Tommy Emmanuel is such a great teacher. We are all lucky that there's a UA-cam to watch, and that Tommy is on here. Never take UA-cam for granted. One the best inventions since the TV.
Well the show must go on....and only us guitar players notice.....we notice the recovery too. Thats the difference between a player and an entertainer.....in my opinion anyway
Tommy is such a generous teacher. He not only gives great insight, he talks about mistakes that he has made along the way and the gaps in his knowledge and how he filled them. When Tommy Emmanuel tells you about his mistakes and how he corrected them, it makes it much easier to forgive your own playing problems and press on. Even Doc Watson said that it took him 10 years to get fully comfortable with thumb independence. If Doc and Tommy feel they had to struggle a bit, the rest of us can go a bit easier on ourselves.
I wish I could afford a Maton like that one He’s playing. Absolutely wonderful! What a great instructor. There aren’t many professional artists out there that care enough to take the time to instruct so I tip my hat to you Sir. Thank you and know that what you are doing is appreciated.
Thanks for sharing your expertise Tommy Emmanuel! I was shocked when you mentioned Ted Green's book Chord Chemistry. I was gobsmacked as I had purchased a copy in the early middle 70's, hidden in my book library collecting dust for many years! I got it back out, took it to the printers and got it spiral bound and it now sits out front and centre for practice. I play left-handed which is a challenge getting thumb picks and learning Ted Greens chords. I am now practicing 4 hours+ per day. Kudos to you...
No Tommy. You can do what you like with it. What a great player. Thank you for taking the time to do this. So many wonderful musicians can't relate their information back to the beginner or intermediate level. We needed this.
I love to watch Tommy Emmanuel play guitar. The learning is going slow though because I am so entertained by just watching. I have been a professional guitar player for many years. Mostly in hard rock and heavy metal and Tommy has open my eyes up to a whole new type of playing. Very inspiring? 👍😎
Fingerstyle is a grueling study Its hard to make it look easy.....but it almost always comes.....good luck My only advice other than repitition is get tabs...you can get this whole class in guitar world june 2018...lol i swear they did not pay me to say this
i have watched so many of your videos and I am still amazed at not just your guitar skills, which are amazing, but the thing that stands out is your total love affair with the guitar. Please keep posting and look forward to seeing your show when you next visit the uk , from Garry in the UK
I can play pretty much every metallica song including lead, most megadeth stuff I just learned killing road solo and have known tornado of souls solo for years, hangar 18 you name it. Pantera hell yea! I am south of heaven \m/ I cant get my hands around this tune lol not even the easy version! Ill keep going though. Tommy you teach me stuff I never thought of, for free! Thanks a million brother, stay safe, stay rocking that guitar!
The everly brothers father was also a forefather to travis picking...often overlooked...him n chet were good friends Ike everly , merle travis ,chet atkins. The fingerstyle fathers
I can learn these tunes and play them well enough to entertain myself and a few others, but I still have no understanding of music and so cannot improvise. I wish I could unlock this knowledge.
Awesome and inspiring, as is everything Tommy does! The song is not by Chet Atkins as the description states although this particular arrangement might be by Atkins, it was written by Elizabeth Cotten, as @k2houija also points out below. It has frequently been mis-attributed to other artists and even copyrighted by some of them until the copyright was rightfully restored to Cotten. Chet Atkins was allegedly the first person to pay Cotten any royalties, although that was for another song.
Hallo Sir Mr. Emmanuel. Place to.meet you here on.your channel And Iam.really happy and feel lucky could watching your super fingerstyle.guitar show us your very Special lesson as an Expert and Proffessional Master Guitar Player. Iam Paul from Indonesia.. I can't play guitar but am really love to see and hear to any body who can playing guitar while singing. Excuse me to asking you one question Have you ever hear one of Indonesian guitar fingerstyle with the name of his channel was Alip Ba Ta ? He was one and the only fingerstyle who have been makes us really proud of him. I suggest you to find out about him and I really waiting for your reaction about him. Thank you very much , SIR. Love from Indonesia
He generally swaps between martins and d'addarios. Not sure what guage (but probably mediums for the deeper base notes). He advocates for trying a lot of strings and swapping brands frequently.
Got the basics from first episode down ; episode 2 , I'm supposed to work out freight train in several keys ??!!!!!!! In episode 2 ! I guess episode 3 is not going to happen !
im an intermediate guitar player and maybe more (I can play rithmic guitar/solos etc). But im an ABSOLUTE BEGINNER in this STUFF. Last week i started. I can pass the 1st bit. Thumb Independence is like climbing everest for the moment. Any advice? I can keep my thumb going alone without problems but when i start to play melody everything collapses.
NO CLUE when he goes into ' flat 9th , sharp 7ths .... ' , but I know when to shut up & listen . Want to learn to play the guitar , we're listening to the RIGHT one !
Lol im getting frustrated im still wotking out the basic arrangement....meanwhile....tommys tearin it up with his chord subs and time mods ugh... fingerstyle is tedius and slow....but it will come if ur determined.....sigh back to work. Happy new year yall
How come some of his high notes in this video sound bad? It seems to me he was in (relatively!) bad shape this day, or his guitar was not set up right. I'm not used to bad tones like this from Tommy. For example 1:201:322:125:09 . But thanks for the lesson anyway.
Can anyone explain to me what this fucking bullshit is? This isn’t real he makes it so easy. I don’t even know what key of C means, just know the first few basic chords. How do I even start to learn this stuff? Anyone have any advise for learning more after chords? I don’t really understand when he goes to things like D minor
So he starts demonstrating chords to find "where the melody is", you work out the melody with chords. Cool, basic open C, basic barre G7 3rd fret, basic barre Dm7 5th fret.... And then boom gone, different shape, inversion (that Dmin7 on 3rd fret), no more alternate bass etc and that s not even the start of the show. I mean seriously ... then the guys basically shows his improvisations on that song,,, So beginners, stay away from this or you might just give up on learning music.
Watdafuq this so confusing 😂 and i play guitar for years. I thought this was an easy song coz i can travis pick like dust in the wind. This is not for beginner guys. Go learn "forbidden love" if youre an absolute beginner in fingerpicking.
someone's chair is squeaking hardcore in this audio. You're Guitar World having a special recorded session with arguably the greatest guitarist of all time, and you overlook something as elemental as there is a GIANT FREAKING SQUEAKING CHAIR (I assume the one he's sitting on) ruining the entire audio!!??
Breathe, buddy. Nothing is ruined. It's a live video and an interview situation, not a studio recording. Or is there anything you can't understand what he says or learn because of "a oh my god, a CHAIR, ther's a CHAIR, and it squeakes!"?
I think i'm gonna stay at episode 1 for a bit.
Me too. Baby steps. Lol.
dude so truee. This episode frustrated me 😭😭
Yup! Me too
About a month ought to do it. :)
Me too

What a great teacher! I have only been playing for 1.5 years and I always anchor, just learned that way. Glad to hear him say how you “have to.” 😄

I've just learned "fraight train " and I love this tune. Thank you Tommy for this full of inspiration lesson.
15 minutes a day now I got it thanks to you Tommy you’re the best
Seeing Tommy in concert was one of the highlights of my gigging life. Purely brilliant.
Great stuff! There's a giant jump between episode 1 and 2 for sure.

I love it when a guitar lesson assumes you can already play a bit. There are so many absolute beginner lessons out there it's frustrating.
Sure. Because this isn't frustrating at all
@@hammill444 git gud
This lesson isnt intended for beginners....sorry bro ya gotta walk before you run.
So friggin true, I was just thinking the same thing.
Download the video, play on Vlc player, make it slower, and its easier to repeat.
You are a legend sir.
I'm working on this style now I never knew it was a bit complicated and so much fun I had mistaken it with finger picking.

Fingerstyle is a strange journey. just suck through it until it clicks and then you open up your possibilities on the guitar.
Wow i love his playing i could listen to him pick all day
Perfect! So nice of you to share your talent. Love. Thank you.
When Tommy Emmanuel explains, just listen to him....I swear.🙏
I think he is the greatest player living today
So friggin musical.
Great player, great teacher, great personality. :)
I first watched this about 5 years ago and I still can’t play this😂😂😂 it’s 2024 now.
He is great Thank you for us nominal players who just love playing but do not know how to approach it. gracious
True Blue legend right there. Thank you for this video. Tommy is the man!!
What a talent. I'm amazed every time I hear him play.
Good Morning Master😃Its fun to watch you play, sorry cannot learn without Tabs! Lovely tunes, Waltzing Matilda being my favorite! Thank you so much!😃

yes he told me 8 hrs a day 7 days a week ,,,thats the secrete
Thanks for this Tommy! My thumb is starting to work
Love your style Tommy
That circle of fifths instead of a chromatic run is awesome.
Tommy is at a level that i will never reach
never say never, his level is reachable, it just need whole life of practice/playing
Guitarist number 1
More than a guitar picker...hes a one man band....
Mr entertainment...entertainer extraordinare
Love how the amp and cab has tape over the name. Tommy is a genius.
You are an amazing guy Tommy!
Now I want the acoustic guitar. 😀

The Man The Myth The Legend!!!
Elizabeth Cotton not only played and sang it in C Major, she wrote it in that key.
One hell of a player!! SWINE!! ha ha! x
Cool lesson! I wonder if there is some tab for the difficult part of the song?
Why did this have to end?
Guess what? There's four more episodes coming!
So you could start playing the material....good luck, happy xmas
@Edward M you can if u google it...
And in the mags they advertise the info
Thank you!

Gracias maestro por compartir tu sabiduría.

And I'm really sorry for my poor english.
The chord he used to play first is different from the chord he used when he played it second time
what's the song played behind the first title of the movie?
Where is episode one. I'd like to learn from the beginning.
@GuitarWorld Where to purchase tab?🙏
What can i do to learn all the extra chording to go along with the melody chording?
what TE doesn't say is whether the melody is played with or between the (base ) beat, or if some parts of the melody are and some aren't.
Wow
"Freight Train" by Elizabeth Cotten
Awesome 😍 #AcousticDev
I paid 11 bucks to get this tab....but i would have paid 1100 . Thank you guitar world magazine
Where did ya find the tab?🙏
Where to find number 1?
He goes off the deep end at 4 minutes 20 seconds. Lol.
Wow what a great series

Maybe. But Tommy on a bad day is better than most.
This would be easy if he just broke it down like in the first vid
Just one doubt, why isn't he using a classical guitar? Or is this another style?
Different style, plus it sounds good on the steel strings
