yes, this is how you tell an amazing story with incredible characters. those subtle details mean everything. sometimes they arent always noticed, but you still feel them. and then when someone observant points them out, that realization from everyone else when it is shared makes it all the more sweeter. god what a great game.

What always sends me over the top is the bit in the credits sequence with Ardbert. His axe isn't covered in blood anymore and he's coming back to his friends.
It's like he's been relieved of his guilt 😭

That "we fight as one" bit always gets me. Ardbert has thought all this time that he was just left as he was to suffer and its not until this moment that he realizes that he wasn't left behind as punishment but to join with WoL to save The First and The Source. It's so damn beautiful. And the theme was a spoiler all along...One brings Shadow, one brings the light. Ah! SO GOOD!
Emet Selch is the perfect villain, you have to ask yourself if you did the right choice. And this is, why Shadowbringer is so good.
Exactly. The best villians are always those that, in some part of your mind, you wonder if they were right.
And on top of that his personality is just grating enough to make you hate him. Best villian ever.
He was a genocidal maniac! The most dangerous enemies are the enigmatic ones.
@@seldumonde the best villain doesn't necessarily needs be one that makes you wonder if they are right, they could be just a crazy that wants to become god, but a villain with a good motivation definitely hits harder when done right... the problem is actually doing it right. shadowbringers was so good because you can understand Emet-selch motivation, and its easy to believe he is right, but at the same time letting he succeed means sacrificing everything you care for. so neither side is wrong, they just want different things. if the rest of the game didn't try so hard to make the Ancians as cartoonish vilains as possible, they would have been so much better.
@@danilooliveira6580 dunno about that. I think that because they made the cartoon villains at the start that it made such a bigger impact here. When we first met them, we just thought that they were the "bad guys". 1 dimensional characters with nothing else but to be bad. It's only when we actually get to this that we see that they are a lot more. They have have a goal that isn't bad. It's a simple wish a lot of people have, to have their home. And it's because we never looked at them until this patch that we see they really are more than just twirling mustache villains. It's great growth in a story and character to see it expanded like this and makes you look and think about it too. Maybe all those villains we write off as just bad guys, might be lot more. Their story just well hidden or unexplained.

I love how as the axe dissipates you can see in your eyes that you know Ardbert is gone, sacrificed his reincarnation cycle to rejoin with you and save Norvrandt. He was a true hero.

@@omensoffate exactly, he literally pops out to talk to seto. He's joined the WOLs soul where the WOL is the dominant psyche. Like seto says ardbert will still see many an adventure.
@@Dewkeeper Yes but as a fraction of Azem, Ardbert's aether would have gone back into the Lifestream and a new child would be born with his aether, effectively reincarnating him (obviously with a new body and personality ignorant of who he is) but now he's just part of the WoL. In a way he DID give up his reincarnation to save you and Norvrandt.

"Remember us". Century and century of work, scheme and all others things to bring back, atleast tryin', his friends and people to life. Even after all he have done, he's not cursing you nor insulting or what. He just ask to be remembered, He and oll of the Ascians. Thoses two words hit me really hard, probably even more than any other event we play in the MSQ, damn.
Not century, THOUSAND of years of work, sadness and hope to restaure the world has what it was before. Year after i still fell sad for Emet, but i will remember his, remember that he once live

Fun Fact! In this game, "Eternal Wind", is G'raha's official theme. Which explains why it plays almost every time he's on screen :D

This is similar to Cyan's theme from FF6 being repurposed as Hien's theme. It even shows up in the second phase of the tsukuyomi fight. I love how this game treats the classic FF music.

Emet-Selch is EASILY the best final fantasy antagonist. hell, I'll even dare to say that he is the best antagonist from J-RPGs in general.
you are not lying. I think Emet-Selch is 1000 times better then Sephiroth, kefka or any other RPG villain that I can think of because you truly understand the intent behind his "evil" actions and if you were in his shoes you would clearly want the same thing and come to the same realization...such an AMAZING character and story! Such an amazing example of how "good" and "evil" in our world are very rarely so clearly cut and dry. Look how a simple bit of added knowledge or a small shift in the perception of history will totally change how one sees Good vs Evil.
In truth the "Good" ones in history are often simply the ones who wins the wars and slander the other as "Evil"

@@chrisd8006 For me, what consolidated Emet as the best antagonist is that while he was about to be defeated, he did not scream the usual phrases of a villain on the verge of death (it's not possible, worms and the like) that would have irreparably ruined him. , but his thoughts are always directed towards the burden he has, the only hope for his kind.
In my opinion, Emet-Selch is one of the most well-written characters/villains I've seen, because we GET him. We totally understand why he does everything he does. His motives, his intentions, his love, and his dispair. Even though we only knew him within Shadowbringers, I feel like we've known him for so much longer. He left such a lasting impression. At the end, I really wish we didn't have to kill him. I wish there was some other alternative ending, but it had to be done. I really want to know how Square Enix will be able to one-up themselves after this.
I agree. I wish he could have stayed, although I knew that things would probably end in a battle to the death, as adamant as he was about Rejoining. I wonder at what point in the final fight he realized who we were a shard of, going from “Die pathetic shade!” to “It’s you, of course it’s you...old friend.” The writers really worked magic in making Emet a villain that still feels like an old friend, even while he opposes you.
Emet: “Remember us.”
My WOL: “I will. Goodbye, my brother. Your old friend will handle things from here.”
I still can barely recover from that triple plot twist.

5.3 boss: ~exists~
Notice with every time we see Emet he always walked like he had a hunch like he was carrying the burden of his entire people.
In the end when we defeat him he was standing upright like we lifted all that burden off him & he was finally relieved of his duty.
So, I played World of Warcraft since The Burning Crusade and left in Battle for Azeroth for FF14 as my MMO of choice 100% (hiatus in WoD and Legion for FF14). Nothing and I mean nothing, in a decade of World of Warcraft comes close to this game when it comes to direction, cinematography, canon, writing comes close. The closest I can even think of - and it's a stretch - is the Battle of Angrathar the Wrathgate in WOTLK. But that PALES in comparison.
I don't think WoW have as many lines that could tug your heartstrings as FFXIV. Those in FFXIV still kick up a tsunami of emotions to this day, yet a smile better suit a hero...

One of the best stories in any game ever, let alone an MMO. The way this expansion includes ongoing story and gameplay elements, masterfully done. Writing, acting, music, the way the writing weaves into the gameplay. Beautiful

I wonder how much of the irony of that statement was intentional by the writers.
Right? I was practically screaming throughout that whole exchange watching this, like "THAT'S YOU!!! YOU'RE DOING THIS!!"
probably very intentional. but you need to see his point of view. the ancians decision to save the world was what created them, for Emet-selch they are incomplete beings that are stopping him from bringing the world back together to its correct state, because they think their incomplete and broken lives are worth more than Emet-selch's loved ones.

@@nerdychocobo I think this is actually a point of misconception for a lot of people that I'd like to mention. Although wholly ironic and understandable there is a commonly missed point he makes: we are the shattered souls, just as the shattered star. Thus the people he cares about and is trying to save IS us. "Would half your number give their lives to save the other half?" We and every person, every elemental, every shard, are all tiny pieces of the original selves that ARE that other half.
So when we actively work against their wishes, it is similar to a drowning person pushing away the lifeguard. And Emet (among others) have dealt with some variation of us over the eons doing the same things, saying the same things, and asserting the same ideas while they watch just flounder either in weak echoes of what power we used to have or in full entropy doing 'normal life' things. The point of contention was never the end result of the Rejoinings, the issue has been how the reconstruction was happening.
Without spoilers, this is made more so apparent when we learn of what exactly brought about Hydaelyn and why it was meant to check Zodiark.
@@danilooliveira6580 and I think that’s the part that’s the most sad. In another version of this world Emet and the other surviving Ancients could have chosen to see the peoples of the star as their children, their legacy. Instead of measuring our worth, they could have become our eternal teachers.
they could have lived up to their role as stewards to the star. They chose instead to lose that purpose by losing themselves in the past.

Final Days of Amaurot was such an incredible dungeon and Mortal Instants (the music track for the dungeon) makes me FEEL FEELINGS. Shadowbringers is such an incredible experience!

oh boy, 5.3 video is going to be interesting... im not too emotional, but uh... it hit me HARD, mainly because of characters involved... as a long time fan of the franchise, it was amazing.
I would go so far as to say that 5.3 made FFXIV "THE" best FF game ever, and I am a huge FF7 fan

Fun fact: Emet-Selch has another name in Eorzea, Nald'Thal. Yes. That Nald-Thal, the Patron god of Ul'Dah. A twinned god of Riches and Death, much like the Roman Pluto, known among the Greeks as HADES.
I'm honestly not the type of guy who cry in front of a series, film or games but this... ff14 was my first mmo and I'm so glad to have given this game a shot. And yep, we must protect our boy. He is PRECIOUS.
Emet-Selch was such a great villain. Much more interesting than the typical ax-crazy psychopath.

Thancred tap dancing on Emet's arm is the greatest thing I've ever seen
Experiencing Shadowbringers with the extra kick of having Eternal Wind be one of your favourite music must feel so good.
The expansion was so epic. One of the best RPGs I've ever played.. online or offline. I cried through so much of it out of excitement or loss equally.
There are bunch of subtle fun notes in this finale.
Remember how every main boss and trial you've done so far always came with a name and title? "Lightwarden: Titania" "Cthonic Riddle: Therion"... And then Hades is just "Hades".
But he DID say to do away with titles and pretense...
I assume you noticed Urianger in the end? He's floating face-down in the water in the most lower-left corner of the screen (unfortunately right behind your video inset).
And Ardberts Bravura is finally no longer bloodstained...
You said you kindof liked Emet, and that's the point. He dared to try and like us, too. He dared to put faith in us... after a thousand thousand years of letdowns. And that's why he got so angry when he got disappointed yet again...

There's something magical about experiencing this a second time, living and crying it through with another person as they experience it. Final Fantasy has been my home away from home all throughout my life, and has so much of my heart. It's wonderful to see other people so invested in, and cherishing, it as I do!

Watching this as I'm waiting for the 5.4 patch and it's reminding me of my own feelings when I beat ShB. I was able to hold back my tears with effort until Feo Ul showed up then I broke. Amazing ending.

I got into FFXIV shortly before Shadowbringers came out, and I played through it on release then took a break for almost a year, shortly before finding your channel I got back into FFXIV and so seeing your reaction videos I was excited to see another player experience the absolute masterpiece that I believe Shadowbringers is. Your videos are wonderful, your reactions are so pure and it's the closest I'll get to reliving the experience for the first time, so thank you for that!

Aslo have to add: your reaction to the music in all of these makes me happy. Soken is a god, and the Amaurot/Tempest leitmotif is one of the best, and by far my favorite.

Something I noticed when G'raha does the Summoning. There are 7 lights right?
My FC leader told me it was because it was an 8-man trial. I think there's another reason: There were 14 shards of the original world right? (including the Source) There are 6 known calamities as revealed earlier in SHB. Additionally, the thirteenth shard was confirmed to become The Void at the hands of the Ascians for not knowing what they were doing to cause a rejoining.
14-6-1=7. 7 Lights. 7 Shards. While those are other players, they're supposed to be the WoL from the other 7 shards being summoned to help you take down Hades.
At least that's my theory.
I liked, how you visibly went from "I've come here to stop you." to "Am I really the good guy here?". Emet is an amazing character, loved him the minute he was introduced, because he reminded me of Ardyn from FFXV.

I know the overarching story isn’t over yet but shadowbringers will always hold a special place in my heart, never have I cared more about a video game story and shed tears over and over again alongside people I watch experience it for the first time. It really has been a highlight in gaming for me and even outside of gaming I am ever so happy to have heard this story and will one day see it to it’s conclusion alongside everyone else and I trust that it will be a conclusion worth experiencing and remembering
As amazing as this is, one thing always bugged me about the line
"Let us imagine that the laws of reality are again undone, and the world faces true annihilation. Do you honestly believe that half your number would sacrifice themselves to save the other?"
Because that... kind of happened. Innumerable people in the Exarch's future dedicated their lives to creating the means to send the Tower to the First, despite the fact that doing so would make them never exist in the first place. They sacrificed more than their lives, they sacrificed their very existence, just to have a shot of setting things right, of saving the world.
Of course, Emet doesn't know that, but I wanted the ability to tell him, to reveal this proof that these sundered souls carry the same capacity for sacrifice as the Ancients. But the writers don't seem to have noticed.

That means that the only real options he REALLY wants to consider is the one that will bring the Rejoining.
If we would be able to point this out he would likely reprimand us to note that these are then the people of the future. A future AFTER the next Rejoining. Where maybe, MAYBE the people of the Source have actually grown worthy of inheriting it. But that is not now, and that is not you. So what you're saying is then that the Calamity will make them all 'better' people for having made the sacrifice. And that will be the mental gymnastics that will allow him to ignore our valid points.
@@TarossBlackburn while he is tempered its also clear that tempering for zodiark works differently to lesser primals. The tempered invariably grow to be idiots from the experience as their compulsion to serve their God supercedes everything else they care about. Emet was evidently in fairly full control of his faculties and earnestly considered changing course should these mortals somehow persuade him otherwise. It's implied that the ascians were tempered only so far as that they would not budge on bringing zodiark back, but their opinions on the details of how to get there and on the underlying validity of the project were fundamentally their own.
Zodiark was designed by the amaurotines after all and they knowingly and voluntarily became tempered. I imagine it was along the lines of "compulsion to protect the star" where Zodiark was the manmade will of that star. Perhaps it was a way to also keep their creation magics from damaging their home as their will was already superceded on that issue by this planetary will.
That timeline still exists actually. It was in one of the Tales from Darkness short stories. After they sent off G'raha, the timeline continued but then Midgardsormr woke up and was like "Damn shit went down while I was asleep after all that Omega bullshit" but in honour of everything you did and how everyone came together to save you, he helps the people start to properly rebuild

Final Fantasy 12 was mine. Then I got Revenant Wings,Final Fantasy 3 and 4 for the DS. Then I played 7 and 8. Purchased 1 and 2 on my phone. Got Final fantasy 13 on my 17th birth day. Played 13-2. Went back to 5 and 6. And 3 years ago I started to play Final Fantasy 14.
