Favorite race ever. The triple crowns in 2015 and 2018 were cool but nothing will ever beat the drama of this race for me. Still absolutely crushed I'll Have Another never got his shot at the Belmont.
I love Larry Collmus!! I love how enthusiastic he gets in the stretch, it gives me the biggest goosebumps. I have a feeling IHA would've won that triple crown if he wasn't hurt. What an incredible horse he was!
No question he would've won the Belmont if he hadn't been injured. Bodemeister was his only competition, and he had already beaten him twice. Just think though--if I'll Have Another had been born in a different year, Bodemeister probably would've won the Triple Crown. Those two were just far and away better than the rest of the pack.
@@laurastuhler4791 by Empire Maker and has plenty of stamina in his bloodline. If he got a generous enough pace, he could've definitely wired a I'll Have Another-less field.
Wow what a duel. I was jumping up and down when IHA came charging down the stretch. I had chills. Bode really made it challenging. Also incredible call by the announcer.
I literally watched all the triple crown races since 2000 or 1990 (I did both on separate occasions just can't remember which one I did first) and I remember this race stood out to me i kept coming back to watch it.
My Favorite race of all time and one of my favorite horses. IHA had he been able to race once more and finish in top 3 would have to be considered one of the GOAT's. Without that third race we can only speculate, but he had that potential. That said they did the morally correct thing to protect the athlete (horse) and I wish more owners and coaches in other sports would do the same. Incredible race I'll never forget.
Well with 2 horses that close to each other crossing the start/finish line (at least ten one hundreds of a second) or heads apart, you bet it is the best call ever!!
yes, IHA and Mario gave their all, but IHA went down early for it :(:( - -- but he had quite a time doing it; to have loved and lost is far better than to have never loved at all.
still all these years later and it's still so exciting! Especially cause my horse turned on the burners to win! The NBC guy so amazing calling the race!
Damn, “I’ll Have Another” was something special. First time I got emotional when I found out he couldn’t go on due to a hairline fracture. Ill never ever forget The Kentucky Derby & Preakness 2012.
I loved this colt. I won a ton of money on him in the Santa Anita Derby and again in the Kentucky Derby. He was such a game horse and I was crushed when he had to be retired due to his injury. Who knows what would have happened in the Belmont had he been able to run, but I believe he would have had a say in the outcome. What's difficult for me to believe is that nobody in the US would pay more than $3m for him to stand at stud and he is now standing in Japan.
I'll Have Another has been the only triple crown hopeful this century (yes, I'm including Smarty Jones and Big Brown) that I thought had a legitimate chance at winning it all. If he could overcome a pace that went totally against him and in favor of Bodemeister and still win, the Belmont was his race to lose.
+Samuel Pérez García I don't know man. .what Stevens did to PG in the 2001 Derby was a travesty. Even after watching AP (one of my favorites), I still think PG might have been the best horse in the 21st.
AP impressed me so much in the Arkansas Derby that I had no doubts he would sweep the TC. No other horse has given me that impression in 20+ years (I'll Have Another impressed me only after the Preakness win). There have been many great ones so far in this century, like Ghostzapper, Wise Dan, Zenyatta, etc., but I think AP was the best of the bunch. Of course, I'm not counting the Eurpean horses since I hardly ever watch them race, I just mean American horses.
After yesterday can't help to think how good of chance I'll Have Another would have had at the triple crown. He and Bodemeister in a class by themselves in this race.
I wanted to see super Mario Guitterez win the triple crown so bad. He won me a boatload on that derby. “Can I’ll have another get there?” Is probably my favorite horse call of all time
I was a fan of I'll Have Another because of Mario Guttierez who rode here in Vancouver at Hastings Park. After the Derby, I was sucked in and leapt for joy when IHA won the Preakness in that breathtaking stretch run. Yes, he would have won the Belmont. Bodemeister wouldn't have been able to get 1 1/2 miles. Too bad, but Mario has a nice career now.
We just had a bay filly born this week by I'll Have Another out of Chalky (IRE), and the foal is all legs! Last year, Paul Reddam has reacquired I'll Have Another. I'll glad that such a great horseman as Mr. Reddam will look after I'll Have Another once he retires completely in the coming years, but for now, I'm super glad he's back in the US, and standing in California.
This race brings back a memory which now makes me laugh, but at the time I almost fell out of my chair (while watching the race on an outside big screen at the local race track) when "I'll Have Another" caught "Bodemeister" to win. On my Superfecta tickets (I bet the same thing twice) I had "Bodemeister" winning with "I'll Have Another" second - I correctly picked the third and fourth place finishers, so for a few seconds I felt it was won - and suddenly it wasn't. Oh well... I did like "I'll Have Another" and was disappointed when that beautiful horse was pulled from the Belmont Stakes - though happy that the owners/trainers made the prudent decision to protect their horse from what might have been a severe injury.
Agreed however I have much respect for O'Neill not pushing him onto what would have been one epic national stage. He cared more for the horse than for the hype. Bonus points in my book! :)
These two horses were truly competitive athelete's they were always battling to the finish line I was predicting if I'll Have Another didn't get hurt they would battled to the end in the Belmont but we would've gotten our 12th wonder back in 2012
He was roper dopering the competition! Tire em out, let em think they're cool, then he just HAS ANOTHER! :):) reminds me of sea biscuit - I love just love horses, more than people!! :):):)
Bodemeister should've won? I'll Have Another proved not once BUT TWICE that he was the better horse... So, how much did you lose on Bodemeister? I'm proud to say that I had $100 on IHA in the derby and $500 on him in the preakness (also had the trifecta 9-7-6)... If not for the injury, he would have won the triple crown...
My neighbor’s daughter worked for the owner of I’ll Have Another, so I kinda had a personal stake in this horse. It’s just a shame they couldn’t run him in the Belmont. He would’ve been the 12th TC winner.
I’ll Have Another, was the only horse I ever got emotional about. For the team, what an emotional roller coaster, from knowing you have an extremely special horse, that seems to just know when to kick it in, to hearing of the fracture. The only good out of all this, is the other poor bastard owner, didn’t have to witness, for a third time, his horse get run down by IHA in the stretch. …….and I’ll never forget that name either.
I laid my whole check on I'll have another in the derby. $450 brought me Close to $7500. Then he wins the preakness and I walked away decent. When I found out they scratched him in the Belmont I was mad af!!! Still have mixed feelings on that decision and why it happened.
Watched it live. One of the greatest races ever. I can’t believe it was 10 years ago
WOW....one of the best calls of a horse race I've ever heard. And what a phenomenal race this was.
Look back at the history of races, this one is at the top of the list of exciting races. I'll have Another is my favorite horse of all time...
Favorite race ever. The triple crowns in 2015 and 2018 were cool but nothing will ever beat the drama of this race for me. Still absolutely crushed I'll Have Another never got his shot at the Belmont.
Collmus with one of the best calls ever in sports. Absolutely nailed that stretch run.
Met I'll Have Another awhile back at Ballena Vista Farm here in California. Got some cool pics with him. He's HUGE! What a beauty! 😍🐎
Bodemeister vs I'll Have Another will go down as one of the best horse rivalries of all time in my life anyway
Not really a rivalry they didnt raced against each other nearly enough
You have not seen a lot. The best was the 4 horse deadhit in 2009
After 2 weeks they raced again and a 2horse deadhit happen for 1st the other 2 deadhit for 2nd plcr
Blind luck and havre de grace has been the best rivalry in your lifetime
Yep those were some very exciting races.
Absolutely incredible horse and race! and that call is just special. I keep coming back now and then to re-live it.
Me too
What a FANTASTIC Call that was.....announcer loses his voice at the end, priceless....still get chills listening to it!
Smarty jones
Losing his Voice MAKE THE RACE LIKE A THRILLER...GREAT CALL
I never get tired of watching I'll Have Another.
His late kick is the best I've ever seen.
I'll Have Another's turn of foot was absolutely breathtaking.
I love Larry Collmus!! I love how enthusiastic he gets in the stretch, it gives me the biggest goosebumps. I have a feeling IHA would've won that triple crown if he wasn't hurt. What an incredible horse he was!
Alexis The best race caller in the business is Larry Collmus.
He Definitely would have
Baffert's look of defeat at 2:22 priceless! lol
You like over zealous untalented race callers who want to be the center of attention?
@@loudini2695 You don't know that.
History says otherwise
Bodemeister was distance challenged, no chance he was winning the Belmont if he had run in it, even without I'll Have Another.
@@laurastuhler4791 by Empire Maker and has plenty of stamina in his bloodline. If he got a generous enough pace, he could've definitely wired a I'll Have Another-less field.
God everything about this video is so perfect, the call, the horse, everything
The image quality sucked. Too blury.
I know how it ends and it still blows my mind!
Michael Miller he didn't race
It's like I have to come back here once a year just to watch it and hear that call.
Now this is what we call a tremendous stretch kick.
Fabulous race, perfect call; probably as good as it ever gets!
My Favorite race of all time and one of my favorite horses. IHA had he been able to race once more and finish in top 3 would have to be considered one of the GOAT's. "can i'll have another get there .. here he comes here's the wire.. " best call ever in horseracing!
he went hysterical, ... that Larry Collmus, he was dying in his booth! ... best call ever.
What an amazing call. This race gives me goosebumps every time! Love it
was that the greatest call ever?
Well with 2 horses that close to each other crossing the start/finish line (at least ten one hundreds of a second) or heads apart, you bet it is the best call ever!!
when these horses give 100% for these races injuries will happen
yes, IHA and Mario gave their all, but IHA went down early for it :(:( - -- but he had quite a time doing it; to have loved and lost is far better than to have never loved at all.
Real quiet 1998
And the triple crown is on line! I cry when I see this! Hopefully 2014 has a Triple Crown!
California Chrome didn't manage to do so that year. But luckily, we still managed to see this thing happen twice in the following years.
One of my favorite horses, never raced as the betting favorite, ultimate underdog.
So heartbreaking. Had a boatload on Bode. Every time I watch the replay I hope he’s going to hold on.😄
What an awesome call. Gotta love the fanboy in him coming out at the end.
Pfff you guys are lame. This call gives me the chills it's so exciting! I love the energy!
still all these years later and it's still so exciting! Especially cause my horse turned on the burners to win! The NBC guy so amazing calling the race!
"The triple crown will be on the line at Belmont Park" best line. Wish we get to hear that often
Damn, “I’ll Have Another” was something special. First time I got emotional when I found out he couldn’t go on due to a hairline fracture. Ill never ever forget The Kentucky Derby & Preakness 2012.
Oh man I cried so much when I head about it. He was absolutely amazing and I’ll forever love his derby Preakness.
I loved this colt. I won a ton of money on him in the Santa Anita Derby and again in the Kentucky Derby. He was such a game horse and I was crushed when he had to be retired due to his injury. This was a FANTASTIC and THRILLING Horse Race. 😃😍
I love the names "Went The Day Well" and "Teeth of the Dog".
God it's hard to watch this and not think about what could have been......

I also chose AP after the Arkansas...and people thought I was crazy. But I hadn't seen something like that since maybe 2005 and Afleet Alex
But I still think Point Given would have proven superior to those horses if he hadn't been injured.
One of the greatest races of all time, I'll Have Another - my fav horse, definitely a triple crown winner that never got to win it
Larry Colmus' voice breaking at 100 yards is the best thing ever.
After yesterday can't help to think how good of chance I'll Have Another would have had at the triple crown. He and Bodemeister in a class by themselves in this race.
One more please
One of the greatest calls in Horse Racing history
I can't remember ( i haven't googled it yet) I'll Have Another scratched in the Belmont because of tendon issues right?
Heart Pumping Finish.. Great Race Call.... I LOVE Horse Racing
do horses actually have a will to win? i wonder (i dont want this other horse to beat me). Looks to me that IHA has a will to win
Bodemeister wouldn't have been able to get 1 1/2 miles. Too bad, but Mario has a nice career now.
The deep closing ability of I'll have Another I'm convinced the horse would've won the Belmont. It was built for the Belmont.
What a game little horse. So close to the Triple Crown, yet so far. Well, he's having fun in Japan.

wow, closing your eyes and just listening to this like you were in the 20s and pretending you bet your life on Ill have Another is pretty awesome lol
i love i'll have another.....i hope his offspring are champions as well
this made me a horse racing fan, great
Suprise Me it made me look at horse racing again
Mario is a local jockey here in Vancouver, everyone watched both races up here, we couldn’t believe it!

Nope, Bodemeister was never running in the Belmont, there was no chance he could get the extra distance.
Keep your eyes on the canuck! :)
He was roper dopering the competition! Tire em out, let em think they're cool, then he just HAS ANOTHER! :):) reminds me of sea biscuit - I love just love horses, more than people!! :):):)

The best race horse rivalry! Bode vs I ll have another!
It's a shame that I'll have another didn't get a chance to achieve the triple crow because of his injury.
Ill Have Another would have won the Triple Crown in my opinion ..... shame what tendonitis did to the poor horse that year ...
One of the best races I've seen in years. Boy the 2012 TC run stunk.
An $11,000 yearling sale. Amazing!
My neighbor’s daughter worked for the owner of I’ll Have Another, so I kinda had a personal stake in this horse. It’s just a shame they couldn’t run him in the Belmont. He would’ve been the 12th TC winner.

Which pixel is I'll Have Another?
What an amazing horse
What a late kick; solid horse
cant believe they scratched ill have another
Gameness level Affirmed.
Best stretch run call in horse racing history.
Ill have another is the triple crown winner in my opinion. Who could have beat him.
this horse was brilliant
I believe it was at least ten one hundreds of a second the difference!!
If there’s ever been a better call down the stretch from a announcer I’d love to hear it.
'Tiz Now' 2nd Breeder Classic call is my favorite.
One of the best, recent, Preakness Stakes.
no one told I'll Have that he wasn't supposed to win :) - the stubby legged little Rocky Balboa - ( the little train that could
Who is doing the call of this race
+nintendosupreme444 Larry Collmus.
Who is watching because the preakness is today?
I remember one day before the Belmont race when they said he wasn't going to race this horse was going to win the Belmont
Why did the horse not run the Belmont
The horse was injured prior to the race and had to be scratched.
Mario isn't just a flash in the pan, twice, after all.....
I laid my whole check on I'll have another in the derby. $450 brought me Close to $7500. Then he wins the preakness and I walked away decent. When I found out they scratched him in the Belmont I was mad af!!! Still have mixed feelings on that decision and why it happened.
His closing speed was unmatched. This horse had different type of ability woulda won the triple crown.
He had that extra gear nobody else had that year. It was liked Mario pushed a button and said "go" and the horse said, "okay." LOL
Wow! Brilliant jockeying for iha
The Little Chestnut Horse that could...
God I wish this horse was still able to race and have a second chance this year..
no ones talking about Mario ? or the cold grey Vancouver bc where he started out :(
“He went 3 quarters in 1 eleven and three”
No Ill Have Another had injured his leg. So he was pulled out last minute. He got injured so then he couldn't race so his owners retired him.
That style definitely would've helped in the long one I'm sure, too bad it wasn't to be. Could've been a real Affirmed/Alydar story.
Good one. Subbed.
"He ran down Bodemiester to win the Preaknes and the triple crown will be on the line at Belmont Park.
At 2:24, the white haired man, his face was priceless.
Bob Baffert, Bodemeister's trainer.
Samuel Pérez García It showed that Bodemeister was his horse.
If only Bodemeister had a trainer that could win the big one.
"And the Triple Crown will be on the line at Belmont Park!"
Actually...
It really sucked that Ill Have a another was pulled out last mo tue
"And the Triple Crown will be on the line at Belmont Park."
:'(
Which didn't happen.
