  • Just how far will mankind chase their obsession for technological progress, before they realize the further we advance technology the closer humanity gets to becoming obsolete - or at least that’s what Rintaro and Katsuhiro Otomo warn us about in their 2001 animated film adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s classic sci-fi manga Metropolis. Check out our blog for even more Metropolis themes, subplots, and random bonus facts!

    This was actually the first anime I watched as a kid I stuck with me for ages an I always tried to find it for a decade not knowing if it was a dream or not about 2 years ago I finally found it super underrated

    This movie is severely underated!

      We had a lot of fun revisiting this film and finding out how the whole project came about, along with all the people involved. There were so many themes and references we didn’t pick up the first time we saw it as kids, so it was nice to see it again with fresh eyes. Plus, and we’ll say it again, the soundtrack is the cherry on top! :D

    Thanks for the review, aprecited. It is quiet an underated anime. I am also a fan of "Fritz Lang" and 30s german expressionist cinema, hence finding this movie quiet amazing as a "trans-modern adaptaion" of the original Lang metropolis.

      It’s so great to hear that a fan of the original Fritz Lang film also enjoyed the anime adaptation. Thank you for the comment :)

      Fritz Lang's German expressionist film Metropolis was released in the 20s, not the 30s.

    Wow this is interesting and beautifully animated. It demonstrates how a long project pays off.

      It all came together so well. I really think the production team did Tezuka’s story justice.

    Great review! I came to the anime version via Fritz Lang's Metropolis, being a fan of that movie and having multiple copies of it. I'm also a fan of anime, so this movie looked to combine both, and it does. The anime is so well done, and so ahead of its time in combining 3D and cel animation, and looks (and sounds) absolutely gorgeous. Thanks so much for this video.

      Thank you! We’re happy you enjoyed the video (๑˃ᴗ˂)ﻭ
      And we appreciate you leaving us a comment, it’s always cool to get the perspective of someone who was a fan of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis before watching the anime!

    before i watched, i thought this was a remake of the 1927 silent film

      Looking at all the comments, you’re not alone my friend lol
      But to be fair, the title and the fact that it is actually, all-be-it very remotely, inspired by the original film by Fritz Lang, makes the confusion understandable.

    I saw a trailer for this on another anime so when it released I bought it from the curiosity that the artists had used computer generated graphics alongside traditional artwork. It turned out to be my favourite anime of all time. I know it's not the best of all time, and my brain tells me Spirited Away is, but it's such a heartwarming story and the kick when Ray Charles' I can't stop loving you begins pulls on my heartstrings in such a way it's almost unbearable to sit through. But you do because it's also so very beautiful.

    Why wasn't Duke Red's nose considered a stereotypical representation of Jews in the US?
    Reading the original story, it seems to me that there is some influence from classic adventure novels where Jews were abused as villains.

    Like another commenter I thought this was just an adaptation until I say your video.
    I interpreted the original film as proposing a Fascist society rather than the communist one it is often said to. It is an autocratic state run by corporations, but bound by the "heart." And the robot leading the uprising was more interested in mindless violence than any political change, playing on the anger of the masses. Class struggle is definitely a theme, but it was for the Nazis as well. Fritz Lang left Germany because of the Nazis, but it was mostly because he hated Goebbels (who was a big fan of Metropolis) and they tried to control his work.

    • @tehf00n
      @tehf00n Рік тому +1

      You can interpret this movie a lot of ways. It has communist, capitalist, empirical, dictatorship based themes which are all rendered moot by the encapsulating love story that is the real message of the movie.

    I decided to watch this movie off of randomly Googling anime movies to see about 2 - 3 years ago... off of seeing a short brand new anime movie released on Netflix. I was surprised at how beautiful its animation looked. As of now I can't recall the name of the movie, but I'd be happy to go and search for it if any reply asking.
    Anyways, this movie was many to pop up in relation to anime movies through a quick Google search, and I seemed was honestly eager to view it due to its cool-looking movie poster.
    New Year's of the year, I decided to stay up late at night and watch it in my room with headphones to "set the mood". I seen about 30 minutes of it, then fell asleep.
    I soon woke up at around the 55 minute mark of the movie and watched till the end. I teared up at the end.
    Some good time later I decided to rewatch the movie and I don't regret it one bit. It's not as great as Akira, but still beautiful and emotional on as how they draw Tima and Kenichi together. I'll never forgive this beautiful movie for pulling on my heart's strings.

    I love how bad the CG was on the fish in the office LOL
    But jokes aside it is a visual spectacle.

    • @lazylion.productions
      @lazylion.productions  6 місяців тому

      Haha - That’s WILD! I specifically remember being so impressed by that huge fish swimming across the office window XD
      I also thought that the fact that the DVD case came with a little mini DVD disc instead of a regular-sized one was beyond cool.

    I remember first time watching it back in 2007, I was un Grade 1. I thought I was watching Astro Boy on AXN but ended up being traumatized by that ending 😭

    • @lazylion.productions
      @lazylion.productions  6 місяців тому +1

      Ya, as a First Grader, that ending would definitely be quite a shock lol It’s a beautiful movie, but if the visuals of Tima going rogue don’t traumatize you, then the bittersweet ending probably will.

    I just wanted to hear some thoughtful insight on one of my favorite anime’s from my childhood. And instead I got two videos in a row with a very clear and specific political bend to them.

    Watch the *real* 1929 Metropolis, then you will see that the "godfather of anime" was really ripping off an actual original masterpiece, which in of itself is a ripoff of The Revelation. This isn't new, this story is as old as existence.

    • @tehf00n
      @tehf00n Рік тому +4

      They weren't ripping it off as it's impossible to do so. The original is so complex and interpretive that it cannot be matched without being a direct remake. This is more of a homage so the underlying themes of anti-communist, anti-capitalist, anti-dictatorship, can just be a means to an end to complete the love story it actually is.
