- the filly, rachel alexandra ridden by calvin borel wins the 134th preakness stakes
Rachel Alexandra won the 134th running of the Preakness Stakes, becoming the first filly to win the second leg of The Triple crown since 1924.
The female horse took the early lead and held on at the end of the 1 3/16 miles at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Calvin Borel, who rode Mine That Bird in the Kentucky Derby, switched to Rachel Alexandra and guided her to a sixth straight victory.
Rachel Alexandra beat Mine That Bird, ridden by Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith, by a length. Musket Man finished third.
She paid $5.60, $4.60 and $3.60.
Mine That Bird paid $6.60 and $4.80
Musket Man returned $5 on a show bet.

She the real thing, a champion "super-filly" in the Ruffian mold. A big, long, tall, racer that like's to run from the front and away from the field. I love watching her and I hope she can enjoy something Ruffian could not...a long life and career with many happy years both on and off the track.
Great clip! I love Calvin Borel because he's so verbose after a big win. He's so much fun! :)
She was photographed in Vogue magazine. She really is stunning.
I could watch this over and over...and I DO. She is incredible. What a match race it would've been with her and Zenyatta! OR her, Zen, Ruffian, Rags to Riches, Eight Belles, Regret, Winning Colors!
Don't forget Lady's Secret
My money would have been on Ruffian, my favorite horse of all time!!!!
and the filly did it! My favorite part.
Look at those stallions chasing that girl!
RA -- such an amazing horse.
And I remember Mine That Bird so well from the Derby 💛
Simply the best... people can say would of, could have, this and that about IF she would have one the Kentucky Derby, but the fact is.. she was amazing !! There is no doubt she could have won the Derby.
her gender had nothing to do with it. the amazing fact is that she won from the 13th post positon. it's harder for most horses to win from and outside post position. fact is, she could race any race, any gate, any position, any jockey. she never did worse than 2nd, and when she did come in second it was by a nose or a head.
Announcer: ".....Taking on the boys...."
Taking on the Boys is RIGHT!!!! Hahaha!!!
Queen of the Preakness!!!! Go Rachel Alexandra!!!!
Would have loved to see a Zenyatta and Rachel matchup at 1 1/4.
For Calvin to get off the derby winner to ride Rachael in the Preakness shows how much he appreciated that horse
Three things you gotta notice about this race:
1) Rachel got a rough start; not only did she break on the far outside, she started on the wrong lead. (1:18)
2) Big Drama hit the first turn four out on the track; tough to believe that was coincidence considering he broke from post #1. Not unreasonable to suspect that Velasquez was trying to force RA to take that first turn wide. (1:18)
3) Despite the rough start and the discomfort of the muddy Pimlico surface, Rachel still won. Pretty amazing.
She would've won the Derby, no doubt.
a 3 year old horse is still a juvenile, and for a filly to beat the boys, and coming from the far outside, and still wins, wow! girl power! she is younger than Zenyatta so,it is hard to compare the two in 2009.
And an amazingly short time later, Pioneer of the Nile's son American Pharoah evened things up a bit.
The thing about Thoroughbreds is that they're bred, born, raised, and trained to run. Most of the time, this means they end up being extremely skittish and unwilling to stand still. Proper training, training to desensitize and teach true respect would eliminate the "big drama." Pardon my pun. Of course, people need to start understanding that TBs aren't machines that are purely for their owner rich fast, they're animals.
sorry for my wording error in the last one.
And yeah, Rachel Alexandra is a great racehorse. Girl power! :)
Rachel! We're praying hard for you!
i was there - it was crazy!!!!
Such a beautiful dame ❤
Fantastic Race
excellent film. very interesting for those of us in the seat of northern Greenville SC horse country.
Mine that bird was so close but he still ran a great race
I agree. I really love Rachel and Ruffian. my two favorite horses,
💛😥
Calvin Borel is the regular rider for RA so he had a choice to make and wisely picked RA. Jockeys have agents that book their mounts and usually ride for a trainer that will give a jockey "first call" on the trainers horses.
wow great effort by both MTB & RA. :O
If the Preakness was the same length as Derby, MTB catches her, the Kentucky Derby is 2000meters the Preakness 1911m watch that race again and tell me if that extra 89meters wouldn't have made a difference for MTB..
I've got to say I'm impressed with Big Drama. He stayed with her for 8 1/2 f, and only fell back 7 lengths. As compared to Da' Tarra's last place in the Woodward. Munnings was also impressive in the Haskell at 7 lengths back got 3rd. It's pretty obvious that the 3yo's this year are much better than the older horses, except for Macho again, Well Armed, Zenyatta.
Yes, the filly was magnificent, but it sure looks like a mile and a half will be tough for her - gotta like the chances for Mine That Bird in the Belmont!
Nick Zitto is a good Horse Trainer specially when it come to Belmont Stakes he always send a horse Longshot to WIN like Birdstone and DA TARRA!..agree or disagree.... pennyondime95
There are only two class horses in this year's Triple Crown campaign! RA and MTB. The speculation surrounding the upcoming Belmont Stakes will be as good as any build-up for a good NFL division championship. My gut feeling is that MTB will have sufficient room to close in on RA, just as his father did in chasing down Smarty Jones in the 2004 Belmont.
love that phillie!!!
MTB showed he is a very good horse and not a one hit wonder. RA is a great horse. I hope they both run the belmont.
listen i m tired of people sayin mine that bird would catch rachel or rough trip or wrong jockey etc...first hats off to the bird he has proved that hes got heart, love the horse(being the smallest in the field)he is def somethin special...yea he did charge towards her but,i think if the distance was longer calvin would have rated the race differently with rachel...would be a good match at belmont...son of birdstone againts the superfilly...i m going!!!there will be 150 00
Zenyatta has never run on turf. She ran on Synthetics. I would've loved to see her run on turf though.
I don't understand... please explain to me how is calvin borel ride "mine that bird" for kentucky derby and win, Oak and Filly with Alexandra.. How is the relationship between rider and horse? My thought is that riders typically just ride one horse and stick with that horse till they get fired or replaced. Who calls the shot? Mine that bird and alexandra have two different owner but what do they share? Confused! My first time actually taking interest in horse race.. Thanks
Edgar Prado just seems to have bad luck in the Preakness...
last in the 2009 running...
and Barbaro in 2006...
I hope that Sea the Stars (looking like a superstar) wins the Arc then takes on Rachel (she's just great) in the BC, but I fear it won't happen.
Completely.
Maybe Mike had a misjudgment on pace with MTB. You can see in the stretch on how much he was pushing his horse though..
I also want to add Jockeys change mounts or choose which horse they think may be the better when given options...I still have respect for Borel.
fb?
I agree...seems like a similar ride for Mike on MTB here to Mike's 2010 BCC ride on Z...moved a little too late from a little too far back, but would've done better if he'd moved a bit sooner.
AND THE PHILLY DID IT!!!!!!!
It's FILLY, not Philly. I think I know this person's favorite baseball team!
Im with Mike Smith if that race was a 1 mile and quarter Mine that Bird catches her.
I think she could've won the derby but the Belmont would've been too much for her to get. Might've been close though.
Mile and a quater day would be different
I think if Calvin Borel had ridden Mind That Bird, he would have won. He was taken too wide
Now, that he's won the Arc, I doubt, it. And after what happened to poor George Washington, I understand many Europeans are worried about the artificial track.
Bull, I saw this race from another angle and Mine That Bird did so much running around and through, if he'd had a straight shot like Rachael A he would have won I personally think he was held back on purpose and I hate Calvin Borel to this day for deserting MTB. Rachael A is a gorgeous horse and a winner no doubt, but MTB will always be my favorite.
Held back on purpose?? Based upon what, exactly?
Bad ride again in a big race
:) dude u dont know what u are talking about... im sure u are not in the business .. your love to MTB blinds you.... sure he won the derby... but the girl just beat him Preakness.... she took the lead, she set the pace, a fast pace BTW. she shouldered the race..... but the bird couldt catch and match her.... Foolish Pleasure won the derby in 1975 HOWEVER the big story was RUFFIAN as it is now the big story is RACHEL ALEXANDRA. show some respect...
he was not going to catch her, she basically was playing coming down the stretch and would have lengthened her stride at any moment and kept MTB easily behind, she won easily could have won by 5 lengths if pushed and 10 lengths if she took to the track. MTB's ONLY chance is the MUD
there is no doubt in my mind that Zenyatta would defeat rachel Rachel alexandra
true
I think that if the race was 100 feet longer MTB would have taken it. Would have been an interesting Belmont if MTB had won.
I laugh so fucking hard when I read this I told you Racheal was a SUPER FILLY your horse has not won since May, Seabiscuit my ass.....lol My Filly just won again today, beat older colts she is horse of the year !
Who won the Derby? RA sure didn't - wasn't even in the race - the BIG STORY is MINE THAT BIRD
Negative, Ghost Rider.
Summer Bird is the reason there would have been no 12th TC winner. MTB couldn't beat him at that distance.
he hasn't won since May
Susan Wilde, I have to agree with you on one point-I hate Cal the midget. I had no respect for him to begin with. But he managed to make any possible respect I might've had for him in future fly out the window when he bailed on MTB. I didn't think MTB was that great of a horse, but still.
i think he chose to ride alex. because he had been her jockey before he had been MTB's. plus he really loved alex. so if he had ridden MTB he would in a way been bailing on alex.
Jocks usually pick the horse they think is gonna win
well yes of course. who wouldnt want to win? but he also was riding alex way before MTB. thats all i am trying to say.
Calvin stated that Rachel Alexandra was the greatest horse he's ever rode. The regular jock for MTB wasn't Calvin in the beginning, he got lucky with the KY derby mount. He went back to MTB in the Belmont but didn't win. I don't blame him at all, never questioned it.
Susan and Jayne don't know what they're talking about. Baseless "hate".
what race did u watch???? She won it easily..... period. stop the he is a closer he has got a new rider crap. he is not the best SHE is the best.... show some respect to this supernatural lady.... count yourself lucky that u watched her so u have a story to tell your grandchildren....
