  • This is a section from my upcoming podcast, Neil Diamond The Joe Jackson Interview 2002 Part Three. I am working on editing the master tape but feel that many fans of the movie 'The Jazz Singer' would like to hear Neil talk, with barely suppressed anger, about how much he hated making that movie! He also talks about "Larry" Olivier, whom he describes as "the greatest actor of his time." Me, I'd opt for Brando! Enjoy.

It was a great movie . So sad you didn’t enjoy it Neil . We all loved you in it . You and Lucie Arnaz had incredible chemistry .it’s one of my top 5 movies of all time. I remember mum and dad making me watch the original jazz singer . That’s America scene that’s stretching to the sky. I’m an Aussie and when I here coming to America I get goose bumps . Anyway wonderful interview

I was only very young when I first saw the movie ( born in 1970 ) and so ( being young ) found it dull and boring. But over the years as I was exposed to Neil Diamonds music and voice more and more from radio and television, I grew to love his music and voice as I'd grown more mature and older myself. Now I love Neil Diamond and find The Jazz Singer an endearing classic jazz music movie that I don't mind at all rewatching over and over once in a while. Thankyou Neil Diamond. I personally don't regret that you made that movie and now I love your music too. 🙏❤

So interesting that so many critics at the time of it's release panned the movie and some of the acting. The Jazz Singer will always have a special place in my heart. Neil Diamond was my mother's favorite artist and I have such fond memories of watching this version with my family. To many of us, it is a classic. I would have never known from watching this film that Mr. Diamond thought that acting was so difficult. His music is timeless. Nice to know that he was so honest about discussing what he didn't like or felt he wasn't great at.

It's hard to pull off acting or anything that isn't what you do, and drains your soul and energy. Had Sir Laurence Olivier been told to sing and pull off a massive concert like Neil Diamond for 70 days, he would have hated that, as well. And would Sir Laurence Olivier have quit, unlike Neil Diamond?

Ah well it's too bad he didn't do more films with music. Glen Campbell did two that i know of, one of which was a cartoon.... one of my favorites actually by Don Bluth.
but he it's not too late! someone get the word out to Neil to get on board with some old school animation! lots of up-and-comers out there outshining disney left and right. If it puts the music out there AND helps some infuse some new blood into the this dying industry, he might go for it! Especially if the music was more like his older stuff from the 60s.
if LARRY can swim laps every day in his 80s, surely Neil can do some voice acting ((this is all tongue in cheek btw..... but i can dream.)

I think Neil miss the great opportunity to go to acting more often so that he got used to eventually.
There are many examples of musicians that became actor like Elvis or Sinatra.

In retrospect,"The Jazz Singer" wasn't that bad-I thought Neil gave a decent performance.
