I hate Disney Star Wars but man, im so glad they kept Hayden as Vader. He got way too much shit for the prequels. He did a great job with the lines he was handed, but the lines were shit and he got blamed for it. His performance was as good as it possibly could be and I love him. Same with the guy who played Little Anakin. That poor kid got trashed for no good reason.
Sometimes the fans are a franchise's worst enemy, because they build things up in their heads and are then let down when the franchise doesn't meet their expectations, which can sometimes be unfairly high. I say that as a lifelong Star Wars fan.
It feels like Star Wars has been training Hayden to actually be like some super soldier. We know hes actually a good duelist and highly athletic and now this too.
Never understood why he had to do breath holds when a scuba system isn't THAT expensive. I mean I get it, one might argue "why pay for all that equipment when he can just hold his breath" but then "why hire a dive coach to train him to hold his breath when you can just rent scuba gear."
My guess would be that they didnt want all the bubbles that comes from exhaling to show. There is scuba gear that takes care of the air you exhale but the only ones I have seen are very big so you couldn't hide the the mouth piece in Vaders mask.
Especially considering that they were ALREADY IN THE TANK. They easily could have had a scuba line to the mask he was wearing, but chose not to for some reason.

SEALs and other SF type units use them as they recycle the air, to keep bubbles from forming from an exhale. Here, all they would have needed to do was have one way valves for each tube.

Great science fiction and fantasy writing existed before Star Wars and much of it served to be a huge influence for Lucas especially Frank Herbert’s Dune, Tolkien and H.G Wells to name but a few. Not trying to diminish his work in anyway what Lucas did with Star Wars was absolutely incredible but if you really delve into the history of science fiction there are many incredible writers who conceived of amazing stories and worlds with nothing but their own imagination. Heck even JK Rowling deserves a lot of credit for creating the world of Harry Potter, I don’t think people realise just how hard it is for somebody to create these unique worlds and actually a meaningful story that works within the rules of that world.
@@artofsam Keep in mind Lucas' most immediate influence were the Flash Gordon serials, and he wanted to make a modern adaptation of it, but couldn't get the rights. So he wrote his own space opera fantasy and well, you know the rest.

Even at that depth, he's too deep for that. The diapraghm can't compete with the water pressure, so he wouldn't be able to fully exhale. That would require something like a SCUBA system which pressurizes the air and forces it into your lungs, and then your exhale just goes out into the water as bubbles. Which would ruin the shot.
This is pretty cool. Doing things "old school" and having as much practical effect as possible. And with Haden doing actual breath holds, instead of just having a ring of water to make it look like he was actually in it. Both are legitimate ways of doing this and the latter is a pretty goof SFX trick. But going the route they did made it that much cooler. The fact that they got him to do the scene when ANYONE could have, given that we don't see his face clearly, is a nice touch and pretty respectful. Even though the original Vader was played by 3 different people. I wish I had a ton of money so I could make a fan film, even if it was only in the low 6 figures. If you want to see what can be done with minimal budget and have a very good cross-over short film ... check out "Batman: Dead End". It was done for $30k in 2003, approx $53k today.

Nope. An odd phobia I have is being submerged without something protecting my face! Give me a diving mask I can go under water. But just goggles? Nope.
It´s very achieveable. There is a simple technique you can try at home for fun. You lay down flat or sit, relax and then you start breathing in for 5 seconds and exhale for twice as long. You do this fo a couple of minutes every day and then after you try to hold your breath. You will get better every day and up to 3 minutes is very achieveable for the regular non smoking fit individual. The body uses up more oxygen if you move or swim, but sitting still it´s possible.

If you just get in some good deep breaths, inhale all the way, completely relax and understand you're alright and maybe release a little bit of what is held in very slowly to relax your lungs it's not so bad. Assuming your lungs are healthy and you get a normal amount of oxygen through your body otherwise it shouldn't be that bad. It can take a little practice, but not so bad.

Actually if you really want to get technical Star Wars Theory was the first to have Darth Vader in his Bacta tank in live action the way it was presented to us in Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Hayden wasn't in Rogue One - his face mould was used and aged up quite a bit, so that he looked like 41 year old Vader (Vader was 41 in A New Hope after all).
I'm so glad they cast Hayden Christensen as Darth Vader instead of another actor, he can play both Anakin and Vader perfectly

This is actual acting. Hayden actually learned the lightsaber combat choreography and learned to hold his breath just to act in movies/tv.
