- Calvin Borel made the right choice and history was made May 16 at Pimlico, when for the first time the Kentucky Oaks (gr. I) winner not only ran in the Preakness Stakes (gr. I) but won the race in convincing fashion. Rachel Alexandra won the middle jewel of the Triple Crown by a length over Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Mine That Bird.
The week following her win in the Oaks, Rachel Alexandra was purchased by Jess Jackson and Harold McCormick and transferred from trainer Hal Wiggins to Steve Asmussen. Borel, who had ridden both Rachel Alexandra in the Oaks and Mine That Bird in the Derby, was asked to continue riding the filly and he agreed.
Mine That Bird's trainer, Chip Woolley, picked up Mike Smith on the Derby winner.

Mine That Bird…one of the best closers of all time. Incredible speed at the end. He found a lot of traffic on the way to the top. Otherwise he would have won.

What? Dumb. The race was 1 3/16 for everyone. The goal isn't to save enough in the gas tank to "be coming late". The goal is to get to the finish line first. According to your rationale, Zenyatta would lost about 17 of her 20 races had the races all been 80 yds shorter. LOL.

Bird was no fluke. He got top 3 finishes in all the triple crown races. I think Mike Smith cost him the Preakness

@Jerald Hawkins, I won that race. Had to go with Blame that day, he was 5 for 5 at Churchill. All my friends were mad at me because I told then Blame would win the night before the race. Too sentimental for Zenyatta

Easy to tell the diiference for Mine That Bird in the Derby and Stakes, Jockey rode him perfect in the Derby and had tons of luck, Jockey made terrible errors and had no luck in the Stakes. His final stretch kick was there, but by the time it could be used it was too late. To try and use a late run on the inside again was never going to work, should have just let him run wide and see if he made it, my guess is he would have. A truly amazing kick on that horse.
No shame in finishing second to the brilliant Rachel Alexandra.
A horse SHOULD have good kick when they crawl the first 85% of the race.
'09 Preakness Stakes entries... EVERY Thoroughbred is a decedent of Northern Dancer. Well except the Big Drama
The 'Dancers stud fee started at $10,000 fee in 1965 for alive foal. When he retired at the age of 26 (1987) mare owners paid $1 million for a breeding, without any guarantee. Unheard of even today, more then 30 years later.
Today the question is not if a race horse has Northern Dancer in its pedigree, but if does NOT have it. He has sired a total of 146 stakes winners.

If Mine that Bird got a similar trip as the Derby he wins this race, he was in the 6 path, while RA was in the 2 path with 4 length lead as the turned for home..too much ground to make up..
I still regret not seeing the clash for the ages that season Rachel Alexandra versus Zenyatta. How did they avoid each other ?

He was not close... bow down to Rachael.. she broke from 13 hole ,the bird 2 hole save ground and still ran out of ground. Rachael set all the fractions and destroyed them.

Horrible race by Mike Smith. Mine that Bird had to go way outside and just ran out of real estate. If the filly was so good, she should have ran in the Belmont. My heart goes out to Mine that Bird. Great little horse who just couldn't overcome his bad rider.
Bad ride, for sure, but Rachel beat older horses in the Woodward at Saratoga, which is more impressive.
I'm sure if it were up to Rachel, she would've been happy to run in the Belmont. Unfortunately, that wasn't her decision to make.
Wow, Pioneer of the Nile had his flank handed to him by Rachel Alexandra and all the other horses. Well, at least his son would go on to do what he couldn't.
His son did not have to face a Rachael Alexandra.. so keep that in mind.

😫 wow. 11yrs later I realized Mindthatbird could of won. Mike takes them out during the last stretch, which not every horseis up to. Calvin rides the rail and cuts distance, the horse still has the legs to pull all the way through.
If you don't have the talent to carve your own trip from the front.. then you take what's given to you.. mike was denied the rail, everyone stayed on it unlike the derby which is also was another 1/16 in distance. Also rachael did not handle the track well and still destroyed them. Improve your prospective son.
Of course he had the legs. He crawled the first 85% of the race. He's just not as good as Rachel.

Rachel Alexander The Great!..R.A.T.G!.. this version of rachael is truly the best and horse of the year bar none!.. I remember the cry babies in Zenyatta camp that year complaining about we were robbed!..YEAH RIGHT! It was plain to everyone in the country that this campaign by Rachael was leading in the votes and sentiments and Zenyatta had to ship to meet her ,the camp had their chance and was scared that Zenyatta would have been beaten. (punks)!
Zenyatta's BC Classic win was the best win on the 09' resumes of either her or Rachel. But if forced to chose I would have to agree that Rachel's 09' campaign was better than the campaign Zenyatta put together that year or in any other year. However, taken collectively, Zenyatta's Horse of the Year 2010 campaign along with her HoY runner-up campaigns of 08' and 09' are superior to Rachel's single year masterpiece.
In short, between the two great female stars, Zenyatta owned the singular performance and/or accomplishment with her 09 BC Classic(and I can argue the 2nd best performance between them was Zenyatta's BC Classic 2nd in 2010, Rachel' 09 was the single best year either one had, and that Zenyatta has the more complete career.

Zenyatta owners denied the public of one of the best showdown in racing history by dodging rachael... however he shipped to try and win the classic agaisnt blame... which blame had the better year against better competition and got the best of her( favouritism got her h.o.y over a horse that beat her) Zenyatta could not run that way against super talent like rachael and beat her... she would need distance help to catch her.
I still can't stand the fact that Calvin dumped the bird to ride another horse. You have to wonder what may have been otherwise. He was running her down easily.

@@WeFreestyleForever yeah ok Rachel Alexandra won the Kentucky Oaks by over 20 lengths and beat Bird in the Preakness but sure go on and say that Bird was the better of the 2. Calvin himself said that he would've felt confident on RA in the Derby against the colts, Bird included in that lineup. Only one person in the world rode both of those horses and come decision time, he went with the better of them. Jockeys gotta make a living too
Very simple. Rachel was a push button horse and uncomplicated. Mine that Bird the jockey needed a lot of luck and hope for a traffic free and clean trip. He made the right choice.
Running her down? LOL. He lost. He didn't run her down. He was inferior to her. Of course he had "late run" --thats what happens when you walk the first 85% of the race. The goal isn't to "come fast late". The goal is to "get to the finish line first".
In her Prime She had too Much Speed and Talent over Zenyatta...She also had better Numbers than Zenyatta....Just do not see any way Zenyatta would have been able to catch and reel in Rachel....And if Rachel had a comfortable Trip she probably "effortlessly" holds off Zenyatta with energy left in the tank
I agree. In 2009, Rachel was the better horse. Rachel's decline happened quickly, but in 2009, she beats Zenyatta 3 of 4 times if they race 2 at 9F and 2 at 10F.

That makes ZERO sense. Jockey's don't just "floor" their horses from the time the gate opens and have them sprint until they run out of gas. They meter their speed. Rachel's jockey woulda just started her run later, and won the same way. You were obviously very new to horse racing when you wrote that.
