    Loved the video! I am a huge Tezuka fan and try to collect as much of his work in english as I can, sometimes i try to read some series in scanlations but its not quite as satisfying/with obvious varying quality lol. Its always amazing to me how many there are, its like an endless list. I was very lucky to collect most of Phoenix back when it was first being released in english and was only missing 2 volumes.. which I finally was able to buy this past year or so and I now own the full collection! Its my pride and joy on my shelf. As many others have said, I would agree its the best of his work and the one I keep going back to re-read. (my favorite stories are vol6 nostalgia and sun part 1 and 2 (vol 10 & 11.)) I also am a huge fan of both MW and Ode to Kirihito, but I'm also partly attached to them because they were some of my first exposure to Tezuka's work at all, so I have a little bit of a nostalgic bias for those. :P
    I love to hear that your fav is Ayako ! I feel that one sometimes is often under appreciated so its cool to see it mentioned. I hope you get to read Phoenix someday, it'd be awesome to hear your opinions on it and maybe even rank the volumes for it too! :)

      Awesome that you liked the video! Yeah, it does feel pretty endless but it's also a blessing. I can't imagine how I'd feel if I somehow managed to collect and read all of his manga. I think it'd be a mix of satisfaction but also sadness. Thanks for watching and I loved what you had to say!

    Great video! My personal favorite is Vampires. This sadly hasn’t been translated officially into English, so I read the scans online. It’s the turning point of Rock being a villain. It’s probably the best appearance of him besides maybe Bookilla and Black Jack. I also really like Dororo, Unico and Rainbow Parakeet. I haven’t read a lot of Phoenix but Future is really good. Midnight is also worth a read- it’s similar in the way Black Jack is structured.
    I have a love hate relationship with Tezuka’s dark period works. Works like Alabaster really soured my view of it. However I enjoyed Apollo’s Song, and from what I have read of Ode to Kirihito I liked it too. I’ve been meaning to get my hands on Message to Adolf and Barbara. Message to Adolf was one of Tezuka’s last manga he ever worked on and it really shows how well he can write a story, and make the perfect art to match it.
    Have you heard of the AI generated Tezuka work? It’s really interesting!

    • @Immortallium

      I really wish I could read Vampires. It'd also be cool to see the anime series where they used live-action footage in the transformation sequences.

    I've recently started getting into Tezuka after having read Dororo which was an amazing experience and is one of my favourite plot compared to all the manga I've read. I recently bought MW, can't wait to start it. It's my goal to collect all of his works published in English. Its really helpful for new fans like me that his works are being reprinted again. Tezuka is an amazing storyteller, took a bit to get use to the art at the start but now I love the uniqueness about it.

    Phoenix is absolutely amazing and definitely Tezuka's best work, but collecting it really is a pain. I have volumes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8 and 12. If you only ever seek out one volume of Phoenix, make it volume 4. Since most volumes are self-contained (7 and 8 form one story and 10 and 11 form one story) you can read most of them individually and still get a full story, and Karma is simply exceptional.

    • @Immortallium
      @Immortallium  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah. I do realise that for the most part they're self-contained but I would still like to read them in order someday. Maybe Viz will rerelease them like they're doing with some other series at the moment or maybe someone else will pick up the license. Thanks for the info though. It'll be helpful to know in the future.

      What are your thoughts on the fact that Phoenix hasn´t been finished yet? Tezuka obviously considered Phoenix as his masterpiece, the work of his life. And I assume he probably wanted a conclusion to link all of the stories represented;
      I heard that, while he was on deathbed, he really really wanted to conclude it and suffered quite a lot because it wasn´t possible.

    ayako is absolutely phenomenal, especially bc i appreciated it more bc ive spent a fair amount of time and effort into learning about japanese history. thematically it means a lot more to me with that context. i absolutely agree with u on that one :-)
    i have to say tho that i thought mw was pretty disappointing tbh. i read it after hearing someone say that it was supposedly an influence on naoki urasawa's monster, and i think going into it with such high expectations was to the detriment of my experience. i also feel like it has some of the most frustrating writing of female characters that ive seen in manga. while the concept of gender itself may have been interestingly explored through yuki's character, the way it depicts women otherwise just felt really demeaning. i was actually a little surprised that it beat a few of the others on ur list, but it is an overall solid read. great list!!

    • @Immortallium
      @Immortallium  3 роки тому +3

      Glad you agree with Ayako!
      I've yet to read Monster so I didn't have any greater expectations than simply "it's another Osamu Tezuka manga". I kind of agree with you, while there are plenty of great female characters throughout Osamu Tezuka's works, there are definitely times where I find them quite lacking. As I mentioned, I thought a certain scene early on in Ode to Kirihito was quite poorly handled and much of that frustration came from the way the woman reacted afterwards. Thanks for the compliment!

    I think you're one of the few people I know who pronounces MW (Moo) correctly lol. Great list, and my tastes are very similar, though I'm surprised i didn't see the book of human insects. I recently read Buddha and loved it, though I was really disappointed with the conclusion to a Tatta's character. For me he seemed to completely regress and undo everything that he'd worked for. Also, I really need to read Ayako again, what a fantastic series.

    • @Immortallium
      @Immortallium  3 роки тому +2

      To be fair, it isn't completely clear from the spelling how to pronounce MW. Part of what helped was that the spelling of it in Japanese is Muu in katakana. I remember seeing that you read Buddha recently. Glad you enjoyed it overall even if a character arc was disappointing.

    Last year I decided to start reading Osamu Tezuka, and it was one of my best decisions. Your list is amazing, and it's been helping me a lot to pick my next Tezuka's mangas. I trully love Ayako and also Adolf, and to me, Adolf is my top 1 just because Ayako's ending didn't please me that much, but come on, we're talking about two terrific jobs, Tezuka nails when the subject is Gekiga.

      @@Immortallium SPOILERS from AYAKO BELLOW.
      I guess in the original ending, most of the characters die under the ground (including Ayako's boyfriend). Ayako runs away, and the mother of the family remains as the last Tenge.
      In the second ending (which was the first one to be published), most part of the family survives, Jiro is arrested, Ichiro remains his days in a psychiatric hospital, Ayako's boyfriend will marry her in the future, and Ayako and Naoko stay together with the mom in the last pages, representing the hope for the Tenge family. The family is eventually forgotten in history thhough.
      I tend to think the official ending (the first one) keeps the tragic/unhappy feeling we have along the whole manga, with Ayako rejecting the family and all that, but I do think the second one brings better conclusions for the characters, additional dialogues, and even a great sense of justice for such a bitter story.

    personally I like Dororo a lot, talking about the heavier topics (not surprised with Osamu Tezuka's work I suppose) related to war and power, stuff like that
    and after reading the series it made me appreciate Rurouni Kenshin even more, one of my childhood favourite series and understand the inner workings of the characters and their motivations
    I just finished reading all of Black Jack, it is easy to pick up with only about 19 or so pages self-contained story but this god of story telling still manages to land solid hits that make us question about the ethics as well as the institution of the medical world
    currently on Adolf, quite a lengthy read even for a few chapter so far but I'll hope to take a serious look at it when I am able to
    disclaimer : I am no diehard manga reader but I generally prefer the "old" aesthetics of manga/anime from the 70's to 90"s; and yes Nobuhiro Watsuki committed a nasty crime but I would like to give him a chance for redemption as his art is quite a story about redemption and failing to do that means to dishonour the lessons of that story

    Hi hi Immortalium! From your pov, why do you think so few titles have been translated into English? I saw that Tezuka has so many series translated into French or Italian :(

    • @Immortallium
      @Immortallium  3 роки тому +2

      If I had to guess, it might be because English speaking fans of manga are less interested in older series. France and Italy saw many classic anime series prove to be quite successful in the 70s and 80s and, just as in the English speaking world, manga fandom followed afterwards. English speaking fans were generally exposed to anime later on, excluding those who grew up watching the original Astro Boy and Speed Racer and, from my personal experience, seem somewhat hostile to older manga and anime artwork. Many of the Vertical Osamu Tezuka series did quite well but Vertical pretty much exhausted the series they were interested in. Then the whole debacle with Digital Manga Publishing and Kansai Club Publishing started and they failed to nurture the Tezuka fandom that had developed. I hope that we see more publishers release more Tezuka titles in the future but I think it won't be for a while. Let me know if you or others reading this agree or disagree with my assessment.

      @@Immortallium First, good news is that Kodansha just stated that they'll be releasing a weird title called Bomba.
      It's actually kind of untrue to say that there is little Tezuka manga in English. Reprinting and availability is the greater issue. If you include the handful of titles that DMP did in digital, there are 48 different titles in english totaling about 100 books. Compare to Leiji Matsumoto or Shotaro Ishinomori and its a decent library. But yes, recently, European countries are totally outdoing America in terms of releases.
      Otherwise, you're quite accurate in terms of reasoning. He's "too old" for modern manga fans and "too cutesy" to the alt comics gekiga reading crowd who may not be aware of his OOP mature work.

      @@chris_hawk i just feel there are many tezuka manga is better than dororo. The original manga isnt that big until they have the anime adaptation

      @@chris_hawk phoenix is probably the best manga ever.
      Buddha is basically the karma arc from phoenix which is probably the best arc.
      Barbara is the most creative thing from tezuka and probably one of the greatest. the closest thing to it is probably naoki's Billy bat. if you know about its historical background, you will appreciate it even more.
      Ayako makes guts look like a Disney Princess or MW(another masterpiece in the dark period) are inspire many manga nowadays like monster.
      You can talk like forever about tezuka's manga

      @@dingdongchingchong2957 Dororo seems more inspiring to me than a phoenix or Buddha quite honestly. The other two might be better-known but they don't affect me as deeply as reading Dororo does.
