- In episode 1 of The Tommy Emmanuel Guitar Method, Tommy teaches how to get started with fingerstyle guitar. Learn how to build the fundamentals by playing a bass line and melody simultaneously.
This 9min vid should keep me busy for a month or 6.
Hahahahaha, exactly!!
@ピーター yeah it took me 4 days
Figure 1 and 2 for me for the foreseeable
Depends on how long u been playing..
Where are you 3 years later ? Did you learnt it ?
Started this 6 months ago and now 6 months on I've learned 5 of his songs, fuel, halfway home, song for a rainy morning, lewis and clarke and another one I cant remember. Stick with the system and enjoy it.
Thanks for the feedback. That encourages beginning players like me. It's a huge thing to know it's possible even if we get disappointed during the first time(s).
I started with The Man With The Green Thumb then went on to Christmas Memories/Wheels. I've never had as fun playing and I played the Blues hard for 35 years. Starting over on the guitar was fun. Anyone who's made the leap will agree you're starting over lol
Thank you Guitar World for those inspiring series. How cool is that!
Genius in its simplicity. Thank you!!!!
Bit late to the party, but, thank a million for this series, absolute legend on the guitar sharing his knowledge for free! What a time to be alive.
Have a well deserved sub.
Thanks again.
I played the Blues so hard for 35 years that I literally didn't listen or play to anything else, so to speak, so I'm about as late to the party as you can get lol. Learning this stuff was like starting over. Being humbled is not for everyone, but I absolutely loved busting my ass for weeks, at times doubting if I could actually teach these old hands some new tricks. Of course, as always, if you stick with anything you'll get it, but this stuff was 100% the most challenging then rewarding stuff I have ever learned. God bless this man!!!
I've watched maybe 10 videos where Tommy gives this exact same lesson almost word for word, spanning 20+ years. This is the first one he actually slows down "step 4 - arpeggios". Thank for that. I've tried to slow down the other videos and still didn't quite get it. Finally!
Yes but what finger is he picking the 1st string with... 2 or 3?
Looks like ring finger. That’s what I’m using and it feels right
Yep, this was the one missing piece. Thank God I found this video it was driving me crazy. It seems like every single Travis picking video does it slightly differently and my OCD demanded I do it Tommy’s way
Brillent I bought my first Guitarworld mag in the late eighties never saw this coming were I could actually sit down and have Tommy himself tell me what to do in the shed! Words cannot describe
Been waiting for this series. It was one the best you guys have ever done.
Learned this (maybe the hard way) some years ago. Thumb independence is everything. After you have that, it's more than much easier, it's almost effortless, to play melody over the top. I'm so happy to see Tommy teaching this! Let's see if he really mixes it up later with open tunings!
fly 13 thanks for the encouragement! I can do the alternate thumb strokes but when I try to add any fingers, I mess up every time
Glad to see this series. I’ve been playing guitar for over 25 years and just found out about him after watching American Dad a few months ago. The episode where he did the guitar for classical gas. I was like how did I never hear of him before? Been watching his videos for a few months now. Phenomenal guitar player.
I wonder if there are any accurate tabs of some of his performances, such as classical gas?
There are Truefire lessons with Tommy.
truefire.com/educators/tommy-emmanuel/e3861
Song Classical Gas is on Certified Gems, Vol. 1 course.
Yes, they have tabs, pdf... But how accurate those tabs are, do not know. Because every time I wanna learn some of his songs with the help of tabs, always something missing. So I always watch how he plays and try figure it out direct from source :) Because like that I train my ear and I get it much more accurately than tabs.
How can you play for 25 years and not hear of tommy emmanuel??
@@t-rexkalita1379 I asked myself the same question. He wasn’t featured that I remember in the old guitar magazines, so I never heard about him then. But, I don’t think he is as well known as rock players.
I'm an Aussie & it's the opposite for most of us. Almost everyone has heard of Tommy & most have seen him on TV either playing or as a guest of some sort. I've even seen him play live (many years ago) but it wasn't until UA-cam came along that I came to realize he's known the world over!
And quite rightly so...
Wow...a lesson from Tommy.....are you kidding me!......THANK YOU!!!
Great finger picking lesson. Looking forward to more from tommy
Thank you very much Sir!! It was a great lesson for a beginner like me...
This guy is more knowledgeable than most elite guitarists when it comes to the basics
I've been aprox 6 month to achieve step 1, the thumb! Now it is a bit vertigo to start using the other fingers...I guess I'll do it in 2 or 3 months...thank Tommy ❤️
"This is going to be a bit of a mindf...game for you"
"Do as i say or F off" Good one!
He is the greatest on the planet.
No one can touch him
Thank you Guitar World. Thank you Tommy. ♥
Step 3. First, play the 1, 2, 3, 4 using the thumb only. Then, play 1, 2, 3, 4 again and add the strum on the first beat. No problem till this point. Finally, spell out 1 (strum), 2 & 3, 4 and add the accent on the 'and'. The accent is on the AND, between the second the third beat. THAT is the trick.
Thank you for sharing that. When I first read it I was confused, but when running the cadence in my head I realised that between 2 and that "and" was the magic word. Been racking my brain. Thanks
Llevo años siguiendo tu trabajo, admiro mucho tu talento y virtud musical, gracias por compartir tu sabiduría.
Step 1 and 2 i have no problem, what a game changer step 3 is
Tommy sensacional 👏👏👏 fantastic 👋👋. Sou fã 👏 curto demais esse timbre incrível. Esse violão magnífico. Parabéns 👏
Perfect! Love it. Thank you!
I wish with all my heart and soul that Mr. Emmanuel could spend some time to teach me one on one! I truly hope I can learn to fingerpick. My brain plays tricks on me.
I used to think I was quite good until I discovered Tommy. Legendary player and also teacher it would seem. Thanks
He is a freak, not many people have this talent
6:15 You know "game" was not the word that initially popped into his head. 😃
You are right. "Mental conundrum" is the word he mentions in other videos.
Keep up the practice Tom you'll soon be able to play at weddings and the local bowls club.
Will take a few months for learning 1st episode!
yeah, this will keep me busy for a few years.
Do what I say or _ _ _ _ _ _ _ lmao... that was amazing.
Step one friends learn how to Chica boom chick with your thumd and mute strings ✅ step2 keep thumd straight to strings and thumb apart from fingers and get a good grove use pinkie finger ✅3pick strum and chick a boom ✅step 4 put it all together and play away friends ❤️
Tommy Emmanuel... awesome player and ultra cool dude. Saw his PBS special concert. Would love to be able to play like that. Glad to see this. Been playing many years professionally and never stop learning and growing. This is where the fun starts!👍
I'm going to see him in St Catharines on May 22 2024. 100%, without doubt I've NEVER been as excited to see ANYONE, EVER!!
Legend 🙏
'Do what I say, or F*** off'
Oh yeah his Aussie. :P
Nathan Gabriel ...and he is fucking Tommy Emmanuel, goddamn it 😅
Thank you..let me now go through it..
1:19 Spongebob :D
I will need another 50 years please. . . .
😢
I find it difficult to anchor the pinky as I have a short little finger which cramps my picking. So sorry Tommy I'll have to miss that. Is anyone else the same?
yess
Superb
Thanks GW
magic comes after that
This is great. However , for a complete beginner. How does one go about it? I mean , do ya use , like, a Mel Bay Guitar book? A teacher? Teach yourself? Or in other words: How can I even get up to the level to begin learning this Fingerpicking? Can anyone help with these questions ?
What is the song played at the beginning of the video?
😀❤️👌
4:30 nearly spat on the guitar while playing
I have tried the finger picking like Tommy twice. I am having difficulty keeping the thumb pick from sliding around on my thumb. No matter how hard I squeeze the pick on my thumb.
Any pointers on keeping the thumb pick from turning when picking?
Should I practice a softer picking stroke!? Maybe I'm picking with to much force?
I actually anchor down Tommy and I cant play anyother way now. Its so easy
Thnkzz guitar world
Why does it say figure 3 or figure 4.. are there tabs to go with this?
Anyone know the song in the intro
So when he is doing the thumb work and he says spelling out the chord is he doing Root, 3rd and 5th and 7th in rotation? Like C Chord would be C-E-G-B?
Living metronome...
Yes Sir...
Iam Paul from Indonesia.
I really wanted you to watch one man guitar fingerstyle from Indonesia named on his channel in Youtobe called ALIP BA TA and really wanted you "SIR" to give your opinion about him.
Big thanks.
Peace by ALIPERS (fans communities) from Indonesia.
How do you play the D chords with only the thumb?
I still cant get me thumb to move independently I been trying for like 3 months
I'm wondering if it is absolutely necessary to use a thumb pick.
Eddie T I’m coming from the Classical Guitar world. You use your thumb nail only. That’s how I approach fingerstyle playing on steel string acoustic and electric.
Eddie T watch his classical gas video. You will notice that he has very fast melodic sequences that he alternate picks. He calls it flat picking. You wouldn’t be able to do this without a pick, both in speed and tone.
If you grow out your thumb nail it has a similar effect, however as Jeff mentioned, when you need to alternate pick it’s a lot easier to do with a thumb pick. There are a few techniques you can use to get around this like using your index finger to play the same string your thumb played in place of the alternate upstroke. However the tone you produce from striking a string with your index finger will be different then with your thumb.
You can hybrid pick too. Use a flat pick and use your middle and ring finger. Tommy does it that way a lot also.
greg Koch can do a lot of this stuff with fingers and flatpick..and executes well.....but...if you want to REALLY sound like tommy, than yes...I think so....
what's the song played behind the first title of the movie?
Any tabs for his exercises?
It's all great but what exact chords are played with the finger strumming, a beginner learning how to?
Hey , what's your progress in two years?....just wanted to know as your comment is 2 years old..😁
Could you please let us know the chords you are using. Thank you
Hey Tommy, are you using your 3rd finger to pick the 1st string in the 4th Arpeggio section or are you using the second finger again? I know in theory you would use your 3rd finger but it kinda looks like you use your second finger which makes this so much easier. It is so hard to tell as I can't see your 3rd finger move as it is always hidden behind the other fingers. I would love the tabs.
Idk if you when you say “4th arpeggio section” you mean figure 4 cause he only does arpeggios on figure 5. But in figure 4 where the accents are only on beat 1 and the 2& he uses 3rd finger = 1st string
2nd finger = 2nd string
1st finger = 3rd string
In figure 5 where he spreads out the chord and plays arpeggios he keeps his fingers on the same string, only the thumb changes strings
theres no way I can mute the top 3 strings and letting the other 3 ring out,. I have to rock my hand back too far onto the low strings and cant reach my pinky to anchor. My hands small, so in doing so doesnt give my fingers room to pluck the strings anyhow..... hmmmm
At 6:16 .."a bit of a mind game.." Yes! and I have another word that fits! Damn, adding that accent is DIFFICULT! Is it on the second beat or just behind it? Any suggestions would be appreciated here as I am stuck on step 3!
Check out the Marshall Jubilee, since they had to cover the name, lmao!
How will I play the traditional D major? I mean after 4th string which string should I pluck with my thumb? I can't understand how can I play my thumb with a traditional dmajor shape on. Someone help me out please
Use the shape you would normally use for c major at the root position, but using your index, middle and pinkie, then bar your pointer finger across
step 3
Was this in a particular issue?
I AM NOW INDEPENDENTLY, THUMB INDEPENDENTLY
O cant do bar chords. Im limited now as to what i can play for now.
You're not going to be able to play the guitar if you can't do bar chords. Work on that before you do anything else
You can play guitar without knowing bar chords. It’s going to limit what you can play but you can do a lot without them. You can try putting your thumb over like Tommy does for the F chords and just slide that up
@@mjs2016 thanks I was told I can get away with that with my capo. I tried but I found easier b and f chords. works great. I can play
In before anchoring flame war
Rebellious digits 😂😂😂
Any tips on on fretting using the thumb? I can't get it to sound clean without seriously tensing my hand up
Not everyone can do this. You may have to use a regular bar like me
Easy, practice and more practice
How about hybrid picking?
Tommy use hybrid picking also some of his song, because he started fingerstyle using flat pick and change to thumvpick after he discovered thumbpick because it a lot a easier for beginner
By the time episode 387 rolls around, I may actually be able to play "Mary had a little lamb."
I'm not sure whether you're estimating your abilities to be that poor, or are second guessing the pace set by a guy who's not only an absolute master, but also has many years of experience successfully teaching new players. Either way, I think the solution is to practice more instead of complaining about it on youtube.
BlueCollarWallets then my recommendation would be more practice (why do I feel like I said this already?).
Because no one pays attention to you.
BlueCollarWallets well that's a bit self-contradictory.
guys any advice for the third step i'm having problem with the accenting
Sammy 110 honestly just keep trying, it takes quite a while. I’m almost there and I’ve probably practiced it for about 6 hours by now
@@tomcollier3828 thanks man i got it down at a slow tempo just gotta keep practicing
What is the music at the beginning of this video?
9 pound hammer
stuck at step 3 and 4 the accent and the finger picking part T_T my brain and my hands
Anyone know the name of that little rod on on the headstock and what it's for?
that's a capo it's for capoing
Not at the end of the headstock, it's under the strings near the nut
@@amannotnamedsteve9363 the white thing at the end of the headstock is a tuner
It’s a capo not being used
Can you get Jimmy Page on this??!
can u teach normal strum to play the accutic guitar ??
You can learn this from anyone on youtube. Tommy emmanuel is perfect for learning this particular fingerpicking skill
And so forth..... HA!
What does he say when he finishes playing, like at 7:34? Can't understand it
Luca Annoni “and so forth” 😉🎶
Damn!
Does anyone have any tips for doing step 3?
Shuaib Shafi I feel the lower strings are hit at count 3..
Was trying to work it out also, it looks like accent 2 on beat 3 if that makes sense, I found that doing it very slowly then working up the speed was the way to go.
This works for me. Play the bass thumb part and sing the arpeggio part. When you feel ready then swap parts. Play the finger part and sing the bass part. This gets the rhythm in your brain as well as your fingers. Hopefully you'll find it easier to put the two parts together when you feel ready to try both parts on guitar. This method also works very well when learning left and right hand parts on piano. Good luck.
anyone have the tab for figure 3 and 4, haha.
will de deeply appreciated
No kidding! What beat is that 'accent' on?
For figure 4 what damn chords is he playing? I wish he would tell us. It’s hard to tell what he’s fretting, he modifies a lot with his thumb.
C, F, G
need tabs sir
Wow I didn't know Magneto played the guitar
Great video!
But that severe noise-gate is giving me vertigo!
GREAT LESSONS!!! GOOD CAMERA VIEW, BUT, IT'D BE NICE TO SEE THE FRET BOARD FROM TOMMY'S PERSPECTIVE, (FROM ABOVE).
anyone know what songs we could use to practice each step he shows?
Try a song called Freight Train..that's usually the one Tommy recommends in all the beginner Travis picking vids I've seen of him.
Thanks! I looked it up and found the reverb vid. Already started practicing it. Haha
Funtokill414 awesome! Have fun!
+Funtokill414 try dont think twice its allright by Dylan, Guarenteed by Vedder or Dear Prudence by The Beatles. Different songs, same technique
And stay tuned for episode two! He goes through Freight Train and a few other techniques.
Cool lesson but Reverb posted the exact same thing a few weeks ago ! Seems like UA-cam is running a loop, it's groundhog's day feeling. Very hard for me to discover new things now. I feel like everything has been said and taught about the guitar on youtube. Most popular guitar teachers on youtube have difficulties creating new and original stuff ... Not saying that I can play anything, far from it, but I feel bored now when I'm surfing UA-cam. I'm not even ending videos because I feel I've seen it already a thousand times. Guys, is it just me ? Is it the beginning of the end ?
4:31 f off! Lol
Alright step 3 is getting really complicated
Appreciate Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I am interested in your initial thoughts. Have you thought about - Rozardner Stopping Sounds Reality (do a search on google)? It is an awesome one off product for transforming you into A guitar legend without the hard work. Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend Sam at very last got great results with it.
"We call this boom chick boom chick" - Tommy Emmanuel on fingerstyle guitar. 2018
Don't have a thumb Tommy, yea. It sucks...
Do what i say or____ ___ haha
Too much bass on the vocal Mic
Sorry I found this quite confusing. Better if you had tab in the vid. I've only been playing 12months so yea not easy to follow along soz.
Trust me learn by ear and eye watching others play you dont want to learn by tab
I agree that to be a very good guitar player you should learn by sound and sight and not tab.
