  • A horse trained by Bob Baffert was euthanized on the track after going down with injury and unseating his jockey during a race on the Preakness undercard on Saturday. Havnameltdown, the 4-5 favorite, broke slowly from the rail during the sixth race, the Chick Lang Stakes, allowing Gaffalione and Ryvit to establish command up front. Havnameltdown and jockey Luis Saez were able to move into a stalking position by the first quarter of a mile. Approaching the stretch, Havnameltdown stumbled and threw Saez off his back while Ryvit was able to continue on and draw clear of late-running Prince of Jericho. Havnameltdown continued running around the final turn in some distress. The 3-year-old colt was looked at by veterinary staff before being euthanized.

    It's sad. A horse is an LLC, a company in itself. The horse dies, that LLC closes, and anther LLC is opened with another horse.

    They have completely changed the rules that say what kind of shoes the horses can wear. It used to be they could wear shoes with toe grabs, which the majority of horses did, or they could wear outer rim shoes. The toe grab shoes have a, as the name implies, toe grab but it is no more than a 1/2 inch in height. The outer rim shoes have a rim all of the way around the outside of the shoe. Either of these shoes gives the horses traction.
    Those shoes are now banned. The only shoes that the horses can wear now are flat, no toe grab and no rim. They are basically running with a flat aluminum plate on their foot. It gives zero traction. I have been watching videos of races and it scares me how many horses I have seen slipping because they can't get traction on flat shoes. I would be tempted to run my horses barefoot because they would have a better chance of getting some traction than what that flat plate gives them.

      It's the drugs. When a horse is injured and given pain killers and then worked out; the horse never fully heals and is much more likely to get injured and then put down. It's the drugs that are leading to most of these major injuries and deaths

      @@marysueeasteregg I talked to a farrier and he said that all that they can wear are just plain flat shoes. Their justification is that toe grabs and such are what cause injuries in horses. Years from now someone is going to look back and realize that they messed up, big time, but how many horses will die before they fix it.

      Horses need all 4 legs. Vets said surgery not an option. That's all that can be done is to end their suffering.

    • @marysueeasteregg
      @marysueeasteregg Рік тому +3

      Many horses incur fractures and are saved. But fractures vary a great deal in type and in severity.
      As poster Allison Lange says, horses need all 4 legs functioning. They are not like cats, dogs (or humans) who can live quality lives with a poorly functioning or even amputated leg.
      Horses have surprisingly poor circulation in their legs. This impedes healing in some cases, especially if there has been
      damage to the blood vessels. Gangrene/necrosis is consequently a big danger in some types of fractures, esp. compound (open) fractures which would almost certainly result in amputation in a dog/cat.
      Horses cannot lie on their sides for extended times; their weight cuts off circulation. Lungs, heart and intestines do not function properly in a horse that is down for 24 hours or so.
      Fractures in the upper legs, pelvis or shoulder (this was a lower leg injury, I am pretty sure) are almost always automatic euthanasia cases because a cast cannot be applied to provide proper stablization.
      Because of favoring an injured leg, many horses recovering from leg fractures will develop laminitis, a painful and often progressive inflammation of the hoof tissues. This is what happened to 2006 Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro; his serious fractures healed, but he developed laminitis in other feet. (Laminitis is a major cause of equine death in general, not "just" in injured horses. Triple Crown winners Secretariat and Affirmed both were put down due to laminitis. The condition cannot always be gotten under control/cured, and advanced cases are agonizing to the horse.)
      Havameltdown was a multiple graded stakes winning colt; he would have had some stud value. The fact that he was put down on the track, not even taken to the barn or hospital for evaluation, is clear indication that his injury was not survivable.

    • @mikeuyeda2330
      @mikeuyeda2330 Рік тому +2

      He maybe would have had a slight chance of survival if he did not run on. It is on UA-cam and the leg was flopping around and horribly broken with dirt getting in the wound. An open fracture like that is the end! And that is that! So sad.

      Unfortunately when a horse breaks a leg, it is very rare that horse will not need to be put down. Racing or not. Horses on ranches that step in gopher holes are put down due to the fact that horses need all four legs and due to that, the leg never properly heals. It’s horrid. It’s heartbreaking. But in a situation such as a broken leg, the most humane thing to do is euthanize

    "How can you get to that point when we can't talk to the horses?" We're getting close to talking with horses through AAC. We've been doing it with disabled children for a long time. Recently, people are using it with dogs and cats. I've seen one cow starting. There's probably others I'm not aware of. And, yes, there's at least one horse. What they have to say is sometimes surprising. Though you can see how this could be a big advantage with your racehorse, I don't think we'll find everything they have to say convenient.
