- While working on the master tape of the second of three podcasts in my series, Neil Diamond 2000: The Joe Jackson Interview, I came across this clip which as a stand-alone may be of interest to not only fellow Neil Diamond fans but also to songwriters. It tells of the genesis of one of his greatest songs.

Even if it's really difficult to make a choice between all his wonderful songs, I think this one has a special place in my heart.
The emotion is very deep when I listen to it. Even if english is not my language (I'm French), I can feel how painful it must be for him to leave New York, the place where he was " born and raised " as he said.
The fact to understand his feeling in that song is due to his fabulous talent to find the right words, to write wonderfully and to share with a great talent the emotion through an exceptional voice.
Love, love, love that song and Neil's voice ❤ ...

@@catherinemccullough299 I believe Neil said "heard" both in the song and in the interview. The other person made a mistake to think it was "hurt" instead of "heard." After all, it is "I am, I said" - and he said it - and no one heard it, not even the chair.
