against slavery... The rack focus may just mean rack focus or in the context in which it happens, it can be looked as a bridging of present and past. That's why analysis of an art form exists...to find new meaning so the text grows outside its boundaries of creation. The argument of reading too much into it should be examined against a simple question. Are you making this question for every kind of analysis and analogies? If NO, then are you not making this argument out of convenience? Bad pieces of work have one common thing... They don't grow over time. Why? Because there is nothing to read between the lines of the text.
