5.3!!! elidibus!!! exarch!!!! AHHHHGGGGHHH. this is my favorite patch to date. the writing, the music, the trial...everything was just perfect to me. so many quotes from this patch that I think of and get teary eyed at :') thank you all for watching! excited to share my endwalker reactions with you :)
The first six seconds sums this patch up pretty well, "It just doesn't stop. I'm so stressed out." Taken as a vertical slice of the game, 5.3 is good. Taking ALL the set up into context, it was the masterful culmination of a LOT of planning.
I love watching peoples reaction to this section of the story. It is so well written and the voice actors nailed it. When you said "I'm sorry guys, I just can't get through this without crying" I thought to myself, well ya, I'd be worried if you did get through that emotional gut punch of a story without crying. Looking forward to seeing your reactions to Endwalker.

Seat of Sacrifice was the first time I saw a tank LB3 in a fight. The sight of the Paladin's wall coming up just in time for him to crash in with the LB4 is seared into my memory as one of the best moments I've experienced in an MMO fight.
@AgentRedShirt I didn't do Alexander (or most of the raids, period) until after 5.3. A lot of the reason why I started doing the side content afterward was because 5.3 was the patch that REQUIRED you to do Crystal Tower raids before you could access Shadowbringers content. I hadn'tdone them before 5.3 released, so during the scene where the Exarch is revealed to be G'raha, my two response options were: Say Nothing, and: "Who are you?"
@@omegagilgamesh some of the stuff that was completely optional at the time I feel should’ve maybe been mandatory as part of the story. Like the coils for instance. But my knowledge I think there was only three or four times maybe in the entire game where tank LB3 was necessary. It was pretty hilarious because when I did see the sacrifice, the tanks didn’t even have LB on their bar because they never used it before. Kind of a shame honestly that there aren’t more instances where a tank LB is required. Give them something more to do than position the boss and keep the heat.
Jumping down some stairs head first could do the trick. That, or an early end. Might be worth the risk to experience peak again for the first time. I am not sure. lmao.
My mom died in 2017 and I went through this patch when it came out a few years later. I was a sobbing snotty mess so bad that I couldn't pay attention to anything after it and had to go to youtube to see the full scene later. Watching this made me cry again. I can't even think of that line without crying.

5.0 to 5.3 is just a storytelling masterpiece. So many agonizing little details come together to form such a great narrative. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!
I still say its a crime that last lena and exarch cutscene was voiced. Its the last time they get to tall to each other and they don't get to voice act those lines as if the VAs wouldnt both crush it. Ah, it hurts
It was not Emet appearing during the trial, saving us from the empty pocket dimension. It was not Elidibus, reminiscing on his past before dissappearing. It was f**king Seto that got me to bawl my eyes out. And I didn't even own a pet yet at the time. Now I do and it only hits harder.
I've watched most of your journey and ngl, you are a tough cookie haha. I was surprised when SHB started getting to you. I was like, damn she gonna tough this one out too but alas, got got. Fun journey! xD

Hint about the Action Button: Maneuver. In any of those instances we don't need to spam mouse, just spam ANY button in keyboard or controller, works like a charm and LESS painful.
Shadowbringers, this story, 5.3 especially... after doing this bit myself I was legit physically sick for a couple days lmao. It just gutted me that much. I couldn't stop crying for Elidibus, for Lyna, for Seto, for G'raha in all he has done a sacrificed as though it were a given, the easiest thing in the world. I- I could speak for ages on all the moments and feelings afforded to me. Just damn.
The funny part about the Seto and Ardbert scene is that Ardbert no longer exists, per say. He is one with the WoL, meaning the WoL has all his memories and is one more complete ancient soul.
Not sure if you meant "one more" complete or one "more complete", but for clarification for any future readers, it's the later.. The WoL soul was split into 14 shards during the Sundering, along with everyone else but 3 people, the Unsundered. There have been 7 rejoinings. 7 shards merged with source + source soul means everyone is currently at 8/14 of their original soul. When Ardbert merges with the WoL, they become 9/14 of their original soul. With the 13th in its current state, it appears that soul is "lost". So theoretically with available information to the players, its unclear if we will ever be a full complete Ascian soul again.
im still blown away by what this story managed to accomplish with elidibus. having seen the full msq, elidibus was who i cried the hardest for, and its so wild that they brought me there over the course of 2-3 patches when up until then he was such a blank canvas
I gotta say, as someone who has not played FFXIV and knows nothing of the story, this popped up in my feed and knowing I enjoy your content I decided to click to have something playing in the background while i did some other work. Needless to say I have not gotten any work done this last hour and am very intrigued and entertained in this story.
5.3!!! Whether you think of it as romantic or not, it's ridiculous how easy it is to get attached to G'raha/The Exarch. Not only that but to put us in the shoes of both Emet and Elidibus after all the wrongs they've committed...Truly the writers outdid themselves in this patch.
The no hugging was a model limitation. I remember at the time of Shadowbringerd being pissed Thancred didn't hug Ryne when she started crying when saying goodbye. They seemed to have overcome this limitation in Endwalker and definitely in DawnTrail.
Emet entrusted the fate of the Star to us. And as Hythlodaeus told us, whenever their friend (Azem) called, Emet would come running. So he saved us, for the Star, for his friend, and to give Elidibus peace once and for all. And yes, for me, this is the best patch.
Finally reached the end and I do have to say: Almost everyone ships the WoL with G'raha. I consider him and a certain bun to be my WoL's boyfriends and will not accept detractors.
It's crazy that Soken wrote this music while battling cancer in the hospital and nobody not even his co workers knew it. Gives "to the edge" a complete new meaning >.

Listen: the fact that Moenbryda was able to give Urianger the biggest hug back in ARR, yet Thancred gives Ryne head pats till the very end is upsetting to say the least lol
@@bandi138138 they altered the scene where WoL lifted the staff with Graha to finish Elidibus for Lalas, I imagine they could do the same every now and then for a quick hugging cutscene, show them hugging the shin or whatever 🤣
My headcanon is that Thancred went to type /hug, but predictive text changed it to /headpat, and then being the suave guy he is just rolled with it without missing a beat.
This patch gets everyone. Also during the active time events, you don't have to actually click the button. It's far easier and faster to just spam your movement keys. lol
You can use the keyboard buttons for the QTEs, so long as they don't open menus in battle. I usually use asdf jkl; I think, or was it asdf hjkl I could feel the phase change wipe coming as soon as you main tanked lol This whole expansion still gets me, but nothing as much as Seto. I remember hitting the Several Cutscenes like "what now? I'm already crying" Imagine if you mixed up the memory crystals and put their souls back in the wrong bodies
I guess this is a sign that the recent graphic overhaul was an improvement, because I definitely noticed that everyone looks a little rougher around the edges in these cutscenes. Does this mean that the older MSQ cutscenes don't get the shiny new graphics? Cutscenes like this are basically done in the regular game engine, but I hadn't really considered whether they would get the upgrade or not.
if i recall, the devs will be pushing the graphical updates in batches; older models and stuff [will] get updated, it'll just be further down the line ((since NPCs with unique models probably need updating manually
ShB has absolutely been my favorite expansion. The story was so good, I kinda wish I could forget it and play it again. Looking forward to EW....after I take a break lol
Interesting, I found Zenos one of the weakest characters. His motivation to find the one true challenge seems very bland and generic to me. Maybe there‘s a side to it that I just didn‘t understand.
@MacTaipan , yea I would definitely place Emet and Elidibus at S tier and above Zenos, but the depth of his character is worthy of being S tier when you consider the 4th wall implications. Essentially, Zenos is the only one who knows what we truly are. Almost like a ghost in the machine. Every character in the game is simply subject to their predetermined narratives (script). We're the only ones that are different, because we're only participants of our own will. Zenos, however, feels trapped. Almost as if he recognizes he's just a mere character in a story and incapable of changing anything, until he accidentally awakens due to his encounter with us. That's when he realizes we're the only real thing in his universe. That's why we're his "friend". He knows he only exists if we're playing. If no one played ffxiv, Zenos wouldn't exist.
^ All this is very true And objectively yes I can recognize that the other two are clearly written better overall, they have more thought put into them. But also… Zenos is just cool af and gives me what I search for in just an overall “thrill of battle/challenge” character. The only one to originally whoop and humiliate the WoL and be an actual challenge. I like that side of things personally a lot. Idk if you guys watch anime but to me he’s similar to DBZ broly original ( not exact ofc but just get my jist) Broly isn’t written all that great, people find his motive lame. But he’s a badass and probably the coolest juggernaut of a villain and thus many people love him and rate him at the top. In similar ways I feel the same for Zenos. No character like him to me and while his writing may not have been put thought into like other beloved characters. Not every character needs to be cause he marks the things I look for and like and I guess a lot people feel the same and that’s why he’s rated so highly. But I can understand for those that don’t like him.

No doubt that Soken’s experience battling cancer had a big impression on the music he made for Shadowbringers. Truly some of his best works ever.

This whole expansion still gets me, but nothing as much as Seto. I remember hitting the Several Cutscenes like "what now? I'm already crying"

Wow i found one that the supreme emotion vampire, Jesse Cox has not made it too.
I guess this is a sign that the recent graphic overhaul was an improvement, because I definitely noticed that everyone looks a little rougher around the edges in these cutscenes. Does this mean that the older MSQ cutscenes don't get the shiny new graphics? Cutscenes like this are basically done in the regular game engine, but I hadn't really considered whether they would get the upgrade or not.
if i recall, the devs will be pushing the graphical updates in batches; older models and stuff [will] get updated, it'll just be further down the line ((since NPCs with unique models probably need updating manually
This whole expansion broke me. Literally no video game has ever been able to touch me like Shadowbringers and Endwalker did with FF14.
I didn't cry too much with the shadowbringer msq, but that Seto scene.... 💔
They only needed one patch to make me not caring to absolutely balling over Elidibus
ShB has absolutely been my favorite expansion. The story was so good, I kinda wish I could forget it and play it again. Looking forward to EW....after I take a break lol

Interesting, I found Zenos one of the weakest characters. His motivation to find the one true challenge seems very bland and generic to me. Maybe there‘s a side to it that I just didn‘t understand.
@MacTaipan , yea I would definitely place Emet and Elidibus at S tier and above Zenos, but the depth of his character is worthy of being S tier when you consider the 4th wall implications. Essentially, Zenos is the only one who knows what we truly are. Almost like a ghost in the machine. Every character in the game is simply subject to their predetermined narratives (script). We're the only ones that are different, because we're only participants of our own will. Zenos, however, feels trapped. Almost as if he recognizes he's just a mere character in a story and incapable of changing anything, until he accidentally awakens due to his encounter with us. That's when he realizes we're the only real thing in his universe. That's why we're his "friend". He knows he only exists if we're playing. If no one played ffxiv, Zenos wouldn't exist.

And objectively yes I can recognize that the other two are clearly written better overall, they have more thought put into them.
But also… Zenos is just cool af and gives me what I search for in just an overall “thrill of battle/challenge” character. The only one to originally whoop and humiliate the WoL and be an actual challenge.
I like that side of things personally a lot. Idk if you guys watch anime but to me he’s similar to DBZ broly original ( not exact ofc but just get my jist) Broly isn’t written all that great, people find his motive lame. But he’s a badass and probably the coolest juggernaut of a villain and thus many people love him and rate him at the top. In similar ways I feel the same for Zenos. No character like him to me and while his writing may not have been put thought into like other beloved characters. Not every character needs to be cause he marks the things I look for and like and I guess a lot people feel the same and that’s why he’s rated so highly.
But I can understand for those that don’t like him.
